We’ve asked them to share how they came to call our mountain town home, as well as insider tips for travelers looking to experience the best of the Flathead Valley. Growing up in Spokane, Washington gave me a great appreciation for the outdoors, so I took a year off and followed my love for skiing, taking a job on a whim as a ski instructor on Big Mountain. After a season here, I quickly realized I wanted to make this beautiful place my forever home, so after finishing grad school in Seattle, I found my way back to Montana and am now working as a dentist in Kalispell.

In addition to skiing, I fill my time off with backpacking, mountain biking and river trips.

To experience the best of Kalispell, I highly recommend grabbing your hiking shoes or a mountain bike to hit the trails of Lone Pine State Park or Herron Park. After working up an appetite, it’s worth heading to Moose’s Saloon to plan the next day’s adventure over some sauerkraut pizza!

My family moved to Kalispell from Los Angeles when I was a kid and I grew up back and forth between Montana and California. I got into murals as a kid doing graffiti and I’m proud to have painted some walls in downtown Kalispell that added some color and engaged the community.

Summertime is great for floating the river, exploring the mountains, attending pow wows on the Indian reservations and visiting Glacier National Park. A drive around Flathead Lake is always picturesque; I also like to check out the pictographs in Kila. Flathead Lake also has pictographs at Painted Rocks, which is only accessible by boat. Wild Horse Island is another cool feature.

I enjoy walking along the north shore of Flathead Lake by Somers. There is also the north shore near Bigfork that has a bird sanctuary that’s open part of the year and is a great place to collect driftwood.

As a young man, l enlisted in the U.S. Armed Forces. I ended up in seven foreign countries and have seen all but nine of the United States and this is it. I could have chosen any place in the world and I picked Kalispell. Being born and raised in the mountains, I just couldn’t stay away. I’m a fourth-generation Montanan and spent 33 years outfitting in the Swan Valley and Bob Marshall Wilderness before starting Artemis Acres 30 years ago with my wife.

I don’t do as much as I used to, but I do a little bit of everything at the ranch and I probably have the best lifestyle of anybody. What I’d like people to know is, get outdoors!

HIKING You don’t have to go far from Kalispell to find trails that will lead you to wildlife, wildflowers, jaw-dropping views and memorable Montana moments. There are miles of trails to explore, ranging from casual afternoon walks to grueling climbs and jaw-dropping mountain peaks. Glacier National Park steals the spotlight with 734 miles of trails and glacial-carved scenery, but there are many other areas that have equally spectacular hiking routes. Less than 15 minutes from downtown Kalispell you’ll find Lone Pine State Park and Foy’s to Blacktail Trails, both of which offer easily accessible hikes with gorgeous views. A few other areas of note: Jewel Basin in the Flathead National Forest, Swan River Nature Trail in Bigfork and Columbia Mountain, with all having a variety of terrain and stunning views.

SCENIC RIDES AND DRIVES Whether your preferred mode of transportation is bicycle, motorcycle or car, a scenic ride takes on a whole new meaning in northwest Montana.

Everywhere you look there are mountains soaring to the sky, the clearest of waters in lakes and rivers and lush forests, with pastoral farmland in between. The iconic Goingto-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park is among the most famous scenic rides in the world. Open in its entirety

during the summer months, this winding road takes passengers up, over and through some of the most soul-stirring terrain found anywhere. Other favorite backroads are the Seeley-Swan Scenic Drive (U.S. Highway 83),

Hungry Horse Reservoir (which provides a perfect backdrop for adventurous bikers off U.S. Highway 2) and the two-hour loop tour around Flathead Lake on U.S. Highway 93 and Montana Highway 35.

WATER SPORTS If there’s a theme to summer in the Flathead Valley, it’s water.

Flathead Lake offers the full array of flatwater fun — swimming, skiing, canoeing, sailing, fishing, paddleboarding and power boating. If it takes place on the water, you can do it here.

And Flathead isn’t the only lake.

