Norquay Co-op Home Centre wins Outstanding Retailer Award The Norquay Co-op Home Centre was recently recognized for retail excellence in the Home Improvement industry in Canada.

The Home Centre received the national award for Best Building Supply/ Home Centre under 15,000 square feet at the 2019 Outstanding Retailer Awards (ORAs) in King City, Ont., on November 13.

Under the leadership of Justin Petelski, general manager, and direction from Darin Janzen (hardware manager) and Doug Nelson (lumber manager) Norquay Co-op has established itself as a strong, locally owned and operated organization that

values customer experience excellence, teamwork and community leadership and strength in lumber and building materials, said a release.

Customer commitment drives success of Norquay Co-op Continued from Front Page engagement, community involvement and sales growth.

Suppliers and retailers from across Canada gathered to honour the retail home improvement industry’s best hardware and building supply retailers.

The occasion was the 2019 Outstanding Retailer Awards Gala Dinner, November 13, which marked the end of day one of the 24th Annual Hardlines Conference at the Kingbridge Centre in King City, Ont., said information.

Delegates at the Hardlines Conference joined leaders from the retail chains, co-ops and buying groups at the Gala Dinner to honour their members and fellow retailers. Dealers from across the country were celebrated in eight categories covering the range of hardware and home improvement retailing formats, including a brand-new category that recognizes the entrepreneurial spirit that is at the core of this industry.

The winners are carefully chosen from a field of high-quality nominees submitted from across the country. The winners stood out within this elite group thanks to their ability to exceed in the areas of good business practice, customer relations, innovation and niche marketing, the release concluded.

Kamsack Community Choir to present Noel Festival a celebration of the Christmas season and winter A concert of Christmas music will be presented by the Kamsack Community Choir at the Westminster Memorial United Church on December 15.

For this concert, there will be about twenty

voices, said Susan Bear, the director.

There will also be two pianists, Deb Cottenie and Wendy Becenko, with “a couple of our members adding in additional instrumentation,” she continued.

“The concert is titled Noel Festival, and is a celebration of the Christmas season and of winter. The choir has been staging a Christmas concert for around 12 years, with another major performance

in June.”

Choir members begin rehearsals in late S e p t e m b e r, r e h e a r s i n g once a week, and then in the two weeks prior to the concert, they will be assembling twice a week, she

explained.

As always, refreshments will be available during the intermission. Everyone is welcome to attend, and there will be a silver collection at the door.

The choir will also

be singing carols at the Moonlight Madness in the Broda Sportsplex, following the Santa Claus parade on November 29, and will be participating in Music Sunday at the United Church on December 8.

Kamsack Drama Club to present annual dinner theatre at the OCC Hall Kamsack Players Drama Club members are in rehearsals to prepare for their annual dinner theatre to be

Successful author reading for Titanic buffs held at Library A published author who wrote a book about the Canadians on the Titanic was in Kamsack recently for an author reading.

The Kamsack Public Library hosted Alan Hustak on November 2 for a very successful author reading with around 20 people in attendance, according to organizer Betty Dix. “Alan was pleasantly surprised by the number of people who attended the event,” said Dix. “He sold all the books he brought to the event and commented that he had been to larger centres and had smaller crowds.”

Although Hustak has written numerous books, he was in Kamsack to entertain “Titanic buffs” with a reading of his work Titanic: The Canadian Story, a book that chronicled the lives of the Canadians aboard the illfated ship.

The book chronicles the untold saga of the 130 passengers aboard the luxury liner who were bound for Canada.

Hustak began his re search ten years before the blockbuster movie came out.

He conducted interviews across Canada with direct descendants and relatives of Canadians who sailed on

the Titanic’s maiden voyage, said information on the Internet. In the process he unearthed historic photographs and stories which contribute another dimension to the familiar tale.

Hustak’s chronicles are more poignant than fiction, such as the tale of Quigg Baxter, the young Montreal hockey player who risked all to smuggle his Belgian fiancée aboard, the Fortune f a m i l y f r o m Wi n n i p e g which failed to heed a clairvoyant’s warning, and Harry Markland Molson, the richest Canadian aboard who was persuaded by Toronto millionaire Arthur Peuchen

to extend his stay in England and sail home with him on the Titanic.

Hustak discloses the scandalous behaviour of second class passenger Joseph Fynney and tells of the young honeymooners Bert and Vera Dick of Calgary who started an enduring legend about the disaster.

Some books insist the Titanic’s last victim, found in a lifeboat a month after the disaster, was from New Jersey; others say he was from Chicago. In fact he was Thomson Beattie of Winnipeg. These stories and others have been overlooked or ignored by American

and British historians and enthusiasts who have written about the Titanic.

“Alan has ties to Saskatchewan,” said Dix, adding that the author ’s mother ’s family is from Stockholm. “Although the day was very cold, we were thrilled with the attendance, which included four persons from Preeceville.”

The youngest attendee was her grandson, Grayson Dix, who “was thrilled” to meet the author and had a “great time” at the event.

“Everyone had a chance to enjoy goodies and refreshments with the author after the reading, in a

relaxed atmosphere,” Dix continued. “Our Library is such a beautiful space, and we are lucky to have this venue to hold such events.”

“They would make great Christmas gifts,” Dix said.

As for the Titanic, it will never really be known who was all on the ship before it sank, because the ship’s manifesto was incorrect, Dix concluded

Annual cadet fundraiser supper at Legion a success in spite of a rainy evening A major fundraiser held by the Kamsack air cadets was held on November 18 at the Legion, and by all accounts it was a success, even though the weather was less than co-operative.

