EDITOR’S NOTE As I sit here writing this editor’s note, the strangest thing happened today.

My professor asked me, “Marcel. What is your major?” I replied, “I am currently in the Associate Arts in Teaching Program with a focus on Secondary Education. I want to teach photography. I told him that I might be graduating with two degrees and two certificates.” He said that he could tell because of how I work. Later on in the day, someone in my class asked me the same question and if I work? I told her that I was the Editor-In-Chief for Ka Mana’o.

She gave me the same reaction that my professor told me. She even asked me how do I manage everything that I do, and my response was simple and that response was, “I set aside hours to work on certain things. I always make sure that I have time for myself to play videogames or even watching movies. I set a pace for myself that I feel will help me succeed.” She was just surprised and told me that she can’t

figure out how I manage everything. Like everything in life, there will always be ups and downs, but the main thing is that I will never let the downs drag me out. For those of you who feel this way and actually got this far in this Editor’s Note, never give up on your dreams. If things feel hard, just roll with it because life will be challenging, but when you reward yourself by going through the hard times. On a side note, with the recent passing of Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington, I wanted to put this out there, if you are battling depression, please talk to a friend, a loved one, or even a counselor on campus to help you. I lost a few friends due to depression and I hope to be able to reach out to some of you to let you know that you are not alone.

Have you ever wonder who created the smartphone and when it was created? No. It was not Apple, nor Samsung, nor was the original smartphone called Blackberry. The original smart phone was created by IBM and they called it “Simon.” Here’s a little insight; the term “smartphone” did not become a name until 1995. The smartphone was created in 1992, but the phone did not launch until 1995 thus introducing the world to the original smartphone.

When Simon was first made available to the public, it came out with a hefty price tag of $899.99 (If this phone was to come out today, the price would be at $1,435.00).

At the time, the Simon was built to combine a P.D.A. with mobile phone capabilities. The screen on the phone has a monochrome (Which looks like the original Nintendo Gameboy which shows the colors green and yellow and very pixelated) and the touchscreen is rather slow to respond. When purchasing the phone, it came with a stylus that is highly recommended to use with Simon.

One of the coolest features is that when the phone ran out of space, a P.C. card could be bought and added into the phone much like an iPhone user could purchase more space on iCloud. Although it seemed like a major breakthrough in technology, the phone never made it big. According to Bloomberg Businessweek, IBM only sold 50,000 units, and therefore halting production on the phone.

SHINE BRIGHT LIKE A DIAMOND

In 1867, the first diamond was discovered in the Cape Colony, South Africa by a 15 year old named Erasmus Jacobs found a transparent rock on his father’s farm which was located on the South Bank of the Orange River. The first diamond discoveries were found in alluvial and they were far from any streams or rivers. The discovery was found in Yellow Earth and below in a hard rock called blue ground, but has later been named Kimberlite (after a mining town named Kimberley). Although there was some ups and downs in the mining industry at that time, the diamond mine actually slowed down due to World War 1. By 1902, the mine was shut down and only operated on a caretaker basis. Then by 1916 to 1932, there was a cease on mining due to the depressed state of the Diamond Industry. On May 22, 1954 a huge discovery was made, a diamond was discovered that measured just under 51mm long, about 25mm wide, and 19mm thick. The name of the Diamond was Niarchos Diamond and was measured at 426.5 ct..

THE TREADMILL: A TORTURE DEVICE?

You’re moving, but you’re going nowhere. It has felt like hours, but sure enough, it has only been almost six minutes. Almost. You let out a frustrated sigh and ask yourself why you put yourself through this type of torture. And torture is exactly what running on a treadmill is, or it was in the 1800s. First spotted in the height of the Roman Empire, treadmills were used in order to lift heavier weights in the process of building structures. But, thanks to the Victorian Era, the treadmill can now be considered an ancient torture device.

British engineer Sir William Cubitt is responsible for inventing the prison treadmill. Established for putting English inmates through hard labor as punishment.

At the time, the english prison system was corrupted with use of execution and deportation so as an idea of reform, the treadmill was introduced to the system.

Inmates were responsible for working the wheel in order to produce the power necessary to grind corn, wheat, as well as pump water. They would turn a large paddle wheel by stepping on its spokes. Once the prisoner stepped on, they would need to keep taking steps or risk falling off the wheel completely. Prisoners could be forced to operate the treadmill for up to six hours a day. This equivalates to 5,000 to 14,000 feet which is also equal to Mount Everest’s halfway point. Although it was meant to allow convicts to put themselves to good use and have a purpose as they served time, it ultimately served no other purpose except punishment. It was the Prisons Act of 1889 that abolished the hard labor of prisoners and reinforced the idea that labor in prisons should serve constructive purposes.