A short trip west will take you to the Thompson Chain of Lakes and Lake Koocanusa, while Glacier National Park’s Lake McDonald is great for a paddle or boat tour. To the north, you’ll discover beautiful Whitefish Lake, while Swan Lake sits to the southeast. That’s just the start, as there are dozens of lakes you can drive to and play on around Kalispell. If moving water is more your speed, there’s ample opportunity for that, too.

The various forks of the Flathead River offer hundreds of miles for floating, fishing and rafting, from serenely mild to whitewater wild.

BIKING Whether you enjoy rushing down a narrow dirt track or prefer a flatter ride, there are several award-winning mountain bike and road bike trails in the Flathead Valley. Foy’s to Blacktail Trails is a well-signed network of single-track trails

covering 440 acres along a forested drainage just a few minutes from downtown Kalispell. Road bikers looking for a challenge should be sure to hit the Going-to-the-Sun Road, particularly in the spring when the road is closed to vehicle traffic.

And for a family-friendly option on mostly level terrain, the Rails to Trails system has paved more than 20 miles of Great Northern Railway tracks around Kalispell, from Somers to Kila.

WINTER A mountain town rich in culture, Kalispell knows how to winter. Skiing tends to take the spotlight when the snow falls, with 300+ annual inches of powder that blankets the surrounding mountains and creates ideal terrain for snowboarders and skiers at Whitefish Mountain

Resort and Blacktail Mountain Ski Area. Kalispell also offers abundant off-slope ski adventures like winter kayaking, dog sledding, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Nearby Glacier National Park has trails (including the Going-to-the-Sun Road) that offer cross-country skiers and snowshoers views of the park that not many get to see. Past and Present Collide in Downtown Embedded in history and filled with vibrant shops, local boutiques, restaurants, art galleries and more, the heartbeat of Kalispell can be found in its downtown. This picturesque corridor beautifully combines touches from the past with modern offerings in a charming, walkable setting.

Adorned with welcoming storefronts from the early 1900s, shopping in downtown Kalispell may feel like you’re walking through the past, complete with an old-fashioned soda fountain, a historic hotel and a bike shop that is more than 100 years old. But in a place like this, those touches of history are coupled with stores that sell clothing, outdoor gear, jewelry, home décor and art, as well as galleries, craft breweries, coffee shops, bakeries, mouth-watering restaurants and watering holes that keep downtown hopping into the evening.

And while local shops are a perfect backdrop for a leisurely stroll, downtown also boasts a variety

of wellness offerings, including spas, fitness studios and shops like Sage & Cedar, where guests can create customizable fragrances and essential oils inspired by Montana.

As you stroll the streets of downtown (be sure to wander off Main Street), you’ll quickly notice that century-old buildings and traditions — including wide, tree-lined avenues and Victorian-style houses — are well-rooted in this mountain town. Dive into the historical aspects of Kalispell with a visit to the Conrad Mansion Museum, the Hockaday Museum of Art, the Northwest Montana History Museum and the Kalispell Grand Hotel. Along the way, you’ll see street art in the form of murals, with each telling an important story of Montana.

SMOOTH SAILING ON

Flathead Lake

W

hile Glacier National Park has been an iconic place for millennia, there is another natural attraction that sets this area apart.

Located just minutes from downtown Kalispell, Flathead Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake in the western United States.

The pristine body of water is 28 miles long, 15 miles wide, and has 187 miles of shoreline dotted with accessible state parks, secluded beaches and small communities. There are more than a dozen islands in the lake, including the largest, Wild Horse Island, a state park, named for the free-roaming horses that call it home.

Flathead Lake is a remnant of Glacial Lake Missoula, a massive body of water created by ice dams that once covered much of western Montana some 15,000 years ago. When those ice dams broke, water rushed across the Inland Northwest in a series of catastrophic floods that shaped much of the region’s geography and carved out the Columbia River Gorge between Washington and Oregon.