November rain caused some concern for fundraiser organizers, and was possibly the reason why attendance numbers were slightly down from past years, explained Karen Bodnaryk, CI (Civilian

Instructor).

A s p a g h e t t i s u p p e r, complete with Caesar salad, garlic toast, dessert and coffee or tea rounded out the menu. Vegetarian and gluten free choices were also offered.

The members of the air cadet squadron, along with Bodnaryk and K a r e n To u r a n g e a u , C O (Commanding Officer) had prepared the meal, set up, served and then cleaned up

the Legion after the event.

“This is the last cadet fundraiser of the year,” said Rhena Musqua, cadet parent volunteer helping with the event. “We are selling 50/50 tickets at the door. This supper also offers take-out service, which is quite popular with those who support this initiative.”

M u s q u a ’s s o n , M a r k Peequaquat, has been with the air cadet squadron for 2 years. “He’d drop anything to participate in cadet activities,” she said.

“The program offers lots of opportunities for the cadets to go on trips, participate in range activities, go gliding and so much more.

As well members of the squadron get to participate in activities with other cadet groups, and they meet new people and make new friends. The program is excellent.”

“The cadets are very appreciative of the community support for their fundraisers,” said Bodnaryk. “ We w i l l b e d o i n g i t again in the spring,” she concluded.

LOOKING BACK...

A Decade Ago

A tradition that began more than 15 years ago at Kamsack Comprehensive Institute, the Christmas Hamper Campaign, had continued as students endeavoured to fill hampers with goodies that were to be distributed to families in the community in time for the holidays. ***** Millie Currie, a member of the UCW (United Church Women) in Kamsack, a group which has been knitting mittens and toques for students at Victoria School for a number of years, had brought her supply of 16 pairs of mittens and about half a dozen toques to the school. ***** The Kamsack air cadets had again sent Christmas goodies to the soldiers fighting in Afghanistan. The four large boxes were taken to the post office to be mailed to Burlington, Ont., and then they were to be taken by the armed forces and shipped to Afghanistan. ***** A Sturgis woman, Linda Greba, who billed herself as being “one step below a psychic,” had come to Kamsack to entertain and meet with clients at Linda Scobie’s Linda’s Garden Path. She had done accident reconstruction work in the past, explaining that she had the ability to “look through the eyes of the deceased,” to see what happened at the scene of a fatal accident. *****

Quick resolve to rail strike good for unity We need to refocus our attention on practical solutions to existing problems if this country is going to work.

Also helpful would be to not create new, impractical problems for the purposes of scoring political points.

That would seem to be the problem with Alberta Premier Jason Kenney’s notion of exploring a province-wide police force to replace the RCMP, a very expensive answer for a province that purports to be struggling with budgetary and financial constraints of its own.

The country cannot and will not work if we are creating problems faster than we solve the many, many ones that naturally exist.

So perhaps the focus of the federal Liberal government needs to be the 3,200 Canadian National Railway Co. workers that went on strike at midnight on November 19, a direct threat to oil, potash and grain shipments in this province and across the country.

Of course, one gets the right of conductors and yard operators to walk off their jobs at CN as part of the free and collective bargaining process. Given that a key point of this dispute is the working conditions that are directly related to public safety that’s part of moving any commodity on rail, one might even have a little sympathy for at least the concerns of rail workers that are striking.

That said, one can not overstate how important it is for a company that carries $250-billion worth of goods annually to be working efficiently.

It is especially critical right now because the lack of

pipeline capacity means we are seeing a bottleneck of petroleum and chemical products that account for 20 per cent of all CN annual revenue via moving 180,000 barrels a day. (By comparison, grain and fertilizer account for 16 per cent of CN’s business.)

It is expected that CN Rail will supply 5,650 hopper cars per week throughout November and one cannot understate how important that is.

Last week was unseasonably warm through much of western Canada, which means now is the time to move grain, oil seeds and pulses before it gets colder. In December when shipping slows down, the weekly grain car allotment is expected to fall to 4,150 cars a week, a level it is expected to stay at until March.

A prolonged rail strike will only feed into the existing problems.

So one can understand why Premier Scott Moe and his Saskatchewan Party government feel the strike needs

to be addressed immediately, possibly through a recall of Parliament before December 5, to deal with back-to-work legislation.

In fact, it might be better if the Sask. Party government and Agriculture Minister David Marit take other pre-emptive action like seeking more hopper cars in December and January to deal with a backlog in moving what still is a very large crop this year.

Perhaps everyone is still holding out the hope that this railways strike will be resolved in days and weeks instead of weeks and months.

Regardless, all this would seem to be a perfect example where Prime Minister Justin Trudeau could demonstrate good faith in the federation by recognizing the seriousness of this problem and putting resources to a quick resolution.

One can understand the frustration when so much doesn’t work.

Unhelpful is anger over problems that are then repeated on social media. Instead, we need to focus on solutions.

Almost as unhelpful are acts that seem more about political statements than solutions to real problems, like Alberta’s exploration of its own province-wide police force to replace the RCMP. It would be more costly and hurt Saskatchewan where Mounties are already trained.

We should be thinking about whether the alternatives are worse.

And we should be focussing on solving problems in this nation that do exist. That’s how this country works.

Quebec sure is one to talk, when it comes to energy I’ve seen a lot of TV clips of late, showing Bloc Québécois leader YvesFrançois Blanchet basically trash talking the West, and Alberta in particular. He would support western separation if they wanted a “green state,” for example, but not an “oil state.”

