Who says you have to go outside to have a parade?

After many hours of preparation, residents of Kamsack Nursing Home celebrated “Mardi Gras” with floats, masks, crows and decorations. A parade of wheelchair floats made its way to a presentation on the history of Mardi Gras and music associated with the festival. See story and photos on Page 6.

Real estate boom hits small town Saskatchewan As Canadians navigate uncertain times and soaring inflation, pressures from the economic turmoil have become a heavy burden on the nation. Despite this, there are a few industries that seem to have dodged much of the national stress. With an array of personal reasons driving real estate sales, small town Saskatchewan realtors in particular are reporting a substantial increase in business.

Jodie Kowalyshyn of Community Insurance in Canora has been a licensed realtor since 2006. She said that 2021 was the busiest season she has ever seen over the span of her 15 years in the

industry.

“Normally, we have close to 40 properties on the market,” said Kowalyshyn.

“Currently we’re down to just 15 – and the demand is showing no signs of slowing down. We’re expecting sales to take off even more once the weather changes and the snow melts.”

With a focus on Canora real estate, Kowalyshyn said the fastest selling homes are definitely those listed under $100,000.

“Just last week, we listed a smaller house in town. We posted a sign in the front yard, and by the next day – it was sold.”

Kowalyshyn said that while her clients are looking to Canora for a variety of reasons – the most popular are affordability and proximity to Yorkton.

“Many of our clients are first-time home buyers who want to live in a small town, but still enjoy all of the city amenities within a short commute,” said Kowalyshyn.

“We have a great little town with so many events and community development projects on the go that will serve residents – especially families with children. We are also well-known for our high rate of senior citizens, and we are seeing quite a

few properties come up for sale – like estate sales, or people who want to downsize to live with family or move into senior housing. Older people often tell us they have grown tired of the work involved with maintaining a house – like cutting grass or shovelling snow. There are also a number of farmers in the area looking to retire and either sell all of their land or subdivide and sell parts they don’t want to manage anymore. Unless a property is priced way too high, it won’t last long on our listings. It’s definitely a seller’s market right now.”

Another established local

realtor, Gladys Secondiak of RE/MAX Bridge City Realty, said her properties are selling so fast, she can hardly keep up with the paperwork.

“I’ve been running steady.

I work seven days a week.

You’d think COVID-19 would have slowed things down, but actually, it has stirred buyers up. In all my years in this industry, 2021 was the busiest year yet.”

Secondiak said that a good portion of her buyers are out-of-province and it’s not uncommon for properties to be purchased sight unseen.

“I’ve seen a huge increase in impulse buyers,” said Secondiak. “A lot of people

are telling me that they want to escape. They are watching the news and they are frightened. They are worried about economic depression and it has put them in survival mode. They want to be self-sustaining, so they are looking for ways they can live off the land. Acreages are the most in demand. People are saying they want to plant their own vegetables and even look to buy full quarters of land so they can hunt and provide their own food.”

Kamsack Recreation Report

By Stephen Dutcheshen Now that restrictions have lifted, folks may be wondering what is going in town lately. Here is a list of the many things to do in Kamsack these days.

• T h e c ro s s - c o u n t r y ski trails will be set every couple of days as long as the snow lasts.

• The outdoor skating rink will be open to the public for as long as the ice

will hold up.

• Indoor soccer continues every Friday night in the gym at the Kamsack Comprehensive Institute.

• The Duck Mountain Ski Hill is open every day until March 20 from approximately 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Days of the weekend may have longer hours.

The last two days of operations at the ski hill will be on Saturday, March 26 and

Sunday, March 27.

• Kamsack Minor Baseball registration is now open. There is a link on the Kamsack Ball Facebook page. There is also an AGM that everyone is welcome to attend. It will take place at the Kamsack Comprehensive Institute on Monday March 21, at 7 p.m., in the KCI library.

• Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation is

hosting a Fish Artwork Contest for grades 4-6.