Today, the waters are much tamer, controlled

by the Seli’š Ksanka Qlispe’ Dam near Polson.

The dam is owned and controlled by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes.

One of the best ways to take in the wonders of Flathead Lake is to take a drive around it. Starting in Kalispell, head south on U.S. Highway 93 along the west shore of the lake, stopping to take in the sights in the communities of Somers and Lakeside. The west shore features two state parks, West Shore and Big Arm, and both are great for hiking, camping and fishing. At Polson, take a left and head back north on Montana Highway 35. While the topography of the west shore is dominated by rolling grasslands, the east shore is more rugged and forested.

The soil in this area is perfect for agriculture and you’ll spot numerous cherry and fruit orchards along Flathead Lake. Keep your eyes peeled for roadside cherry stands during the harvest, which is usually in July and August.

The east shore features three more state parks — Finley Point, Yellow Bay and Wayfarers — all perfect places to take in the sunset before heading back to Kalispell.

National Park

A YEAR-ROUND DESTINATION “The scenery is wonderfully grand, the mountains high and remarkably bold.

Someday it will be a great resort for travelers.” —George Bird Grinnell.

When George Bird Grinnell wrote that in the pages of Forest and Stream, the mountains that would someday be part of Glacier National Park were still a rugged and remote wilderness in the northwest corner of the Montana Territory. Grinnell, long considered the “father” of Glacier, first came to the area in 1885 — four years before Montana became a state — and quickly became one of the most vocal proponents for its preservation. In 1910, Glacier National Park became the 10th such preserve and since then it has been wowing visitors from around the world, regardless of season, much the same way it did for Grinnell some 135 years ago.

SPRING

Springtime is when Glacier Park emerges from its winter slumber. While many interior trails are still snow-covered, those in lower elevations become accessible in April and May (be sure to bring an extra pair of socks because the trails may be muddy). Spring is also when plowing on the iconic Going-to-the-Sun Road begins. The west side of the road is open to non-motorized access and biking the Sun Road has become a popular spring pastime.

SUMMER

Summer is the most popular season in Glacier Park and for good reason: the snow has melted, the sun is shining and hundreds of miles of trail are open for exploration.

The Going-to-the-Sun Road is usually open by early July, providing great access into the interior of the park. The park’s legendary lodges, chalets and guided experiences are also open; be sure to make a reservation early as they quickly fill to capacity.

FALL

Fall is often called the local’s season in Glacier National Park as the summer crowds are gone but the park is still open for hiking, biking and camping. In early October, fall foliage ignites the mountains in golden hues and the cooler weather is great for exploring and wildlife watching. During autumn, the park also reverts back to its more rustic state and services and amenities are rolled back. While visitors should always be prepared for anything when venturing into the park, it’s especially true in the off-season.

WINTER

Winter in Glacier National Park is a season unlike any other and with massive amounts of snowfall, the park becomes a more primitive destination. With a little effort, visitors can be rewarded with unforgettable scenery and solitude.

The west side of the park is usually open to Apgar/ Lake McDonald and Lake McDonald Lodge, where stunning views of the Livingston Range can be had.

Winter is a great time to strap on some snowshoes and explore snow-covered trails. But again, visitors should be prepared for anything and bring extra clothing, food and water.

The locations of the murals vary, from a longtime cafe with more than 100 years of history in the valley to the half-block long wall of a historic brewery. The murals are bold, colorful and diverse, with each telling an important story of Montana, the Flathead Valley and Kalispell. With murals and paintings that are located both indoors and outdoors, taking a self-guided tour is an ideal year-round activity and a great way to explore the various areas of downtown. KALICO Art Center on Main Street is a welcoming and contemporary space for all ages

The Hockaday Museum of Art is a central piece of northwest Montana culture. Housed in a turnof-the-century Carnegie Library building that’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Hockaday has a permanent Crown of the Continent collection as well as rotating exhibits by nationally renowned and emerging artists.

