Kamsack Family Resource Centre hosts massive book giveaway As residents in the Kamsack area look forward to the fun and excitement of a town light-up this Friday, those with children under the age of nine in their family may want to consider adding one more stop to their holiday schedule.

On the afternoon of December 10, between the hours of noon and 6 p.m. the Kamsack Family Resource Centre, (KFRC) located at 241 Second Street, Kamsack, will be hosting a free book giveaway for local families thanks to a donation of an entire crate of high-quality, brand new books.

“These books are absolutely amazing. They would make wonderful Christmas gifts,” said Andrea Verigin of the KFRC. “And all of the books are age appropriate for children from pre-K to Grade two.”

Everyone is invited to attend the pop-up book event – including parents, grandparents, cousins, aunts, and uncles.

“We have plenty to give away,” said KFRC’s Megan Holodniuk. “For those who are on a fixed income that are worried about being able to afford putting gifts under the tree this year, please come down to the

KFRC has held membership with First Book Canada for four years.

Instead of picking up the usual 200-plus books in Regina this year, the KFRC staff were surprised and delighted that they had qualified to receive a full crate consisting of over 1,000 books. Unable to handle that size of a load, Verigin and Holodniuk had to make alternate arrangements for the massive delivery.

Among the selection of books to be given away on Friday afternoon are beautifully illustrated children’s fiction books, activity learning books in a variety of school subjects for pre-K to Grade four, workbooks featuring popular Disney and Pixar characters, and sturdy picture books appropriate for toddlers.

organization’s website, it is stated that almost 25 per cent of Canadian households don’t have a single book. Low literacy levels place children at a disadvantage that perpetuates poverty.

Verigin and Holodniuk said they are so grateful the work done by the First Book Canada team that they intend on planning a fundraiser in the near future that will help give back and support the organization.

For those attending the free pop-up book event, masks will be mandatory and all COVID-19 precautions will be in place.

Successful return to Agribition wraps up Regina – Canadian Western Agribition (CWA) successfully wrapped up its 50th show November 27 welcoming 85,179 attendees over six days.

CWA’s 50th show kicked off on Monday, November 22, with free admission and a free pancake breakfast, courtesy of CN. The show saw record-high conference in both the Grain Expo and Indigenous Agriculture Summit, as well as over 100 international guests from

20 countries, despite travel restrictions. Hundreds of exhibitors and more than 2,000 head of livestock and performance horses called Agribition home for the week.

“It’s incredible to think about the coming together of a community that happened here,” said CWA President Chris Lees in a release. “Right from the Burning of the Brand through to the Agribition Beef Supreme, seeing the

people show up because it is important to them and important to agriculture is something special. The fact that Agribition’s 50th could be home to that is something we’ll always be proud of.”

CWA’s online presence also continues to grow.

Over the course of the week, more than 3,700 people live-streamed CWA’s livestock shows and sales and Agribition’s virtual video content was viewed

more than 31,000 times.

CWA expanded its Virtual Education Program and introduced live Q & A sessions with 2,500 students tuning in.

“There is a different story to tell this year, but a successful one nonethel e s s . ” S a i d C WA C E O , Chris Lane, “Registrations for our Grain Expo and Indigenous Agriculture Summit were record-setting, merchandise sales were three times higher than

normal, and our rodeo ticket sales didn’t miss a beat, including a complete sell-out on Saturday night.”

CWA also raised a record-setting amount for charities at the show, including more than $20,000 for the CWA Scholarship Fund through the raffle of a 1971 GMC pickup, and an all-time high of over $74,000 for STARS (Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service) “What we saw this year was a highly engaged

attendee at Agribition.

Whether it was exhibitors or visitors; when people came, they really participated in the programs, sales, and had a positive attitude around being at the show,” says Lane.

Financial statements and full show statistics will be available at CWA’s Annual General Meeting in April 2022. Show dates for the 51st edition of Agribition are November 28 – December 3, 2022.

Grand Opening of New Metis Elders’ Lodge Saskatoon In a press release on December 3, the Central Urban Métis Federation, Inc. (CUMFI) announced the grand opening of the Round Prairie Elders’ Lodge, a newly constructed 26-unit residence for Métis Elders located at 412 Avenue P South in Saskatoon. The 25,881 square foot Lodge will provide culturally appropriate housing that is safe, affordable, and accessible.

CUMFI will deliver the proper supports while ensuring Elders are housed with dignity and a quality of life to promote health and wellbeing. CUMFI has long known the struggles faced by many Métis Elders, and the Round Prairie Elders’ Lodge provides an opportunity to address challenges such as isolation, lack of cultural supports, and safety with its many shared spaces. An outdoor area hosts a fire pit, raised planters with traditional medicinal plants, and

gathering area.

The Métis Nation– Saskatchewan (MN–S) Ministry of Housing contributed $1.5 Million through the Regional Housing Strategy, with funding from the Canada-Métis Nation Housing Sub-Accord. The support went toward the land purchase and a deposit on modular units.