Details can be found on the organization’s Facebook page.

• The Kamsack Recreation Department is looking at bringing Yuk Yuk’s Comedy to town in early May. There is also talk of bringing in some live music to town during the spring/summer/fall months.

• Uncharted, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, will be playing at the Kamsack Playhouse on Friday, March 18 and Saturday, March 19. Based on the popular video game, t r e a s u r e h u n t e r Vi c t o r “Sully” Sullivan (Wahlberg) recruits street-smart Nathan Drake (Holland) to help him recover a 500-year-old lost fortune amassed by explorer Ferdinand Magellan.

directly on company portals.

We did “Stockings for Seniors” this Christmas, which provided gifts for each senior in the care homes. We hope to continue this every year. COVID has created some challenges for volunteering or holding fundraisers, but we hope that with lifted restrictions we will be able to get out in the community. Even though HUB International is a global company, we are still a local small town brokerage.

Secondiak added that Saskatchewan’s small town real estate market has seen its share of booms and busts, and there is no telling how long this hot market will last.

“The way things are going right now – I think this is great for our small

communities. I would say for anyone considering selling a small house under $100,000 or more so $50,000 – the time to list is now. Of course, there are always unknowns – like the potential for interest rates to go up. But I do not see things slowing down at all throughout the summer.”

Musician from Canora releases new album and video Ron Kalmakoff, originally from Canora, has announced the release of his new music video You Be The Leaver from his current album, Nature.

Kamsack RCMP Activity Report

By Cst. Cameron Wellington The Kamsack RCMP responded to 40 calls from March 13 to March 20.

This included two 911 Act calls, three Mental Health Act calls, five mischief calls, two theft related calls, a well-being check as well as a handful of other occurrences.

Lost in Mexico Kamsack RCMP received

a report on February 1 of a missing person who had currently traveled to Mexico. Members worked with Interpol as well as CBSA to try and locate the last whereabouts of the individual. After a worldwide search was completed, an RCMP member received a card thanking them for the efforts they put into the case. Members then attended the residence of the

missing person to figure out what the card was about. On March 15, the man who was missing came to the door himself. That’s one way to say you are no longer missing. Long story short, he got his passport stolen and his medication was taken away so he was not able to function fully – which caused him to get lost in Mexico. He was then taken in by a taxi driver in Mexico

NDP: Rural families virtually, digitally isolated as Government neglects connectivity Opposition Critic for SaskTel and Crown Investments Corporation Trent Wotherspoon has called on the Sask. Party government to address the lack of Internet and cellular service outside Saskatchewan’s large urban communities.

“Cell and Internet services are not luxuries: They’re essential services in 2022. Whether for business, for school, or just being able to catch the latest episode of Yellowstone, connectivity plays a daily role in all of our lives,” said Wotherspoon in a release.

“Yet for so many rural and Indigenous communities, it is spotty at best, nonexistent at worst.”

Nearly a year has passed since the APAS Task Force issued a report on rural connectivity. The report called on the province to leverage crown corporations to increase connectivity for Saskatchewan people.

SARM president Ray Orb reiterated at his organization’s annual convention that serious action is needed to improve connectivity.

“Ten of eleven recommendations of the APAS Task Force have been swept

while he got his documentation back together. He then finally found his way home. Please let the RCMP know if a missing person is found, as we take that very seriously.

Where is my chainsaw?

On March 13, Kamsack RCMP members received a call of a stolen chainsaw.

The chainsaw was last seen in the back of a pickup truck when it was taken.

Members got the consent to search a potential suspect vehicle for the chainsaw,

but alas the chainsaw is still at large.

Scrambled attitude Kamsack RCMP members received a call of a vehicle in the KCI parking lot that was egged on March 14. Eggs are meant to be fried, scrambled, poached or hard boiled. Yes, I know there are other possibilities, but this is not a cooking article. Ladies and gentlemen of Kamsack, egging people’s vehicles, house’s or any kind of property is not acceptable. It is important to

find more productive things to occupy your time that do not affect the lives of other members of the community in a negative way.

