Cutting the ribbon

River Valley Archery Club holds two-day 3D shoot in Veregin Competing with a realtime hunting season, now in full swing, the River Valley Archery Club (RVAC) hosted a two-day 3D shoot event in the Veregin Rink on November 17 and 18.

“Timing is always a factor when planning any event, but even though we knew we were competing with the area hunting season, we went ahead with our shoot,” said Scott Green, club president.

“It was a lot of fun, and even though we hoped for a few more participants, those who participated had a great time,” he said.

Setup for the shoot took three days prior to the event for strategic placement of the

targets.

“Setup takes time, because it’s important to position targets to achieve proper shooting angles,” Green said.

Professional archer Clint Leis of Yorkton participated in the event and put in some practice time.

“Clint has a good number of sponsors and has been involved in archery for a long time. He complimented our club on the setup at the rink,” Green said.

“We will try and hold another shoot in March at the Veregin rink. We plan to open up for members to shoot on some weekends if it is warm enough. We will be leaving our targets set up as is for

now.

“The club had a good meeting and a good time during the weekend shoot, and it was nice to have four Canora residents come out.

Sophia Hvidston and her sister Emilie of Canora came to target practice. Sophia used the bow from her school where she participates in NASP (National Archery in the Schools Program), and Emilie used a club youth bow. Their grandmother, Betty Dubasoff of Kamsack was there to watch them shoot. “The setup at the Veregin rink was great and the girls really enjoyed themselves,” she said.

Annual Dinner Theatre in preparation The Kamsack Players Drama Club has been hard at work with preparations for its annual dinner theatre which will be staged on December 14 and 15 in the OCC Hall.

According to a press release from the play’s director, Jack Koreluik, the group, which has been rehearsing since mid-September, will stage a two-act

comedy by Paul Elliott called Exit Laughing.

The play centres on the lives of four middle-aged women whose biggest highlight for the last 30 years has been a weekly bridge night out with the “girls.” When one of the foursome inconveniently dies, one of the women is compelled to “borrow” her ashes from the funeral

home for one last card game, and the wildest, most exciting night of their lives. They learn a whole new way of looking at all the fun you can have when you’re truly living.

This year’s patrons will be treated to a prime rib dinner prepared by Full Throttle Catering. Shelley Filipchuk is co-ordinating

the dinner aspect of the event which requires a number of volunteers in various capacities to make the event happen.

“We’ve decided to raise the ticket price a bit this year but that increase was put directly into the meal,” Koreluik said. “We thought patrons would appreciate a more expensive meal than usual and hope that the

increase in cost will not affect the attendance.”

Advance tickets are a v a i l a b l e a t P h o e b e ’s Beauty Parlor until December 10. To ensure that the caterer has enough notice to order supplies and that the appropriate help is put into place, the group will not be able to accommodate anyone past the December 10 deadline.

Kamsack Volunteer Fire Department has a new fire chief The position of fire chief was left vacant in August when Cody Langlois resigned from the Kamsack Volunteer Fire Department (KVFD) to pursue other opportunities.

On November 4, the man who was filling the position as acting fire chief, took over the position. Ken Thompson, who has been a member of the KVFD since 1993, began duties as fire chief and EMO (Emergency Management Organization) coordinator.

Thompson has also been the area coroner for five years and has been with DMAC (Duck Mountain Ambulance Care) as an EMT (emergency medical technician) for over 20 years.

The new fire chief position is part-time at 20 hours per week.

In the past Thompson has been a volunteer with Forest and Fire for the Department of Natural Resources. His goal is to make sure all firefighters are well-trained and aware of safety protocols.

“I am passionate about stressing the safety aspect of the job for the firefighters, as I have a lot of background experience in that area,” he said. “I look forward to working with the fire district, town and volunteers.

“In this line of work, training is ongoing, and I attend conferences to keep up with the industry.”

Thompson is a fire service instructor and inspector and a fire scene examiner.

“I enjoy when the children come out to the fire hall for tours. It’s good to teach them about fire safety, and fun to see their excitement when they see the fire trucks,” he said.

He also enjoys the company of his dachshund, 13-year old Sammy.

The KVFD is always looking for new volunteers, and if anyone is interested in joining, or for more information, contact the town office or Thompson.

Let’s raise bullying awareness What is bullying?

Bullying is when someone hurts or scares another person, often repeatedly.

The behaviour is never appropriate and is intentional, said a release from S h a n n o n B r o d a - Va n i n , assistant coordinator of

the Kamsack branch of Parkland Victims Services.

The victims being bullied feel alone, depressed, scared and they feel that they have nowhere to turn.

Bullying includes calling someone hurtful or bad names, spreading lies

and bad rumours about someone, hitting, punching, shoving, spitting and physically hurting someone to name a few.

Some people feel that bullying is a normal rite of passage in growing up. It isn’t. There will always be

conflicts, but bullying is intentional and it can seriously harm the victim for the rest of their lives.

Some people say that kids who are bullied need to toughen up, that’s not true, said the release. It would happen no matter how

Kamsack Dental holds official opening Kamsack continues to be a leading edge community with the opening of a new dental clinic in the same building as the town’s existing medical clinic.

A grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on November 21 at Kamsack Dental located in the Assiniboine Valley Medical Center.

Dr. Michael Mah, dentist and president, is the visionary and driving force behind the new facility.

“We are really happy to have a team here that is very passionate about our vision,” he said in remarks to the crowd attending the event. “We are grateful for the members of the Kamsack community who have aligned this vision with us. The members of the Assiniboine Valley Wellness Foundation, members of town council, the mayor and townspeople have been very supportive, and we appreciate all the love and support shown to us. “ We w a n t t o g r o w and continue to provide Kamsack and the surrounding communities with services they deserve. Thank you everyone for coming out today to celebrate with us. Take a tour of our facility and make sure you help yourself to some food,” he said.

Nancy Brunt, Kamsack’s mayor, cut the ribbon and extended greetings and congratulations on behalf of the town.

“On behalf of the Assiniboine Valley Health and Wellness foundation, we would like to welcome Kamsack Dental to the community,” said Reg Brewer, chair of the Foundation. “We look forward to having a long working relationship.”

Chief George Cote of Cote First Nation welcomed Kamsack Dental to the community on behalf of Cote First Nation.

“Congratulations for bringing a service needed in our area,” he said.

“This new clinic is a nice facility and a great addition to our community,” said Jason Pennell, a town councillor and council’s representative on the Foundation, as he congratulated the new dental clinic staff.

Staff members provided tours of the “family-oriented” clinic which includes “well-designed dental treatment rooms” and features a play area for children to keep them entertained.

Kamsack Dental is the culmination of optimism on the part of the Assiniboine Valley Health and Wellness Foundation, an organizational committee that was formed back in 2009, which laid out a “blueprint of what to do.”

Hard work, planning and fundraising resulted in the opening of the Assiniboine Valley Medical Center in 2015 and Rod Gardner, Kamsack’s mayor at that time, expressed optimism that a dentist and optometrist would soon join the staff of the Center in the additional space reserved in the building, according to information found in a past issue of the Kamsack Times.

Ron Zarchikoff and his son, Jeff Zarchikoff, were

at the grand opening to congratulate the newest tenants in the building.

Zarchikoff Construction was the primary contractor when the original Center was built, and was the general contractor for the new dental clinic.

The team at the clinic include Mah, Dr. Bardia Ghassemi and Dr. Terry Mah, all general dentists.

Ghassemi is of Alberta, but was raised in Vancouver.

Mah explained that the

staff at the new clinic are able to direct-bill insurance for services, and are planning to offer orthodontic services provided by general dentists in the future.

“We are happy to bring a family and community oriented dental practice to Kamsack,” he said.

Don Hrycenko and Kevin Chutskoff presented the cheque for $1,000 to Herb Harper and Nelson Skomorowski. ***** Members of the Kamsack Order of the Royal Purple (OORP) donated their piano from the Elks Hall in Kamsack, which had been purchased from Henry Leis in the 1950s, to Eaglestone Lodge. A donation plaque was presented by Leonilla Fisher, OORP treasurer and pianist, to Phyllis McKave, activity worker at the Lodge. ***** Elder Antoine (Tony) Cote of Regina, a veteran and former chief of Cote First Nation, was one of eight persons to be invested with the Order of Merit by Lieut.-Gov. Trespassing law needs reasonable update “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.”

O n e d o e s n ’t h a v e t o be especially religious to consider this passage from the Lord’s Prayer to be pretty good advice.

N o w, i t ’s e s p e c i a l l y good advice for lawmakers who are trying to navigate the difficult notions surrounding a landowner’s right to keep people from tramping on their land.

In preparation for legislation expected at any time, the Saskatchewan government unveiled its survey results on what people would like to see in a new Trespass to Property Act. This is largely a rural Saskatchewan issue and not all city people are aware of what’s going on and, arguably more importantly, the consequences of what’s going on.

Besides the obvious

damage to crops and endangerment of livestock, certain crops are vulnerable to disease that can simply be transported by people tramping through fields.

There is a long-standing problem of hunters damaging livestock and being a threat to safety.

And damage to the land and property done by quads, snowmobiles and other vehicles has always been a thing. While some of this is clearly unintentional, some of it is a result of those who have always been careless and disrespectful. This, combined with newer hunters and trekkers, and we seem to have issues.

Moreover, landowners are vulnerable to lawsuits for damage people might cause themselves while being where they really should not be in the first place.

For all these reasons, it makes sense for the government to review “existing legislation to better address the appropriate balance between rural landowners and members of the public.”

The government stressed that First Nations hunting and fishing rights, that are set out in the treaties and guaranteed by the Constitution, s h o u l d n o t b e e ff e c t e d because such rights “neither create rights of access to privately owned land nor take those rights away.”

government seems to be looking at in the new act is meaningful changes to reverse the onus on trespassing.

One suggestion seems to involve no longer having to post land with “no trespassing” signs at specific distances. Hunters and others wishing access to land would need to contact the owners rather working under any assumptions that they are welcomed simply because there is no signage suggesting they are not.

complicated.

Getting permission to be on someone’s land is becoming increasingly complicated because of privacy laws and the fact that more land is owned by owners who might not be farming or living in the immediate area.

