Loneliness Can Spread Like a Cold

Sometimes the results of one study end up being useful in another. That’s what happened with the Framingham Heart Study, begun in 1948. Researchers decided to use the information to study loneliness and social networks. What they learned is surprising: Loneliness is contagious, just like a cold or flu. Here are some things they learned: People can be lonely even within their social network, and can pass that negative emotion along to others. Most people feel lonely 48 days per year. The number of days of feeling lonely can increase for each lonely friend, but can be reduced by 5 percent for every non-lonely friend. If someone has a lonely friend who also has a lonely friend, the risk goes up, even if that other person is unknown. The ability to “catch” loneliness from someone else: Is worse for men than women. Is worse among clusters of friends as opposed to family members.

Researchers even created a graphical representation with small dots in yellow, green and blue, indicating the varying degrees of loneliness, linked by red and black lines, for family and friends and a spouse. They called it the Lonely Network, and each dot represented a person. Feelings of loneliness are worse for the people at the end of the strands. Lonely people don’t trust social connections, can be hostile, are often shy and have low self-esteem. Their behavior begins a downward spiral when they perceive that they have less satisfying social experiences. They end up cutting their ties to others, but only after they’ve spread the feeling of loneliness to others — like a cold. As hard as this is to believe, researchers have already found similar connections between smoking, obesity and happiness. We know this continued with his new one, Rodney Dangerfield. s A “wonderful” singer signed on at Motown Records when he was 11 years old. Stevland Hardaway Judkins, blind since birth, changed his name to Stevie Wonder, and his illustrious career has netted more Grammy awards than any other solo artist. s Cassius Marcellus Clay entered the boxing ring at the 1960 Olympics in Rome and emerged with the gold medal. Following his conversion to Islam in 1964, this light heavyweight boxer who could “float like a butterfly and sting like a bee” changed his name to Muhammad Ali. s Born in Albania in 1910, Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu devoted her life to serving others, receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts. Her humanitarian deeds were accomplished while using the name of Mother Teresa. s It would be hard to imagine doing a BackRub search on the internet, but it might have been! That’s the name that fellow Stanford computer science grad students came up with for the search engine they were developing back in 1996. It was BackRub for about a year until Larry Page and Sergey Brin decided it was time for a change. They made a play on the word “googol,” a math term for the number represented by the numeral one followed by 100

In 2002, the American Dialect Society voted “google” the “most useful word of the year.” s Dana Elaine Owens has entertained us in many arenas – as a rap singer, model, in the movies, and on television. She started singing in a New Jersey Baptist church choir at a young age. Her cousin nicknamed her Latifah, which translates from the Arabic as “delicate and sensitive,” when she was just eight years old, and she has gone on to enormous fame as Queen Latifah. s In 1973, the vice president of the United States resigned amid accusations of tax evasion. Although he swore he was innocent, Spiro Anagnostopoulos, better known as Spiro Agnew, was sentenced to three years’ probation, disbarred, and fined $10,000. s Carrot-topped Lucille Ball was actually born with that name, but changed it to Dianne Belmont for a time when trying to get her modeling career off the ground. Ironically, the middle name of this star who married Desi Arnaz was Desiree. Lucy is credited with saying, “A man who correctly guesses a woman’s age may be smart, but he’s not very bright.”
s A native Canadian, country singer Shania Twain began life as Eileen Regina Edwards, singing in bars as early as age 8. She was adopted by stepfather Jerry Twain, a member of the Ojibwa tribe, and took on the first name of Shania, which translates from that language as “I’m on my way.” With five Grammy awards to her credit, it appears she is exactly that. s Underneath all that outlandish makeup and heavy metal music is Chaim Witz, born in Israel, the son of a Nazi concentration camp survivor. You might recognize him as Gene Simmons of KISS rocker fame. Young Chaim emigrated to the U.S. at age 8, and adopted the name Eugene Klein. Holding a Bachelor of Education degree, he once taught sixth grade in New York City’s Spanish Harlem. Although most famous for founding the band in the early 1970s, Simmons’ childhood ambition was to become a rabbi. He speaks four languages, and is currently working to master Mandarin Chinese. s When Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor, Jr. was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks in 1969, no one knew he’d retire as basketball’s all-time scorer with 38,387 points to his credit. Just prior to his 1971 season with the Bucks, Alcindor converted to Islam and changed his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, which translates “noble, powerful servant.”

