Kamtronics now open in Kamsack offering electronics and more Recently a new electronics business opened its door in Kamsack in what was once the Saskatchewan Liquor Board Store on Nykolaishen Drive.

“We saw a need in the community for a bricks and mortar facility that would provide cellular phone services,” said Chris Nykolaishen, an owner. “We used to own the SaskTel store in Kamsack, but since it was pulled from the community there was an existing gap.”

Nykolaishen Holdings and Raymond Reibin formed a partnership and opened Kamtronics, holding a grand opening celebration on October 24.

The business has three fulltime employees, and is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The store is a Source dealer, known as an “Express Store” and is able to bring in any products a corporate store can carry.

“Another good feature is that clients may order any Source product online and have it shipped to the store in Kamsack for pickup,” said Nykolaishen.

Eastern Star Halloween Coffee Party well attended The Hiawatha Chapter of the Eastern Star of Kamsack got into the spirit of Halloween when it hosted a Halloween Coffee Party at the Masonic Hall on October 30.

A steady stream of attendees had the chance to relax and enjoy coffee and dainties in the Hall which had been decorated with colourful Halloweenthemed articles. Members of the Eastern Star wore Halloween costumes as they served goodies and refreshments to those in

attendance.

The group had been collecting donations to be given to Ronald McDonald House in Saskatoon, as part of a special project initiated by the Saskatchewan Grand Chapter of the Eastern Star. A collection box had been set up at the Affinity Credit Union, Kamsack Branch.

“We are most grateful for the support we have received from the community for this initiative,” said Susan Bear, Worthy Matron.

LOOKING BACK...

A Decade Ago

Broda of Kamsack, an entrepreneur and businessman who created the Broda Group in 1957 beginning with just one gravel truck, described as someone “who has the spirit of a true Saskatchewan pioneer,” was presented with the Saskatchewan Order of Merit at a reception held in Saskatoon. ***** Involved in the cook-and-book after-school program at the Victoria School, Elizabeth Ashley and Maggie Thomas helped make meatballs before reading the book Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. ***** On behalf of The Health Foundation Ross Fisher (executive director) and Christopher Bohun (stroke services manager for Sunrise Health Region) announced that its fundraising campaign for the Stroke Prevention and Recovery Initiative had raised sufficient funds to buy and install the upgrade to the CT Scan and the brain perfusion software/hardware needed to analyze the effects of a stroke on a person’s brain. ***** The Pelly and District Recreation Board made possible an all expense-paid trip for 37 youths and seven adult chaperones to take in a Saskatchewan Roughrider football game in Regina. ***** A grand opening ceremony was held at the Norquay School to mark the opening of the school’s new addition, with opening remarks given by Trevor Olson, principal.

Moe and Saskatchewan Party best when leading with optimism The Saskatchewan Legislature is sitting again and one wouldn’t necessarily think the politicians returning to the place where they’re the most political would be welcomed.

But after a federal election that produced maddening results for Westerners and a whole lot of uncertainty about what lies ahead, it turns out that an upbeat Speech from the Throne is exactly what we needed.

The Saskatchewan Party government’s new plan contained a call for 200,000 more people and 100,000 more jobs by 2030; aggressive goals that will be tough to attain.

It took Saskatchewan 19 years, from 2000 until now, to create the last 100,000 jobs added to our workforce.

That period included the boom between 2007 and 2011, which is rather telling. While there are always years when we add 10,000 plus jobs to the work force, there are also bust years when we lose jobs. It’s always two steps forward, one step back.

S i m i l a r l y, a d d i n g a n o t h e r 2 2 5 , 5 3 8 p e o p l e t o Saskatchewan to reach 1.4 million (the total now is at 1,174,462) by 2030 will be exceedingly tough.

Yes, the province did meet the Sask. Party’s initial 2007 goal of growing the province by 100,000 people in its first decade in office. In fact, it met that target in less than half time.

However, that was during the record resource boom from 2007 to 2011. It seems unlikely to experience that kind of boom again any time soon.

But the issue isn’t meeting ambitious goals: it’s having

the courage to make them in the first place. That’s something not all governments are willing to do.

Moreover, the intangible side effect of all this is it affords the province a little optimism and faith in in itself.

And having a little optimism seems to be exactly what we could all use after a miserable election campaign that has resulted in a minority Liberal government that’s now frustrating so many.

That minority government has no Liberal representation in Alberta or Saskatchewan to serve at the cabinet table, but Premier Scott Moe has pointed out the problem is bigger than that.

It isn’t so much who is in the next Liberal minority government cabinet, but “what that cabinet actually does,” Moe said.

There is legitimacy to Moe’s frustrations about pipelines and the carbon tax and added fear that a Justin Trudeau minority federal government will not address them.

However, maybe it’s here that Moe needs to pump the brakes a little, or at least draw on the same hope and optimism his government demonstrated in its Throne Speech.

So frustrated are people out here with the federal election results that it’s given rise to talk of Saskatchewan and/ or Alberta becoming independent, or perhaps joining the United States.