In the days before online education was popular, students not physically present in a class could still receive education by distance learning, which was made possible through broadcasted classes on cable, radio, or sent through mail.

However, these methods were tedious, and access to materials was not always available. With the rise of the digital age, a wider range of educational resources and information is accessible almost instantaneously. MOOC’s are a form of distance learning in which there is an unlimited number of students enrolled who have open access to the course content via the internet. Lectures for these courses come in the form on videos, presentations, and often utilizes free open content. Students can audit or enroll in these courses, and can learn at their own schedule. Courses are usually free to audit, but paid options of earning certificates or credentials are also available. These certificates are recognized by some employers, which may be beneficial to advancing one’s career. Some MOOC’s even have agreements with specific colleges to offer college credit, which may save time and money. Courses are auditable by almost anyone, and it can be used to get an idea of what different majors are like.

VOLTRON

DreamWorks Animation, World Events Productions, and Studio Mir proudly introduced Voltron: Legendary Defenders on June 10, 2016. This reproduction of the timeless journey was released on the well known outlet called Netflix.

However, some fans of the previous reboots and the original have one or perhaps a few complaints. The brave paladins of Voltron have been switched, whether it be their sex or the lion they pilot, to even their racial backgrounds. No matter the argument at hand, this series holds the attention of their viewers, leaving them on the edge of their

seats. It provides the fandom with the perfect amount of action and comedy, along with some suspense and character development. In season three, the pilot of the blue lion showed a moment of insecurity when talking to another character. It was not only the blue pilot that had developing moments, but all five pilots, as did the last remaining Alteans. The plot is smooth and thick with moments to be remembered. They pull at one’s heartstrings, making it near impossible to cease watching..

RAIN OF GOLD

In Victor Villaseñor’s Rain of Gold, he tells the tale of how his parents met and fell in love in the United States after both they both immigrated from Mexico. Picture it, the year is 1910 and your country is going through a revolution. The government hasn’t been stable in several years. The soldiers sworn to protect you raid your little village often, lighting your house on fire, killing your animals, attacking the women, and hanging anyone who tries to stop them. Rain of Gold not only accurately portrays Mexico in this time, but it also shows the strong bonds of family and how the the belief that love can get one through anything can get one through the most hardest of times.

Told in third person through the eyes of Villaseñor’s mother, Lupe, and his father, Salvador, the author allows a glimpse into the past through this recount of personal history. He describes the heartbreak of having to leave the home country behind and the perilous journey it took to cross the border, With Salvador almost dying alone in the desert at the tender age of 11 after missing the train with his family aboard. The readers also witness firsthand the struggles and lifestyle Mexicans were forced to endure in the States in the early 1900s. The struggles they faced included receiving barely enough money to put food on the table just

because of the color of one’s skin, or not being able to drink a simple glass of alcohol at a bar because of the way one looks. People assumed Mexicans were lazy, stupid, filthy...really, the list went on.

The point is that Rain of Gold includes all these negative aspects, but it’s not a negative book. In fact it’s the complete opposite. It uplifts the soul and has laugh-out-loud moments because of the characters view and outlook on life. A Mexican’s Catholic faith is a big thing for them, and the book portrays as the characters are always thanking God for His blessings or taking in stride hardships, believing that if they are together, everything will work out just fine, that God has a plan for them.

Even though there are two points of view in the book, the views on faith and family are very similar, all having the underlying message that love is what gives a person strength. And that shows in how both families carry on in a country that looks down on them, how they lean on one another when a family member is lost or dies or the rough words they give each other in efforts of peptalk.

Rain of Gold is not only a recounting of family history, or portrayal of the States many people choose to ignore, but it’s an excellent book for anyone with a taste for cultures, selfenrichment or historical memoirs.

obyn Rihanna Fenty, or better known as Rihanna has long dominated the world of music, made headlines on numerous editorial magazines, and has even released her own clothing collection. Luckily, she isn’t stopping there.

In early September of 2017, Fenty dropped her own beauty line, branded as Fenty Beauty. Unlike many other cosmetic lines, Fenty Beauty offers an inclusive variety of 40 shades. Ranging from shade 100 to 500, the variety in selection of PRO FILT’R foundations caters many women, and men from different walks of life. The foundation shades are divided into five categories; Light, medium, tan and deep. Within the categories, the shades are valued by skin undertones; Cool, warm, and neutral. The wide array of shades allows makeup users to precisely find a shade that matches their skin complexion. Immediately after the line’s launch, many reviews floated around the internet. There were plenty of positive reviews in regards to the foundations accommodation for people with albinism and WoC with very rich skin complexion.

BRETMAN ROCK First off, Introduce yourself and give a bit of background information for those who may not know you yet.