Careful Kamsack RCMP members were heading back to the detachment when they noticed a female stumbling down the road. The female almost walked into the police car as it was driving. Members stopped and arrested the female and brought her back to the detachment for her own safety.

Government policy sometimes makes little sense

The app was designed to help Toronto residents discover how well various restaurants have done in recent health inspections. ******* At the Sask Cup finals at Table Mountain, a young Kamsack skier, Tori Todosichuk, was named the top under 14 female skier in the province. It would be nice if there was consistency in the approach of government on issues.

You will not always agree with, or support a p o l i t i c a l v i e w, b u t those who do more than rail against a party they d o n ’t s u p p o r t , w i l l a t least recognize we elect those who tend to do what they feel is best for the future of the country. And that vision can be quite different from party-to-party, which is why we have such heated debates.

At present the federal Liberal party has its political eye set rather firmly on the target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Canada moving forward in hopes of addressing what they see as the human impact causing climate change.

Of course many readers here will be shaking their heads that climate change is a false reading of data at best, and a flat out conspiracy

having been created for some nefarious reason, but there is mounting science that something is going on. Since we d o n ’t e x a c t l y h a v e a n alternative to living on this planet we probably should be looking at how best we might help nature on this one.

The Liberals have hung their hats on the carbon tax as a way to get people to undertake better practices to reduce emissions. People do tend to react when something hits them in the pocketbook, so the idea has some merit that if they are taxed they’ll make better decisions in terms of what they use and do in terms of things

creating greenhouse gases.

But, anything with the word tax is never particularly popular, and the carbon tax is much-hated by many Canadians.

That said, it is an effort on behalf of the Liberals.

But, then turn the page to another day and the system in another area is stalling science being available in Canada.

In late February, the European Union approved use of a feed additive which can reduce methane emissions from cattle by 30 per cent or more.

Livestock, in particular cattle are definitely methane emitters, and

anything that can help agriculture be less of an issue in that regard should be applauded.

But, here in Canada, the product may not be on the market for years because Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency have classified the additive as a veterinary drug.

This is one of those stumbling blocks that has long escaped me, why the science in one country is basically ignored in another. In this case the EU is not somewhere with questionable regulations. In fact, generally they are more stringent in regulating farming.

And in Canada we have a government clearly wanting this country to be ‘greener.’ It seems a perfect opportunity for some gentle persuasion or legislation if needed, to provide livestock producers access to have less impact in terms of methane emissions.

The joy of starting seeds By now, some of you may have started some seeds.

What a lift for the soul to see those tender little shoots opening! I remember how my Mom loved starting her seedlings, especially tomatoes. She planted them in cutdown milk cartons, each labelled and all recorded with variety and date planted. They began their lives in a cozy spot under the bed in our spare room and were checked daily or even twice a day. When they sprouted, they were moved onto the windowsills. Mom lovingly checked these babies every day, turning them around so that they would all get equal sun. If you have ever started tomatoes, you will know about their fresh, distinct aroma.

Whenever I smell that delicious smell of tomato plants, I am instantly back at my Mom’s side, and can see her beautiful smile of excitement as a new season began!

One concern was damping off. Damping off is a fungal disease that causes the seedling to rot at the base of the plant or in the root. This is a disappointing sight for gardeners! There can be several culprits to damping off: soil that is too wet, soil that is cold, planting our seeds too deep, or if humidity is very high. The spores of the dastardly fungi that cause damping off live in the soil, and once they have affected the plant, there is nothing that can be done.

