KALEB DUARTE

PORTFOLIO 2024

HI! I’M KALEB.

As a multidisciplinary artist from Columbus, Ohio, I’ve adopted the urban fabric of my hometown as a template for addressing some of the most complex and deeply rooted issues of the built environment.

Through artistic expression, I’ve explored space, grammar, and emotion as inspiration for my work. Every work I make starts with a question

In this portfolio, you’ll explore a wide breadth of my professional and artistic endeavors, ranging from my architectural studio, animation and rendering techniques, photography, my work as a BIM coordinator using Autodesk Revit and as a student researching design and additive manufacturing.

I’m currently a UG1 studying architecture at the Knowlton School at The Ohio State University, with minors in Environment, Economics, Development, and Sustainability as well as Comparative Studies.

THICKENED GROUND

How can a space be both alien and familiar?

The synthesis model asks this through a series of juxtapositions: Earthen yet strange. Organic yet otherworldly. As though carved from the earth, the thickened ground evokes an uncanny sense of familiarity, perhaps reminiscent of the

arch-like geological formations found in the ancient deserts of the American West. Using a subtractive modeling technique, the resulting caves and cantilevers relieved from the thick cardboard allow for infinite unique spaces of contemplation, forcing its inhabitants to reconcile with the scale and magnitude of the formation.

3D DIAGRAMMATIC REPRESENTATION

The Cook County Correctional Facility is one of the largest prisons in the United States.

How might architecture serve as a symbol of healing and reclamation?

The year is 1995.

Chicago’s deadliest heatwave will claim 739 lives; a figure that disproportionately impacted senior citizens, the homeless, and low-income residents.

Latinos, on the other hand, only accounted for 19, or 2% of the deaths. The answer to this mystery lies not in genetic makeup or coincidental circumstance, but the very concept of Latinidad (latino-ness) that influenced their built environment. It was communidad--community--that naturally kept them outside of sweltering homes onto lake-effect breezes, aguas frescas in the street (shaved ice), and neighborly conversation to pass the heatwave.

In the end, Latinidad saved their lives.

Through architecture, we reflect on this resilience.

Tangential circles; nuestra comunidad--our community--indistinguishable, unique, strong.

The property line of Cook County Prison; a violent disruption of the Latino story.

Mexica and Mayan shape language of the mesoamerican pyramids suggest the top of the temple is holy. By flipping this narrative, the land we walk on is sacred: It is ours.

COOK COUNTY PRISON, NOW

EMPTY LOT (PROJECT SITE)

The Cook County Prison is located at the heart of La Villita (Little Village), Chicago’s largest and oldest Mexican neighborhood.

Used as a tool to inflict state violence, it served as the perfect site to display textbook Chicano resistance to hegemonic rule.

OUTLINING THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT

How might different scales of the built environment portray a distinct narrative about the history of Columbus’ neighborhoods?

Through a series of z studies of the built environment, I was able to identity relationships between typology, neighborhoods, and infrastructure.

NECKO, a University District neighborhood, was the subject of my study.

What if your character was an inanimate object? The wacky concept animation FRAGILE: THIS SIDE UP expands on this through ambitious pace, vertigo-inducing camera angles, and a plot-driving jazz tune.

Originally a series of stills, FRAGILE: THIS SIDE UP proved to be my first dive into formal animation.