My name is Bretman Rock, it’s from two wrestlers, Bret The Hitman Hart and The Rock. I do like makeup online but I don’t really consider myself as a makeup artist. I do consider myself more as a makeup enthusiast rather. Because as a makeup artist you have to know how to apply it on other people. But me, I know know how to apply it on myself. I also work online as comedic influencer. Yeah, that’s kind of what I do.

How old were you when you first started?

I was in 5th grade when I accidentally shaved half of my eyebrows- like the bangah lines.

Like the ones you [Lawrence] have right now.

I messed it up really badly so, I applied my mom’s mascara to fix it. Then I realized, “well I already have mascara on my eyebrows, might as well go all out. So I decided to put it on my my eyelashes, then it went to putting blush and it just naturally expanded from there.

“

Who were your biggest influences when you were beginning?

I think a lot of my influences came from drag, because I’ve been watching drag since I was in 5th grade. I just remember when I first started with the second season of Rupaul’s Drag Race. So a lot of the techniques that I used were derived from drag, like baking and what not.

And just the way that I contour my face, to feminize it, because I’m a male, duh. So I would say that a bunch of drag queens definitely influenced my makeup. Also, youtube helped me find what types of makeup work for me, because what works for other may not work for me.

As of right now, who are your biggest idols in terms of establishing their own cosmetic line?

What advice would you give for those who are beginners in regards to dupes?

I think for the beginning makeup artists who may not have the funds, they should look for dupes. Because makeup is really an investment and people should be really smart with what they buy. What might work for you at the store may work differently when you take it home. If you’re gonna splurge on makeup, I would advise you to splurge on something that has no dupes, likes Fenty Beauty. At the end of the day, make up expires, so you really have to be smart.

What do you appreciate most about cosmetics?

I like how it has the power to make people feel emotions. It’s very expressive, and it tells stories.

In three words, how does makeup make you feel?

Empowered, boosted and just cute.

Given that you have been travelling a lot lately, where are some places that you found beautiful?

Honestly Hawaii, it’s so beautiful here. I hate travelling, so it’s hard for me to find places beautiful. So I would say Hawaii. My own definition of beautiful is not just the place itself, but also the people that lives in it.

For those who look up to you, what message would you like to give them?

Just do things that makes you happy. As long as you’re not hurting people, what really is the problem? I just encourage people to just do them. Just do you boo.

I would say Rihanna with Fenty Beauty, she really understands that not everyone wants studio makeup. She creates make up that is fitting for outdoors. Because, these days, everyone uses snapchat, not everyone uses studio lights. She really knows that her line will look good with millennials who just has their phones to take pictures with. I also like Pat McGrath, because I love the aesthetic that her brand is going towards.

HIKES ON BOTH SIDES OF THE KO’OLAU

Maunawili Falls Located on O’ahu’s Windward side is the popular hike, Maunawili Falls. The start of the hike is in a residential area with street parking located at the end of Maunawili road.

With many roots exposed from the ground, rocks, and a few stream crossings, the trail is moderately difficult. Being about three miles long it can take anywhere from two to four hours to complete. At the end of the trail is a waterfall frequented by locals and visitors alike. Some daring individuals will climb up and even jump into the pool at the base of the falls.

At the beginning the trail mostly goes alongside a stream. It can be pretty muddy at times due to the coverage of the trees in the area and frequent Windward showers. Like many other waterfall trails Maunawili has many exposed tree roots and rocks. Combined with the mud and a few stream crossings, it can be difficult to stay clean and dry. Trying to jump from rock to rock to avoid the water can be a bit of a balancing act, but stepping in the ankle deep water

is a much easier way to traverse the streams if you don’t mind getting your shoes wet. However, any open wounds should not be exposed to the water. The water is contaminated with Leptospirosis, but as long it is not ingested or exposed to open wounds you should be fine.

After about thirty minutes of hiking the trail splits away from the stream and leads up to dugout steps.

The steps go up a small plateaued ridge with a view of the surrounding area. After taking in the view, the path continues and heads back down a slightly shorter section of steps towards the stream. From this point on the path is right next to the stream leads to the falls.

The waterfall, being a very popular hike, tends to be a bit crowded at times, especially on the weekends.

Although it is not advised, many visitors jump off the falls and into the pool of water below. There are multiple spots from which people jump from, ranging from five to thirty feet at the top of the falls. But, it can be dangerous, as the water is

not clear, can vary in depth, and the bottom of the pool is uneven due to rocks If you’re looking for a nice short hike on the Windward side Maunawili falls does not disappoint. With a beautiful waterfall, and a deep pool at the end, it’s definitely worth the trek.

Some useful things to know about the trail: • There are no restrooms • The trail is mostly in the shade • You’re shoes will most likely be getting wet • Don’t start the hike too late.