The funders in the crosscultural partnership include Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) through the Indigenous Homes Innovation Initiative (IHII) ($2,293,077), Métis Nation – Saskatchewan (MNS) ($1,500,000); the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) ($683,845 (Forgivable Loan); $1,609,386 (Repayable Loan), Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC) ($632,845) and the City of Saskatoon ($178,437).

Elders will be a valuable resource to the neighbourhood, with so many Métis

knowledge keepers under one roof. Lodge staff intend to open the attached gathering room to the community to host meals, cultural and social activities, and provide teaching opportunities.

CUMFI President Shirley Isbister said, “We are very excited to have the Round Prairie Elders Lodge opening in the Pleasant Hill Neighborhood. It’s been two decades in the making and our Elders finally have a place to call home.

“For years we have seen our Elders struggle and make decisions between rent and other essentials such as medicine or food. CUMFI is proud to help in this small way to overcome these issues and we will continue to work for our Elders and people. By working collaboratively with Métis Nation–Saskatchewan, Federal, Provincial and Municipal governments, this Lodge is now a reality.”

Take home drug test strips now available in Sask The Government of Saskatchewan is expanding access to fentanyl and benzodiazepine drug checking strips, to help curb the number of overdose deaths in our province. These test strips are now available to the general public for the purpose of at home drug checking.

Fentanyl is 50 to 100 times more toxic than other opioids, according to a release. Of 149 confirmed accidental drug toxicity deaths in Saskatchewan in 2021, 108 (72 per cent) involved fentanyl. People who use drugs often do not know if fentanyl is present. It cannot be seen,

smelled or tasted.

Mixing benzodiazepines (benzos) with opioids increases the risk of overdose, because they both have sedative properties. As well, naloxone, which normally reverses the effects of an opioid overdose, is not effective in counteracting benzos.

“The tragedy of overdose and toxic street drug deaths continue to be a heavy burden on our communities,” Mental Health and Addictions Minister Everett Hindley said. “Our government remains committed to expanding addictions services, and providing widespread access

to drug checking strips is one way to save lives.”

Take home test strips are now available at over 30 locations across the province. To find the closest location for pick-up, the public can visit saskatchewan.ca/overdose.

“We are grateful anytime we see the adoption of evidence based harm reduction measures on a large scale,” Provincial Lead of Mom’s Stop the Harm Canada Marie Agioritis said. “It gives me hope that someone else’s mother could be spared the pain of burying a child. These test strips will save lives. Let’s get them into the hands of

people who need them.”

“This is a major step to help reduce the risk of overdoses throughout Saskatchewan,” Prairie Harm Reduction Executive Director Jason Mercredi said. “Prairie Harm Reduction is pleased to be a partner with the Government of Saskatchewan to ensure this harm reduction tool is widely available to everyone in Saskatchewan, both urban and rural.”

A negative result on a test strip does not guarantee the substance is safe. Test strips only check if certain fentanyl or benzos compounds are present in the portion of the

drugs tested. They do not detect other drugs and do not show the amount of fentanyl or benzos present in the substance. These strips are an additional tool to limit potential overdoses.

The Ministry of Health asks all those using street drugs to not use alone. Use the buddy system or call the National Overdose Response Service at 1-888688-6677. Naloxone kits to reverse opioid overdoses are available throughout the province. Visit saskatchewan.ca/ opioids for more information.

In the event of an overdose, call 911. Under the Good

Samaritan Act, you will not be charged for possession of an illegal substance if you are calling for assistance during an overdose.

The Ministry of Health is investing a record $458 million for mental health and addictions services in 2021-22, an increase of $23.4 million over last year›s budget. Of that investment, $2.6 million is specifically for harm reduction initiatives across the province, an increase of $1.4 million from last year. Test strips for drug checking is one of several new harm reduction initiatives being funded this year.

Kamsack and area food hamper need greater than expected For the fifth year in a row SIGN Positive Impact will again give food hampers to those in need in Kamsack and surrounding communities.

However, approximately 125 hampers have now been spoken for, and no more applications can be accepted.

Last year Positive Impact distributed 114 hampers with the assistance of the Salvation Army in Yorkton.

Local businesses and individuals have donated nonperishable food items for the

hampers, and Positive Impact has purchased nourishing fresh food items such as produce, milk and proteins to be included to provide good and necessary meals for those who otherwise would not be able to enjoy the things many of us take for granted.

Financial donations were received to be able to do that.

As well, donations of socks, mittens and toques for the hampers were also requested.

For this project, Positive Impact has received a donation of $4,000 from

Sno Drifters raffle winner announced Justin Petelski, General Manager of Norquay Coop, presented a donation of $2,500 for the hampers to Candice Nelson of SIGN Positive Impact.

Yorkton Tribal Council, and SaskEnergy’s 2021-22 Share the Warmth grant of $1,000.

A donation was also received from the Grain Services Union Kamsack Local.

On Monday, November 15, the draw for a Sno Drifters raffle was broadcast live on Facebook from the home of club president, Tyson Leis.