Their permanent collection includes beloved artists like Charles M. Russell and O.C. Seltzer.

Located in downtown, Montana Modern Fine Art displays the work of multiple contemporary Montana artists and their diverse selection includes original work on canvas, paper and sculptures. They also offer workshops and a studio space.

LIVE THEATER For 61 years the Bigfork Summer Playhouse has been providing quality summer stock theater and has launched careers for many, the most notable being J.K. Simmons. Their season runs from midMay to early September, with performances a few times each week.

The Alpine Theatre Project, located in nearby Whitefish and founded by Broadway veterans, hosts a wide array of performances each year during the summer season. KEEPING IT REAL SINCE CHARLES E. CONRAD We’ve got to hand it to Charles E. Conrad, Kalispell’s founder — he knew a good thing when he saw it. And while it looks different than it did in the late 1800s, the potential that Conrad saw has come to life and today Kalispell is a mountain town with beautifully historic roots, a vibrant downtown and plenty of things to do. Immersed in history and filled with locally owned shops and boutiques, restaurants, art galleries and more, downtown Kalispell beautifully combines touches from the past with modern offerings in a charming setting. The downtown core includes a nod to Kalispell’s love affair with beer that dates back to the first pint that was brewed in 1894 by Kalispell Malting and Brewing Company, and it’s now home to three breweries.

This modern-day mountain town was established in 1891 and Conrad built a beautiful Victorian-style home for his family in 1895. Today, the Conrad Mansion Museum takes visitors into the life of the Conrad family, with docent-led or self-guided tours showcasing what life was like in

the Flathead Valley more than 100 years ago. The museum has kept over 90% of the original fixtures, furniture and clothing of the Conrad family in its 26 rooms, including Edison light bulbs, a first-generation automatic dishwasher and other custom-build offerings.

Housed in the 1894 Central School building, the Northwest Montana History Museum has permanent exhibits that introduce visitors to the rich history of the region. Take time to peruse the museum’s 22,000 square feet of space and meander through exhibitions that share stories of Montana’s First Nations who ventured here by land and water more than 10,000 years ago. Whether you’re interested in the history of Montana’s earliest residents or if you’re ready to learn more about how homesteaders made this valley into one of the state’s most fertile regions, the Northwest Montana History Museum is the perfect place to start. TOP 5 Hikes Within an Hour of Kalispell 1. LONE PINE STATE PARK. A short 10 minutes from downtown, Lone Pine has sweeping views of the Flathead Valley and more than 7 miles of hiking trails.

2. FOY’S TO BLACKTAIL TRAIL SYSTEM. With trails ranging from 1 to 18 miles in length, this multi-use area is a favorite spot for families to enjoy a nature walk, as well as hikers, single track mountain bikers and horseback riders. Plus, it’s only 10 minutes from downtown.

3. RAILS TO TRAILS. The former tracks for the Great Northern Railroad have been converted to paved recreational trails around Kalispell. Today, the trails stretch from the north shore of Flathead Lake west to

Kila and border the Smith Lake Waterfowl Protection Area.

4. BIRCH LAKE. A relatively easy hike with an initial elevation gain, this trail in the Jewel Basin takes you to sweeping views, wildflower-filled meadows, good trout fishing and cold-water swimming.

5. CYCLONE LOOKOUT. Less-traveled and moderately difficult, this hike has a series of gentle switchbacks through a lodgepole forest that lead to a fire lookout. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with 360-degree views of the Flathead Valley and Whitefish Range.

1. CROSS-COUNTRY SKI. Glacier National Park may be famed for its towering crags, but you’ll find plenty of flat land and velvety snow that’s perfect for cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. Explore the trails around Lake McDonald, venture out on the Going-to-theSun Road or check out the trails in the Flathead National Forest.

2. DOG SLEDDING. If you love dogs and are looking for a winter wonderland experience crossing forested terrain and frozen lakes, try dog sledding. It’s the perfect activity to include everyone in the family, from babies to grandparents.