There was a meeting in Lloydminster to explore ways to “deal with the situation Western Canada finds itself in after the election results.”

Obviously, Moe is not lending his support to the #Wexit movement that’s had 200,000 hits on its Facebook page.

He said his position is that “Saskatchewan should be in a strong and united Canada.”

However, Moe has also stopped short of outright condemning Western separation. Instead, he is using the threat posed by this anger and this movement as grounds for a “new deal” within the confederation.

The Saskatchewan Premier needs to be careful here. He needs to understand how this can add fuel to the prairie fire.

Moe is right to point out the frustrations and the need for Trudeau to address them.

But a far more effective way to accomplish this is a clear message that this can be best accomplished in a stable Canadian federation.

Moe and others need to draw on the optimism in their own Throne Speech.

Western Canadian Wheat Growers message inconsistent As usual, comments from the Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association (WCWGA) were all over the map recently.

S t e p h e n Va n d e r v a l k , WCWGA vice-president, attacked the government for providing compensation to dairy farmers for damages to their marketing board inflicted by Ottawa. Meanwhile, Jeff Nielsen, former WCWGA

executive, was asking for the government to be a willing partner to grain farmers. So their message is, “government bad, except when it is good for just us.”

Do they not see the contradiction?

The only expertise the WCWGA has to offer about supply management is they don’t like it. Why are they targeting one farm group versus others? Dairy guys

probably grow wheat too!

T h e W C W G A’s m a i n purpose was to kill the Crow Rate and the C an ad ian Wh eat B o ar d (CWB). Those have been accomplished and their friends in the big grain c o m p a n i e s h a v e d e c i ded that prairie farmers will only get $5.30/bu for #1CWRS with 13.5 per cent protein for export and feed wheat brings $5.50 per bushel domestically. The

WCWGA should be happy!

Many farmers are still trying to get the federal government to fairly distribute farmers’ money taken when the CWB was transferred to the Government of Saudi Arabia and Bunge. That case is working its way through the courts. The WCWGA certainly never supported this action.

Farmers are losing billions of dollars to the middlemen

in the grain trade since the loss of the CWB and the WCWGA is as quiet as a church mouse! With a basis on wheat contracts of as much as $45, where is the price transparency?

It’s also ironic when the federal government gives money to the Canola Council of Canada, which royally offended the Chinese on dockage over three years ago and lost that customer, there was

never any outcry from the WCWGA. They even shamelessly took “contracts” from the Harper government to push their agenda and fund their socalled association.

The WCWGA message is inconsistent because it is not a farmer message but rather a message the prairie grain trade puts out through their mouths!

Throne speech offers little in the way of new ideas Sometimes, probably without consciously trying to do it, politicians can end up parroting the rather obvious.

Such was the case when the Saskatchewan government delivered its latest Throne Speech.

Not surprisingly the Speech, delivered by Lt.-Gov. Russ Mirasty, talks a lot about building toward the future.

It goes down the path of building for two rather obvious reasons.

The first being that we are only two months away from the start of a new decade and that is always a rather fitting time to establish some benchmarks and goals for the years ahead.

The reality of politics is, of course, with a provincial election set for 2020 this is this edition of the government’s last Throne Speech before going to the polls, and so using the Speech to begin laying out its platform for re-election only makes sense.

The Speech naturally suggests the 2020s will be a decade of growth for the province.

Again not a startling position since no government is going to suggest decline is coming when they are in charge.

And, in the case of population the recent trend has been one of growth, and it is hoped that continues.

Right now that might be questioned by some as job layoff notices across a range of industries; potash, electricians and others are all too common. However, a plan for growth over a decade is one that has to look beyond the periodic ups and downs of an economy. For example, the potash sector has faced layoffs in the past, and then rebounded as the demand for the commodity bounces back.

So the government, through the Speech, is promising to unveil a plan for Saskatchewan to achieve a population of 1.4 million and 100,000 more jobs by 2030. There is no doubt the suggested growth itself will create economic activity, the new residents requiring homes, clothing, food, and cars, so if

achieved it is a definite positive.

The Speech also talks in the broadest terms about growth in agriculture.

“Increasing crop production and growing the percentage of primary agricultural production that is processed in our province will be part of our plan moving forward,” said the Speech. “Growth in the value of exports requires more valueadded production. To ensure our province reaps the full benefit of our agricultural resources, my government will outline measures to increase agricultural value-added exports to $10 billion by 2030.”

Realistically there has never been a time when the farm sector has not looked to grow production. That is the essence of a business plan for most producers, grow more bushels on the same number of acres to improve the bottom line.

Value-added is a different thing. The idea of increasing that side of agriculture expends back decades now and the countryside is littered with failed hog barns, flax straw processors, dead alfalfa dehydrators, failed pea chip plants and more. That side of the government’s plan will be far more interesting to view, but the core idea of value-added is far from new.

Suspect detained after police pursuit through multiple RCMP detachment areas Numerous charges have been laid as a result of a series of criminal offences that took place in the Wadena/Foam Lake, Yo r k t o n , M e l v i l l e a n d Fort Qu’Appelle detachment areas involving a vehicle stolen from Canora.

