Decoration Day service held at Riverview Cemetery The Kamsack Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion led Decoration Day services at the Riverview Cemetery in Kamsack on Sunday.

Participants in the service included members of the Kamsack RCMP, Kamsack air cadets, Legion members, Keri Lindsay on bagpipes and Kyler Kitsch on trumpet.

Decoration Day is a time for remembering soldiers and the decoration of graves of vete r a n s . J i m Wo o d w a r d , Legion president, said an opening prayer after the Colour Party, led by Cst.

Daniella Beirsdorfer and Cst. Igor Tarabanko of the Kamsack RCMP, marched to the cenotaph at the Kamsack Legion’s area at the Riverview Cemetery.

“Almighty God, our heavenly Father, as this day we gather round our War Memorial and decorate the graves of our fallen comrades, accept our memorial of their sacrifice, and this offering of praise and thanksgiving,” he said in the opening prayer.

Woodward led the assembled crowd in singing the hymn In the Garden.

After the Last Post was played by Kyler Kitsch

on trumpet, a two-minute silence was observed for comrade Tom Wakeman.

Kitsch then played Reveille, after which Jim Woodward spoke the Act of Remembrance.

After the wreaths were placed at the base of the cenotaph, one each for Canada, the province, the Town of Kamsack and the Legion, Woodward presented a scripture reading and homily.

Those in attendance were invited by Woodward t o d e c o r a t e v e t e r a n ’s graves with Canadian flags.

Volunteer appreciation event held Volunteers in the community were treated to a special afternoon of speakers, refreshments, prizes and participaction activities.

The Kamsack and District Nursing Home (KDNH) was decorated with the theme “Volunteers L i g h t O u r Wo r l d , ” a n d 35 volunteers were in attendance to be recognized for “the light you bring to others.”

“I would like to welcome you all here today to partake in the celebration of your time, dedication and compassion,” said Karen Rubletz, recreation coordinator for the KDNH, as she welcomed the volunteers to the appreciation event. “We consider ourselves incredibly lucky to have such a fantastic team of volunteers.”

Lorelee Davis, health services manager of the KDNH, thanked the ladies’ auxiliary who “have been with us every step of the way, providing necessary equipment and extras for a better experience for residents in our facility,” she said.

“Just to name a few, the auxiliary has purchased bedding plants for the courtyard, bingo prizes, baking supplies, Handi-Bus outing fees, admission to community events, individual presents for the residents and much needed equipment for the nursing home such as a vital signs machine and over-bed tables. Not to mention the beautiful outdoor gazebo that our residents enjoy.” “ To m e , v o l u n t e e r s across the province represent the heart and soul of our facilities,” she said. “We are so grateful for volunteers, past and present, who have devoted their time to support people who need our facility. Telling the group that there have been some changes in healthcare volunteerism in general, in regards to privacy concerns, training, hand hygiene and liability and risk management, Szumutuku’s message reiterated that “I don’t know” when it comes to how the transition from Sunrise Health Region to Saskatchewan Health Authority will impact volunteer programming, indicating that there will be 13 volunteer programs and policies that will eventually need to be rolled into one.

Her message went on to describe how volunteerism itself has changed due to limited interest in certain volunteer aspects, diversity amongst volunteers, heavy family responsibilities, aging and declining numbers in rural communities, increasing numbers of “snowbirds” requiring short-term commitments and projects as well as a new desire for web-based volunteerism.

She expressed hope that the transition would be “seamless, with no impact to frontline care. With the desire for the government to reduce administrative costs, comes the desire to have a better coordinated health care service across the province, with timely care for Saskatchewan residents, wherever they live.”

“Thank you for your efforts, and I hope to get to know you all over time.”

Cindy Hoffert and Rick Chernoff, both volunteers, then sang two songs in keeping with the theme. The words to both songs were composed by Karen Rubletz and Patty Witzko, and sung to the tune of He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands and I Saw the Light.

Each place setting at the decorated tables had a “light stick” bracelet that Witzko encouraged each volunteer to put on as a reminder that “indeed you are a light to this world.”