A total of 604 tickets were sold and the winner of the Arctic Cat ZR 200 – a prize valued at $6,000, was Dot Davies.

One of the few real constants for farmers is change

LOOKING BACK...

A Decade Ago December of 2012 saw the Kamsack Comprehensive Institute junior drama club – consisting of students in grades 5 to 8, complete casting 34 actors in the roles for Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, a two-act production adapted by Tim Kelly. ******* Members of the Kamsack Community Choir celebrated the holiday season with a concert entitled The Birthday of a King. The group sang carols during the Moonlight Madness preChristmas shopping promotion following the Santa Claus parade in 2012. ******* One of the results of the 2012 flooding situation was the RM of Cote requesting the provincial government have a flood risk warning system in place. At its regular meeting, council carried a resolution saying that “it is evident that our area is prone to a greater chance of sudden and unexpected flooding due to controlled water practices within Saskatchewan and neighbouring provinces. ******* The Government of Saskatchewan increased the province’s minimum wage from $9.50 to $10 per hour, which also resulted in a corresponding increase to the minimum call-out pay to $30.

The increase was estimated to affect 22,000 minimum wage earners in Saskatchewan in 2012. ******* Santa Claus was the featured guest at the Santa Claus parade held at Kamsack in December of 2012 during the Moonlight Madness shopping promotion. The jolly elf from the North Pole attended the parade with two of his reindeer thanks to the help and support of Bonnie and Norm Mitchell of Fort Qu’Appelle, who joined Santa and the reindeer on foot for the parade.

One thing about choosing farming as a career is you will need to be adaptable to change, for change is the one constant of the agriculture sector.

The weather can change in a matter of hours, and a big change need not happen outside the front door to have a significant impact.

A major weather event in any of the grain growing regions with significant export sales can ripple throughout the market.

Stock market jumps and declines, war skirmishes, anything that hits the energy sector, the ups and downs of Canadian currency and various governmental issues on the international stage, can all change things on the farm rather dramatically.

At present, farmers have to be keeping a

rather close eye on the nitrogen fertilizer market.

There is a global shortage of nitrogen fertilizer and anytime there is a shortage, prices climb, in this case to record levels, which will certainly limit the impact of high grains and oilseed prices, given lower yields this fall due to drought conditions.

The high fertilizer prices have to be a real head scratcher for farmers coming out of a dry y e a r, a n d w h i l e p r i c e s have been high, a knowledge that high prices always come down.

The fall rains and early

snow hint at better moisture conditions, but it’s a long way until seeding and the impacts of much-talked of ‘climate change’ whether cyclical or long-term, are an unknown.

And prices are always a bit of a wild card, and in some cases production is already allocated to cover 2021 contracts, so what might be the returns in 2022 are perhaps harder to determine than most years.

So how great a risk do farmers wish to take in terms of spending on fertilizer?

Do you invest in the

usual fertilizer quantities which will mean added costs, in order to maximize production if the moisture comes?

Or, do you trim back inputs to lower costs with uncertain moisture conditions ahead?

And, of course there is the potential for current pressure on nitrogen fertilizer to tighten even more by spring, pushing prices even higher.

The uncertainty surrounding fertilizer is major since it is a primary element in production, and given production pressures at the farm level this past fall, you know farmers would like to make sure they have the foundation in place for top yields in 2022 to make up some of the shortfall, and to grab some prices which may decline but will likely still be better than is usual.

Looking after Christmas arrangements long-term A couple years ago, we received a beautiful Christmas arrangement containing a little cedar and a Christmas cactus. When we received this lovely planter, the cactus was merely in bud, but soon opened into glorious fans or fuchsia-red petals, and looked beautiful!

But now, how to care for it? Time for some research.

First, some interesting little factoids! The “Schlumbergera bridgesii” or Christmas Cactus might be called a cactus but it is not: it actually comes from the tropical rain forest. It is an epiphyte, like an orchid, drawing its moisture from the air. So the plant likes humid conditions, but it does not like its feet to be wet. I read that we should keep it “root-bound” in sandy soil, and water it only when it feels dry. When watering, add the water and let the excess run out before putting it back in its saucer or pot. (An extra note: we can keep it in a drip tray filled with small stones, but never let the water rise above the level of the stones. However, a little water below the level of the stones will give the plant some humidity, and it will like that!)

The Christmas cactus likes moderate, partial light. In the winter, when the sun is not as strong, we could put it in an east window, but in the summer, we have to be careful that it is not in direct hot sun so that it doesn’t get sunburn!

Another little factoid: the Christmas cactus is thermo-photoperiodic. That two-dollar word means

The Garden Grapevine that the temperature of the room where it is kept, and the amount of light that it gets there, will determine blooming. To encourage buds to form on our Christmas cactus, we should make sure that the temperature at night is between 50 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit (10-12.5 degrees Celsius). Also, our little plant will need 13 hours of uninterrupted darkness: and that means no light. I read that we should even cover the plant with a black garbage bag to ensure that it gets total darkness at night.