But we can still do our best to save our plants from damping off. We must be sure to use good potting soil

The Garden Grapevine that drains well. We should try to plant our seeds close to the top of the container, (that means we should fill the container with soil almost to the top) so that when the seedlings come up, air is moving around them. We shouldn’t crowd our seedlings. We must take care not to overwater the seedlings, and should water early in the day so that they are dry by evening when temperatures in our homes cool down. And, very important, we should be sure there is good air circulation. A small fan placed a safe distance away from the plants will keep air currents moving. There are also fungicides available, but remember, these can do nothing to revive a plant that has already succumbed to damping off.

And of course, whatever you plant, record the data in your gardener’s notebook. The other day I found one of Mom’s garden notebooks. What a delight! How special

and interesting it was to read through, seeing her neat handwriting listing how many tomatoes were planted on a certain day, and when they came up. I made a cup of tea and savored reading the notebook, and once again Mom was with me. Our notebooks are great records for every season, because even though we think we’ll remember gardening details, it’s easy to forget!

When Mom had tomatoes that did exceptionally well, she often saved the seeds. This was done by picking ripe fruit, at its peak or even a bit beyond when it was starting to get soft, and ‘fermenting’ the seed. What does this mean? It is the method of cleaning and separating the seed from the gel sac that surrounds it. Mom always used to do this by cutting the tomato and carefully removing the seedy pulp. She would spread it on a paper towel on a plate and leave it on the counter. In time the gel sac rots and dries up, leaving behind the tomato seed.

When the tomato seeds were dry, Mom would carefully scrape up the seeds, put them in an envelope, label it, and store the seeds in a dark, dry space until next spring.

I have read about this process being done in a jar, but I am familiar with Mom’s method, and it always worked just fine. Gardeners always have a favorite way to do things!

War breaks out in Ukraine and there MAY be an oil shortage, gas prices soar. The working poor can’t afford to

put gas in their vehicles to go to work, oil companies make billions.

This causes inflation and the working poor struggle

to put food on their tables, corporate business makes billions.

The government puts up interest rates to curb inflation

and the working poor struggle to keep a roof over their heads, banks and rich people make billions.

To all the bullies of the World. BEWARE!

By Wes Bloom Like most people in the world, I was totally stunned a couple of weeks ago to hear of the recent Russian invasion of the Ukraine. To be perfectly honest, I never really thought it would happen.

Like so many folks, I threw my hands up in the air in absolute shock and utter disbelief. How could this even happen in 2022?

Unbelievable. And impossible. Or so I thought. Yet it happened, nonetheless.

And there didn’t seem to be much the world could do to stop it, at the time.

It made us all realize how helpless and vulnerable we are, and how inadequate we were in the moment.

What’s most disturbing to me is that there is

yet another ‘World-Bully’ alive and living on the planet today - Vladimir Putin - the likes of which have not been seen since Saddam Hussein, the Iraqi dictator, who was ultimately captured, convicted of unbelievable war crimes, and finally hung on December 30, 2006.

Perhaps, like me, you’re left standing there, scratching your head trying to understand how one single, power hungry bully, could cause so much pain and suffering for so many people in the world today. It’s not possible for him to justify such blatant disrespect and disregard for human life and suffering.

As a result of this unprovoked Russian

invasion, things have become so unbearable for the Ukrainian people, that nearly 3 million souls have fled to neighboring towns and countries for refuge. Before February 24, 2022, when Russia invaded, the Ukraine was home to more than 43 m i l l i o n p e o p l e . To d a y, terrified men, women, children, and seniors are fleeing for their very lives - many, with nothing more than the clothes on their backs. Imagine, if you will, having to run for your very life. Leaving behind everything that you worked so hard for all of your life. Heading into a dark, uncertain future.

All because of one sick, demented, and crazy man.

How is it possible, that a dictator - a tyrant really, and a monster - could even think that such behavior would be acceptable in the eyes of the world?

Thank goodness that the Ukrainian people - at least those who are able - are standing up to the terrorist Putin and are determined, against incredible odds, to never give up. Ukrainian p r e s i d e n t , Vo l o d y m y r Zelensky, stands tall and defiant in the face of such a formidable enemy - the Russian ‘Bear.’ He, and his courageous countrymen have become heroes in the midst of this devastating nightmare they find themselves in.