Jokes and banter were interspersed between the speakers, KDNH staff and volunteers, and one poem

read by Rubletz, contained the verse: “We used to go out dining, and couldn’t get our fill, now we ask for doggie bags, come home and take a pill.”

LOOKING BACK...

A Decade Ago

A member of Cote First Nation, Tina Lee Trombley of Regina, was one of 26 persons invited to Rideau Hall in Ottawa to receive a prestigious Decoration of Bravery from the Governor General for her actions in going to the aid of a man who was being beaten during an altercation at a Regina night club. ***** The SARCAN depot in Kamsack celebrated its 20 th year in the community, and the staff collected its 25 millionth container. The four members on staff were Joanne Herbster, (supervisor), Shelley Filipchuk, Lise Rochefort and Neil Peden. ***** Kamsack town council decided to allow residents to switch to back alley garbage pick-up for the summer, as has been done in past years, after a petition and a letter was received objecting to year round front street garbage pick-up. ***** Members of the Kamsack Legion band, which included Ralph Cuervo as the bugler, performed several selections during the Decoration Day service at the Riverview Cemetery after a march past the Kamsack Cenotaph. Pastor Stephen Ruten, chaplain for the Legion, delivered the address. ***** The Kamsack Phantoms junior soccer team, one of five teams attending a tournament in Swan River, returned with the gold medal.

Moe’s direction as premier still unclear The last nine months have turned into a long journey for Premier Scott Moe. The question now is: Where does he go from here?

Perhaps he doesn’t have to go too far.

Prior to entering the legislature this spring for the first time as premier, Moe was gifted with three rural by-election wins in Melfort, Kindersley and Swift Current.

It solidified the 48-seat Saskatchewan Party caucus in the 61-seat legislature (former finance minister Kevin Doherty’s seat is currently vacant), providing an important political reminder that that there are just no meaningful threats to the government’s massive majority.

That’s largely because the 12-member NDP caucus in the legislature led by

equally new leader Ryan Meili has not yet provided a viable alternative to the Sask. Party government.

Sure, the Global Transportation Hub and Regina by-pass have allowed the NDP to score some additional political points.

We s h o u l d a l s o n o t e the previous two city byelections were won by t h e N D P, a n o t e w o r t h y fact, given that the next three provincial by-elections (Doherty’s Regina Northwest seat along with Saskatoon Eastview and Regina Walsh Acres now respectfully occupied by federal Conservative candidates Corey Tochor and Warren Steinley) will all be in the cities.

But the NDP is simply not making in-roads in the Sask. Party’s rural stronghold. Anything other than another Sask. Party

majority in 2020 seems unlikely.

Winning is always the goal in politics, even surpassing the reasons why political parties want to win power. Often, it’s a case of ensuring that you win, first, and then figuring it out from there.

However, sooner or later, Moe has to reveal more about where he intends to take the Sask. Party and the province.

Yes, fighting the federal Liberal carbon tax and promoting a pipeline are popular things to do. Arguably,

they are important enough to merit the time Moe has dedicated to these two agenda items.

But when it comes to Saskatchewan moving forward, what’s next?

Well, the more questions you throw at politicians, the more likely you are to find answers. And one of the best places to pepper politicians with questions happens to be the premier’s or executive council budget spending estimates.

Last week, premier’s estimates turned into a threehour exchange between

Meili and Moe, not only a good way to measure both leaders but also a chance to gain insight into Moe’s agenda.

The premier did reveal some things, although perhaps not enough to tell us precisely where he is going.

Of interest was his talk of balancing the budget in three years, the same path that former premier Brad Wall took and one Moe continues to follow.

Asked by Meili why now, in a time of economic downturn, would the Sask.

Party government increase the provincial sales (PST) Moe provided his best, m o s t s u c c i n c t a n s w e r.

During the leadership race, people told him the price of barrel of oil shouldn’t dictate number of nurses hired or the dollars spent on education, Moe said.

It was the clearest

indicator to date of a new path for the province that deviates from the last 10 to 15 years in which Saskatchewan governments have relied on rising oil and potash prices to cut taxes and provide services and subsidies.