I also read that after the plant has finished blooming, we should give it a holiday. The plant will need several weeks of rest after it is done blooming, and we are told not to worry if it loses a few leaves and looks a little limp. We should put in in a cool room and give it limited water.

Problem areas? Giving the plant too much water, or

having it in a drafty location, will make the buds fall off. And it does not like to be moved. Yes, the plant requires a little extra care, but it is well worth the trouble because of the beautiful holiday show! And remember, this is a plant that can be very long-lived with the correct care! You will certainly add a note of holiday beauty to your home with the exotic Christmas cactus!

When the weather is cold and blustery, there is something very thrilling about having flowers in the house.

It is such a treat to see their delicate beauty when winter rages just outside the window! I remember one very cold, very stormy Christmas, and my sweet hubby Keith came in with beautiful little arrangements of roses for me, Mom and my sister. Each arrangement was small and perfect, each in a different beautiful color. Mine was with apricot sweetheart roses and it was one of the loveliest things to receive on that bitter winter day! As we set the table for our Christmas Eve meal, the flowers in the middle of the table brought a reminder of hope of the spring to come, and enhanced the wonder and miracle of that Christmas night.

So treat yourself or someone you love to flowers or a flowering plant this Christmas season: it will rejuvenate your spirit! The stores have lovely cut flowers and plants to choose from, so bring something special home and have a great week!

Atmospheric rivers are a growing environmental concern It’s a new term and not a comfortable one for those who have experienced or just viewed its unstoppable power. It proves how puny we humans really are.

I hate to break this to the unrepentant capitalists of modern industry but for most of you, your mode of making a living is obviously damaging the environment of this planet. Or at least rapidly changing the past environmental traditions that make this planet livable.

It is difficult to fault a person for trying to make a

living but when that person’s activities have such negative, far-reaching effects that it destroys the ability for fellow humans to make a living or even eat, reflection and conciseness should dictate that a modification or elimination of those destructive activities should be thoroughly investigated and probably initiated.

So it is in B.C. right now where atmospheric rivers of rain, never seen before, are destroying people’s lives, livelihoods, living accommodations, food supplies, livestock and habitat for all

natural life.

It is interesting that when tragedy strikes in the midst of the capitalist vision of rugged individualism, that caring for our fellow man becomes the kneejerk reaction. Tales increase of an outpouring of, financially uncompensated, good will from complete strangers voluntarily offering up personal time, resources, energy and even safety to help out and ease the burden where that assistance is obviously needed to alleviate human and animal suffering. Is this not a beautiful testament

to the foundations of human nature?

The goodness of humanity shines in the wake of environmental disaster, excepting the personal blame for creating such environmental convulsions we’re still working on.

I signalled out capitalism because in Canada we are a capitalist dominated country. China is a dictatorship and many dictatorships, monarchy’s, totalitarian regimes are equally guilty of being abusive to our shared environment. Often with fewer remedial abilities or

incentives to change than capitalism.

These atmospheric rivers of rain B.C. is experiencing are only one example of our manmade environmental collapse. The melting of our ice caps, mass extinctions, more pronounced droughts, increasingly ferocious wildfires are simply messengers warning us of our selfishness, of consumerism out of control and our rejection of environmental limits.

The children and youth that gathered at COP 26 and around the world who face

bleak futures of increasing, unanticipated, environmental reaction to human selfishness exercise more common sense than those trapped in the attractive activities of rampant consumerism.

Wallowing in and providing the resources and brain washing for that consumerism is destroying those children’s future ability to live on this planet. Humanity’s future really, because there is no guarantee humanity will survive this stupidity.

Letter from APAS to ministers Harpauer and Marit I am writing in response to the concerns raised by the government in the letter addressed to me on Dec.1, 2021. APAS has received a number of concerns from our membership about the linking of drought conditions, crop insurance payouts and the potential provincial deficit for the current year.

Many Saskatchewan producers are working through a difficult year, and they are concerned that they are being considered a burden on the province’s finances.

Although it may not have been the intention of the government to leave that perception, many media reports made that link. How Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation is accounted for is the government’s business.

However, pointing out that producers are not responsible for a deficit situation when previous year’s results are taken into account is our organization’s job.

Producers are concerned that the general public has a perception that farmers are

receiving a “break “or a “bailout” when they receive a crop insurance cheque. I have personally received these phone calls and comments, as has our office, our local elected APAS Representatives, and our general membership.

APAS and the farming community have worked hard to mend the rural-urban split that has existed in this province. Educating the urban and rural public on the accounting used to support an important program like crop insurance is essential.

Farmers shouldn’t have to defend using a program that is actuarially sound and built on a longstanding partnership between the federal and provincial governments and producers.

Unfortunately, misperceptions arise when large crop insurance claims and the deficit are linked.

There is a lack of understanding around the accounting principles used for crop insurance, which is the issue at hand. APAS is not taking the position that the

government does not support agriculture any more than the government is saying that farmers are the cause of the deficit.