And in so doing, they have become an inspiration to those of us who

fear bullies, dictators, confrontation, and war.

What they have taught us is, that no matter the cost, i t ’s b e s t t o s t a n d u p t o the bullies of this world.

What Russian president Vladimir Putin failed to understand was the resolve, determination, and incredible strength of the Ukrainian people who are not about to lie down and die without a fight. What he failed also to recognize was that the world, even in the midst of a paralyzing and crushing pandemic, would rise up to stand beside the Ukrainian people and offer them much needed help and support.

I was ‘taken aback’ a short time ago as I viewed a somewhat concerning Internet meme. It showed

a photo of the elder Clint Eastwood sitting quietly on his front porch in the cool of the evening, drinking a beer. The photo was taken from one of his most recent films called Gran Torino, and warned: “Wait until the people who just want to be left alone get involved.”

The world is now involved - reluctantly - in this tragic, senseless battle a g a i n s t t y r a n n y. I f t h e Ukrainian struggle and people have taught us anything about this war against their freedom, it would be that it’s time to send a message to the bullies of this world: “We’re DONE. So be warned. And beware!”

That’s how I see it at least. From where I stand.

As restrictions lift, support local businesses using your social media

By Nick Kossovan When the local economy is strong, the community is strong, which is good for everyone.

With restrictions being lifted, it’s time to show local businesses some love and assist them in returning to their pre-pandemic level of business.

The obvious way to support local businesses is to frequent them. Another way to support businesses in your community is to use your social media to get the word out about businesses that offer products/services you feel are worth digitally evangelizing. Social media engagement and shoutouts can have far-reaching effects.

Besides helping your local economy, you’re helping shape a business’s online reputation, being a part of their success, which I assure you’ll feel good about.

Here are six “social media ways” you can help local businesses get back on their feet post-pandemic: 1. Use Facebook’s ‘Businesses Nearby’ tool.

The first step is to discover local businesses you’re not aware of.

Though you probably shop at businesses near your home, I guarantee there are more nearby, within y o u r c o m m u n i t y, b u s i nesses you can give your business to. In May 2020, Facebook and Instagram added a feature to help their users find local businesses. ‘Businesses Nearby’ is a section within Facebook and Instagram that lets you see what businesses are posting within a geographical radius, which you can set and adjust, view the hours they’re open and options they offer for pickup/delivery, make a booking, or message them.

Check out ‘Businesses N e a r b y ’ i f y o u h a v e n ’t already. I guarantee you’ll be surprised at how many businesses you weren’t aware of are in your community.

2. Like their stuff and follow their page/ account.

When it comes to showing your support for a

local business, the lowesthanging fruit is to like (press the heart) and follow their social media page/account. When you follow a business, its promotions, events and updates will appear in your feed, which you can then like and share. So, give local businesses some much-needed love with a thumbs up or double-tap and take a few minutes to go the extra mile and leave a comment.

3. Write a glowing review.

Online reviews are enormously vital to business success!

Like word-of-mouth, favourable recommendations create traffic to a b u s i n e s s . To d a y m o s t people use the Internet to research purchases or find a restaurant or service (accountant, lawyer, landscaping, plumber). Over 70 per cent of consumers give significant weight to reviews before making a buying decision or visiting a business establishment; therefore, a business’s online reputation is

a critical component to its success.

Top 8 places to leave a review.

1. Facebook Ratings and Reviews 2. Foursquare 3. Google My Business 4. Homestars (appliance repair professionals, contractors, renovators, handyman) 5 . O p e n Ta b l e (restaurants) 6. TripAdvisor (hotels, travel, restaurants, entertainment venues).

7. Yelp 8. Zomato (restaurants) Take five minutes to write a review on one or two of these sites. If you can only leave four or five stars, that’s better than nothing.