How much further Moe and the Sask. Party government will go becomes the next intriguing question.

We have already seen the demise of the Saskatchewan Transportation Company and attempts to add the PST to insurance premiums. Moe reversed the latter decision, much to the delight of his farming base that was paying PST on crop insurance.

Will Moe have to consider other similar measures to balance the books in three years?

There are a lot of questions in play that Moe needs to start addressing.

Letters to the Editor

Severe weather and intensive livestock operation in RM of Keys cause for concern Our family has farmed land for 115 years in the Keys Municipality, and for the most part good agricultural and animal husbandry has been utilized by friends and neighbors for all of these years.

Our land is adjacent to some

of the nine quarters designated for manure spreading by the proposed Hutterite intensive livestock operation on NE – N ½ 26 33 03 W2, and it also backs onto Stoney Creek, which empties into the Assiniboine River.

This past week between three

to five inches of rain fell between Pelly and Kamsack in a matter of hours.

Our land did not receive that kind of rainfall this time. But if it had, and manure from the intensive livestock facility would have been spread on the land quarters

designated under the proposed manure management plan filed with Saskatchewan Agriculture, the run off and drainage would have been extensive and our concerns expressed over creek and river contamination would have been realized.

Nature’s torrents of rain are always unexpected, however when they do occur, it does make clear to many of us that unforeseen events do and can bring unexpected consequences.

Reader questions pay increases for provincial politicians In March of 2017 Brad Wall cut all MLA and public worker salaries by 3.5 per cent.

Two months later he appointed 10 of his MLA’s as legislative secretaries and immediately gave them a raise

of $3,000 per year. Scott Moe took notes.

To d a y, i f y o u a r e a Sask Party Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), and your name is Nadine Wilson, you just got a nice $14,311 raise from

Premier Moe. If you’re one of the other 12 Sask Party MLA’s who just received a regular legislative secretary appointment, you are only getting an extra $3,000.

But don’t worry about this wage increase of $50,000

more per year of your tax dollars. Deputy Premier Gord Wyant (who gets an extra $55,964 for that title) says it’s a “good investment” and calls it a “modest amount”.

NDP Agriculture Critic Carla Beck disagrees. She

says that last year’s freedom of information requests asking for all documents related to legislative secretaries generated zero documents or reports.

In other words, it looks like no extra work was done

Before someone of you get the wrong idea and start to excitedly scan this column for some scandalous or taboo material, let me provide a spoiler alert.

I am writing about hair.

Greying hair to be exact.

That lovely stage where the hair is neither grey nor brunette, but rather an in-between hue better described as griege.

But catchy titles or cover images have been known to grab the reader’s attention.

I remember a young lad in my Grade 10 English

class who complained quite vociferously to me about a book which I had assigned for reading. The book was Why Shoot the Teacher by Max Braithwaite.

On the cover was a drawing of a scantily-clad woman (nothing close to what would be deemed provocative today.) The image was in reference to one small incident in the story where a woman in the rural school district is caught in a blizzard and spends the night at the teacherage. (No, nothing happened.)

However, my male student was convinced that there were some sordid details hidden somewhere in that book. “I read that book from cover to cover to find that section,” he complained. “But it was a total rip-off.”

(Hmmm, rip-off or not, that publisher might have been on to something.)

But back to my situation. I hope none of my readers will accuse me of misleading them because I used the title of a popular novel. (And for those of you

claiming to have no knowledge of this titillating book, well, you can keep denying such, but your friends know better.)

The title refers to my decision to stop colouring my hair, allowing it to take its natural course. (Well, to be perfectly honest, it’s having some help along the way.)

I was inspired to take the plunge after I saw some very sharp-looking mature women (I refuse to call myself or my peers old) sporting grey hair and it looked fabulous. So I decided that

maybe, I, too, could aim for fabulous.

Now just because I’ve decided to let my hair go grey, do not assume for one second that I have also decided to “let myself go.”

Oh no. There will be regular visits to my hair stylist for toning, highlighting, trimming, and styling. If age I must, I will do it with all the grace and panache that I can muster.