These are important discussions that need to occur so that there are no public misconceptions.

I stand to be corrected on the operational side of the Finance Ministry and the use of summary financial statements. However, having these discussions without being accused of being deceitful, ignorant, or misinformed would

be appreciated. Our press release was intended to point out farmers’ position when it comes to one of the most important partnerships they have, which is crop insurance.

APAS values its relationship with the government and the Agriculture and Finance Ministries. We all have the best interests of agriculture in common. That was the intent of the press release and comments around it. There was no intention to offend anybody.

Tips to having a successful and happy marriage

By Stan Popovich Do you ever wonder what it takes to have a happy marriage?

Some people who are married are unhappy and many of us know either a friend or relative who is divorced.

As a result, here are six suggestions on how you and partner can have a great marriage.

1 . Ta l k w i t h y o u r spouse on a regular basis: Communication with one another will prevent any misunderstandings on certain issues. When a problem does come up, discuss your

feelings and opinions to the other person. Don’t assume that the other person knows how you feel.

In addition, learn to work with the other person. Being in a marriage is like being part of a team; each member must do his or her own part.

One person can’t do everything. Work with your spouse in maintaining your marriage and try to be flexible with the other person’s needs.

2. Do not assume anything when you are in a marriage: Small misunderstandings can become bigger problems in the future. If something is not going right,

then talk to the other person right away. Do not wait for a problem to become a major issue in your marriage.

3. See things from your partner’s point of view: Try to see things from the other person’s perspective. This will help you to see where the other person is coming from which will increase your understanding of the situation. Don’t think that you are the one who has all the answers.

4. Develop a plan to manage your money: It can be challenging when one person wants to save their money while the other person

wants to spend it. This can cause a lot of stress and anxiety in your marriage. As a result, you and your partner should develop a budget to manage your expenses. A budget will help you to pay your bills on time without running out of money. A budget will help prevent you from using your money on things that you do not need.

Also, learn to manage your spending. The more you purchase things that you do not need, the less money you will have for the future.

There is nothing wrong with buying things that make you happy, but you do not want to

spend money that you do not have. The key is to learn to manage your money wisely.

5. Be a good listener: Listen to what your partner has to say when he or she talks about their problems.

Do not judge the other person. Understanding only comes from being a great listener and this will greatly reduce your marriage issues. It is also important to ask questions in order to get a good idea of where your partner is coming from.

6. Seek the services of a marriage counselor: There is nothing wrong with seeking help. Maintaining a

marriage can be challenging so it is important to get additional advice from an experienced professional. Many people who seek the services of a marriage counselor can learn effective ways on maintaining a happier marriage.

Delta variant is affecting all of us

By Kaare Askildt Covid Delta variant is the latest virus ravaging North America and the rest of the world. Marion and I continue to wear our masks even though we both have the two shots. There are some people that do not believe in wearing a mask or getting vaccinated, and as far as we’re concerned, that’s their choice and we respect that.

there is no need for people against masks and/or vaccines to stage public protests invading schools or hinder access to hospitals. Fortunately, Marion was able to deal with her cancer before the real onslaught of the virus. However, her immune system has been compromised and I have my own ticker problems, so we are very concerned with respect to the spread of this new strain called Delta, a deadly virus.

I guess that for simplicity and having named the initial virus Alpha, they named the new and fourth strain Delta after the fourth letter (science symbol Δ, δ) of the Greek alphabet. I have noticed on the news that there is a worldwide concern with respect to dealing with this pandemic.

Hospitals are overflowing with patients, and medical personnel are overworked and stressed to the max, leaving

patients suffering from other maladies to look after themselves. Some anti mask and vaccine people are the first to cry foul when the virus hits them, and that should be a sign for their followers to change their attitude. But enough doom and gloom, let us endeavour to stay healthy and enjoy life.

Kamsack Wildlife Federation hosts annual antler measuring The Kamsack Wildlife Federation (KWF) a chapter of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation (SWF) held its annual Antler Measuring Night on Friday, December 3 at the Veregin Area.

KWF club president, Tyson Leis, took on the task of processing new annual memberships which he said has become typical for the event where members unite after hunting season has passed. “I’ve been doing this since the 80s,” offered Floyd. “I just learned from those who did it before me. We’ve been coming out to these things for many years and we still enjoy it.”

Picking up on some lessons and insight from the seasoned official were Kamsack branch measurers, Devan Petruk and Lorne Leis. While Hendrickson examined the moose and elk racks, Petruk and Leis got to work measuring the mule deer and white-tailed deer horns.

The KWF hopes to renew the tradition of hosting an awards banquet in the new year to celebrate the achievements of its members. A date has yet to be determined and will be dependent on current pandemic regulations.

After cancelling the event in 2020 due to COVID regulations, Kamsack Branch Measurer, Lorne Leis, was excited to be able to see the members unite for the annual measuring event, held this year at the Veregin Arena.