Elsewhere in the world, we are seeing what is called “right to roam” laws where the exact opposite is happening. In many European countries, trekkers on foot are gaining increased access to private land simply for the pleasure of enjoying the outdoors. Perhaps such laws are less necess a r y in a g i a n t c o u n tr y like Canada, but it does seem to be something that makes the world more neighbourly.

And then there are serious questions about whether more regulation on who can come onto

your land will do much for rural crime.

By the same argument that tougher gun laws only hurt the law abiding, tougher trespassing laws may affect ordinary people rather than those with criminal intent.

In fact, it is legitimate to worry, as the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations is now worrying, that people on their land without permission are up to no good.

Given the tensions we have sometimes seen between First Nations and non-First Nations people, especially in light of the Colten Boushie verdict, this could create potentially explosive situations.

Education is needed, but so is reason.

Maybe we all need to take a breath and remember the prayer most of us were taught.

Letters to the Editor

My mission in South America

By Fred Grieg (NCM) (Fred Greig is the chair of the Manitoba Wheat and Barley Growers Association, and owner and operator of Avondale seeds in Reston, Manitoba) South America is a long way from my farm near Reston, Manitoba.

I left home on November 11 as the farmer representative on the South American leg of the 2018 Canadian wheat new crop missions.

Between November and December, new crop mission seminars will take place in 17 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North and South America.

I’m part of a team made up of members of the Canadian value chain: Cereals Canada, Canadian International Grains Institute (Cigi), Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) and an exporter. I returned home to Manitoba on November 24 after meeting with customers in Mexico, Ecuador, Colombia, Peru and Chile, plus our first stop in Mississauga to meet with Canadian millers.

When I finished seeding in the spring, I could not have anticipated that a few months later I’d be standing in front of customers in these key markets, talking to them in a personal way

about my experiences farming in Canada, showing them pictures of my farm and a map that pinpoints where I’m located in southwestern Manitoba. I am able to talk about my farm as an independent business where decisions are driven by market forces and not governments.

You would be surprised at how many customers think that the government can tell me to grow more wheat.

As farmers, what we do matters to customers, whether it’s how we make cropping decisions, application of pesticides, our sustainable farming practices or how we deal with challenging conditions

like an early snowfall at harvest time. I talk about the best management practices I use to maximize my farms’ profit and minimize problems like fusarium. I review the sophisticated storage on my farm and outline what I do to minimize storage issues like Ochratoxin A or insect infestation.

I speak about these topics and more during each new crop seminar. The farmer is the first to present, followed by the exporter discussing Canadian wheat and durum production, supply and disposition. Next up is the CGC with its crop quality report and finally Cigi discussing the

milling, baking, noodle and pasta making quality of the 2018 crop.

When all is said and done about three-and-a-half hours later, customers in each market have received a complete and honest picture of this year’s wheat crop, with time provided for questions and answers. This approach is unique to Canada and one that demonstrates our collective commitment to providing the information and technical support customers require to optimize the value and performance of Canadian wheat.

The Canadian team is equally committed to bringing back what it hears from

customers during these missions to ensure that the value chain has a good understanding of customer needs. This knowledge can shape areas like research and innovation, both of which are essential to maintaining Canada’s brand as a supplier of clean, consistent, quality wheat.

It is a great privilege to represent Canadian farmers to our customers and it has been eye opening for me to discover how much our customers want to know about what we do on our farms. I am glad to be back and look forward to sharing what I’ve learned from these customer interactions with my peers.

Surely, this is a mistake, I thought. Maybe it’s just one episode. Nope. It was a marathon.

I am completely and utterly disgusted with History Canada, what was once known as The History Channel.

In the week leading up to the 100th anniversary of the Armistice ending the Great War, the First World War, they had next to no actual history.

Most of the week saw a few episodes of Hunting Hitler and Hunting Nazi Treasure. The rest of the time was filled with reality shows like Yukon Gold, Ice Road Truckers, Counting Cars, Mountain Men and American Pickers.

On November 10, they had seven hours of the reality series Forged in Fire, from 2 p.m. until midnight. They

played Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves at 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. And two hours of the morning, 8 a.m. and 9 a.m., had another reality series, Ice Road Truckers.

On November 11, Remembrance Day, they actually had some things dedicated to the Great War. That is, if you consider seven hours of War Junk, related.

From 5 a.m. to 8 a.m., you could watch War Story, an actual historical show, but little of that was during the time when people are actually awake. At 1 p.m., they aired Dieppe Uncovered, and a repeat of a War Story episode, also on Dieppe. The afternoon saw Black Watch Snipers at 4 p.m., Searching for Vimy’s Lost Soldiers at 5:30 p.m., more War Junk at 7 p.m., then two hours of 100 Days to Victory.

So one day, Remembrance Day, had some historical coverage, but not much at all about the 100th anniversary of the Armistice. It should have been wall-to-wall.

In their show listing, History has a Car Week, but no longer have A Week of Remembrance. Why they can’t rebroadcast something out of their library is beyond me.

I used to love History.

There were decades worth of documentaries on it. It was thought provoking, knowledgeable, and interesting. I learned things from it, almost every time I turned it on. But not anymore.