Because oil is bad. He thinks we should stop producing it.

He doesn’t think Quebec g e t s A l b e r t a m o n e y. I t comes from the feds, he says, conveniently forgetting that money for equalization is almost entirely coming from Alberta, and mostly going to Quebec.

Blanchet is not a provincial premier, nor is he in power federally. He’s the leader of a minor party during a minority government, albeit one that has enough seats to hold the balance of power. And he’s driving Alberta Premier Jason Kenney crazy.

Indeed, it’s not a stretch to say Blanchet is driving the entire oilpatch crazy.

It sure must be nice to have a $4 billion surplus this year in Quebec. So much so that they’re opening up the wallet for more social program spending and cheaper child care, beyond what is already ridiculously cheap. In the meantime, Alberta public servants are wondering how many of them will have a job in the future, and when, if ever, they will see a decent raise again?

The federal equalization formula, which excludes renewable resource revenue but includes non-renewable resource revenue, is very rapidly driving a stake into the beating heart of this confederation.

Let’s look at Quebec for

a minute, so blessed with renewable hydroelectricity it thinks it walks on water instead of just damming it.

Ever hear of the Churchill Falls project?

B a c k i n 1 9 6 9 Newfoundland got into financial trouble building a massive hydro dam project in Labrador at Churchill Falls. Hydro-Quebec stepped in and bailed it out, but in doing so, essentially forced the Newfies to sign one of the most lopsided, predatory contracts in Canadian history. It ensures that Quebec gets an enormous amount of hydro electricity at a fixed rate, $2 per megawatt-hour (0.2 cents per kilowatt-hour).

My power bill charges me 14.2 cents per kilowatt hour.

Newfoundland is getting 0.2 cents per kilowatt-hour for its Churchill Falls power.

Feehan and Melvin Baker, e n t i t l e d T h e C h u rc h i l l Falls Contract and why Newfoundlanders can’t get over it. To put this future price in perspective, in 2004 the average wholesale price of electricity in Ontario was about $52 per MWh, and in 2003 Hydro-Québec received an average of approximately $85 per MWh for its electricity exports.

How much power does that plant generate? More t h a n a l l o f S a s k P o w e r, combined. Churchill Falls produces about 30 million gigawatt-hours of power per year. SaskPower supplies 25.7 gigawatt hours per year, as of 2018-19.

That means Churchill Falls produces more power than every single coal, gas, wind, solar, cogen and hydro plant in all of Saskatchewan, combined. And Quebec is getting a very large chunk of

it, and profiting immensely from it, for basically free.

And despite numerous legal challenges brought forward

by Newfoundland, the Supreme Court has allowed this to continue, to 2041.

Tell me again why renewable resources aren’t considered in the equalization equation? Especially given that Newfoundland, in dire shape right now over its follow up to Churchill Falls, the Muskrat Falls project, is paying into equalization and Quebec is withdrawing?

And then there’s shale gas. Quebec, apparently, has

lots of it. You know, good, clean natural gas with a low carbon footprint? But they haven’t developed any of it.

A few years ago, I interviewed the CEO of a company that drilled 15 wells in Quebec. They had a discovery in 2008 which could have been game-changing, if only they could frac.

But Quebec brought in a de facto moratorium on fracking.

That company had acquired a substantial amount of permits for land, but couldn’t do anything with it.

If they could frac, the CEO figured they could supply a substantial amount of Quebec’s domestic natural gas needs.

But you see, it’s easier to rely on gas from the northeast U.S., these days, and the money taxed from the gas industry in Alberta which goes to support equalization. Why develop

your own resources when you get the money without effort, or risk?

Ye s , A l b e r t a , Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Newfoundland and, to a much lesser extent, Manitoba, are blessed with oil and gas. But other jurisdictions, like Quebec, Manitoba and British Columbia, are blessed with hydropower. In a world where green energy is considered the ultimate goal, shouldn’t they now be considered the have provinces?

Quebec took advantage of Newfoundland in a way that is unconscionable. And with $4 billion surpluses, their “have not” status is a total farce.

Let’s see Quebec have to pay their way in the world, and maybe we’ll see some drilling in the St. Lawrence Va l l e y. T h e n w e ’ l l s e e whose resources are socially unacceptable.

Counting on science for future food and energy needs While I appreciate there are those who have begun to doubt science, I for one am a believer that our future as a planet lies solely with what science can create in the coming years to deal with whatever issues we face.

That will be particularly true in agriculture.

Unless some disaster arises to alter the course, we know the population of earth continues to trend upward.

And there is not even a whisper of discussion that the world needs to address that trend in some meaningful way. So there will be a growing number of mouths to feed. That means a continued need for world food stocks to grow. Food production only occurs by the scientific development of better crop varieties and the development of better cropping systems to enhance yields at an affordable cost of production.

It’s the same thing when it comes to our energy needs.

Science will open doors to producing energy in ways we can barely imagine.

We know, for example, that animal waste creates methane. It is a by-product of intensive production that has been red-flagged as a concern in terms of producing

greenhouse gases, although whether a big dairy herd produces more than the millions of bison which once roamed North America is another column altogether.

Clearly there is a need to deal with methane production from livestock today in the face of concerns over climate change.

So it was with great interest that I read a recent Western Producer article regarding the methane from a 2,900 cow dairy herd in California being collected and ultimately used to power a fleet of trucks.

Using methane to power a truck is not new, but

connecting its production to a cattle farm is at least a rather innovative approach, and one that could reasonably be copied at other farms, or even municipal sewage plants, if the cost can reasonably be recouped.