Tyler Calvin Severight, 26 years old, of the Cote First Nation, was arrested in Fort Qu’Appelle after a series of police pursuits, according to an RCMP release.

Beginning in the late evening on November 2, Wadena/Foam Lake RCMP were dispatched to a motor vehicle collision in Foam

Lake in which one driver fled the scene of the accident. The other driver was able to provide a description to police, said the release.

Police later located the vehicle unoccupied and confirmed it was stolen from Canora.

An officer then located a male matching the description walking nearby the abandoned stolen vehicle.

The suspect disobeyed orders by the officer to stop walking and pulled out a machete from his pants. The suspect pointed the machete at the officer, then held the machete to his own throat

telling the officer to “leave me alone.” The suspect then fled the area on foot. A short time later a truck was reported stolen by an armed suspect with a machete in which he entered a residence through an unlocked door. The suspect was last seen on highway 16 heading towards Yorkton.

Yorkton RCMP located the truck on Hwy No. 16 near Springside and attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused to stop. Police pursued the vehicle and one officer was nearly struck by the suspect as it swerved into the

oncoming lane. Two spike belt attempts were foiled when the suspect drove into the ditch.

The suspect entered Yorkton city limits and the pursuit was discontinued for public safety. Police located the suspect fueling up at a gas station a short time later.

Officers attempted to block the suspect at the pumps, but the vehicle fled towards Melville on highway 10 with the fuel pump still in the vehicle.

Melville RCMP followed the suspect from a distance on Hwy No. 10 while Fort Qu’Appelle RCMP set up a

road block east of Balcarres.

Another spike belt was used and was effective causing the suspect’s tires to deflate. The suspect continued to flee towards Fort Qu’Appelle. As the vehicle entered Fort Qu’Appelle, the vehicle came to a stop after colliding with a stop sign.

The suspect fled on foot to a nearby backyard where he was surrounded by police. The suspect continued to hold the machete to his t h r o a t . Tw o c o n d u c t e d energy deployments were unsuccessful. An officer trained in crisis negotiation

made contact with the suspect, but after 70 minutes the suspect would not give up.

Officers used an extended range impact weapon that shoots a foam projectile to disable the suspect. He was arrested shortly thereafter, assessed by EMS and taken into custody. No injuries were sustained to the suspect or police.

Ty l e r S e v e r i g h t w a s remanded and appeared in Fort Qu’Appelle Provincial Court on November 4 and 7 charged with numerous offences, and was to remain in custody.

Playhouse audience have “minds blown” at Chris Funk concert

By Jan Derwores A show billed as a “dynamic and mind-blowing magic show that has entertained and amazed audiences across the globe” did not disappoint on Saturday night.

The charismatic entertainer known as Chris Funk the Wonderist put on an exceptional performance for a family-friendly audience at the Kamsack Playhouse on November 2.

“Good evening Kamsack, I’m Chris Funk the Wonderist,” he said.

“Wonderist is not a word you will find in the dictionary. I made it up because I am redefining wonder!”

The fast-paced, highly audience interactive show began with Funk passing “the tube of wonder” to audience member Dave Clark for safekeeping, instructing him to keep his eyes on it at all times. The significance of the tube was revealed at the end of the show, when Funk exposed the contents to the amazed and delighted audience of around 60 persons

in attendance. Definitely, “mind-blown.”

Funk admits to performing his first magic trick at the age of 16 and from then on he was completely hooked. He chose to follow the path as a magician rather than pursuing a career in music.

He kept his audience entertained with his amazing talent, performing illusion after illusion which left the appreciative audience saying “Wow!” over and over.

Whether he was regurgitating a playing card or cutting open a juicy ripe tomatoe to discover a twenty dollar bill inside, he kept his audience’s attention with his witty commentary and amazing talent.

The act contained a wide range of masterfully presented illusions that had the audience wanting more.

After the show, many in attendance gathered to get autographs and have their photo taken with the performer.

“I’m so glad we came!” remarked Michelle Guillet.

Wendy Shabatoski went on stage to assist Chris Funk with a magic trick involving “arts and crafts.”

“This was just the most amazing time ever,” said Kassie, who came with her two children. “My mom gave me the tickets for my birthday present and we had so much fun!”

“We all really enjoyed it!” said Shanley Allard who attended with her daughters Shayla and Kaley and her father-in-law, Noel Allard.

Funk’s wife, Charity, travels with him as his assistant.

They couple are formerly of Winnipeg, and are now based out of Chilliwack, B.C. The previous evening, Funk had performed for an audience of around 130 in Wynyard, as part of his Saskatchewan tour.

“I love this Playhouse venue,” Funk remarked backstage before his performance.

“It’s always exciting to discover such an amazing building in which to perform.”

There are illusionists and there are magicians but Chris Funk the Wonderist is in a class all of his own. To have a performer of his calibre entertain at the Playhouse was an accomplishment for the Kamsack Arts Council.

