Sharla is a reverent, 40-something woman in a precarious condition. She has recently cared for her deceased husband Charlie in a hospice arrangement at home, and, within months, she faced the death of her mother Carlotta. Owing to traumatic events 20 years earlier with her father Frank, Sharla had been estranged from both parents. Yet, she ventures to their remote home in the coastal hills above Santa Barbara to locate a singular object, an engraving of the Virgin Mary, which she hopes will provide life-saving power in her fight against stage-four cancer. Sharla makes this journey with Korie, a 20-something Black man, who served as a caregiver to her husband. Korie, a closeted gay, has recently been dumped by his truth-telling lover Reggie. Together, they arrive at the hilltop residence known as Angels Ladder to locate and quickly leave with the religious artwork. Little do they know that this land, sacred ground to the former indigenous people, is haunted by the ghost of a vengeful shaman who was brutally murdered there centuries past. Friar, a 30-something Franciscan monk, seeks to warn Sharla upon her arrival. He has become captivated by the history of the land, in part, owing to a predecessor’sguilt. But Friar, for all his effort, cannot prevent the devastation that soon will occur.