Of course innovative energy production is popping up all over the place.

There has been work incorporating solar panels into asphalt highways, an idea that on the surface is brilliant in the sense black asphalt attracts heat and the potential, if it works could be immense. Of course it only works if science works out the idea.

Then there is the idea of energy from flowing water in a place that is not exactly on the top of anyone’s list.

Since 2015, the city of Portland has been partnering with Lucid Energy to install electricity-generating turbines in its gravity-fed water pipes.

Again, it’s innovative and something which could be replicated across multiple municipalities.

Challenges will be many as we move forward and we need to be supportive of the scientific community in finding the answers.

Kamsack and District Indoor Rodeo Committee makes donation to Eaglestone Lodge at open house event

A highlight of the open house event held at the Eaglestone Lodge on November 20 was a

donation made by the Kamsack and District Indoor Rodeo Committee to be used towards kitchen

“We are very thankful for the donation and all the wonderful people and organizations that support Eaglestone Lodge,” said Cindy Hudye, director of operations at Eaglestone Lodge.

For the first time in awhile, Eaglestone Lodge has openings for seniors who require level 1 and 2 care, Hudye said. The Lodge held an open house to give people a chance to come and tour the facility, talk with the staff and enjoy dainties and refreshments.

The Polka Pals provided entertainment during the afternoon.

Since April, Tracy Gulka of Canora has been the charge nurse at the facility. Hudye has been with the Eaglestone Lodge for around 13 years.

“We offer home away from home living, independent suites and respite care,” Hudye said. “We were pleased to hold an open house event today to let people see what services have to offer.

“For anyone interested in more information about the Lodge, give us a call or stop in,” she concluded.

Charitable gaming grants provide approximately $1.7 million to communities across the province, including Kamsack The provincial government is providing approximately $1.7 million to more than 900 community groups across the province through the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority’s (SLGA) charitable gaming

grant program.

Groups in the Kamsack area received a total of $1,533 in grant funding, according to a release.

“The charitable gaming grant program provides a financial boost to the fundraising efforts of charitable groups and organizations across the province,” s a i d G e n e M a k o w s k y, minister responsible for SLGA, in the release. “Our

government is pleased to be able to provide this support as it acknowledges and enhances the good work these groups are doing in their communities.”

Among the grants provided by SLGA this quarter: Yorkton and surrounding area received $122,455; Moose Jaw and surrounding area:

$107,479; Humboldt and surrounding area: $87,514; Kindersley and surrounding area: $87,215; and Weyburn/Estevan and surrounding area: $47,359.

Charitable gaming grants are based on 25 per cent of net proceeds raised through licensed charitable gaming activities such as bingos, raffles, breakopen

tickets, Texas Hold ’em poker and Monte Carlo events. Groups that conduct licensed charitable gaming activities and events do not have to apply for the charitable gaming grant.

Charitable gaming reports submitted by the groups are used by SLGA to automatically calculate grants.

KCI Spartans junior football season concluded T h e K a m s a c k Comprehensive Institute (KCI) junior Spartans football team had a really good season that wrapped up earlier this fall, according to Tyler Lorenzo, coach.

“The team played very well, and won three of the four games they played,” Lorenzo said. “We were victorious over Wakaw 19-7, and 40-12, and St. Brieux 34-24, and lost to Porcupine Plain 27-14.

“Two were home games, and we had excellent community turnout for both games to cheer on the players. We won one home game and lost one.

The team won both away games.

The team is comprised of students in Grades 7 to 9.

“It’s been a pleasure to coach this dedicated group of athletes during

Whitehawk, Matt Bedore, Ethan Krawetz, Tanner Reilkoff and Cameron Allard, with Andrea Marsh as team manager.

The next game saw the Novice 1 Flyers play Melville. With 12 youngsters on the team, the coaches are: Tyler Lorenzo, Jeremy Allard, and Garrett Whitehawk, with Shanley Allard as team manager.

Taking to the ice next was the Novice 2 Flyers, with 11 team members, against a Melville team. Coaches are Devin Shabatoski and Kirk Badger, while Jared Ruf performs as team manager.

The next game saw the Atom Flyers play Yorkton.

There are 15 youngsters on the Atom team, and coaches are: Charles Keshane, Shaun Lawless, Ian Quewezance and Gerrard Kiefer. Andrea Marsh is team manager.

The final game of the day saw the Peewee Flyers

take on Preeceville. There are 17 members on the peewee team, and coaches are: Jeremy Allard, Kent Hembling, Ryan Gareau and Derek Shankowsky.

Team managers are Christie DeBruyn and Michelle Hembling.

In addition, there was a raffle table and 50/50 draw.

Kamsack Minor Hockey had also been selling tickets on the “Ultimate Hockey Experience.”

A total of 800 tickets were sold, and the draw was made during Minor Hockey Day. The winner was Kimberly Tourangeau, and the prize was a trip for two to New York which included flights, accommodations, tickets to an NHL game and some spending cash.

“Kamsack Minor Hockey appreciates the support and acknowledges everyone who bought tickets on the draw,” Allard concluded.

Annual Christmas in November craft and home business sale sees increase in attendance The annual sale of crafts and products sold by homebased businesses known as Christmas in November was held at the OCC Hall on November 17.

Held as a fundraiser for the Kamsack Playhouse Theatre, this year the sale featured a number of vendors coming to the Kamsack OCC Hall for the first time, featuring a diverse range of products, with many handcrafted items on display.