This is how their website’s “About” page describes the channel: “History explores stories of human endeavour, achievement and progress through award-winning series and specials. History is not the

story of then, it’s now. And it’s not the story of them, it’s us. History is made every day, everywhere.”

Well, what do ya know?

History isn’t history, folks. It’s now. I should feel so much better, now that I’ve read that.

But I don’t.

When I look at the dozens of channels on TV that I am paying some ungodly amount for each month (out of the hundreds available), I would like to have at least a couple that offer something of quality, each and every time I turn it on. When I turn on Discovery, I would like to see real science, but rarely is that the case anymore. When I turn on History, I want to see actual history. I don’t watch

Animal Planet, but I presume they still have animals.

History, you have become a mockery to your name. A fraud. A pathetic excuse for a television network if there ever was one. Change your name to something else, maybe Reality Shows R Us. But please, don’t call yourself History anymore.

Corus Entertainment, I have been paying you plenty of money over the years, and for what? For this garbage? If your History channel can’t actually air real, related history during the week of the 100th anniversary of the conclusion of one of the greatest conflicts of all time, why on earth am I giving you my hard-earned money?

No wonder people are cutting the cord in droves. Who could blame them? I get infinitely more historical value from watching a handful of YouTube channels than I am getting from you.

I’ve been slowly cutting down our TV, down quite a ways from a package that had

been pretty much the works.

And you know what? I don’t miss it, and neither does anyone else in the household.

My kids hardly watch broadcast TV at all. I don’t know if our 13-year-old could even tell me the channel number for any particular station other than the news channel. It is of little use to her.

Instead, she watches Netflix, on her laptop or iPad. I think there is a very real need and space for specialty TV; but most of those channels seem to have lost their way. And most of those channels happen to be owned and operated by Corus.

The Canadian Radio and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has allowed this to happen, slowly but surely, over the years. If that’s the case, why do we even have a CTRC? If History can’t show history anymore, I don’t know if I need a TV. Those scissors are coming closer and closer to cutting the cord. Are you listening, Corus?

Large farms are nothing new to the prairies Recently I visited with Bruce Frederickson of Theodore to talk about a project of his to recreate the grand home of Richard Seeman, one of the earliest settlers in the district.

Seeman was a major influence in the region.

It was 1893 and the Manitoba and North Western Railway was in desperate need of cash when Seeman arrived on the scene with a ready supply of cash which allowed him to buy title to 80,000 acres (125 sections) of railway land for $80,000.

That was a huge investment for the time period. The proceeds from the land sale enabled the railway to continue operations for several years, and Seeman acquired land along the M&NWR line between Winnipeg and Yorkton. He would re-sell most of the land but on a portion near what would become Theodore he started a sizeable farm of his own.

“The first report of Seeman’s crop-growing successes occurred near the end of the first year the Seeman farm was in operation and stated that, from two relatively small stacks of sheaves, the Seeman farm had realized 1200 bushels of grain.

Another report from the following year stated that “Mr. Seeman expects a total yield of wheat, oats and barley of forty thousand bushels.” Seeman’s expectations were fulfilled. Oats yielded

106 bushels per acre that year. Because there was insufficient granary space on the farm to accommodate the threshed grain, the sheaves were left in a stack and threshed as needed during the winter,” wrote Neil Gregory, Saskatchewan History magazine.

As Frederickson recounted some of the history of the Seeman farm, the background that inspired him to re-create the scale model of the family home, it made me think about the scale of some of the earliest Prairie farmers.

We tend to hear of the Prairies being divvied-up to immigrants in homestead parcels of approximately 160 acres. That

was certainly how my own grandparents started their lives in Canada after immigrating from England or what is now the Czech Republic, depending on which root of my family tree you follow.

But there were also what can only be described as megafarms, at least in relation to the era.

Perhaps the most famous is the Bell farm at Indian Head, marked today by the reconstructed round barn and the historic site it is part of.

“Construction of the Bell Farm started in 1882, under the direction of A. J. Osment. Within a year over 100 buildings were constructed on this corporate farm, which included about 53,000 acres (or 332 quarter sections),” notes www.bellbarn.ca While a couple of decades later in it’s arrival on the scene, the Motherwell homestead, itself a national historic site is another peek into the scale of farming in this region’s earliest days.

We tend to think of large scale farming as a relatively new trend, but as in most things it is a matter of perspective, and from the earliest days of the Prairies some have sought to grow their operations to scales well beyond the average. It just seems a part of our heritage that has been lost to time.

MS Society of Canada Releases Vitamin D Recommendations for people with MS The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada has released evidence-based recommendations for vitamin D supplementation and maintenance of vitamin D serum levels to help people affected by multiple sclerosis (MS) make informed decisions about their health, according to a release.

Research has shown a strong link between vitamin D deficiency and an increased risk of developing MS. The recommendations provide information for at-risk populations as well as people diagnosed with MS, said the release.

The document also highlights comorbid conditions and information on toxicity associated with vitamin D supplementation. Based on evidence in the field and developed through consultation and collaboration with members of the research community and people living with MS, the recommendations are endorsed by The Canadian Network of Multiple Sclerosis Clinics and The Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers.