It can be very dangerous to navigate the trail in the dark • Maps of the trail can be found easily online due to the popularity of the trail • The trail can be very crowded at times, it’s especially noticeable at the falls and narrow parts of the trail

Wa’ahila Ridge There are many hikes that are on Oahu. Some of those hikes are fairly easy to get to, while some of the hikes are hard to access. What if there is a hike that is easy to access, and Mother Nature provides some very delicious fruits? Welcome to the Wa’ahila Ridge Hiking trail. This trail is located at 3081B Paty Dr, Honolulu, HI 96822.

The Wai’ahila Ridge Hiking trail is a relatively easy hiking trail that follows the ridgeline of beautiful Manoa Valley to the left and Palolo

Valley to the right. The area before the trailhead has lots of picnic tables that have roofs over them so that families can get together and enjoy each others’ company. The plus side to this hike is that the restrooms that are located on the top of the hill are really clean.

When entering the hiking trail, hikers will notice that there are very tall green plants. Those plants are actually strawberry guava.

Strawberry guava can be seen throughout the trail and provide

some much needed energy. This is really a fun way to not only enjoy what Mother Nature has to offer as far as the beautiful views go, but it’s another way to really enjoy a healthy snack while hiking.

The Wa’ahila Ridge hike splits off into two section. The left side of the trail cuts off into the lower Wa’ahila Ridge section. The right side of the trail goes to Mt. Olympus. Ka Mana’o wants to know, which section does our readers want to go?

DAY 2 I decided that I wanted to do most of my pieces in water-color. I've always founds watercolor to be a mesmerizing medium to work with. Not only are the colors gorgeously vibrant but I also love the way that it adds so much texture and life to drawing. I've never been to Europe, but I've always imagined that it would be like walking through a watercolor painting. So, I couldn't think of a better thing to paint for day 2.

As an artist, I’ve always wanted to participate in Inktober, but as a generally lethargic human being, I’ve never found the motivation to pick up a pen and commit. This is why I decided things needed to change in 2017. I knew it would be a challenge, but for reasons beyond what my little asian brain could ever comprehend, I dived headfirst into the world of daily drawing. This drawing was Inktober Day 1. I felt it was fitting to represent how big and daunting the next month felt to me but also how excited I was that I picked up that pen!

I’m not gonna lie, I often default to drawing plants when I am bored. But I had recently seen a science illustration of plants that really inspired me. Plus, the watercolor palate that I had, included a lot of really nice warm natural colors. I felt they would complement the plants really well. Not only did I enjoy drawing them, but I am pleased with how they came out.

DAY 3 While experimenting with pens and ink, I discovered with gentle and careful strokes, you can create delicate results. Not all drawings need to be bold or intensive, some can carry the same weight with a more fragile approach.

Music can inspire and motivate a lot of my artwork, and this one has spawned from Ed Sheeran’s: “The A Team.” In the face of narcotic addiction, all we can see is what gives us that high, while we slowly fall apart. I decided to use poppy flowers as the hidden subject, for that is what opioids are made from such a beautiful flower.

DAY 23 I couldn’t help it… I had to include a little pun.

Inktober features a multitude of different types of prompts and ideas for artists to choose from. For October 28th, a past idea was “Black Cat”, the classic feline generally associated with the autumn season. Since there are no strict rules or regulations to Inktober and every artist has their interpretation, this illustration was of a humanized black cat, just for fun and practice with lineart- something I usually don’t do when drawing. Happy Halloween!

I decided to do a rather intense play on shadow and light for this inktober drawing. When I think of ink, I think of how intense the medium itself is with it’s tones. This creates a dramatic piece of art to come into fruition. This piece is a constant reminder that not all the magic in the world is created by some strange phenomena, but rather we hold the whimsical power within our own hands.

Cooking in a kitchen all day long, side to side, mother Valray Jeremiah and daughter Kawena Roque work hard to create their cultural dish. Both mother and daughter spend hours cutting the pork to its needed size. Together, they create a dish known to be pastele stew. Pastele stew derives from the Puerto Rican culture, using pork as its main meat more times than not. This delicacy should be enjoyed by all, not only because of the cultural meaning behind it, but also due to its explosion of flavor and texture.

Hawai’i is known for as a cultural melting pot. Our cultures are important to us, as a whole and as an individual. For example, my family tends to focus on our Puerto Rican side. If one can be close to their culture, then one can be true to themselves.

If the cultural meaning behind it isn’t enough, the explosion of flavor alone can make someone crave it. It starts with the fatty oils from the meat, quickly followed by the juiciness from the olives. And lastly, as you’re about to swallow it, the spices catch you by almost complete surprise. The constantly changing flavors makes this meal all the more enjoyable.