My hair will continue to be a reflection of me and my personality. And even though for the next while it

may encompass a variety of shades (probably not quite 50), I have decided that it’s time that my hair will match the lines on my face and the years in my life.

However, when it comes to my clothing, well, that’s a different story. There I will push the limits and allow my inner youthfulness to influence my choices.

Farming includes lots of hope and finger crossing When it comes to farming there has always been a generous amount of hope and finger crossing involved.

Farmers hope frosts in the spring and fall will stay away until crops are grown and harvested.

Throughout the year they hope the rains will come when needed, that it doesn’t get too hot, and that hailstorms stay away.

And, then there are the hopes that grain and oilseed prices will be good, and that the transportation system will operate without glitches so they can access the best markets in a timely fashion.

In recent years the transportation system, or more specifically the rail system, has not worked glitch-free.

In fact, it has been a choke point at times in terms of getting Prairie grain from

the farm to port, and that has caused shipping delays which have hurt farmers in their efforts to realize the best prices.

Farmers have been impacted by rail planning and performance issues since 2013/14, and the poor performance of the railways in the spring of 2018 has again resulted in problems such as higher on-farm inventories, lost sales, and increased demurrage costs.

The recent issues are not the first which have had farmers questioning how the rail companies handle grain.

The situation has been one where the federal government has been looked to in the past to smooth the relationship, or more accurately to create a structured ruleset which in essence forces the rail companies to do a better job of handling

grain.

That process continued recently with the passage of Bill C-49, which amended the Canada Transportation Act. “The new legislation includes requirements for railways to disclose data and increase transparency on performance metrics, service and rates. It is hoped that these transparency initiatives, along with the potential for reciprocal penalties in railway service agreements, will improve accountability and system performance,”

detailed a release from the Saskatchewan Wheat Development Commission (Sask Wheat.)

“Bill C-49 also provides for the maintenance of the Maximum Revenue Entitlement (MRE), which ensures railway profitability while protecting farmers from excessive rail freight rates. This was a key demand from farm groups.

The new bill introduces long-haul railway interswitching to 1,200 km, or half of the Canadian haul, which has some potential to increase competition

between railways.”

The situation is one which has had a range of grain commodity and Prairie farm groups lobbying for changes.

Bill C-49 is essentially the federal government’s response to the lobbying effort. “The passage of Bill C-49 is the culmination of a lot of hard work by producers, farm organizations, shippers and federal government officials,” said Laura Reiter, Sask Wheat Chair in their release. “The provisions that modernize the movement of grain will improve the relationship between farmers and those in the handling and transportation system and will provide the buyers of Canadian grain greater confidence in our ability to deliver the crops they need.”

The Bill may already be having an impact as

Canadian National Railway (CN) announced that it would be purchasing 1,000 new-generation hopper cars to bolster shipping capacity.

“We knew that Bill C-49 was a strong piece of legislation and now we have the proof that it truly will help modernize the shipping industry,” said Grain Growers of Canada (GGC) Vice President Art Enns from Winnipeg in a GGC release. “Grain farmers can take comfort today in knowing that our hard work in pressing for the Bill will pay off through a balanced and robust rail system.”

Clearly there is hope in the farm sector that Bill C-49 will have a positive impact on grain transportation, but past efforts have always ultimately come up short, and only time will tell if this effort has gotten it right.

Karen Rubletz, recreation coordinator for the Kamsack and District Nursing Home, (KDNH), was the emcee for the program during the Volunteer Appreciation event on May 16.

Patty Witzko, recreation worker, delivered a message on behalf of Suzette Szmutuku, the director of volunteer services for the Saskatchewan Health Authority, who was unable to attend.

May 16 was the 90th birthday of Stella Holmes of Preeceville who was in attendance at the Volunteer Appreciation event, and everyone sang Happy Birthday.

Cheryl Solnonenko, human resources manager for the KDNH, greeted the volunteers.

Kamsack artist creates Broncos memento Local artist Dustin Wilson has created a memorial tribute to the Humboldt Broncos Hockey team.