The Kamsack Arts Council has done an excellent job of entertaining at the Playhouse for the live performances.

We were also pleased to present the show on a Saturday night, an evening where hopefully more people could attend.

“Although we did not have as many in attendance as we had hoped for, we were very excited to present talent of the calibre of Chris Funk,” he concluded.

Funk definitely impressed and brought the “wonder” in “Wonderist” to the Kamsack stage.

The sheer “wow factor” of the performance left the audience wanting more, and his performance left a lasting

impression.

The next performance in the series at the Playhouse will be a new take on the classic travelling troubadour with a performance by Don Amero on February 21. The show falls somewhere between a family friendly stand up comedy show and an intimate concert.

On April 22 the Kamsack Arts Council presents the Fitzgeralds, a family group consisting of three-time Canadian Grandmaster Fiddle and Step Dance Champions, in a show that will resonate with audiences of all ages.

Kamsack air cadets honored during trip to France to observe 75th anniversary of D-Day Eleven Kamsack air cadets with their three adult supervisors returned to Canada on June 8 after a nine day trip to Europe to help observe the 75th anniversary of D-Day. The cadets first flew to London, England where they toured for three days before taking the ferry to France where they participated in services at Juno Beach on June 6 and then flew home from Paris.

“But the most humbling experience was on June 6 when our squadron was a part of 359 cadets and French school children who paraded across Juno Beach and up the hill to the ceremony,” said Karen Bodnaryk, squadron civilian instructor (CI). “Five of our cadets carried boots to place on the stage to symbolize the soldiers who had perished on the beach, All our cadets placed red and white carnations on a fence to represent the soldiers we lost that day.”

We arrived at the ferry at 6 a.m. and at 8;15 a.m. the ferry left Portsmouth and arrived in Caen at 3 p.m.

We were picked up by another bus and taken to Juno Beach Centre. We were able to visit the bunkers, the Juno Beach Centre and the beach and area where 75 years ago the Canadian soldiers came ashore.

On the way to the hotel the bus stopped at Bény-surMer Canadian war cemetery.

This cemetery has 2,044 Canadians buried in it from the Battle of Normandy.

The cemetery is beautifully landscaped.

The bus then took us to us to our hotel. Supper was served and then it was bedtime as it had been a very long day.

June 5 Keanna Romaniuk and Aidan Broda Bagnoles de l’Orne is a small town by our hotel. We took a long walk through the town and the scenery was magnificent. Lots of centuryold buildings and lots of greenspace.

The bus picked us up and took us to Courseulles-surMer for lunch. Some of the cadets tried the local cuisine but most stuck to burgers.

After many a run-through we were back on the bus heading back to our hotel. On the way we stopped at a grocery store to pick up snacks for the next day. It was going to be a long hot day and we needed to be prepared. Back at the hotel we had supper and then it was time to get our uniforms in tiptop shape for the ceremony on June 6th.

June 6…D-Day Teanna Raffard and Gerri Basaraba After a 4 a.m. wake-up and 5 a.m. breakfast we got on the bus to Juno Beach.

The bus was full of excited cadets. The French police escorted the buses to Juno Beach; there was very tight security. We had to get there early because of the tight security, so we were able to relax and eat some of the snacks we had purchased for the day that lay ahead.

Our cadets and the cadets from Vancouver were leading the procession of all the French school children, representing the 359 soldiers Canada lost that day.

We were lined up on the beach with a cadet and 12 or 13 French students and then another cadet and more students.

Five of our cadets got to carry a pair of boots and place them on the stage. All of the students and cadets carried either a red or white carnation and placed it on a fence

Once the parade was over we heard speeches from the French President and Prime Minister Trudeau. There were also more speeches from other dignitaries.

Once it was all finished we walked to a nearby town where they had set up supper in a skating arena.

Back on the bus and back to the hotel. Because it was a very long day and we had had an early supper, one of our officers, Capt. Terry Eritz, finished our day off by buying us pizza.

June 7 Mary-Jo Keewatin-Marion Today was one of our last days on our Europe trip.

Yesterday was the 75th anniversary for D-Day. Everyone was tired and out of energy after the ceremony.

The night before, we had to be packed and ready for

the next day. Today we were going on a three-hour bus ride to Paris.

We visited, shopped and had fun. The first stop was the Arc de Triomphe, then on to the Louvre Museum. Last but not least, we finally got to see the Eiffel Tower. That was my favorite part. I have always dreamed of seeing it in person. I can definitely tell you it was bigger than I ever imagined.

Later, when we were done taking pictures, we headed to a restaurant to eat supper. After that, we took the subway back halfway to our hotel for the night and walked the rest of the way back.

Tonight was the last night we would get to say goodbye to our new friends from Vancouver as their flight left at 4:30 a.m.

But it was a trip that will be etched in the cadets’ memory banks forever.

We had a great tour director who made us laugh and kept everything running smoothly. He had many challenges because of the extra security but he always managed to find a way.

We had a British local tour guide who dressed the part and who had a great sense of British humour.

Our squadron is so fortunate to have the community support we have.

