1868 Tutor Revival Daniel J.T.W. Jennings

The Horse Barn was originally built in 1868 in the Tudor Revival style. The architect, Daniels JTW Jennings, designed the space to be a multipurpose barn to work with nearby fields. Today, the Horse Barn is the last wooden structure located on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus and as of 1974, is a registered historical site. Jennings later completed extensive renovations to the site in 1899. During this time, $12,000 was invested into the Horse Barn to transform it into a medieval-inspired structure with a Neo-Tudor touch.

Some of the most notable stylistic elements of the horse barn include a gabled porch supported by ionic columns, original window openings, and half-timbered gables. In time, architectural elements, such as the roof dormers, and decorative bargeboards along the gable ends have been dismantled. Despite losing some of its historic character, the Horse Barn is still regarded as one of the most beloved historical sites on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus.

Concept Statement re:root Re: root Wellness Center is UW-Madison’s newest student center located in the historic Horse Barn on campus. This rejuvenating space welcomes students with compassion

The design of re: root offers opportunities for user choice

and

a

sense

of

community,

while

also

providing students a unique place for escapism that many desire.

Re: root symbolizes the fundamental role of a plant root, providing stability

and

nourishment

to

the

plant while encouraging strength and growth. The name, Re: root, of

the

celebrates the deeply rooted legacy Horse

in

the

history

of

UW-

Madison's Campus, as well as the Center’s mission of guiding students in their personal growth through restoration and exploration.

The third level and fourth level loft contain the social lounge, and zoom rooms meant to encourage growth and exploration in the hobbies, interests, and welfare of students. The green studio is an immersive maker space that takes advantage of the barn's dramatic roofline and unique truss system. The zoning of the social lounge allows for a variety of seating and activities to promote socialization and community.

The second level contains all counseling spaces, including pet therapy spaces, group counseling spaces, and individual counseling spaces. This variety helps students in need get the stabilizing help they require in a matter that feels comfortable to them.

Nourishment

level 1

The first level contains the wellness cafe and retail space, which will provide nourishment to the mind, as well as the body. The re: root cafe is designed to combat disordered eating habits and beliefs by promoting a realistic and healthy relationship with food. In connection, the retail space will sell take-home versions of the meals, so students can cook and enjoy them on their own.