Wi s h i n g t o c r e a t e a meaningful memento for the players and their families, Wilson created a graphite pencil drawing for the team which also displays the names of each of the players who were on the bus on April 6 when a semi-collided with the players’ bus while the team was enroute to a game in Nipawin.

“I wanted to do an original work of art to be able to present to the Broncos hockey team,” said Wilson.

The Health Foundation announces lottery winners

The Health Foundation announced that their Cash Lottery, with a main prize of $1,000 a week for a year, sold out. The draw to determine the winners was held June 1 at 11:00 a.m. in the Foundation office at 41 Betts Avenue in Yorkton, said a release from the foundation.

Twenty-nine of the framed and matted prints will be presented to each player on the bus, or their family, and the number of the print will coincide with the number of each player’s jersey. There will six more donated to the Broncos support staff or families.

“The print is an original compilation of the Broncos different team logos on the goalie helmet. There are 29 names written on the piece.”

“I will have 65 framed

and matted prints for sale at a price of $125 each, to help recover the cost of the framing and matting, and getting the 35 pieces to the players and/or their families.

“This is my way to honour the Broncos team. I can relate to the players, because I played junior hockey and rode on a bus with teammates. Any athlete can relate to getting on the bus and feeling safe in the hands of the trustworthy driver.

“Coach Darcy Haugan, who lost his life in the collision, actually coached one of the teams in the NWJHL (Alta., B.C.) that I had played in when I was younger, so that connection

also was motivational for me.

Wilson says art has been his passion since his “first memory.” He has lived in Kamsack for the last 15 years, having arrived here in 2003, when some family members, who were involved with a local church, convinced him to come here to share his musical talents.

He plays guitar and drums, as well as other musical instruments and is involved in recording.

CHERKAS: Derek Alexander Cherkas July 8, 1986 - May 10, 2018, Yorkton, SK, age 31 years.

Derek was born and lived in Kamsack with his brother Ben and his parents Darryl and Margy. Derek and Ben lived in town but spent a lot of time at the Cherkas family farm, sharing good times with their Dad, grandparents, uncles and cousins. Derek was a gentle and sensitive soul. Although he didn’t have an aggressive personality growing up, he loved sports and enjoyed playing hockey and football. Derek graduated from KCI in 2004. He had numerous career path ideas. He moved to Brandon right after graduation and lived with his mom until 2008. Derek worked at Precision Toyota for a year in order to save money for school. In 2005 - 2006, Derek attended Assiniboine Community College and took Power Engineering. His first job was at Simplot in Brandon. During these years Derek joined the Brandon Boxing Club. He had a passion for boxing, jiu-jitsu and UFC. Derek was curious about the plumbing trade so he worked briefly at P&J Plumbing in Kamsack. Then he took a term job at the plant at Wyeth Organics in Brandon. When he moved to Yorkton in 2008 he started working at LDM while it was in its early stages. Derek then joined UA Local 179 and received his Journeyman Pipefitting certificate in October 2015, shortly before his diagnosis of brain cancer. While pursuing his trade, Derek met numerous people and made so many long-lasting friendships, male and female, of all ages. His natural good nature and genuine exuberance made it easy to meet people all over the province where he worked in many locations. He loved to hear everyone’s unique life story and they, in turn, were inspired by Derek. In early 2014, while attending technical training in Saskatoon, Derek met the most amazing girl, Amber Radom, and in her found his true love. He also gained the love of Amber’s family and they all became a second family to Derek. Derek loved his family and he touched all of their hearts. He had a special and unique relationship with his grandparents and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. On November 30, 2015, Derek was diagnosed with Stage IV brain cancer, a glioblastoma. Although a devastating diagnosis, Derek was positive and immediately pursued natural and unconventional treatments. Derek underwent a craniotomy to remove a large amount of the tumor and did undergo radiation and some chemotherapy in Regina. During this time, Amber was going to school but stood by Derek in every sense of the word. She was by his side as he underwent treatment and they never stopped seeking knowledge to beat this most aggressive type of cancer.

While attending DCA injections in Regina, Derek met wonderful people and again inspired them with his optimism and hope. Derek so badly wanted to cure his cancer, not only for himself, but so he could crusade for others. He wanted to blaze a trail to help others with brain cancer.

