The happily ever after love story of a Kamsack couple They met at what could be considered one of the most luxurious hotels in the world in the late 1950s. The Dorchester Hotel in London was the backdrop for a birthday party of a mutual friend turning 21. It was there that student nurse, Sally, eyed medical student, Mike. It didn’t matter much that Mike had arrived to the party with Sally’s best friend, because according to Sally, the attraction between the two young adults was both immediate and undeniable. In 1962, the couple was married in London, England. Both were students at the University of London. While
Sally trained for a career as a state registered nurse at London’s Guy’s Hospital, Mike pursued his doctoral residency nearby at the prestigious St. Bartholomew’s Hospital. Mike and Sally would soon welcome their first child, a daughter, and the young couple began to imagine where in the world they might put down roots for their growing family. “In those years, Mike took on rotating internships in obstetrics, anesthetics, and emergency medicine. He wanted his training to be diversified so he could offer a variety of qualifications,” Sally explained on a phone
interview with the Kamsack Times. It wasn’t long before Mike was sifting through job offers from across Canada and the United States. But it seemed fate was sealed when he and Sally spoke to a pair of English doctors who had established a practice in Kamsack. “They were very nice,” said Sally. “They spoke so highly of this beautiful little community in Saskatchewan. We arrived in Kamsack in January of 1965 and it was extremely cold. Our first daughter, Claire, was two years old and I remember I was pregnant with our second child, David, at
the time.” The 27-year-old Dr. Mike Bishop would get to work straight away, serving the town of Kamsack as a family medical doctor. With Mike being on call every third week, he relied on Sally to manage the household and children. A third child, daughter Nicola, would round out the young Kamsack family. Dr. Bishop would devote his medical practice to Kamsack, becoming a longstanding and beloved doctor in the community. Sally Bishop would become a formidable family matriarch and active community Continued on Page 2