Duck Mountain Super League curling back in action

By Doug Elsasser The Duck Mountain Super League (DMSL), featuring mens curling teams from Kamack, Swan River, Benito, Canora, Norquay and Madge Lake, resumed play at the Broda Sportsplex in Kamsack November 23.

According to its exe c u t i v e d i r e c t o r, To m Jordens, “The League was inactive last season due to

COVID-19 restrictions, but we are back this year with a field of seven teams.”

The opening draw in Kamsack November 23 saw Rick Kinaschuk of Benito sponsored by W.F. Schneider and Son, defeat Tyson Leis of Kamsack sponsored by Pattison Agriculture. Swan River’s Kelly Tibble took down Bob Kolodziejski of Canora, and

defending champion Ken Newell of Norquay, sponsored by Challoner Farms, edged Don Bowes of Madge Lake. Fred Perepiolkin and his Kamsack team had the night off.

Until last year’s layoff, the Duck Mountain Super League, in its modern era, had showcased competitive men’s curling for five consecutive seasons. This

traveling bonspiel raises money through sponsorships and entry fees, then awards cash prizes to winning teams during the round robin competition. More cash is paid out after the playoffs.

In the League’s second draw on November 30, also played in Kamsack, Perepiolkin, sponsored

by Nykolaishen Farms, defeated the Newell team

from Norquay. Tyson Leis picked up his first win over Canora’s Bob Kolodziejski who is sponsored by Pioneer Hybrid. And Brent Scales, who alternates skipping duties with Kelly Tibble of Swan River, out-scored Don Bowes of Madge Lake.

DMSL action shifts to Canora December 7 and 14. The curlers will be in Norquay December 21 and

28. Benito will host the Super League January 4, 2022. All games start at 7:30 pm and are open to the public free of charge.

Playoffs are set for January 11, 2021 at the Broda Sportsplex in Kamsack when semi-finals and finals on the A-Side will determine the 20212022 Duck Mountain Super League champions.

Lampman author releases women’s hockey book

By Anastasiia Bykhovskaia SaskToday E S T E VA N - W i t h the release of Shootout, Lampman’s Maureen Ulrich has completed her Jessie Mac hockey series. The fourth book takes a new approach to the plot, still bringing the readers back into the filled-with adventures world of long-loved characters and hockey.

The latest and the last book in the Jessie Mac hockey series took a long t i m e , b u t n o w, a l l t h a t work is completed, Ulrich said she is happy with how everything went. She first thought about writing about university hockey about nine years ago, and that’s when she created the first few chapters. But then until recently, not much was happening with the book.

“Since 2014, I wanted to write a book that incorporated a storyline about university athletics … I did start a manuscript at some

point, I wrote a couple of chapters, and just kind of got bogged down and couldn’t seem to find my way through,” recalled Ulrich. “Then once I got into revising the first three books in the series, and I knew I wanted to write a fourth to finish this off, it gave me a chance to think about potential storylines … It feels like I started over. I learned a lot by revising the first three books of the series, which I relaunched in 2020. And I’ve hopefully applied what I’ve learned to book four.”

Ulrich didn’t use a lot from the original novels, written nine years ago, and it took her about six months to craft Shootout. One of the things that made writing this book easier was the pandemic, which put most things on pause and made the writing process so more valuable and enjoyable.

“It was a little bit of a dream, to be able to go

I mean, some of the girls were allowed to practise last year if they were under 18. But other than that, there was no university athletics across Canada. And I had the time and the space, and then the desire to reflect, and the desire to manifest that story and do it justice,” Ulrich said.

The brand-new book continues with the story of the main character Jessie McIntyre, who shares the stage with her younger sister Courtney.

“This book, Shootout, is told from two viewpoints.

So there’s Courtney, who’s 14, who has the odd (numbered) chapters, and then Jesse, who is 19, has the even chapters,” explained Ulrich.

In Shootout, Courtney McIntyre navigates Grade 9 at the Estevan Comprehensive School while playing boys hockey for the first time. And her sister Jessie is in her second year with the University of Saskatchewan (U of S) Huskies, discovering the hard way what it takes to be an elite player in an elite league. Shootout revisits the Huskies’ 2013-14 season.

Four fictional characters in Shootout, including Jessie and Courtney, are inserted into the Huskies’ saga, surrounded by reallife players and coaches.

“And the 2013-14 team, which my daughter helped coach, she was a defensive coach with the women’s team, won the Canada West Championship, their very first ever in the program’s history. And those girls were such fantastic girls and role models. And I thought it would be great to

tell their story …. I wanted the former players who are now young women, nurses, accountants, a lot of them are mothers, they moved on in their lives, and I want them to look back on that experience that they had in 2013-14. And I want them to be really proud and to feel that I’ve done justice to their story.”

On October 15, Ulrich held a Shootout Zoom launch, hosted by publisher Wood Dragon Books with support from The Writers Union of Canada and Canada Council for the Arts.

“People are encouraged to register in advance for those. Just because if we end up having to go online, it’s nice to get ahold of whoever had planned to come and let them know that there’ll be a change,” Ulrich said.