4. Share your experience.

When you have a positive experience with a local business—great food/service, attentive customer service, great deals—don’t keep it to yourself. Share your experience, uploading photos and videos. Make sure you tag the business, so they’ll

be notified of your post and use relevant hashtags. (e.g., #Ward24, #ScarbTO, #pizza, #localbusiness) Sharing photos of you using the product or service or shopping at the business will bring your physical support online.

Include the business’s address in your post, their website, and telephone number, so your followers can easily locate and/ or contact the business. As well, use the social media platform’s ‘tag location’ feature. When you’re at a business location on the business’s Facebook page ‘Check In.’ 5. Repost/Retweet.

Whenever a business posts something of interest, such as a video, picture, or link to a new blog post, repost/retweet to increase engagement and give the post visibility to your followers.

(You get extra positive Karma points if you add a thoughtful comment along with relevant hashtags.)

6. Subscribe.

Many businesses rely on email marketing to

communicate with and expand their customer base. Therefore, they focus on building their lists to whom they can email marketing content and promotions. Sign up for your local busin e s s ’s n e w s l e t t e r a n d if relevant forward relevant to your family and friends and share on your social media accounts.

Small businesses are the backbone of our community. They’ve been the hardest hit by the COVID p a n d e m i c . Wi t h s o c i a l media, you can support local businesses easily, conveniently, and most importantly, efficiently and show the world you are proud of the community you live in.

Kamsack Nursing Home hosts “Mardi Gras” parade

KFRC hosts baby massage program for local parents On Wednesday, March 16, the Kamsack Family Resource Centre hosted a free baby massage program for parents with children newborn to 12 months. The workshop was led by Lindsey O’Quinn, Registered Massage Therapist and owner of Refresh Massage Studio and Spa. The KFRC described baby massage as “a wonderful way to teach babies positive touch that also helps improve bonding, digestion, and communication.”

By Karen Rubletz Residents of Kamsack Nursing Home celebrated “Mardi Gras” thanks to the hours of preparation by recreation workers, Patty Witzko and Marianne Francis.

A lot of time was spent crafting floats, masks, crowns and various decorations. Organizing costumes, beads, and music associated with “Fat Tuesday” was an exciting new idea that was planned to incorporate residents, family members, and staff.

Everyone had a good time watching each other get dressed and decorated for a live, musical parade that proceeded throughout the hallways of the nursing home, bringing smiles and laughter to all.

Gathering after the parade in the solarium for a group picture, Marianne Francis made a presentation on

Brian Puk, (sitting in the wheelchair) headed to the Mardi Gras festivities with a push from family member, Theresa Puk. Following closely behind was Walter Shymko. the origin and history of “Mardi Gras” followed by music associated with the festival.

a huge “thank you” to the staff and family members that showed up and participated. New Orleans has nothing on us!

After an unusually long winter, the Kamsack N u r s i n g Home came alive with colour in a special event inspired by “Fat Tuesday” and New O r l e a n s Mardi Gras celebrations.

Kamsack Senior Girls basketball team crowned regional champs The Saskatchewan High School Athletic Associations basketball regionals wrapped up this past weekend.

The tournaments, played throughout the province, determined the qualifiers for HOOPLA, which tips off Friday in Regina.

Moving on to the provincial championship round are the Kamsack Senior Girls, the Norquay

Senior Girls, and the Norquay Senior Boys.

Over the weekend, the Kamsack Senior Girls basketball team secured a spot in the championship round with a deciding victory over Assiniboia with a score of 81-48.

The Norquay Senior Boys basketball team defeated Langham over the weekend in a score of 9169 and will also advance

to HOOPLA provincial championships.

Naloxone kits now available to combat overdose The Government of Saskatchewan continues to expand public access to free take home Naloxone kits to help prevent overdose deaths in our province.