The event was a “huge success,” said Brenda Wyllychuk, prime organizer and president of the Kamsack Playhouse Theatre board. “Our vendor number

was up from last year, and so was the attendance figure, with people coming from Kamsack, Madge Lake, Togo, Hyas, Calder, Canora, Pelly and, more.

“Our good variety of rainbow auction items, donated by the vendors, created a lot of interest and the auction went very well.”

She also noted that the featured lunch menu which consisted of three homemade soups, sandwiches and homemade treats, “was a hit” with those in attendance.

The lunch menu was popular with those who attended the Christmas in November craft and trade show and sale on November 18, and the tables offered shoppers a chance to relax while browsing the many vendor offerings.

“The wicker baskets available at Flower House are excellent because they can be utilized for Christmas displays and then double as summer planters,” Wishnevetski-Grozik said.

Anna Thickson of Sturgis operates Granny’s Handmade Products, a line of “all natural products containing no perfumes or chemicals.” Selling soaps, essential oils and deodorants, Thickson was a first time vendor at Christmas in November, having been

a crater and selling at other venues for around 25 years.

Former resident Terri Brischuk and her husband Lorne of Yorkton had a table set up under the name of the store which she used to operate in Kamsack, Terri’s Stitch and Craft, specializing in handmade gifts and art. “It’s our first time at the Kamsack show in a number of years,” she said.

Donna Franklin of Burgess Beach, under the name Through the Fire, has been making hand made pottery out of porcelain for around 10 years, and was a returning vendor. “I just love to transform clay into a work of art,” she said. Her display featured an array of “Babushchicks,” hand made, individually named chicks which she enjoys creating.

Saying she has been crafting and repurposing for many years, this was her third year at Christmas in November.

April Shotts of Danbury, a “returning favorite” vendor under the name Sew Sweet Creations, had home made goodies to delight just about any taste.

Another first time vendor, Shannon Broda Vanin, featured knitting and homemade crafts.

Carol Belley had a display of BeeSeal, an all natural, “proudly made in Canada” product that is 100 per cent organic and is a “multipurpose, multi surface protector, water proofer and restorer.”

Another first time vendor was Sammy Hollenberg of Langenburg, who is known as the “Singing Chef.”

Hollenberg is a long-time chef, married to a musician who builds and sells steel guitars to Hawaiians, and she has recorded a number of musical CDs. Under the name Sammy’s Cottage Kitchen, Hollenberg had been commissioned by Hemp Foods Canada to create and develop recipes containing healthy hemp products such as hemp hearts, hemp oil and avocado oil.

Included at her table, she

was selling bags of Heart Smart Hemp Granola, containing such organic ingredients as quinoa flakes, quinoa puffs, flax, chia seed, oatmeal, pumpkin seeds, honey and maple syrup and a variety of nuts and fruits with all natural flavors, including orange and lemon zest, vanilla, maple and coconut.

Local resident Cole Smith has been filming Hollenberg from her home in Langenburg for three seasons of Sammy’s Cottage Kitchen, shown on local cable TV. “The Playhouse board would like to acknowledge the great group of volunteers who help make this event a success,” Wyllychuk

said. “The board is grateful for the sponsorship we received from the Kamsack Co-op food store and In Good Taste catering.

Without all of them, our

event would not have been as successful.”

Norquay Recreation Board reviews events and facilities Recreation events and facilities were reviewed by the Norquay Recreation Board at its regular meeting on October 7.

Discussing the C o m m u n i p l e x Management Board (CMB), Ruth Demetrick said volunteers had painted the bleachers in the rink.

Lilia Livingstone said that the Ukrainian Dance Club had 38 dancers, and the club would be selling Little Caesars pizza kits. A bottle drive was to be held on October 21, and the Malanka 40th Anniversary

Banquet and Dance is scheduled for January 18, 2020.

For the Legion, Laura Dahl reported that they were in the midst of Remembrance Day preparations. The poppy campaign started the last week in October, and most of the money brought in will go to the Norquay and Sturgis schools as they prepare for the students participation in the poster, essay and poem judging contest. The November 11 noon meal was open to public and still $20 per person.

Dahl also said the Walking Club would begin in November, after a dormant summer.

For Norquay School, Nicole Wright encouraged everyone to follow them on Facebook @Norquay School, and said that: the school was to observe Fire Prevention, Education, Library and Sports Weeks in October; the school had a pancake breakfast on October 24, and SADD (Students Against Drinking and Driving) were to be selling cowboy caviar jerky.

On behalf of the NICE Centre, Iris Nokinsky said that they had held a free pie and coffee day on October 2 to recognize Seniors Week, and had a very good turnout.

For curling, Ken Newall said that first wing night was to be held November 1.

About the Playschool, Amanda Holinaty noted

that: the chip fundraiser went very well; there will be an In Good Taste fundraiser before Christmas, and there are 11 kids in four-year-old class and 10 kids in three-year-old class.

Kristy O’Soup said for figure skating that the season was being planned and registration forms would be sent out.

On behalf of the Timberline Band Association, Reagan Foster said that the Band kids would be selling chocolates.

For the Active Aging Group, Delphine Howard said that: the program was to begin in October, Mondays and Fridays 10 to 11 a.m. Howard, Diane Romanow and Marge Stratechuk were to be taking a training course in Yorkton on October 9 at the Yorkton Hospital.

Everyone was asked to hand in the grant request forms, and it was said the grant cheques were in. The next meeting was set for November 18.