“According to multiple studies, vitamin D deficiency is a risk factor for MS,” said Dr. Ruth Ann Marrie, Director, MS Clinic, Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre and a member of the Vitamin D and MS Panel who worked on the recommendations. “As vitamin D is produced due to sun exposure, Canadians are particularly vulnerable to vitamin D deficiency due to our geographical location. If you’re not getting enough sunlight, which can be a common problem during the winter months, or being careful about sun exposure to reduce the risk of skin cancer, it is important to supplement your diet to ensure adequate intake.”

Vitamin D promotes calcium absorption,

needed to build and strengthen bones, and directly interacts with genes associated with the immune system. In addition to decreasing the risk of developing MS, vitamin D may also beneficially modify the course of MS. People with biological family members who have MS are at higher risk of developing the disease.

Other lifestyle factors that could modify one’s risk of developing MS include past exposure to Epstein-Barr virus, smoking and second-hand tobacco exposure, and obesity. Generally, adults with MS and those at risk for MS should consume between 600 to 4000 IU of vitamin D to ensure sufficient intake to achieve the target vitamin D serum level status. It is imperative to consult a medical professional to determine the optimal range and appropriate monitoring on an individual basis. Vitamin D should not be the sole method of treatment for MS, according to the release.

“Information like this is important,” says Marie-Ève Simard whose mother lives with MS. “There are many uncertainties surrounding MS but having these recommendations available to someone like myself, who may be at risk of the disease, gives me hope.”

To ensure you’re meeting your recommended daily vitamin D intake, the recommendations outline sun exposure, vitamin D supplements, and food sources including fatty fish, egg yolks, and foods enriched with vitamin D. Good variety of items for sale at Christmas in November

Organizers of the Christmas in November craft sale held in the OCC Hall on November 18 said responses from persons attending were “excellent.”

“The admission price of $2 was well worth it,” was the general feeling expressed by those who attended the annual event held to raise money for the Kamsack Playhouse Theatre.

Although there were two less exhibitors this year, the event was well represented and well attended according to organizers.

“We wish to acknowledge all those who volunteered their time and donated in any way to help make this annual event a success,” said Brenda Wyllychuk, president of the theatre board.

The main door prize of the flower arrangement provided by Flower House Florist was won by Mary Vereschagin.

Kamsack Atom Flyers split weekend games

By Kent Hembling After a difficult defeat against Yorkton, the Kamsack Atom Flyers bounced back in fine fashion to gain a split of two games over the past weekend.

On November 23, the Flyers hit the highway for the first road game of the year.

The game was in Yorkton and the opponent was the Yorkton Medicine Shoppe Terriers.

The first period saw the Flyers attack the Yorkton squad for the first couple shifts of the game. Flyers players had a couple of “Grade A” chances to put them on the board but Yorkton’s goalie No. 29 Carson Kerluke came up big with some big saves to keep the game scoreless.

With those early saves, the Yorkton tender gave his teammates momentum and created some doubt in the minds of the Kamsack players. The first goal of the game came seven minutes into the opening frame with a little controversy.

A shot by No. 16 Emmanuel Adelfolarin from the Yorkton squad looked like it was stopped and underneath the right pad of the Flyers goalie No. 1 Shayla Allard. But the referee had signalled a goal.

If there was video review on the play, the Flyers coaching staff were pretty sure the call would have been overturned.

Unfortunately for the Flyers, it did not look like they had their legs under them for the first period. They looked tired and sluggish and with that comes mental mistakes.

Yorkton scored four goals in the first and every one of them was the result of a Flyer turnover at one of the blue lines.

The Flyers headed back into their dressing room at the end of the first down 4 to 0.

It definitely wasn’t the Flyers night. The second period started just like the first ended, with Kamsack turning pucks over and giving up odd man rushes on every shift. The Flyers team watched Yorkton score two more goals before replying with one of its own.

No. 15 Kealand Thomas took a pass from linemate No. 9 Chase Hembling and scored to put the Flyers on the board.

With the game at 6 to 1 in favour of Yorkton, No. 10 Jack Gareau of the Flyers tried to ignite his team with a hardnosed goal. Gareau went hard to the net with his hard hat and lunch pail. He worked hard to fight off a defender and sniped a rebound goal in the top shelf, “where mommy keeps the cookies.”

The Flyers players started to generate some momentum their way. But Yorkton was too much for them on this night. The Terriers pulled

away and defeated the Flyers 9 to 4.

A positive note the Flyers could take from this game was that they would get a chance to redeem themselves two days later at home against the Melville Silver Knights team.

Coming into the November 25 affair against the visiting Silver Knights, the Kamsack squad had something to prove.

The team was coming off of its first defeat of the season in Yorkton. The game would prove to be a good test for the Flyers team which had not lost on home ice yet this season.

The Flyers players knew that they would have to clean up a few defensive deficiencies from their game on Friday if they were to have chance of winning this one.

The Kamsack faithful spectators were interested to see how this team would react after the first loss of the season just two days prior. Now, every successful hockey team usually has one or two players step up to lead their team to victory on any given night and throughout a season even the best hockey teams might have to rely on their goalie every once in a while to make a key save at a crucial point in a game or even have to ask their tender to steal a game or two throughout the course of a season.