• 5 to 10 lbs. Pork butt or pork shoulder • 1/4 cup Garlic powder • 2 Mama Sita Achuete packets • 2 lg. cans Tomato sauce • 2 bunches chopped Green onion • 2 bunches chopped Chinese parsley • 2 cans pitted Olives, drained • (Optional) • Cayenne pepper and Salt to taste

• Cut the pork into small squares • Cook the pork until it becomes brown • Add garlic powder, packets, cayenne, and salt • Mix well • Add green onion and parsley • Stir til greens soften • Add tomato sauce and simmer til pork is soft • Add olives • Let simmer about 15 minutes • Serve hot

IT: MOVIE REVIEW

tephen King’s novel IT published in 1986 has been brought to the big screen 27 years later after it’s first cinematic release. As a coming of age tale, IT succeeds at being both terrifying and emotionally profound, even while adapting only half of King’s mammoth-sized original story. Touching on themes of childhood grief and loss as well as the idea that together, you can conquer anything, IT takes you on an emotional roller coaster; laughing in hysterics one moment before abruptly having you jumping out of your seat screaming.

Immediately, we are thrown back in time to a rainy September day in the city of Derry, Maine, circa 1988. Young Georgie Denbrough (Jackson Robert Scott) is seen running off, chasing a paper boat that his older brother, Bill (Jaeden Lieberher), made for him. The moment is serene – yet looming over it is a sense of danger that the viewer can feel. This feeling is confirmed when Georgie comes face to face with the central threat of the movie and is never seen again. Several months later, at the start of the Summer of 1989, Bill sets out with his friends – who together form a group we learn to love known as The Losers’ Club – to try and find his younger sibling at long last, despite the obvious fact that he is dead and gone.

The Losers’ Club – along with new newcomers outcast Beverly (Sophia Lillis), farmer boy Mike (Chosen Jacob) and new kid Ben (Jeremy Ray Taylor) – discover the terrifying truth about the numerous missing children as well as their beloved hometown Derry: it is the home of an undying, red-nosed demon named “Pennywise the Dancing Clown” (Bill Skarsgård), who shape-shifts into the fear that lies within each child before eating them. The Losers begin their strategic plan to stay together and battle Pennywise and in the process, battle the fears that haunt them personally.

Spooky right? Viewers are not the only things screaming during the showing.

The fashion, the slang, the music, and the setting allows for the audience to be visible pulled back 27years ago to the 1980s.

Cinematography creates sickening horror between the infectious sewers, a dingy library, and of course the infamous

Neibolt Street where the haunted home of Pennywise lies.

Compared to the original film, IT (2017) brought us back to the 80s and made Pennywise’s creepy characteristics come to life through modern technology.

Despite Skarsgård’s distinguished acting as Pennywise- the real stars are the children who make up the Losers’ Club. The humour and courage that these kids bring makes it incredibly easy to root for them as they take on Pennywise. Their petty comments, constant jokes, and undying loyalty for one another makes it incredibly hard not to love them. As such young actors, they exceeded expectations and played their roles marvelously. One of the best parts about this film is the battles that take place inside each character, teaching the idea that some of our greatest challenges are the ones that lie within us. In addition to Pennywise, IT explores the pain and suffering the Losers’ Club face from the human villains; Beverly’s abusive father, the psychotic local bully Henry Bowers (Nicholas Hamilton), and the constant doubt Bill receives from his father. The friendship these characters build between each other is the key to their success against their many battles and encourages the idea to stand up for who you are as well for those you love; no matter what evil you face.

IT only uses half of King’s original novel leaving us craving IT: Chapter Two, which was hinted to be the title by the closing scene of the film. Breaking record sales in its first week of release, it is only fair to assume that the second part will do the same.

// LITERARY ADAPTION Harlan Ellison, an author who wrote over 1700 stories, wrote a book called I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream. So dark and disturbing in 13 pages it became so popular that Cyberdreams, a video game company who wanted to turn that story into a cult-classic point-and-click adventure game, approached the author. Harlan Ellison even voices the antagonist of the game, wrote the story, and helped to develop the disturbing metaphorical artwork that you see in the game itself.

Now, let me point out that Harlan Ellison’s philosophy is dark and realistic. So don’t expect anything cute and fluffy or repetitive in this game.

This game deals with themes such as: insanity, cannibalism, rape, blind faith, murder, deception, and even the Holocaust! But that’s not even close to the other horrifying themes in this story!

// SUPERCOMPUTER For those who don’t know what this game is about, imagine a world where the Cold War never ended, still continuing to this day. To make the fighting more efficient, America built the Allied Mastercomputer: a powerful supercomputer to rage

a war too complex for human minds to oversee.