TOP 5 Ways to Play in the Water 1. KAYAK OR PADDLEBOARD. With 500 pristine lakes in northwest Montana, there are plenty of front-row views for sunsets, as well as ample opportunities to spot wildlife, eagles, osprey and loons along the shoreline.

Local favorites include Foy’s Lake, Swan Lake and Flathead Lake, with rentals available at Rocky Mountain Outfitter, Sportsman & Ski Haus or Sea Me Paddle.

2. FLOAT THE RIVER. Popular floats include a stretch of the Flathead River that goes from the Tea Kettle Fishing Access Site near Columbia Falls to the Old Steel Bridge in Kalispell. The nice and easy current makes for a peaceful day of floating.

No fruit is more prized in Montana than the wild huckleberry. From mid-July to September, huckleberry hunters flock to their favorite mountainside berry patches in search of the delicious purple gems. Seasoned huckleberry pickers may be reluctant to share the location of their secret patches, but the berries can often be found along popular hiking trails. Good places to look are the Danny On Trail at Whitefish Mountain Resort, Jewel Basin Hiking Area and trails around Hungry Horse Reservoir. Bears like berries too, so stay alert and make plenty of noise to reduce the chance of surprising any who might be grazing nearby. If you’d like to sample the berries but would rather let someone else do the picking, you’ll find tasty huckleberry creations at local restaurants, bakeries, breweries, and distilleries ranging from pastries and ice creams to barbecue sauce and beer. You may also find them at roadside fruit stands.

Montana might be famous for its huckleberries, but the Flathead Lake region is actually better known for its cherry crop. Despite being worldfamous, the pleasantly sweet and very juicy Flathead cherry is not actually its own species and farmers around Flathead Lake grow Lapins, Sweetheart, Rainier, Van, Stella, Lambert and Skeena cherries. And while many have speculated what makes these cherries so special, it’s the mild lake-influenced climate, pure waters and fertile soil that make Flathead cherries the most flavorful on earth. Harvest runs from mid-July through mid- August, and cherries are available at roadside stands along Flathead Lake or at local farmers markets. You can also harvest your own cherries at one of the many U-Pick orchards around the lake.

Kalispell is a four-season destination that sits at an elevation of 2,956 feet (900 meters). One of the best ways to enjoy your trip to Kalispell is to be sure your bag is packed for the time of year you’re visiting, playing and exploring under Montana’s big blue sky.

With distinct weather for each season, the clothing you bring is an integral part of your trip. To be as prepared as possible, here are packing recommendations.

WINTER. The secret to enjoying winter is being prepared for cold temperatures, snow and ice. Bring sturdy and warm boots, jackets, wool socks and sweaters, along with gloves and hats. Don’t let the cold fool you; you’ll still need SPF, sunglasses and lip balm.

SPRING. An unpredictable weather season, spring can include warm days, cool nights and lateseason storms. Layers are recommended, from thick flannel shirts to short-sleeve active wear.

Don’t forget a beanie, packable down jacket and sunglasses.

SUMMER. The long days offer temps in the 70s, 80s and 90s, but nights cool down so you’ll want some cozy layers. Must-haves include hats for sun, water shoes, hiking boots and lots of SPF. Montana’s climate is dry so pack a reusable water bottle to keep hydrated.

CONSERVATION EASEMENTS OFFER A UNIQUE SOLUTION TO MAINTAINING PUBLIC ACCESS A century ago, lumber companies were among the largest landowners in the West and they came up with a simple solution for those who wanted to access their land for hunting and fishing: if you respect the land and leave it as you found it, you can use it as you please. The deal between private companies and public users was in place so long that most people almost came to think of the private land as public; just another piece of paradise available for exploration that is the buffet of Montana’s wideopen spaces.

But then in the 1970s something started happening across western Montana. As more people discovered the region’s scenic wonders — and some of them moved here — timber companies began to sell off their massive landholdings for development.