Federal government gives $1.6M to combat sexual harassment in Saskatchewan The federal government has announced funding in the amount of $1.6 million to address sexual harassment in Saskatchewan workplaces.

A coalition of local stakeholders, comprised of the Saskatoon IndustryEducation Council; the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce; Sexual Assault Services of Saskatchewan; CREATE Justice, College

o f L a w, U n i v e r s i t y o f Saskatchewan (U of S), and the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission are responsible for the allocation of those funds in Saskatchewan, said a release.

“Sexual harassment occurs at a disconcerting rate, affecting all industries and professions in our province,” said Norma Gunningham-Kapphahn, executive director the

Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission. “The funds from the federal government will be used to develop a province-wide, multitier strategy to address and prevent sexual harassment in the workplace.”

The strategy, to be designed and implemented by the coalition and others, aims to dispel the myths and misinformation surrounding sexual harassment, train employees and

employers, increase public awareness, and provide access to employment counselling for people in Saskatchewan who have experienced sexual harassment in the workplace.

Through a related federal initiative, the Public Legal Education Association (PLEA) of Saskatchewan will receive separate funding to set up a program that provides free legal advice for people

who have experienced sexual harassment in the workplace.

“This is a big issue that cannot be tackled alone,” said Heather Heavin, associate Dean, research and graduate studies at the U of S. “No one agency, o rg a n i z a t i o n , o r s e c t o r has the ability to address sexual harassment. We all have an important role to play in creating and maintaining safe and respectful

workplaces.”

Michele Geres, director of programs at the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce agrees.

“Our mission is to make Saskatchewan the best place to live and work,” said Geres. “Together, we can combat sexual harassment in the workplace and implement programs and services that best reflect the needs of the Saskatchewan business community.”

OBITUARIES

REBALKIN - Born in Canora, Sask. and raised in Kamsack, Sask., Bill passed away peacefully at the age of 87 at the Guelph General Hospital on July 3rd, 2019, surrounded by his family. Predeceased by his parents, William Sr. and Pauline, and his sister, Kathleen, Bill is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Jean (Hayes), and his adoring daughter, Martha. He is sadly missed by his cherished grandsons, Connor and Duncan, and his favourite son-in-law, John David MacNeil. Bill will also be missed by his cousin in British Columbia, Karen McDonald.

Bill had a long career as an ironworker, including running his own company, Epsilon Reinforcing Steel, which was his pride and joy.

After retirement, Bill enjoyed golfing, travelling, cruising with Jean to numerous countries around the world, hanging out with his coffee buddies, and the company of his beloved cats.

At Bill's request, cremation has taken place.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Guelph General Hospital.

“Fine” does not always mean that everything is fine

By Kaare Askildt “Fine” is a word that can mean a variety of things.

First and foremost, it is an adjective, and when the word is spoken by a female who is putting a special emphasis on it, the male recipient of the word “fine” should better head for the hills. Because it isn’t fine at all, in fact it is everything but fine. On the other hand, when a man says “fine,” there is no danger because he really means that it is OK. Ole and Sven were enjoying their Saturday afternoon at the Bottoms Up Bar, sipping on Akevitt chased with a beer.

“I really don’t understand Lena,” said Ole. “I asked her if I could have a tattoo, and she said to me, fine, have a tattoo! The next thing I know she’s moaning and complaining about the bagpipers tuning up in the back yard!”

They had a good laugh, and then Sven said, “Your wife Lena told me you’ve aged like fine wine.”

“What did she say?” asked Ole. “She said you’ve become more complex and more flavoursome with NOTICES / NOMINATIONS

“Yeah, well, she also said that you’ve acquired more body,” added Sven.

Hans and Kari were having some marital problems.

A Sticky Note was left on the fridge by Hans’ wife that said this is not working! Hans opened the fridge door and the light came on.

He added to the sticky note that the door works just fine.

The word “fine” is also an adverb, as in “he barely escaped her wrath with a margin so fine.”

Truls planned to sneak out and play poker with the boys, but he had not intended to make his getaway “this fine.” As a noun it means a financial penalty.

Perhaps it was a female that came up with that noun.

Knut called home. His hands were shaking and in a trembling voice he said, “Honey, I’m in the hospital, but don’t worry because I’m fine.”

After a long silence that seemed to last forever, Emma replied, “You must stop this nonsense. You’ve been a doctor for five years NOTICES / NOMINATIONS

now!”

Olaf, a multi-millionaire bachelor in his late 50’s, in a quest to improve his physique to attract women, had started working out at a gym with a personal trainer. He was on the stationary bike when a fine female specimen came in and started working out.

Olaf looked at his personal trainer and asked, “which machine should I use to impress her?”

The trainer looked at Olaf with a deadpan face and replied, “Use the ATM in the lobby.”

And now from the animal kingdom, a “true” story with a moral.

One fine sunny day a rabbit came out of her hole in the ground to enjoy the fine weather. The day was very nice, and she enjoyed it so much that she became careless and a fox snuck up behind her and caught her.

“I’m going to eat you for lunch,” said the fox.

“Wait,” implored the rabbit, “you should wait at

least a few days.”

“Oh yeah? Why should I wait?” asked the fox. “ We l l I ’ m j u s t f i n ishing my thesis on The Superiority of Rabbits over Foxes and Wolves,” explained the rabbit.

“Are you crazy?” wondered the fox. “I should eat you right now. Everybody knows that a fox will always win over a rabbit!”

“Not really, not according to my research anyway,” replied the rabbit.