Well, on this night the Flyers had to rely on No.1 Shayla Allard to come up big in the net. Without hesitation Allard was right there for her team as she had to stand on her head early and often to let the rest of the team get their mojo going. In the first period Allard made some unbelievable saves on the Melville shooters.

Within the first seven minutes of the first period she made saves on two breakaways, two scrambles in front of her and a marvelous save on a one timer from the slot.

To say the least Allard was dialed in.

With the great goaltending they were getting, her Flyers teammates rewarded her with a one goal lead as No. 9 Chase Hembling drove wide on a defender and put in a nice goal five minutes into the first period. The lead would not last long as Melville tied it up on a scramble in front of the net with No. 15 Jayden Coder potting the tying goal to draw even with the Flyers.

The action was back and forth all period long. Without the concentration and great play of Allard, Melville could easily have been up by more than 2 to 1 at the end of the first.

With the Flyers players knowing that Allard was on

top of her game, they wanted to help her out and score some goals in the second frame. So, less than a minute into the middle frame No. 5 Kealand Thomas fired home a goal set up on a beautiful drop pass from his centre No. 9 Chase Hembling. These two players are showing everyone that they are tough to defend against.

But Melville did not wilt.

They scored the next goal with 16:20 left in the second to go up by one.

Still in the middle frame Allard had to stand tall in the Kamsack net and make key saves as she stopped two more odd man rushes. Her save of the game came just after Melville tied it up. Kamsack players were hemmed in their zone for over a minute. There were two shots from the point, kicked to the corner. On a shot from the slot, Allard made a blocker save. Then a crosscrease pass went to a wide open Silver Knight player that shot it and Allard came across and made the save and also held on to the rebound to get the much needed whistle for the Flyers. With the momentum swing that Allard provided her team, the scoring line of No. 15 Kealand Thomas and No. 9 Chase Hembling went back to work. Thomas converted on a rebound shot

made by Hembling to tie up the game at 3 going into the second intermission.

The Kamsack Atom Flyers were ready to let the visitors know that nobody comes into their barn and walks away with a win. So in the third period the Flyers pulled out all the stops. Goaltender Allard continued to show her team that she was all business, turning away any Melville chances and even got help from her high-pitched friends, the goal posts.

The offensive play of her teammates Thomas and Hembling really took over in the third as well. These two players are starting to find some great chemistry, and scored all of the third period goals for the Flyers in back and forth play.

Hembling potted a natural hat trick and Kealand Thomas added another to give himself a hat trick for the game. At the final horn Flyers came away with a hard fought 7 to 5 win. Every team member congratulated No. 1 Shayla “The Wall” Allard as these kids knew their goalie played robber and just stole the game for them.

The next game will be November 30 against the Yorkton Deneschuk team during Kamsack’s Midnight Madness.

Kamsack holds successful minor hockey day

By Kent Hembling November 17 was minor hockey day in Kamsack. The Broda Sportsplex was jampacked with players, coaches, families and fans for the entire day as all Flyers teams had a game to play throughout the day.

Kamsack Atom Flyers came up with a real team effort win.

The Atom team faced the Cote Selects, which didn’t have far to travel for this tilt.

Everything was clicking early and often for the Flyers as they came out flying and put up eight goals in the first period on the way to a rewarding win.

“It was great to see us play as a team as everyone was involved offensively and defensively for a full 60 minutes.” said Jeremy Allard, coach.

In the first period, No. 8 Rhys Lawless, No. 3 Hayden Quewezance and No. 19 Zac Keshane all scored their first goals of the season. As the first period came to a close the Flyers had an 8 to 1 lead.

The Flyers kept their foot on the gas pedal and put another six goals on the board in the second. A bright spot for the Cote Selects was the play of No. 87 Bryden Cochrane, as he scored two of his five goals in this game in the

second period.

It looked like the Kamsack coach had a gut feeling as he played one of his defenseman, No. 16 Brady Rezansoff, up to forward for a few shifts.

And on his second shift playing the wing, Rezansoff pounced on a loose puck in the high slot and beat Cote’s goalie low on the far side for his first goal of the year.

After watching many of his teammates score their first goals of the year, No. 7 Parker Lorenzo of the Flyers figured he would join in and put his name on the list of players who were getting off the “shnide.” So, in the final frame, he took a nice pass

from No.9 Chase Hembling at the side of the net and buried his opportunity in the back of the yawning cage.

The Flyers would finish the game with an 18 to 6 win.

In the last game of the day, the pee wee Flyers also played against the team from down the road, the Cote Peewee Selects, and pulled away to a high scoring win.

It was a tightly played first period with end to end action.

Both goalies were keeping their teams in the game early.

First year Flyers goalie No. 31 Brooke Taylor probably faced the most rubber in the opening frame, but both goalies must have felt good

about their play heading into the first intermission with the game knotted up at 3.

The Flyers had more jump in their step for the second period as they controlled most of the play and were rewarded with five second period goals.

No. 52 Kaylee Keshane scored the flyers fifth goal of the game with a great, low, hard wrist shot from the point that dangled the twine for her first of the year.

At the end of the second period the Flyers had some breathing room with an 8 to 5 lead.

No. 43 Carter Salahub scored his first of the year with 4:09 left on a hard snapshot that beat a sprawled Cote goalie.