This trip was filled with long days, early mornings and short nights. We learnt that people in England and France appreciate Canadians. Both countries

Sacrifice and Legacy: Two amputees share a special bond Sean Borle, 24, recalls meeting Second World War veteran Lloyd Brown, 96, for the first time six years ago at a Remembrance Day ceremony. “We had this magical moment where I reached out my right hand and he put out his left, to shake hands,” he says.

Borle was born missing his left hand, and Brown lost his right arm on October 18, 1944 while serving with the Loyal Edmonton Regiment in Italy. “I was staked at a farmhouse which had a children’s treehouse located behind it,” says Brown. “In the treehouse was a sniper who kept shooting at our boys. A tank then came which shot out shells, the shrapnel hitting my right arm.”

The ability to find the positive in a dark situation is one reason why Borle admires Brown. On Remembrance Day, the pair share a special tradition of laying a wreath on behalf of The War Amps, an organization entering its second century of service this year.

The War Amps was started by war amputee veterans returning from the First World War to help each other adapt to their new reality as amputees. They then welcomed amputee veterans following the Second World War, sharing all that they had learned.

Borle grew up in The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program, which provides financial assistance for the cost of artificial

limbs, emotional support and regional seminars to young amputees across Canada. It was started by War Amps Members, like Brown, who realized their experiences of living with amputation could help others.

Through what they call “Operation Legacy,” Borle and his fellow members of CHAMP have now “taken up the torch” of remembrance to pay tribute to the veteran members of The War Amps, whose efforts have made a difference in the lives of thousands of amputees.

“I can’t overstate the impact that these programs have on young amputees and their futures,” said Borle. “Knowing that there are people like Lloyd who

understand what it’s like to be missing a limb, makes you feel like you’re not alone.”

When Brown attends the Remembrance Day ceremonies, he reflects on all those in his regiment who never came home. “It’s heartbreaking to think of all those who lost their lives and it’s important to remember them,” he says.

For Borle, it’s special to share Remembrance Day with Brown. “I would not be the person I am today had it not been for that decision more than 100 years ago to begin The War Amps,” says Borle. “It is our commitment as Champs that the legacy and sacrifices of Lloyd, and all the war amputee veterans, will be remembered and carried forward.”

Kamsack Doukhobor turns against his faith and enlists This article appeared in the November 10, 2005 issue of the Kamsack Times So troubled was a Kamsack man by the threat of Adolf Hitler that he went against his faith and community and enlisted as a soldier in the Second World War. Born and raised a D o u k h o b o r, in w h at h e calls a strictly pacifist family, Walter Rezansoff of Kamsack was behind the wheel of a truck that landed on the beach in Normandy on D-Day. For the next 11 months, Rezansoff, as a soldier with the 27th Canadian Armoured Regiment, known as the Sherbrooke Fusiliers, drove a truck that was loaded with supplies for the tanks fighting at the front, which was just ahead of him.

“I didn’t fire a shot during the war, but was under fire for 11 months doing my job,” Rezansoff said. “The tanks did the work.”

It was a hard decision to make, Rezansoff said during an interview at his West Avenue home in Kamsack.

“But, Hitler started taking over one country, then the next.

“I had family in the former Soviet Union, and I felt I had to join (the war effort).”

Born and raised on a farm 10 miles south of Kamsack, a son of Nicholai and Maria Rezansoff, Walter attended McGillvrey School. He was 25 in 1942 when he made the decision to take up arms.

“One day I came home and told Dad I had decided to join,” he said. “Dad didn’t say anything. But I saw the shocked look on his face.

“My mind was made up.

I said my good-byes and went.”

Accompanied by two friends, Rezansoff enlisted.

But the medical examination resulted in both of his friends not being accepted.

He was.

According to Koozma Tarasoff of Ottawa, a wellknown Doukhobor historian and author, about one per cent of the eligible adult Doukhobors joined the Canadian forces during the Second World War.

Doukhobors’ abhorrence of institutionalized killing was highlighted in the Burning of Arms event in Tsarist Russia in 1895, when about 7,000 Spirit Wrestlers (a.k.a. Doukhobors) made a public statement to the world to get rid of military arms once and for all, Tarasoff said.

Conscientious objection to supporting militarism and war is a legitimate mechanism of protest in a

democracy, Tarasoff said.

In Saskatchewan, those Doukhobors residing on farms who received calls for military service in the Second World War were given official permission to remain on the farm and to send funds to the Red Cross in lieu of service.

This permission was granted because farm labour was needed at that time, he said. However, other Doukhobors were arrested

In Saskatchewan in 1941, more than 70 Doukhobor men served four months of alternative service, building

the Lac la Ronge highway north of Prince Albert in lieu of enlisting in the army, he said. At the same time, 92 chose jail in Prince Albert for six months instead of military service.

After two to three months of training in Regina, Rezansoff was transferred to Chatham, Ont., for several more months of basic training. He was then sent to Camp Borden for advanced training.

While in Camp Borden, Rezansoff was attached to the 27th Canadian Armoured Regiment.