Churchbridge hunter fined $3,000 for illegal hunting A Churchbridge-area resident was recently fined $3,000 in Yorkton Provincial Court after pleading guilty to multiple wildlife offences, including hunting without landowner permission.

On February 25, 2021, Ministry of Environment conservation officers received a call through the Tu r n I n P o a c h e r s a n d Polluters (TIPP) line from a concerned citizen who observed two individuals retrieving a dead moose, north of Bredenbury, stated a release. Upon arriving at the scene, conservation officers concluded the hunters had shot the moose on fenced, private farmland and then cut pieces off the animal, leaving edible parts of the

moose in the field to waste.

From information and evidence collected at the scene, officers executed a search warrant, seizing the illegally obtained moose meat from the vehicle used in the offence.

John Mair, 57, of Churchbridge was charged for unlawfully hunting on private land without landowner permission; possessing wildlife taken in contravention of legislation; and for leaving edible game in the field.

The second individual involved in the incident was a minor. Conservation officers and the Crown determined that no charges were warranted.

of the three offences and was ordered to pay a fine of $3,000. Mair was also handed a one-year hunting licence suspension. The Crown withdrew a third charge as part of this plea

agreement.

Conservation officers credit the successful resolution of this case to the person who reported the offence to the TIPP line.

Volleyball team comes up just short at provincials The Sturgis and Norquay combined senior boys volleyball team had a winning season that qualified them to attend provincials after winning conference and regional playoffs, both held in Sturgis. The team finished in fourth place, out of the medal standing at provincials on November 26 and 27.

“The team, made up of eight Sturgis boys and four Norquay boys, had a great year,” said Kipp Bayer, coach. “After the uncertainty of last year, we were very happy to run pretty much a full season with just one tournament cancellation. The boys played very well all year and we had great support

from our communities and families. I was very happy with how we performed.

We attended the following tournaments and provincial playoffs.,” stated Bayer.

During the season the team attended tournaments in Kinistino, Carnduff and Sturgis where they placed first in all three tournaments. They placed third i n t h e Yo r k t o n S a c r e d Heart tournament and second in Melville.

Sturgis hosted both conferences and regionals where they finished in first place which earned the team the privilege to conclude their season at provincials held at St. Walburg and Turtleford.

OSTAPOWICH: William John Ostapowich November 21, 2021. It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Willie Ostapowich. Willie was born September 11, 1937 to Wasyl and Jennie Ostapowich on their farm outside of Veregin, Saskatchewan. He worked with his family, older sister Rose, big brother Steve and little Nellie - who passed away as a baby. While living on the eastern part of Saskatchewan, he met Barbara Finnie and they married in Kamsack in 1960. Will worked with the Highways Department and they raised three children - Michele, Tracy and Darrin. They lived in cities across Saskatchewan Saskatoon, Swift Current, Yorkton, Rosetown and Kamsack; dancing, camping, bowling, cards, socializing and enjoying their family, friends and community until Barb passed away in 1993.

In late 2000, Will reconnected with Carol Frerichs and their friendship quickly turned into a romance. In July 2001, the pair married and Will’s family grew to include Carol’s relatives. For 20 years, Will and Carol danced, travelled, crafted, curled and cross country skied. Will loved outdoors, fishing, bonfires and even jumped out of an airplane in his seventies. Will was a lovable, caring, sensitive man. He was also quite the character!

He loved to play the prankster whenever he could - always smiling and planning the next “event”. Will was always around to help, whether it was flipping pancakes for the church, making posters for the bowling league or helping his wife with community volunteer work… he was always happy to help! Willie will be missed and remembered by his family - daughters Michele and Ted, Tracy and Randy and son Darrin; his grandchildren and their families Kailyn, Adam, Cameron and Benson; Kimberly, Jay and Trance; Leta, Joey and Corinna; Jenny, Jamie, Dustyn and Cyerra; Teega, Michael, Jayden and Jerome and Tamika, Chris and Benjamin and Taylor. He welcomed extended family as Steeven, Kyle and Kali, Jorden (Jordyn according to Grandpa) with Chris and Bowie joined when Michele brought them into his life. All family was profoundly important to Will. Nieces and nephews were always welcome to his home. He was predeceased by his nieces Bernice, but held a strong relationship with her family, as well as Jenny, Brenda, Tammy, Bruce, Diedrie, Stacey, Lorilee and Jamie. Then that big old heart of Will’s was welcomed by Carol’s children and their families Norma and Kevin, Dennis and Jen, Karen and Ian and Steve and Tammie. Will found great comfort, support and love from the people who surrounded him and he gave the love, support and comfort right back. We are all better because we had him in our world. A Celebration of Will’s Life was held on Saturday, December 4, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at the Rosetown United Church with Reverend Allan Gairns officiating. Sask Education Act amended to ensure safe access to schools The Government of Saskatchewan is introducing legislation to protect teachers, staff and students while accessing schools. This will ensure families can access schools harassment free while vaccines are rolled out for kids 5 to 11.