The goals of the game followed. No. 42 Haven Krawetz was rewarded for her hard work all game long.

Krawetz took a feed from No. 40 Bobby Taylor and caught the goalie sliding from post to post. Haven tucked it away into the back of the net. The fans, and especially the Flyers bench, erupted as they knew that was Haven’s first goal as a Peewee player.

Not to be outdone, with 43 seconds left, No. 57 Willard Keshane found a loose puck in the high slot and ripped a low wrister into the net. The “big man from Kamsack” was so elated that he showed the fans how happy he was with a loud scream. You could see the young man’s smile from anywhere in the arena as he skated down the middle of the ice pumping his fist for his first celebration after scoring that goal. It was almost like he was winning a bet.

The final horn sounded and the Flyers won 16 to 6.

Victoria School does well in SaskTel Punt, Pass and Kick competition For the second year in a row Victoria School is home to a provincial champion in the eight and under girls SaskTel Pass, Punt and Kick competition.

This year Meri (Meredith) Burback won the Kamsack competition and moved on to the regional competition in Melville. Finishing first in Melville, she then competed in Regina during the final against the best from every region in the province.

Her punt in Regina made her the provincial winner.

She was honoured along with all the other provincial winners at the last regular season home game of the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Mosaic Stadium where she received her plaque in a

New $10 bill circulates message of equality and human rights The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is celebrating the launch of Canada’s new $10 banknote, which is covered with imagery that promotes equality and human rights, said a CMHR release.

Featuring a dominant portrait of Viola Desmond as the first iconic Canadian woman on a regularly circulating Bank of Canada note, the bill also depicts the CMHR, an eagle feather and an excerpt from the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, according to the release.

“Canadians will now carry

a story about human rights in their pockets,” said CMHR president and CEO John Young. “The circulation of this new banknote represents an incredible opportunity to provoke questions and conversations all across the country about topics like racism and reconciliation and hope for the future.”

Young joined Bank of Canada Governor Stephen S. Poloz and Desmond’s sister, Wanda Robson, at the CMHR to officially launch the unique, vertically oriented purple bill.

You will be working directly with victims of crime and traumatic events by providing crisis intervention, information, support and assistance throughout their involvement in the criminal justice system. You will also be responsible for recruiting and supervising volunteers and their work victims. This position involves substantial contact with the public, volunteer victim support workers, community agencies and police employees.

This position is based in Kamsack, Saskatchewan and is directly supervised by the Victims Services Coordinator. The part-time position is 50% time or 20 hours per week.

The guessing games that come with age

By Kaare Askildt Let the games begin.

After reaching the age of 75, I became a participant in the guessing games. I usually have to guess why I went into a room, except the bathroom of course, although that’s not really true either.

I have on occasion ventured into the bathroom with no desire to relieve myself of anything, and then tried to guess what compelled me to go in there. I’m too embarrassed to ask Marion, so I guess I’ll just forget about it.

We do write a grocery list for our monthly trip to the supermarket. However, some items may pop up during the drive to the store, but we guess we’ll remember.

We usually find out when we’re halfway home that we guessed wrong, so I guess we’ll just forget about it.

When we’re gathered as a family, usually a lively conversation will occur. We all take turns expressing ourselves, and I try to remember what my points are with respect to what has already been said. I guess I’ll wait until my turn, and then I’ll share my points of wisdom.

When my turn arrives, I realize that I can’t recall my points of wisdom, so I guess I’ll just forget about it.

I asked Marion to remind me to make an important phone call. She reminded me about making the call just after lunch, but I couldn’t remember and not even guess what I wanted to talk to the person about, so I guess I just forgot about it.

Then an hour later I guessed what it was and made the call.

Marion and I treated ourselves to a nice lunch the last time we were in Saskatoon.

We were perusing the menus when the waitress, who seemed a bit befuddled, approached us.

“May I please take your order?” she asked with a smile.

“We’re still deciding,” said Marion. “By the way, how do you prepare the chickens?”

“I don’t think they do anything special madam,” answered the waitress. “I

guess they just tell the chickens straight up that they’re gonna die.”

Ole and Sven were taking a shortcut and hiking through the forest to Knut’s hunting cabin. Knut was away, but he let his friends use the cabin in return for a couple of moose steaks.

They were hiking in the dusk through unfamiliar terrain and following a set of moose tracks, when all of a sudden they fell into a dark hole.

“It’s dark down in here,” said Ole. “I guess so,” said Sven, “but I don’t have a light, so I cannot see.”

Knut was enjoying a shot of Akevitt in the local bar, when a stranger sat down next to him and introduced himself as Tom. Knut seemed to detect a slight accent, so he smiled at Tom and asked, “I detect a slight accent, where were you born?”

“I was born in Norway,” said Tom.

“Which part?” asked Knut.

“My whole body I guess,” answered Tom. By the way, I hope all you young readers realize that the reason us old people smile all the time is because we can’t hear a word you’re saying, so we guess at it and give it a funny spin.

Our eyesight might not be the best either, as in the three old retired friends that walked into a building.

You’d guess that one of them would have seen it.

