Thesis Dr. Kim Project Description

At the intersection of West Broadway and North Stadium bulivard, in the heart of Columbia, Missouri, stands the site of this project. The goal is to merge urban living with community vitality. This proposal transforms the intersection into a dynamic private/ public neighborhood that blends modern amenities with a harmonious natural enviroment. The vision is to design an inclusive space for all ages, fostering a sense of community and well-being. It aims to provide a balance between work, recreation, and relaxation, creating an oasis in the midst of urban life.

Studio IV Dr. Kim Project Description The Downtown Columbia Art Gallery is an innovative contemporary art venue situated near the University of Missouri campus, aimed at featuring both emerging and established artists within an engaging and easily accessible setting. This gallery is thoughtfully designed to accommodate temporary and permanent exhibitions, a variety of events, and enriching workshops. Its purpose is to serve as a dynamic platform, inviting active participation in the arts for students, faculty, and the broader Columbia community, fostering a sense of connection and interaction through artistic experiences.

Downtown Columbia Art Gallery is a contemporary art space located adjacent to the University of Missouri’s campus, designed to showcase emerging and established artists in a vibrant and accessible setting. The gallery will host temporary and permanent exhibitions, events, and workshops. This space will provide a platform for students, faculty, and the wider community of Columbia to engage in art.

3. Pedestrian-Friendly Design: Students and Columbia residents swarm the district everyday. To reduce traffic congestion, there is a tall overhang on the west side of the structure that is adjacent to campus and will make the walking space feel larger. Multiple entry points surrounding the building will attract patrons coming from different directions of downtown.

2. Limited Space: There is limited space on the site, to combat this issue there had to be an innovative design and adding various balcony and green roof spaces to maximize the available space while maintaining the aesthetic value of campus and downtown.

1. Historical Preservation: Downtown Columbia and Campus both have historical significance and it is important to keep that alive. It was essential to maintain the architectural design of surrounding buildings.

The gallery will feature a modern and flexible design, with white walls, high ceilings in the lobby and atrium, and a minimalistic aesthetic to showcase the art to its best advantage. The space will be divided into several galleries of varying sizes, providing a range of display options for different types of artwork. When entering the space you will be swarmed with a welcoming and accessible feel, with comfortable seating areas, loads of natural light, and plenty of room for visitors to move around and interact with the art.

The gallery will also have a cafe and a gift shop, providing additional amenities for visitors.