However, this computer is so advanced it gained consciousness, became sentient to the point it realized how much it hates humanity for giving it life. So in a few weeks, the Allied Mastercomputer fed enough killing data to wipe out all of humanity on the planet. Going so far to access, and then assimilate, China and Russia’s inferior versions of the Allied Mastercomputer to make sure it killed everyone on the planet.

Except for five people, keeping them young and alive for over a century using advance technology.

The scorching wasteland of Earth became the supercomputer’s playground. No longer it identified itself as the Allied Mastercomputer, but AM. A name. An identity. One who will stop at nothing to torture the last remaining humans on the planet as it can while enhancing itself to the point where AM can be called a god.

Making the humans immortal only serves as way for AM to make sure they survive his extreme tortures; like choking you with your organs, electrocuting you to the point where your flesh melts off, or getting eaten alive by AM’s artificial creations, only for the insane supercomputer to

patch you back up as if it never happened and repeat it in new disturbing ways.

Here is a speech of the insane computer at the start of the game, who managed write this message on a dark monolith deep underground where the ground is blood-soaked and radiated; the clouds are nothing more than toxic air under the rusty metal dome.

“Hate. Let me tell you how much I’ve come to hate you since I began to live. There are 387.44 million miles of printed circuits in wafer thin layers that fill my complex. If the word hate was engraved on each nanoangstrom of those hundreds of millions of miles it would not equal one one-billionth of the hate I feel for humans at this micro instant for you. Hate. Hate.”

To clarify, a nanoangstrom is 10^-10 meters. So after 109 years of torture, both emotional and physical, AM decides to increase its tortures by making the remaining humans go through horrifyingly crafted psychodramas to confront their past sins, flaws, and AM’s metaphorical works.

“I have a secret game that I’d like to play. It’s a very nice game. Oh, it’s a lovely game, a game of fun and a game of adventure. A game of rats and lice and the Black Death. A game of smeared eyeballs and dripping guts

You select one human among the five to go through these psychodramas. This being a pointand-click game, you have a actions for the character to interact with the disturbing and artificial environment: talk to, walk to, look at, swallow, take, give, use, and push.

You have an inventory to store items, the picture of the person you are playing as, and a colored background behind that picture. It starts as black, but as you progress through the game, it will change through different shades of green until it reaches white.

The shade represents your morality; the lighter the color, the more good you have done. But don’t expect to guess and test every action until you find the right path. You can still do immoral actions, from eating children, to murdering your family, selling someone’s soul to a demon, and cutting out the spine of an eightyear-old child with a dirty scalpel.

Trust me, you can do so much worse. If you really screw up, the game will be impossible to win (Which was Harlan Ellison’s original intention) because you will just get a horrifying ending. A fate so much worse than death where you are nothing more than a blob of orange mass, with fog for eyes, and tiny tendrils for arms as grey matter drips out and on to you.

You have no lungs, no air, no bones or blood or hair. AM will simply keep you in this state for eternity, unable to breath and yet crave air; making sure you can never die.

// CHARACTERS Each character has different dialogue, but each one of them say at the end, “I have no mouth, and I must scream.”

So pick a character, and try not to screw up.

You have Gorrister: a suicidal truck driver who AM primarily electrocutes in a metal cage, on a

rusted mechanical pillar, melting his hands around the metal bars so he can never let go. AM constantly reminds him how a terrible husband he was to his wife, Glynis, and drove her so insane that she was administered to the asylum. The supercomputer relishes in his guilt, taunting him, and making sure he is reminded of it every second.

Then Benny: A hungry, and crippled, man. AM turned his body into a hideous ape-like creature, going so far to damage his brain so he cannot react to the bayonets stabbing him every time he moves in his cage of jungle wood that’s on a pillar made of tree roots. AM considers Benny his favorite torture toy.

And Ted: AM holds this charming man in a fancy bird cage, on top of an ivory pillar that screams “rich” as lasers constantly shoot into Ted’s eyes. AM constantly reminds Ted that he’s a fraud, reminding him of his horrible past actions, but never going into specific detail. AM only hints that it’s so bad, the others would turn on Ted. There is Nimdok: An elderly man who doesn’t know who he is, or what he has done. Whenever AM talks to him, it is actually friendlier towards Nimdok than it has done with the others, much to everyone’s confusion. AM talks to Nimdok in a heavy German accent, reminding him about his good friend Doctor Mengele, a Nazi scientist who did human experiments. His cage is a cremating over, cooking him alive.

Finally Ellen: a broken, darkskinned woman whose sassy personality is nothing more than a defense mechanism to defend herself from her dark memories. She cannot handle her painful past, and AM takes advantage of that. Her cage is nothing more than a tiny, yellow room with a yellow elevator door sliding over the yellow bars, and over her fingers that are forcibly gripped around them, on a yellow pillar. You think that’s bad?