Ole was a science teacher, and while lecturing he told the class that oxygen is a must for breathing and sustaining life, any life including plant life and it was discovered in 1773. Sven took a deep breath and uttered, “I wonder what happened in the years before 1773? But I thank God I was born after 1773, otherwise I guess I would have died without it.”

Lena was in her early 70’s and had been given a

computer by her grandson.

Being very happy with her new gadget, she wanted to doll it up. She entered a computer store and searched all over, but she couldn’t find what she was looking for. She saw a nice young man that seemed to work in the store, and asked him, “Where do you keep the curtains?”

“Curtains?” asked the young man with a puzzled expression, “that’s a term I haven’t heard before. Please tell me what you mean by curtains.”

“Curtains for the computer,” said Lena.

“You don’t need curtains for the computer,” said the young man.

“Really?” asked Lena.

“But my computer has Windows.”

Kari was overjoyed when she got a cell phone from Sven on her 65th birthday.

The next day she headed off to the mall and took the cell phone with her. Sven guessed that she had her cell

in her purse, and decided to give her a call. The phone rang, and Kari answered it. “ H o w ’s t h e n e w c e l l phone?” asked Sven.

“Great,” giggled Kari, “but how did you know that I’m at Walmart?”

At my age I guess I can allow myself to have some fun with telemarketers.

“How are you today?” asked the telemarketer.

“I’m glad you asked,” I answered, “because it seems to me that nobody cares anymore, and I have all these ailments. My arthritis is bothering me, my nose is stuffed and my head hurts.”

“Wow,” said the telemarketer, “we might be able to help with your stuffed nose and headache. We are a mobile carpet cleaning service and would like to book an appointment with you.”

“Carpet cleaning you say?” I questioned in a sinister voice, “can you get human blood out of the carpet?”

He hung up.

“Currently, seven provinces across Canada have incorporated safer inhalation supplies into their harm reduction programming,” said Dr. Ashok Chhetri, SHA’s medical health officer in Yorkton, in a release. “There is evidence from those jurisdictions that suggest that these supplies reduce the risk of contracting HIV and Hepatitis C.” “The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations supports an expanded approach to harm reduction,” said David Pratt, second vice-chief. “By reaching out with better options for people facing addictions issues, we can better spread

the message that there are opportunities in the health care system for treatment and eventual recovery.”

Making safer inhalation supplies available through harm reduction sites and community based organizations will provide people who use drugs an alternative to injecting drugs. In the absence of safer inhalation supplies, makeshift pipes made from materials such as glass bottles and aluminum cans lead to cuts, burns, blisters and open sores that can lead to the transmission of HIV and Hepatitis C when shared, the release said.

“Adding safer inhalation equipment to S a s k a t c h e w a n ’s h a r m

reduction programming is a progressive step forward that will reduce the risk of HIV and Hepatitis C transmission,” said Dr. Peter Butt. “Injection drug use is more dangerous. Safer inhalation equipment will give clients an alternative to injecting.”

Safer inhalation supplies will become available at harm reduction sites within the next few months. There are 26 fixed and three mobile provincially-funded harm reduction programs across the province. As part of efforts to reach as many people as possible, the SHA will also work to ensure key community-based organizations are part of the

expansion.

“Making safer inhalation supplies available through Saskatchewan’s harm reduction sites and eventually CBO’s is an important step in addressing the harms associated with crystal meth use and other drugs,” said Jason Mercredi, executive director of AIDS Saskatoon.

“We are excited that community based organizations will play a role in this important collective effort to meaningfully address addictions issues across Saskatchewan.”

The province of Saskatchewan spends more than $46 million annually on a wide range of addictions services.

Ministry of corrections and policing provides funding to MADD The Ministry of Corrections and Policing and partners are providing $25,000 in funding to MADD Canada as part of government’s efforts to curb impaired driving.

“Government has had a strong partnership with MADD Canada for many years, and we’re proud to provide them with this funding for their educational programs,” said Christine Tell,” corrections and policing minister, in a release.

“We’re always impressed by the great work that MADD Canada does, and we know that ongoing education, especially among young people,

is a big part of creating the social shift needed to eliminate impaired driving.”

The funding will be used

by MADD Canada for programs that educate students and their teachers about the dangers of impaired driving.

This programming also provides students and teachers with strategies they can use to promote safe choices among their family and peers.

“MADD is a key ally in the Government of Saskatchewan’s fight against impaired driving,” said Joe Hargrave, minister responsible for SGI. “Saskatchewan has made significant progress when it comes to curbing

impaired driving, but we need to remain vigilant.

MADD’s education and advocacy work in communities, in schools and in the media helps keep the issue top of mind.”

Government recently paired with MADD Canada, the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure, SGI, SLGA, RCMP, municipal police, and stakeholders from the private sector and hospitality industry on the #howareyougettinghome campaign during this year’s August long weekend, the release said. This campaign incorporated traditional media and social media to

educate people about the risks of impaired driving and encouraged them to make safe, healthy choices over the weekend.

“This campaign was a great opportunity to remind everyone about the importance of planning ahead to ensure you have safe and sober transportation,” said Michelle Okere, MADD Canada regional manager.

“Additionally, with the support of partners and stakeholders, we were able to highlight innovative safe ride options, especially in rural communities, where we saw significant uptake on social media.”