“Being from the farm, I knew about trucks, motors and driving,’ Rezansoff said.

“That was an important skill in a mechanized army.

“I was assigned to drive a truck.”

Originating in Sherbrooke, Que., in 1866 as an infantry unit, the regiment, known as the Sherbrooke Fusiliers, was converted to armour, which became part of the Second Canadian Armoured Brigade.

Strenuous training prepared soldiers for war Continued from Page 11 Rezansoff and his regiment were sent to Nova Scotia, where they waited for the Queen Elizabeth II, the luxury passenger ship that had been transformed into the world’s largest troop carrier.

He was one of about 18,000 soldiers that boarded the Queen Elizabeth in Halifax for the 15-day, enemy-eluding, zig-zagging journey across the Atlantic Ocean to Scotland.

“It was a hell of a big thing for me to see land after being on the ocean for so long,” Rezansoff said. “I was beginning to wonder if I’d ever step foot on dry ground again.”

The Sherbrooke Fusiliers underwent strenuous training in the British Isles in preparation for the day when they would be put to the test against the enemy.

On June 6, 1944, Rezansoff and the Fusiliers were part of the D-Day invasion of Allied forces in Europe.

As the second Canadian Armoured Brigade’s reserve

regiment, the Fusiliers landed at Bernieres-sur-Mer. During the breakout from the beachhead on the following day, they fought at Authie and Buron.

“I drove my truck off our landing craft into four feet of water,” he said. “I just hoped the truck would keep going and did not get water in the carburetor or spark plugs.

“I took a deep breath when I was finally on dry soil.

“I remember we spent the night on the beach, then kept moving on.

“From then on, I stayed in action and supplied the tanks with ammunition, until the last shot was fired in May, 1945.

“Many of my best friends were lost in action.”

Rezansoff has memories of being shot at and his vehicle averting bombs.

“We slept wherever we were,” he said. “The cooks set up their equipment. I remember they would use a blow-torch to cook the food that had been placed in metal plates. “ We ’ d m o v e o n , o r

sometimes stay at a place for a week, sleeping under the truck. We’d advance when the front cleared.

“We were always only a few miles behind the tanks, supplying them with their ammunition and fuel.

“Trying to go to sleep at night, I would think that maybe, because of aircraft and artillery shelling, that night would be my last.

“At every stop, we’d dig a slip trench. We felt much safer once we were below the surface and hidden from shrapnel.

“After a few weeks of being under constant shelling or bombing, I finally made up my mind.

“I realized that if I didn’t sleep, I would be dead.

I went under the truck, wrapped myself in three blankets, and slept like a log.

“The next morning, someone said, it was “hot” last night, meaning we had been under intensive firing. I hadn’t heard a thing.

“I remember many of our first casualties were officers in tanks who had opened the hatches to see what was

By July, the Fusiliers were involved in the actions around Caen, including participation in the vicious fighting on Bourguebus Ridge, and were instrumental

Following the Normandy campaign, the Fusiliers fought in Belgium, Holland and Germany.

and played an effective part in the slaughter of the German Seventh Army.

Except for an occasional day’s rest, they were never out of action since the invasion began.

Rezansoff saw first-hand the horrors of war Continued from Page 12 The regiment triumphed over the best of Hitler ’s panzer division. Their record of attack is believed to have been higher than that of any other armoured regiment serving in France.

Talking about the war, seated at his kitchen table in Kamsack, Rezansoff had a map of northern Europe in front of him, with the route clearly marked that he and the Fusiliers had taken from Normandy to Germany.

Recalling the end of the war, Rezansoff said that in the beginning it was a creepy feeling. For awhile he had a hard time to adjust to the silence of no more fighting.

Returning to the farm, Rezansoff said his family had been very glad to see him.

“They didn’t expect to see me again.”

He said he had found it strange upon his return that the family dog, which he had never met, came bounding up to him and greeted him as if it somehow knew that he was part of the family.

Discussing the 11 months he spent driving a truck with supplies for tanks at the front line during the Second World War, Walter Rezansoff of Kamsack was reminded of the route his brigade took by referring to a map of northern Europe, with the route clearly marked.

“While I was being discharged in Regina, I thought I’d take training to be an electrician, a plumber or

something in the building trades, but the advisor said I’d be better off farming.

“I got a loan for a tractor

and I stayed on the farm.”

On December 1, 1956, he married Nellie Voykin.

The couple has one daughter, Kathleen, who teaches school in Saskatoon.

“I remember thinking that when the war was over, I did not wish to see another war.

“Killing people is useless.

I’m a pacifist. Wars are out of date.

“Previously in war, soldiers died, now enemies fire at cities where innocents get killed.

“You returned home safely because of God’s help,” his wife said.

“I did my best,” Rezansoff said.

Asked what he thinks about each November 11, when Remembrance Day is observed, Rezansoff said he misses his friends who had lost their lives.

“During war, you get very close to other people,” he said.

Poet writes tribute poem in memory of HMCS Kamsack Garth Ukrainetz is a poet who does his research.