Derek has touched so many lives with his amazing strength and courage.

He is an inspiration and will forever be in our hearts. Our warrior made his mark on the world. We love you Derek. We will never stop missing you but now you can rest peacefully. Derek is loved and remembered by his mother Margy, brother Ben and fiancee Amber, grandmother Donna Cherkas, the Radom family and numerous aunts and uncles and cousins.

Derek was predeceased by his father Darryl, grandfathers John Cherkas and Mel Ralph and grandmother Agnes Ralph.

On the day of ascension, You rose to the sky God needed a warrior, You answered his cry With eyes of the ocean, We all heard your roar You’re out of our sight, But in our hearts forever more You left us all with memories In your own special way We’ll never forget your 11,617 days To my son, my lover, my brother, my friend Hakuna Matata, We’ll see you again.

WAKEMAN: A.T. (Tom) Wakeman January 27, 1924 - May 25, 2018. Tom has gone to join his wife and best friend of 65 year, Gladys. Tom was the oldest of three sons born to Art and Peggy Wakeman in Raymore, Sask. Dad spent his working life with Burns Foods both in Kamsack and Saskatoon. He was a long time director of the Saskatoon Hilltop Football Club as well as Past President.

Dad served in World War 11 in the RCAF, stationed in England. He was a proud life member of Branch 24 of the Royal Canadian Legion in Kamsack where he was Past President and an executive member for many years. Dad and Mom spent many winters in Myrtle Beach with new found friends and later in Chilliwack, B.C. with the Allinott family and other family and many friends. Retirement took Dad and Mom to Madge Lake where they spent many happy times. Here Dad enjoyed golf, woodworking and lake life with all his Kamsack friends having a very active social life. Left to mourn him and honour his memory are his daughter Pat Bladen, sons Brett, Dean (Leigha) and great-grandchildren Tristan (Rebecca) and Camille, Rick (Lois) and children Kailee (Andy) and Kent, brother-in-law Wayne Rathie (Judy) and children, brotherin-law Don Allinott, Len’s children Caren (Bob) and Barb, Don and Joan’s children Bill (Patti), Scott (Kathy), Kelly, Twyla (James) and all of their children. He was predeceased by his parents, wife Gladys, brothers Dave and Dick Wakeman, brother-in-law Len Rathie, sister-in-law Joan Allinot and son-in-law Peter Bladen. A Celebration of Tom’s life, with a Royal Canadian Legion Burial Rites, will be held at Westminster Memorial United Church in Kamsack, Saturday, June 2, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. with Gwen Reilkoff officiating. Those who so desire, may make memorial contributions to the Royal Canadian Legion, Kamsack Branch, Box 1659, SOA 1SO, Saskatoon Hilltop Football Club Legacy Fund or a charity of one’s choice. Family Fun Night well attended A fun-filled family night was held on May 23 at Victoria School for preK and Kindergarten families.

“We had 173 students and family members in attendance,” said Chantel Kitchen, teacher and an organizer.

“We served a supper of

hamburgers cooked by S/ Sgt. Kirk Badger of the RCMP, and Cody Langlois of the Kamsack fire department, potato salad made

by In Good Taste of Togo, watermelon and freezies.”

Families took part in outdoor activities such as: planting the school garden,

weeding the school flower beds and potting flowers, sidewalk chalk, blowing bubbles, sand toys, outdoor Jenga, rock painting and water play “We had on site for the kids to check out a fire truck and police vehicle, with RCMP members and

Kamsack fire department crew volunteering to man the vehicles.”

Staff that was involved in planning and operating the evening included Chantel Kitchen, Heather Netzel, Kyla Mines, Theresa Puk, Keri Lindsey, Crystal Hermary and Megan

Young workers reminded to take the young worker readiness certificate course As young people wrap up the school year and start applying for summer jobs, they should remember to look into the employment and safety rules that apply to young workers.