“Similar to the protections provided for patients, staff and families accessing our hospitals it is important that our children, parents, teachers and staff are able to access schools in the province without fear of interference or intimidation,” Education Minister Dustin Duncan said.

“In particular it is important to ensure our children do not feel scared or threatened.”

A 50-metre safe access zone will prevent sidewalk protests or interference near schools that could potentially cause obstructions, delays or harassment for people entering and leaving school properties. There is also regulation-making authority to extend zones up to 150-metre zones.

Lawful labour picketing will still be allowed within the safe access zones. Like hospital safe access zones, the safe zone provisions for schools will also automatically expire two years from the coming into force dates.

Prince Albert bullfighter in the PBR

By Calvin Daniels YORKTON - When it comes to bull riding there are three key elements to the sport.

The first obviously is the rider.

The second is the bull, which is integral to the sport.

And, finally there are the bullfighters, who protect the rider from the typically unhappy bull when that rider hits the arena dirt, which he always does, whether making a high scoring ride or being tossed in two seconds.

Prince Albert’s Jesse Byrne is one of the bullfighters at the high level of the sporting, protecting riders in the PBR (Professional Bull Riders).

Byrne actually started out competing as a rider, but it was never exactly a comfortable place he wanted to be.

“I started out riding. I did all the junior steer stuff. When I was 13, 14, 15 I moved into the high school bull riding division,” he said in a recent

telephone interview. “I had some success. It didn’t go too bad, but it wasn’t for me.”

Byrne said there were simply bulls he wasn’t all that interested in riding.

But, he still wanted to be involved, and at age 16 he changed course in terms of bull riding.

“That’s the point where I was able to take on bullfighting,” he said, adding it was then he received his Dad’s blessing.

So if there were bulls he didn’t exactly want to ride, how was being in front of every bull as a ‘fighter’ better?

“The difference for me was the feeling of being on my own two feet rather than being tied to them,” said Byrne with a chuckle.

The change of course was actually following his father, which is where he said he came to want to fight bulls.

“It was watching Dad do his thing all those years,” he said, adding he was just happy “I had a chance of

following in his footsteps.”

And once he started fighting bulls, Byrne was hooked.

“Once I did it, it was everything I thought it would be,” he said.

So what does it take to be part of a team of three bullfighters protecting 40 to 60 riders a show in the PBR? “You’ve got to be able to

keep your focus,” said Byrne, and that includes being ready minutes after maybe being tossed by a bull. “You’ve just got to refocus,” he said, noting there is no taking off a shift or two because you are hurting.

“Bumps and bruises are always there ... But the mental side, you’ve to have focus on what is in front of you.”

While most of Byrne’s work with the PBR has him working stateside he was back in Canada, in fact back home in Prince Albert earlier this year, plying his trade as a bullfighter alongside his brother Tanner, a former PBR rider more recently turned to fighting.

PBR Canada began its 2021 season June 11 and 12, launching the new season with the Tanner Byrne I n v i t a t i o n a l , i n PA o n Tanner’s, utilizing his own property and bull riding arena.

Jesse said it was a great family event.

“It was super exiting,” he said, adding it came after “kind of a long wait for things to get going again (due to COVID-19 restrictions).

“It was sort of a family reunion at the same time. That was just awesome. It was back to our roots, where it all started.”

As for Tanner now fighting bulls, Jesse said it was almost inevitable.

“He’s always loved bullfighting as much as I do,” he said.

So, how about the sport overall?

It continues to grow with big crowds watching what seems to be even better riders and even better bulls.

Among the riders Brazil’s Jose Vitor Leme is number one in the world, and the reigning world champion.

“It’s safe to say he’s one of the best ever,” said Byrne, adding it’s likely he will break every record before he’s through, and he is only 25.

“There’s no doubt in my

mind every time the gate opens, the bull’s the underdog (with Leme). He’s got the will and determination. It’s there every time.”

The top bull right now is Woopaa from Barker Bulls and Hookin’ W Ranch.

Byrne notes the bulls are every bit the athletic equal to the riders in the sport.

“There’s lot of fans at PBR events because of the bulls ... The athleticism at that size you won’t see anywhere else,” he said.

Recently, Leme drew Woopaa at the PBR 15/15 Bucking Battle in Tulsa, and the tandem did not disappoint.

Leme made the eight second whistle and the judges awarded the ride a score of 97.75 the best ever in the PBR. It was a ride for the ages, but fate proved cruel to Byrne who did not work the event.

“I kind of felt it was coming,” said Byrne, adding Woopaa is a dynamic bucking bull, and Leme is simply at the top of his game.

Petter Hansen and his family had just moved into a middle-class neighbourhood in a small Norwegian town. Whenever Petter’s son Morten was asked who he was, he always gave the same answer, “I’m the son of the preacher!”

One day after having overheard Morten’s answer, his mother Gunhild took him aside.

“That’s the wrong answer,” said his mother, “you should answer that you are Morten Hansen.”