“If you like, you can come into my abode and read it for yourself. If you are not convinced, you can go ahead and have me for lunch.”

“You really are crazy,” said the fox.

But since the fox was curious and had nothing to lose, he went with the rabbit. The fox never came back out.

A few days later the rabbit was again taking a break from writing and sure enough, a wolf came out of the bushes and was

ready to eat the rabbit.

“Wait, wait, you can’t eat me right now!” yelled the rabbit.

“And why would that be, my furry appetizer?” asked the wolf.

“I’m almost finished writing my thesis on The Superiority of Rabbits over Foxes and Wolves.”

The wolf laughed so hard that he almost lost his grip on the rabbit.

“Maybe I shouldn’t eat you; you really are sick, sick in the head,” said the w o l f . “ Yo u m i g h t h a v e something contagious.”

“Come and read my thesis for yourself,” said the rabbit. “You can eat me afterwards if you disagree with my conclusions.”

So, the wolf went down into the rabbit’s hole, and never came back out.

The rabbit finished her thesis and was out celebrating in the local lettuce patch. Another rabbit came along and asked, “What’s u p s i s ? Yo u s e e m v e r y happy.”

“Yup, I just finished my thesis,” replied the rabbit.

“Congratulations,” said the other rabbit, “what’s it about?”

“The Superiority of Rabbits over Foxes and Wolves,” said the rabbit.

“Are you sure?” queried the other rabbit, “that doesn’t sound right.”

“Oh yes, come and read it for yourself,” said the rabbit.

So together they went d o w n i n t o t h e r a b b i t ’s hole. As they entered, the friend saw the typical graduate’s study, albeit a rather messy one after writing a thesis. The computer with the controversial work on it was in one corner. To the right was a pile of fox bones, on the left were the wolf bones.

In the middle was a large well-fed lion.

The moral of the story: The title, the subject and the research for your thesis doesn’t matter. All that matters are who your advisor is.

Author visits Kamsack Public Library and entertains pre-K students Published author Lorraine Johnson of Yorkton was at the Kamsack branch of the Parkland Regional Library on November 19.

Johnson has written her first book titled Baxter and the Blue Bunny, a book suited for young children, aged three to six.

Nicole Larson, librarian at the Kamsack Public Library had a chance meeting with

the author at a trade show known as Sunflower, which is held annually in Yorkton, and invited her to Kamsack to do a reading with the Victoria School prekindergarten class.

The book is described as “the fetching tale of a lovable pup, a heartfelt story about wanting to belong. Baxter has finally found his forever home, and he loves his new family. But everything goes

Johnson’s information found on the Internet says that she had always dreamed of becoming a writer for as long as she could remember.

Now retired, she was always tossing around story ideas, and her desire to write has resurfaced. She is proud to call

Baxter and the Blue Bunny her first book, illustrated by Wendi Nordell, the illustrator of several children’s and young adult books.

In conversation, Johnson mentioned to Larson that she had received inspiration from Kamsack’s own published author, Marilyn Lachambre, and was spurred on to write the book, which was published earlier this year.

Lachambre’s book, Angel Blessings, which she both wrote and illustrated, was published in 2017.

Students from the prekindergarten class had a chance to visit with a published author, Lorraine Johnson, on November 19 at the Kamsack Library.

Amendments to Saskatchewan’s tobacco control act to limit vaping passed Amendments to The Tobacco Control Act were passed unanimously by the Legislative Assembly allowing the province to move quickly to ensure regulation of vaping and vaping products is in line with existing tobacco legislation. “Quick passage of this legislation demonstrates how important it is to

further protect our youth from vaping,� said Jim Reiter, health minister, in a release. “I want to thank our partners and health stakeholders for their support for this legislation and look forward to consulting with them again on the regulations and how to best address flavoured vaping products.�

Over the next months,

the ministry of health will proceed with the necessary supporting regulations to address both the restrictions on vaping and vaping products and the enforcement. New signage prohibiting vaping will be made available for public buildings, retail locations and school properties. It is anticipated that The Tobacco Control Act

amendments and supporting regulations will be in force in early 2020.

Introduced on November 5, the amendments in Bill 182 will: • restrict the sale of vapour/e-cigarette devices and products to individuals 18 years of age and older; • prohibit the display of vapour/e-cigarette products in a retail business

Rama Commemorates the Holodomor On November 23 at Saints Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church at Rama, the Rama Golden Jets invited Rev. Joakim Rac to share his thoughts on the Holodomor famine following the Divine Liturgy.

R e v. R a c t h o r o u g h l y described the stages of development of the genocide policy and the years that led up to this horrific famine.

The central figure of the famine was Joseph Stalin, who was born in Gori, Georgia in the Russian Empire and was General

secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1922 to 1952.

“He was a ruthless man who was determined to industrialize the country very quickly, thus creating an artificial famine,” said Rac. “This meant attacking the farmers by taking most of their land and from whatever few acres were left, he imposed on them a quota that they had to fulfill by giving the required number of bushels to the State.

“The quotas became bigger and bigger and due to the drought years of the

1930s, they could no longer fulfill their quotas and thus were forced to give something they never had. The Soviet authorities confiscated everything and whoever resisted was sent to the labor camps in Siberia.”

Rac mentioned that the famine didn’t discriminate nationalities as it affected not only Ukrainians, but also the Polish, Hungarians, Russians and others who starved and died.

“So we are remembering the millions of victims today and praying for them as well as praying for our own country to develop good policies and good government to promote justice and peace throughout the world.

“If there is no God, the worst possible human takes over and becomes God for everyone,” he concluded.