Most importantly, 14 a n d 1 5 - y e a r- o l d w o r k ers need to have their Young Worker Readiness Certificate Course (YWRCC) Certificate of Completion before they can enter the workforce, said a release from the ministry of workplace safety. The course teaches young workers about their rights and

responsibilities in the workplace. Students will learn the basics about employment standards and workplace health and safety.

“Although this information is useful for anyone, it is targeted towards young people getting ready to start their first job,” Don Morgan, labour relations and workplace safety minister said. “We want young workers to feel comfortable enough to ask a question when they don’t understand what is expected of them and refuse work they feel is unsafe.”

Young workers may apply for jobs and go for interviews before completing the course. They may not start work until they have provided their employer with a copy of their Certificate of Completion.

Young workers must also provide written consent from their parent or guardian. Employers are required to keep certificates and parental consent on file.

Young workers are only allowed to work limited hours during the school year. They are also not permitted to work in

certain industries under Occupational Health and Safety regulations, the release said.

More than 7,800 people received their Certificate of Completion between April 2017 and March 2018. The Employment Standards Division of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety also delivered two webinars for teachers who use the YWRCC in the classroom.

Kamsack community garden a cooperative effort The site of what used to be the Arrow Diner in Kamsack is now the Kamsack community garden, thanks to the collaboration of the town with several organizations.

The garden, spearheaded

by Candace Nelson of SIGN (Society for the Involvement of Good Neighbors) which is based out of Yorkton, and Cassandra Whalley of Health Canada, First Nations and Inuit branch, has gained support and momentum to become a reality.

Nelson and Whalley approached the Town of Kamsack with their proposal of a community garden,

based on donations and volunteer labour, and were granted access to build raised planter-beds on the town lot which is the former site of the Arrow reatauant.

With donations of lumber from the Norquay Co-op, McMunn and Yates and Prairie Barn Brothers of Yorkton, soil from KamKrete and volunteer labour and time, the nine 4 x 8 planterbeds were built on May 12.

The donated soil was put in place immediately with the help of Doug Nelson, who is employed at the Norquay Co-op and operated the Coop forklift, and six-year old

Hutch Nelson of Norquay, who handled the rake.

Duck Mountain Environmental (DME) donated the use of a 2000-gallon water-tank which was placed on site by James Perry, and a continual supply of water to be utilized throughout the growing season.

“This project is a great way for community members to learn how to grow a garden,” said Candace Nelson, who works out of the Kamsack SIGN office, located in the former Sunrise Health Region building on Queen Elizabeth Boulevard East. SIGN was started in

“We hope to create a sense of ownership of the community through growing this garden,” she said. “It will also promote work ethic: ‘tend a garden, tend a life.’

“SIGN is providing a portion of funding, and we are soliciting donors locally for the essentials needed to carry out the project.”

answer questions and provide gardening tips,” said Nelson.

The current group of volunteers is doing a smaller community garden project in Norquay in the empty lot beside Norquay Agencies.

“The use of the lot was donated for this SIGN project

by Norquay Agencies, and all other donors are the same as the Kamsack project,” she said.

PreK excursion to new ice cream store The Dixie Cups Ice Cream restaurant was the destination most soughta f t e r b y t h e Vi c t o r i a School Pre-Kindergarten class, according to Chantel Kitchen, teacher.

“In the last month, the new ice cream store has been a hot topic of

conversation in our classroom, due to Keeva Ferril’s dad being the head cook at the restaurant.

“In PreK we are always looking to childrens’ interests to guide the activities we do. Based on this interest and conversations, we transformed our dramatic

play center into an ice cream shop,” she said.

“The students took turns working at the store and being the customers.

To provide a real life experience, as a culminating activity to go with this dramatic play experience, we arranged to walk to

Dixie Cups for a tour of the new restaurant and a treat of ice cream and popcorn.”

Some parents and younger siblings went along to experience the new ice cream shop along with the students, she said.

Young Brooklyn sat on her mother Kelly Lambert’s knee during an excursion to the Dixie Cups Ice Cream store on the main street in Kamsack.

Kris Ferrill, head cook at the Dixie Cups Ice Cream restaurant, showed the PreK class the kitchen.