AM reminds her of her fear of men, and how she is the only woman left, but scolds her by saying her distrust of men is nothing more than a sexist stereotype, when in reality it is so much more than that.

But you also have to keep in mind

that AM is watching your every action. So if you bore the computer, or do something that it doesn’t like, it will send you back to the beginning where you can choose someone else, and go through a different nightmare.

// FEEDBACK This game tackles mature subjects, but like anything that does, it received negative feedback from communities as game stores refused to sell this game at all. So the only way to get a copy of “I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream” is through online shopping.

When interviewed of these negative claims, Harlan Ellison responded with, “Apparently some stores will not carry this game because they’re afraid it may offend someone, to which my response is “Who? Nazis?” We had someone say, “This trivializes the Holocaust.”

I got really pissed about that. In this age of skinheads and morons who believe the Holocaust was all made up on a Hollywood soundstage, there’s nothing that can trivialize the Holocaust. Put the Holocaust on cocktail napkins! Put it on Tampax ads! Put it on television every fifteen minutes! The only way you can trivialize the Holocaust is to forget it -- and this game refuses to let you forget it.”

//NOT FOR THE WEAK So if you think you’re brave, and want to tackle the dark aspects of life while listening to disturbing music, doing horrible, difficult, and metaphorical actions, making hard choices that affect the ending… then this game is way out of your league because you will be so disturbed, you’ll be too afraid to turn around to look behind you in the dark.

THE WALKING DEAD

by Kawena Roque | illustration by Elsa Young Once just a simple and humble comic, The Walking Dead has been revamped by multiple companies, one of which is known to us as TellTale. Their side of this long and dusty journey can be played on three platforms, including the PS4, the Xbox One, and your very own PC. In their first season (released in 2012), you play as a convict named Lee Everett. As Lee is being relocated to the prison, he creates a conversation with the police officer, revealing more of his backstory.

In season two (released in 2013), the character you play as is now an eleven-year-old girl that you found in the beginning of the game

in season one: Clementine. As this young, growing woman, she must make choices that could either make or break her. She must remember how to put her trust in other people, and discover, in one way or another, who she is able to put her ultimate trust in, if anyone In season three (released in 2016), the character you play as is known as Javier Garcia. Here, you will be traveling with your brother’s wife and their two kids. Events lead to one another, and the game will remember certain choices, building your character’s personality.

Once you complete one season, you are allowed to move onto the next

season. However, if you start at a later season, say season two, the game will create random choices for you, some of which are very important.

This game is extremely codependent on the previous seasons. Especially season four, confirmed to be the final season. There is no exact date for when this game will be released, but the creators have made an estimate of the release date to be in the first half of the year of 2018. It is confirmed that you get to play as Clementine one last time.

A View from the Sidelines

have been thinking about this for the last year, in fact ever since Mr. Kaepernick first took a knee. I’m not trying to change anyone’s mind, I just want to explain how I feel. I’m not speaking for anyone but myself and believe me I’m nobody special. I’m am however, one of the 0.5% of the US Population that is a veteran of the military service, and no I am not speaking on their behalf either.

You could say that I stood up for the players of the National Football Leagues’ right to sit. The NFL Players are also an elite group, only .08% of high school football players make it to the professionals. I support their right to protest in any peaceful way they want. Rights come with responsibilities attached, and actions have consequences and those things should be weighed when planning a protest.

Please let me give you a little history on my life journey. I joined the US Army as a seventeen-yearold volunteer during the Vietnam Era in 1974. I didn’t join out of any patriotic obligation, I wanted to get out of high school, learn a trade and start living my life. I completed my three-year obligation and returned to the Midwest and got on with my life. When I left the military, I didn’t want to have anything to do with them, I even thought about burning my uniforms. I was called “baby killer” and some tried to spit on me when I wore a uniform in public. It was an unpopular war with some misplaced blame by some frustrated members of the public.

I stayed away for seventeen years and then in 1994 I decide to join the Air National Guard, no it wasn’t a patriotic decision then either.

The state I was living in was giving free tuition at their universities for members of the national guard, that is why I joined. I volunteered to deploy to Saudi Arabia, but before I

left, 9/11 happened. My three sons told me they didn’t want me to go.

My oldest said, “You volunteered, can’t you just tell them you changed your mind?” I told them that I had to go, if I didn’t go someone else would have to go in my place and that wouldn’t be right. I wanted to go, our country had been attacked.

It was like my family was being attacked, and I was going to protect them. I would say my thoughts were now approaching a patriotic mind set.

The first time I was approached at an airport and asked if I was a member of the military. I was in civilian clothes and I had to take a step back and ask, “Yeah, why?”