While researching the warships known as “Flower Corvettes” of the Royal Canadian Navy, he came across a diary written by Frank Curry who was a sonar operator on HMCS Kamsack, searching for submarines as they escorted merchant ships across the Atlantic. A hundred men were crowded into facilities meant for 50. It was a damp, dismal existence.

“I was so intrigued by the words Frank wrote in his war diary that I was inspired to write a poem about the HMCS Kamsack,” Ukrainetz said. “Even though the ship itself did not have a colourful war history, Frank’s diary really touched me.”

The first two paragraphs of the poem are an encapsulation of Curry’s thoughts from his diary, which sets the tone for the remainder of the poem.

Doing more research, Ukrainetz discovered that the Town of Kamsack had

signalled the end of the Second World War. “At the height of the war, the Town of Kamsack was dealt a devastating blow when a cyclone destroyed 400 homes and 100 businesses.” Ukrainetz said.

“It is almost a complete miracle that only three lives were lost in the midst of such devastation. There must have been a ‘hand of protection’ over the town’s peoples lives that day.

“The tornado’s destruction w as s o s ig n if ican t that an article about the Kamsack cyclone appeared in the August 11, 1944 issue of the New York Times.” he added.

“The sheer coincidence that the HMCS Kamsack was fighting a war at sea, and yet the Town of Kamsack was the one involved in a dramatic event of destruction, cemented my desire to write a tribute poem.

“The poem contains the use of prayer, specifically the ‘spiritual warfare’ aspect of prayer. It is evident the Kamsack area has a deep spiritual significance to it with local names like Good Spirit Lake and Good Spirit School Division. The name ‘Kamsack’ itself implies a reverence and awe of things ‘vast and wide’.

First Nation communities in the area have a heightened spiritual connection to the land and the Doukhobors who arrived in Canada from Eastern Europe were drawn to this region and must have felt a spiritual connection with the area as well, for they were a very spiritual group of people.” Ukrainetz expounded.

“One of the main themes of the poem is to ‘keep your faith’ no matter how dark and miserable life seems at the moment, for even in our darkest

OBITUARIES

BROWN: On Wednesday, October 23, 2019, Tom Brown passed away peacefully at the age of 91 at the Norquay health centre. A memorial service was held on Wednesday, October 30, 2019 from the Pelly Community Centre. Interment followed at the Maloneck Cemetery. Tom was born on October 25, 1927 on the family farm near Alida, SK to Mabel and Gordon Brown.

In August of 1934 at the age of seven, Tom along with his mom, dad, six brothers and two sisters relocated to Pelly, SK. They brought a herd of cattle, some chickens, a team of horses, a caboose and some family possessions. Tom started school in Alida, SK and then continued in Sunny-Isle school north of Pelly, SK. He finished his education in Pelly, SK. He was dedicated to many things but something he was most proud of was being an instructor for the 4H club. During his almost 50 years of service he received the “Garden of Saskatchewan” 1991 citizens award. On October 23, 1959 he married Edna Schell at Maloneck Church. They then started farming in the Maloneck area. Tom was a dedicated farmer until January 1991 when he suffered a debilitating stroke. After only a few months of rehabilitation he came back to the town of Pelly where he lived with his sister Cora Stobee for more than 20 years. Tom went to live with Emily Schweigert and Zoey in Norquay, SK, where he received family-like care! Finally he spent the last five years at the Norquay Nursing Home, where he reunited with many friends and neighbours. Tom is survived by his son Faron (Sharlene), sister Cora Stobee and brothers Joe and Roy (Toni), as well as many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbours. Tom is predeceased by his wife Edna; son Grant; parents Mabel and Gordon Brown; sisters Mary (Allan) Doughty, Doreen (Bill) Cooke; sister-in-law Mary Brown; brothers Leonard (Sheila), Arthur (Emily), Garnet, Cecil, Allan and Walter. If friends so desire donations in Tom’s memory may be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the Children’s Telemiracle Saskatchewan. Arrangements have been entrusted to Andrychuk Funeral Home.

ROSE, Donald Robert born March 4, 1942 - October 27, 2019 aged 77 years. Donald Robert Rose, age 77, passed away Sunday, October 27, 2019, at Yorkton Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Don was born March 4, 1942 in the Pelly District to Robert and Elizabeth (Sterzer) Rose. On November 18, 1961 he married Helen Swerhun and they moved to Kamsack while Don worked construction and they raised three children.

Don worked most of his career in road construction, with Broda Construction finishing his career working with Kam-Crete. Don was a faithful church goer, helping in any way he could. Don’s passions, besides his family, included hunting, snowmobiling, fishing, camping, and anything outdoors. He loved working in his yard gardening and trying to grow different trees and plants. He had a love for dogs, horses and playing cards. Don was a volunteer fireman for many years.