Conservationists began to worry that pieces of land that make this area so special would be developed or become inaccessible, a bad deal for both the public that likes to enjoy it and the wildlife that calls it home. So they found a solution: conservation easements.

Instead of selling the land for development, private landowners can work with government entities or non-profits to voluntarily enter into a legal agreement that limits certain uses of the land in order to protect its conservation values. Under an easement, the land remains privately owned and can still be managed as it was historically, which supports forestry, open space, and economic opportunities for local communities, while also oftentimes ensuring permanent public access for hunting, fishing, and

“These easements protect wildlife habitat and public access,” says Kris Tempel, a habitat conservation biologist for Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks who works on the easements. Conserving open, working lands and wildlife habitat through conservation easements is fundamental to FWP’s role in stewarding the public’s fish and wildlife resources.”

Northwest Montana is home to numerous notable conservation easements that provide public recreational access and conserve open space, Tempel says.

One of the first large easements in the area was a deal with Plum Creek Timber in the early 2000s to protect about 142,000 acres in the area of the Thompson and Fisher river valleys west of Kalispell. This land was prime low elevation range for moose and elk where they spend the winter months escaping the cold and snow of the mountains.

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks utilizes something called the Habitat Montana Program to fund these public-private land conservation efforts. The program was the result of legislation passed in 1987 and that law allows a portion of the revenue made from big game hunting licenses to go towards conservation efforts. In recent years, larger amounts of land in northwest Montana have been protected with conservation easements and Tempel says even more could be protected in the future.

“It’s so important to protect these habitats not just for fish and wildlife but also for the public,” Tempel says. “We want to make sure these places are protected for future generations.”

There are tens of millions of acres of public and protected land in Montana — huge swaths of it located just minutes away from Kalispell — meaning there is plenty to see and explore.

REDEVELOPMENT The adage, “out with the old, in with the new” is often used when talking about growth, progress, and making changes, but here in Kalispell we’re planning to keep the evidence of our historic, humble roots side by side with new developments and 21st-Century amenities.

Kalispell was the main line for the Great Northern Railway, which was established when the town was first platted in 1891. By 1904, Kalispell had become the trade center for the Flathead Valley, and while the railroad was moved north to Whitefish that year, Kalispell had established itself on its journey toward becoming what we know the city to be now – the urban center of the Flathead – where retail, healthcare, education, government, events, and more are centered and thrive.

Although the main route of the Great Northern Railway was moved to the north, the railroad maintained a constant presence through the heart

of the city for decades, serving private businesses and occasional passenger routes. Nearly 20 years ago, as rail-served businesses began to grow and expand out of the downtown core of Kalispell, community leaders began coming together to establish a vision for the vibrant city.

In 2015, the City of Kalispell was awarded a $10M federal TIGER grant which spurred the work on a $21M redevelopment project to remove the rails that bisected Kalispell’s core and replace them with a linear park. Named the Kalispell Core and Rail Redevelopment Project, the vision was to establish a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly, mixed-use neighborhood with retail, residential, entertainment, and cultural amenities focus.

Over the course of the last several years more than 40 acres have become available for redevelopment along the newly-named Parkline Trail, which is on track to be completed at the surface level from end-to-end later this year.

Home to Northwest Montana’s only higher-ed institution, Flathead Valley Community College, one of the highest-performing public school districts in the state, and several private school offerings, Kalispell is the educational epicenter of the Flathead Valley. Reinvesting in education has positively impacted nearly every school and every student in Kalispell. $54 Million has been spent by Kalispell Public Schools to build a sixth elementary school and significantly update the existing five elementary schools, Kalispell Middle School, both high schools, Linderman Education Center, the H.E. Robinson Agricultural Center, and Legend’s Field.

Additionally, Flathead Valley Community College has recently seen the addition of the Broussard Library and Learning Commons, new on-campus housing, and is currently under construction with the Wachholz College Center, which includes a fitness center, gymnasium, event space, performing arts education, and a performance and lecture hall.