Naloxone can temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, potentially providing the time for medical help to arrive, stated a release. Residents who are at risk of an opioid overdose, or friends and family who may witness an opioid overdose can now receive free training and naloxone kits from more local pharmacists.

Free take home Naloxone kits are now available in more than 76 communities across the province at 225 locations including 71 pharmacies, as well as fixed and mobile harm reduction sites. Since the Take Home Naloxone Program started in 2015, more than 29,000 Take Home Naloxone kits have been distributed, with more than 6,800 confirmed to have been used to temporarily reverse an overdose event.

Prairie Ice moving on after Division Final sweep The Prairie Ice Female U15A hockey team is on a roll, sweeping through the first three playoff series in the minimum of six games, including a sweep of the Parkland Fire of Melville in the South East Division final.

Game one in Melville on March 15, a 2-1 win for the Ice, was a defensive battle according to head coach Ryan Hauber. All the scoring took place in the second period, with the Ice potting the first two goals and the Fire responding late in the period. Goal scorers for the Ice were Jordyn Seversen of Pelly

and Jessica Madsen of Theodore, both unassisted.

It was a relatively cleanly played game, with each team assessed only three minor penalties.

“They took it to us in the first period,” said Hauber “They outshot us by about 8 or 10 shots, but we kept it scoreless heading into the second.

Our goalie Brooke Taylor played well all game.

In the second period we started to move the puck better and scored two quick ones. Then in the last 20 minutes we played solid defence.”

The Ice won the series

with a Game 2 victory in Canora on March 18 by a 5-1 score, thanks to a fast start where they scored two goals in the first three minutes. The teams traded goals in the second period, and the Ice added two insurance goals in the third.

1,202 new child care spaces coming to 21 Saskatchewan communities The Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan are announcing the addition of 1,202 new licensed not-for-profit child care facility spaces in 21 Saskatchewan communities as they continue to support families by providing better access to high-quality, affordable, flexible and inclusive child care. These additional spaces are part of a shared goal to create 28,000 new child care

spaces in the province by the end of March 2026. The announcement follows the December 2021 expansion of 601 new spaces.

“Every child deserves the best start in life,” said Canada’s Minister of Families, Children and Social Development Karina Gould in a release. “These additional child care spaces will help grow our Canadawide early learning and child care system, allowing

more children and families from Saskatchewan to access high-quality, affordable, flexible and inclusive early learning and child care.”

“Our government supports parents who are seeking child care services,” Education Minister Dustin Duncan said. “This increased investment will allow more opportunities for families to find accessible child care near them.”

T h e C a n a d a Saskatchewan CanadaWide Early Learning and Child Care Agreement, signed in August 2021, provides a federal investment of nearly $1.1 billion over five years for child care in Saskatchewan. With an average of 50 per cent child care fee reductions already announced in the province, the goal is to bring down average fees for regulated child care to $10-a-day by

the end of March 2026.

The 1,202 new spaces will be integrated into communities either through new child care facilities or added into existing facilities. Some existing facilities may also choose to add additional sites.

The communities that will benefit from the spaces announced are: Asquith, Bethune, Bredenbury, Grayson, Gull Lake, Hague, Humboldt,

Funding for the creation of licensed child care spaces is allocated by the province throughout the year and is approved based on community need and each organization’s readiness to move into the development stage. As part of the overall goal to create 28,000 new regulated child care spaces, the province continues to encourage the licensing of existing child care homes.

The Government of Canada is making a transformative investment to build a Canada-wide early learning and child care system in partnership with provincial, territorial and Indigenous partners. The goal is to bring fees for regulated child care down to $10-a-day on average by March 2026. By the end of 2022, the Government of Canada is aiming to reduce average fees for regulated early learning and child care across the country by 50 per cent to make it more affordable for families.

More than half of Canada’s provinces and territories, including Saskatchewan, have either announced child care fee reductions or have already achieved an average cost of $10-a-day or lower for regulated child care.
