LIGHTING TECHNOLOGY

Artificial lighting technology began to be developed tens of thousands of years ago and continues to be refined in the present day.

HISTORY OF LAMPS

The history of lamps spans millennia, evolving from simple fuel-based illuminators to complex electrical systems. Early lamps, dating back 70,000 years, utilized natural materials like moss soaked in animal fat for light. Over time, humans began to craft more sophisticated lamps from pottery, alabaster, and metal, incorporating wicks for better control of the flame. The Greeks introduced terracotta lamps in the 7th century BC, and the invention of gas and electric lighting in the 18th and 19th centuries revolutionized the lighting world.

EARLY FORMS OF LIGHTING

• Natural Illumination

Before the invention of artificial light, humans relied on natural sources like the sun and fire.

• Stone and Shell Lamps

Early lamps were made from hollowed-out stones or shells filled with flammable materials like moss or animal fat.

• Oil Lamps

As civilization advanced, oil lamps became common, using materials like olive oil, sesame oil, and animal fats as fuel.

• Terracotta Lamps

The Greeks were known for their terracotta lamps, which replaced handheld torches and provided a more stationary source of light.

• Wicks

The addition of wicks allowed for better control of the flame, making lamps more efficient and longer-lasting.

LIGHTING THROUGH THE AGES

■ THE DAWN OF GAS LIGHTING

• William Murdoch’s Experiments

In the late 18th century, William Murdoch experimented with coal gas as a lighting source, paving the way for gas lamps.

• Gas Fixtures

By the 19th century, cities across Europe and the United States began to implement gas lighting, transforming urban landscapes.

• Gas Lamps

Gas lamps provided a brighter and more controllable source of light than oil lamps, becoming a popular alternative for both indoor and outdoor illumination.

■ THE ELECTRIC REVOLUTION

• Humphry Davy’s Contributions

Sir Humphry Davy’s experiments with electricity in the early 19th century led to the development of the first incandescent lamp and arc lamp.

• Edison and the Light Bulb

Thomas Edison’s invention of the incandescent light bulb in 1879 revolutionized lighting, making it more efficient, affordable, and widespread.

• Electric Lighting Takes Over

Electric lighting gradually replaced gas and kerosene lamps, transforming homes and public spaces.

■ THE MODERN LIGHTING TECHNOLOGIES

Over the years, various types of electric lamps have been developed, including fluorescent, LED, and other energy-efficient options.