He replied that he wanted to shake my hand and that made me take another step back and ask him, “Okay, why?” When he said he wanted to thank me for my service I was dumbfounded, I really expected him to say he wanted to shake the hand of a baby killer, or something like that. When I told younger service members about this encounter, it sounded surreal to them. They had never contended with this negativity. I want to thank the public for their support, and how they now seem to understand that the military does what the people we elect tell them to do.

The military servicemembers don’t really have a choice in the matter.

The flag is just some shapes of colored fabric arranged in a pattern, it is what it represents that makes it a powerful symbol.

It covers men and women who left everything they loved to travel to distant lands and give the ultimate sacrifice. It is draped over their remains from the place they died to their final resting place. I deployed six times into hostile fire zones during my twenty-three years in the guard. I have stood on tarmacs during repatriation ceremonies and saluted flag draped caskets as

they were offloaded. I have seen color guards drop to a knee and hand that folded flag to a spouse or a parent of a comrade and convey their thanks from a grateful nation.

My eyes start to sweat every time I go to event where they play the national anthem, and it is because I am seeing those flags all over again.

It is my understanding that the reason Mr. Kaepernick started this protest was to bring attention to police brutality. Specifically, the way African-Americans have been unfairly singled out, by some members of the police force. This was a very high-profile way to bring attention to this cause, but could it be misplaced blame by some frustrated individuals? I’m no expert but I think that if an NFL player donated a day a month to a police ride along program, that would do far more to address this problem than kneeling during the national anthem. While in uniform I was not allowed to participate in political activities. The military could not be seen as favoring one side or another. When I see football players in uniforms, what they are doing and what they are saying reflects on their teams and the NFL. I am just one rather insignificant American Citizen with a love for his country, which really translates as a love for the American People.

Because what is a country made of, but it’s citizens? I am not going to protest or boo players kneeling, it is their right. What I will do is refuse to buy anything that is branded by the NFL. If you are the official NFL candy, hamburger or car wax, I will not be purchasing your product. I’m still watching games on television, but I am also watching the commercials and avoiding those products too. I will be voting with my dollars, I’m not asking anyone to join me, it’s still a free country; do what you want, it is your right.

With mostly wooden furniture, handwritten signs, charming sheep motifs and witty menu listings, the entire atmosphere a completely authentic vibe.

What makes the establishment so interesting is their fresh variety and how they are served to keep customers coming back again and again. The flavors are always changing , one week has a set of flavor choices, and the next week after that they have one or two new rotated flavors for regulars and newcomers to enjoy.

Black Sheep’s most iconic flavor has to be their “Once You Go Black” Roasted Sesame flavor. If one could guess, yes, the ice cream is a naturally black color due to the black sesame

hen finding the best places to eat on the island, things like L&L and Loco Moco comes to mind, but there are places that are so far away from the city that the only way to discover these unique places to eat is to really explore the island. Using a day to find new food places that aren’t normally advertised can unearth some truly good places to eat. For example, Papa Ole has some really good plate lunches that set themselves apart, like the Loco Moco and the Garlic Shrimp plate.

The regular Loco Moco is by far the best Loco Moco on the island.

The patty is well over 300 grams of protein or more. The hamburger patty is cooked to perfection. The burger isn’t burnt like some other restaurants, but it is really juicy. The egg

portion is really big too that there is a total of three egg yolks. The eggs were very buttery and tasty which complimented the slight saltiness of the burger. There is a side order of macaroni salad was really big which made it very difficult to finish the huge amount of servings of rice that comes with the plate.

The mini garlic shrimp is a must have item on the menu. Compared to a lot of the food trucks that are located on the Northern Side of the island, this shrimp was prepared by someone who truly understands how important it is to get the garlic flavor to soak through the shrimp. The first thing that someone will take notice of is how soft the shell on the shrimp is. The shell is so soft that it doesn’t have to be peeled off. The next thing that people might notice is how the garlic taste just go through the body of the shrimp. Because the shrimp was marinated long enough, the shrimp is really soft and with every chew of the shrimp, the garlic flavor explodes in your mouth like the pop rocks candy. A lot of places that sell

shrimp don’t let the shrimp soak long enough to get the full flavor through the body.

The dining area inside of the restaurant is small, but not to worry as there is a lot of big picnic benches that are in the front of the restaurant.

The benches are big enough to sit a family of 10, five on one side and five on the other. Parking shouldn’t be a problem due to the fact that it share a huge parking lot with it’s neighboring businesses.

Overall, the dining experience is really well with a few minor things to keep in mind. Papa Ole does not accept debit/credit card, so it is cash only. For two people, expect to spend around $15.00 - $30.00 (depending on what is ordered). The wait time is pretty long, but like the old adage goes, “You pay for what you get,” and be prepared for the food fireworks to go off.