Sorenson Looking for a Cup Ride When the Daytona 500 rolls around, Reed Sorenson will be only 24 years old. Unless something changes, he won’t have a car to drive in the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup opener. Sorenson is being replaced in Richard Petty Motorsports’ No. 43. Teammate A.J. Allmendinger is moving into the car from No. 44, which apparently will be no more. Provided all the intended agreements are finalized, the team is merging with Yates Racing, changing from Dodge to Ford and fielding Fusions for drivers Kasey Kahne, Elliott Sadler, Allmendinger and Paul Menard, who competed last year at Yates. “I want to thank the Richard Petty Motorsports organization for giving me the chance to race the No. 43 Dodge this year,� said Sorenson. “I did the best I could and tried to represent the number and company in a way that would make Mr. Petty and our sponsors proud. “I learned a lot this year. The opportunity to work with people like Richard Petty and Dale Inman is something I’ll never forget.� Sorenson, of Peachtree City, Ga., is a victim of circumstances, but his inability to put together a

solid season contributed to his problems. In his fourth full season, Sorenson finished 29th in the point standings, with only one top-10 finish. He was 24th, 22nd and 32nd in his first three seasons, all with the team then known as Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates, a team now aligned with what once was Dale Earnhardt Inc. After a promising beginning, Sorenson has been unable to make the adjustment to competing at
stock car racing’s highest level. He won an ARCA race in 2004 and is a three-time winner in the Nationwide Series. The combination of NASCAR’s ban on testing and a new team was more than Sorenson could overcome. Early last season, Sorensen said, “I think we’re making progress and getting our cars better in practice. It’s just tough to do without testing and being with a new team. I think we’re getting the chemistry a little bit better, and I think that should get better as the year goes on.� The improvement never took hold, and by season’s end, Sorenson found himself outside the sport looking in. He’s still young, though, and is likely to resurface at some point, perhaps in the Nationwide Series. He has never competed previously in the Camping World Truck Series. Your Money in 2010 Along with making resolutions, the new year is a good
time to plan how you’ll handle your money in 2010.
Start by reviewing your savings goal from a year ago. Did you reach that goal? Tough as it can be to save, increasing your efforts to put money away can be a lifesaver should you become unemployed or in case of an emergency. Review your rates on CDs that are coming due and research where you’ll put your money next. Interest rates on CDs are extremely poor nowadays, but every dollar counts. Try not to lock in for more than six months. Look at your credit-card balances. Which ones are you close to paying off, perhaps within six months? Can you double up on your payments (assuming you’re not continuing to make charges on the cards) and get them paid off faster? Remember not to cancel the card when you’ve brought the balance down to zero. Your credit score will suffer for it, as it takes away from your percentage of available credit. Just let the card sit there unused, or perhaps make one charge now and then and pay it off when the bill comes. Review your credit score and take steps to get it to 740 or higher, or to keep it there if it’s already over that number. Those with higher credit scores can benefit by getting better interest rates on loans. Remember that you can get a free copy of your credit reports each year. Check for errors. If you have children who earn an allowance or money from odd jobs, start them off with a passbook savings account. You’ll likely have to be a co-signer on the account, which ensures that they can’t empty the account without your presence and approval. Be sure that the account won’t be subject to fees. Giving to charity takes planning to make sure your money goes where you intend. Research your intended charities at the two top charity Web sites: GuideStar (www.guidestar.org) and Charity Navigator (www.charitynavigator.org). If you volunteer at a nonprofit organization, keep track of your expenses and mileage. Those could be deductible on your taxes. What Is Secondary High Blood Pressure? DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a 42-year-old male who has had high blood pressure for the past two years. I have been on many medicines, but my pressure doesn’t go much lower. I don’t smoke or drink. No one else in my family has high blood pressure. I am about 25 pounds overweight. My doctor mentioned that I might have secondary high blood pressure. What is that? — R.B. ANSWER: Ordinary high blood pressure, or hypertension, is essential hypertension — high blood pressure that comes on its own. Secondary high blood pressure is an elevation of pressure due to another process. A leading cause of secondary high blood pressure is a narrowed kidney artery. Because of the narrowing, the kidney thinks body’s blood pressure is too low. It begins to turn out large quantities of renin, a kidneymade chemical that raises blood pressure. This kind of high blood pressure is known as renovascular hypertension. It can be cured by relieving the blockage in the kidney artery. Adrenal gland tumors, Cushing’s disease and a very unusual tumor called a pheochromocytoma are other causes of secondary high blood pressure. The bright side of secondary high blood pressure is its
curability when the “secondary” process is treated. Your young age and the fact that your pressure doesn’t respond to the drugs well are two factors that suggest a secondary process might be going on Even though you didn’t ask, you can help yourself by losing the extra 25 pounds of weight you carry. Diet and exercise do work. You also can do yourself good by reducing greatly the amount of salt in your diet. Proof of secondary high blood pressure involves some complicated tests, so don’t be surprised if your doctor arranges them for you.