As busy as his working life was, he always took time for his family. They did a lot of travelling in Canada and throughout the States. Left to love him forever is his wife Helen of 58 years; sons Leonard, Dale (Christine), and daughter Margaret; seven grandchildren Candise (Chad), Cassandra, Eddie, Shyanne (Logan), Shiloe, Jasmine, Wyatt; great-grandchildren Owen and Emma; sisters Marjorie (Ernie) Adams, Joyce Green; brother Albert (Jean) Rose; sister-in-law Verna Rose; brother- in- law Ed Hay, as well as numerous extended family members. Don was predeceased by his parents, brother Clarence, sister Shirley Hay, and granddaughter Megan White. Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, November 1, 2019 from St. Stephen’s Roman Catholic Church, Kamsack, SK, with interment at Riverview Cemetery, Kamsack, SK. PRAYER CORNER KLUTZ, Natalie - Natalie Klutz passed away peacefully at the Canora Gateway Lodge on October 28, 2019, at the age of 85 years. Natalie was born on January 2, 1934, on the family farm near Mikado, SK, to Michael and Victoria (Kozoswyst) Hladyboroda. She attended Bogucz School and remained on the farm until she married Mike Klutz in August 1954. Together, Natalie and Mike raised six children on the Klutz farm. Grain, animals, and a large garden took up most of the time they had, but there was time for a bit of curling and whatever was needed at the Mikado Hall. In 1991, Natalie and Mike moved into Canora, SK. They looked forward to looking after grandchildren, volunteer work, church choir and while doing all this, they still managed to care for two gardens. In 2000, Mike passed away.

Natalie remained in their house until May 2018, when she became a resident of the Eaglestone Lodge in Kamsack, SK. In June 2019, with Natalie’s failing health, she spent the next few months being cared for at the Canora Hospital and then the Gateway Lodge. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Natalie was predeceased by her parents, Michael and Victoria; husband, Mike; brothers: Bohdan, William, and Peter; her sister, Verna; and her brothers-in-law: Edwin Blum, Peter Marcinkiw, and Morley Wagner. She is survived by her children: Robert Klutz (Teri), Sandra Poitras (Brian), Janice Smorodin (Brad), Angela Prokopetz (Murray), Sheila Klutz (Brent Sawka) and Alison Klutz (Michael Mykytyshyn); sixteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Blum; brother, Anthony Hladyboroda; and her sisters-in-law: Lena Hladyboroda, Olga Marcinkiw, and Sally Wagner; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. In Natalie’s honour, Funeral Services were held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 2, 2019, from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity, Canora with Rev. Fr. Petro Tsenov officiating. Interment followed in the Canora Cemetery. Job growth remains strong in Saskatchewan Saskatchewan saw its 14th consecutive month of job growth in September, with year-over-year employment rising by 13,300 jobs, an increase of 2.3 per cent.

Female employment increased by 4,200 (+1.6 per cent) and off-reserve Aboriginal employment increased by 4,900 (+10.7 per cent). Month-to-month employment also rose by 600 jobs from August 2019, according to a release.

The unemployment rate was 5.3 per cent in September (seasonally adjusted), down from 6.3 per cent a year ago, stated the release. Saskatchewan had the fourth lowest unemployment rate in the country (tied with Ontario), below the national average of 5.5 THE

Giving wildlife a brake to prevent collisions The Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation (SWF) has launched the second half of its 23rd annual public safety campaign aimed at preventing vehicle collisions with wildlife, primarily moose and deer.

Titled “Give Wildlife a Brake,� the campaign consists of various mass media reminders to motorists to be more alert while driving on Saskatchewan

roadways, according to a release. Brightly colored highway billboards, posters in various government offices, social media advertising and radio public service announcements will make up the bulk of the campaign.

In 2018, vehicular collisions with wildlife (12,401 with deer and 525 with moose) contributed to three human fatalities and 387 injuries and caused

an estimated $83 million in insurance claims, stated the release.

September through November are the months when the vast majority of vehicle/wildlife collisions take place. This is because the rut, or breeding season, takes place for moose in mid to late September and for deer in mid to l a t e N o v e m b e r. D u r i n g the rut, both sexes of both species are much more

mobile, especially the males who are actively seeking out females in new territories.

Wildlife has no understanding of the dangers of crossing the highway so only drivers can prevent a collision with a large moose or deer. Constant vigilance and reducing vehicle speeds at night can significantly help to avoid a collision. The SGI website (http://

This annual campaign, which also receives financial support from SGI, has been in existence for 23 years with different messages relating to collision avoidance. Previous slogans include “Slow Down and Save a Buck� and “Go S low and S ave a Little

Doe� and “Moose on the Loose�. “Public feedback from the campaign has been very positive,� says Darrell Crabbe, executive director for the SWF. “We get encouraging comments from people all over the province. Youngsters from KamKids visit and entertain at KDNH On October 31, youngsters from KamKids came in costume to visit, entertain and interact with nursing home residents.

After parading their costumes and introducing

themselves, they sang a few songs, played a few games, such as Duck, Duck, Goose; Pin the Wart on the Witch and beanbag toss into the cauldron.

Having more fun, they

proceeded to wrap resident, Jean Bettinson, up as a mummy. The residents and staff dressed up too and the kids received juice, cookies and treats before their trek back in the snow.