The commemoration continued with the lighting of the Holodomor candle

by Ron and Pat Leniuk, members of the Rama Golden Jets.

All those present joined in singing Eternal Memory in Ukrainian followed by praying one decade of the rosary. The final hymn was God, Our F a t h e r, We A d o re Yo u .

At the Holodomor commemoration in Rama on November 23, Rev Joakim Rac spoke regarding the development of the genocide policy and the stages leading up to the famine.

Final Crop Report for the period November 12 to 18 Some producers in the east-central region were able to return to the field in November and make some harvest progress. Most producers have wrapped up harvest operations while a significant number still need co-operative weather to get the rest of the crop in the bin according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s final weekly crop report for 2019. Some fields remain wet and there are indications from producers that most of the

crop out will be harvested in the spring.

The east-central region has the least amount of crop combined in the province at 83 per cent of the crop in the bin as of the reporting period. This is up slightly from 82 per cent at the end of October.

Any crop harvested now is being taken tough or damp. Aeration and drying operations continue on many farms as they have for most of harvest.

Crop yields vary across

the region and there are many reports of higherthan-expected yields. Crop quality across the region is poor for almost all crops due to varying factors such as sprouting, staining and bleaching. Crop that was harvested early on fared better for quality.

Heading into winter, cropland topsoil moisture conditions are rated as 18 per cent surplus, 80 per cent adequate and two per cent short. On hay land and pasture, topsoil moisture

is rated as 15 per cent surplus, 79 per cent adequate, four per cent short and two per cent very short.

Average dryland hay yields for the region are as follows (in tons per acre): alfalfa one; alfalfa/ brome 0.9; other tame hay 0.8; wild hay 0.6; and greenfeed 1.6. The majority of livestock producers indicate that they have adequate to surplus supplies of feed (hay, straw, greenfeed and grain). Hay quality going into winter is

rated as 69 per cent good and 31 per cent fair.

Crop reporters indicated that winter wheat and fall rye acres are significantly down from previous years.

A late harvest caused fall seeding delays for some producers.

Farmers are busy trying to complete harvest, hauling bales and grain, putting machinery away and finishing up other fall work.

Across the province, crop yields vary greatl y, m a i n l y d u e t o t h e

extremely dry conditions this spring and summer as well as moisture received throughout the growing season. Many areas have reported average to above average yields. Yields for hard red spring wheat are reported as 45 bushels per acre, durum as 39 bushels per acre, oats as 88 bushels per acre, barley as 66 bushels per acre, canola as 38 bushels per acre, peas as 38 bushels per acre and lentils at 1,392 pounds per acre.

Kamsack track-and-field cross-country age class provincials The Kamsack track-andfield club sent three athletes to the cross-country age class provincials at Deer Park in Yorkton on October 19. Grace Shabatoski (2009) and Ella Ruf (2008) had expressed interest in attending as club members, after a successful school cross-country season, according to Chantel Kitchen, coach. They were both eligible for the pewee age group.

The meet is not only an individual competition, but also a team competition. Any team that enters three or more athletes in one age category is able to collect points for their team. To round up the age group, Kacee Kitchen

(2010) entered the competition as well. Individually Grace placed eighth, Ella ninth and Kacee 10th, and as a team they collected enough points to earn a silver medal, Kitchen said.

“Kacee will remain a pewee for two more seasons, Grace for one more season and Ella moves up an age group next year,” Kitchen continued. “We will be looking for new club athletes to round out teams in both age groups next year (and potentially other age groups as well). It was a great experience for the girls running in their first provincial meet, competing with some of the top athletes from

around Saskatchewan. Next year’s race will be hosted in Saskatoon.”

The next action for Kamsack’s track-and-field club will be in December when younger athletes have the chance to compete in a Tykes meet. This meet is for athletes born in 2010 and younger. The only athletes in the club at this time of those ages are Kacee and Emmett Kitchen, any child that is interested in the sport of track and field can register for the event on their own through prathletics.com, said Kitchen.

Club athletes will start training again in January, according to Kitchen. The club is open to any athletes Grades

5 to 12, (mature, younger athletes have been accepted occasionally on a case by case basis), who are interested in training for the sport of track and field. Interested students do not have to be from KCI, as it is a community club.

Athletes are expected to have a strong work ethic and willingness to try and learn new things, Kitchen said.

Opportunities to compete in indoor meets in Saskatoon and Regina will be available.

A parent meeting will be held at the beginning of January for interested athletes’ families, alternatively they can contact Chantel or Kevin Kitchen for more information.

Family Resource Centre celebrates National Child Day

Events were held across Canada on November 20 to celebrate National Child Day, and one such event was held at the Family Resource Centre in Kamsack.

Families with children age 0 to prekindergarten were invited to participate in activities for National Child Day that included crafting a calm-down bottle, a musical activity and a nutritious snack.

KamKids Daycare and Wild Pigeon Daycare of Cote First Nation were also invited to participate in the day’s activities.

Organizers were Andrea Veregin and Megan Peters, early years facilitators at the Family Resource Centre.

Jackie Washenfelder of Yorkton, a music therapist who operates Positively Music Therapy of Yorkton, was there and, along with her daughter Halle, led the youngsters in a spirited session of music in which the youngsters were encouraged to participate and move along to the music.

Peters led the youngsters in a crafting project where each youngster made a “calm down bottle,” explaining that the exercise was all about “self-regulation,” and was part of the My Curious Brain program from the Saskatchewan Prevention Institute.
