The Structure of Place

Pieces of trace paper containing different elements of the map are placed on top of one another to create a single picture with distinct parts.

Finding the Essence of Architecture

The images demonstrate how analyzing a building through drawings can help a surveyor better understand how a building was conceptualized, constructed, and how it is generally used.

Analytical diagrams help the surveyor better communicate the important features of the building to others. Repetitive elements and unique aspects of the structure may otherise go unnoticed without these diagrams

Formal Organization

The drawings display the assembly of the pictured model. Each image highlights a different face of the cube as blocks are applied to create the final form.

The models display an intertwining of two separate systems, centralized and linear. Around the edges of the cube there is an invisible datum defined by an inch of separation between the blocks. On the inside of the cube (featured to the right) 5 blocks direct attention towards the small central cube in the middle of the form.

Body, Site, Program, and Structure

The photographs display the various ways the pavilion can be read at different points of view.

When entering and exiting the pavilion, the structure appears to be shaped like a cube, but when viewing the pavilion from the sides it mimics the shape of a seashell or fan.

The diagram to the left displays how the wings of pavilion are assembled. The pavilion is designed to allow a light material like cardboard or polypropylene to both maintain structure and allow light and wind through.

The above image contextualizes the structure by showing how the pavilion would appear on the site. The image makes it clear that the pavilion is meant to provide slight shade and privacy outside of a separate building.

(De)Composition and Dialogue

The diagram simplifies the initial building into it’s two primary shapes, a square and a triangle. In the third diagram I divided the building into it’s key components while keeping these basic shapes in mind. I then used the various sections of the original building and rearranged them in a collage to further emphasize the basic shapes.

Drawing Geometry

A set of orthographic projections can be better understood as a three dimensional object when paired with axonometric drawings.

Once these basic ideas are understood, they can be combined, split apart, or changed in some form to become something unique.

Constructing Geometry

The final iteration of an idea begins with a basic structure. The orthographic projections that were provided in the previous project, Drawing Geometry, progressed into a three dimensional space by combining ideas and representing them in different ways.

The project progressed from drawing orthographic projections axonometrically, to drawing each surface of the objects, to making two dimensional models, combining those models, then using their basic shapes to represent abstract concepts (contemplation, transition, and arrival).

Rooted Precedent

Diagrams can help an architect better understand a building.

Studying things like air flow, circulation, massing, structure, sunlight and other key elements of the building and its environment can help someone understand why it was designed the way it was, and how that design can be improved in future projects.

Cabbagetown Resource Book

Before designing a building for a specific area, it’s best to research and understand the building’s surroundings.

The history of the town, building restrictions, precedents, setbacks, climate, precipitation, wildlife, and anything else that can impact the building and the people occupying it must be researched before designing. This specific research booklet was developed for Cabbagetown Georgia.

In this live/work studio, both clients wanted their work, social, and private lives to be seperate from eachother, so making that a central aspect of the design was essential.
