Fukuoka, capital of Fukuoka Prefecture, sits on the northern shore of Japan’s Kyushu Island. Fukuoka is the fastest growing city in the country, and has the highest proportion of young people. The city comprises of number of multinational corporation and budding start-ups as well. The city is assumed to take over Tokyo, the city IT Parks in the coming years.

The city is blessed with natural scapes as well and provides a solemn place for the construction of a contemplation village.

The site is strategically selected in the core of the city for easy accessibility and convenience. The area is surrounded by tall trees and presence of water body near the complex makes it an ideal site for mental and spiritual healing.

Since the site is located in a park, creating spaces that are open and accessible to all is the priority

“The continuing and spreading results of an event or action” - The Ripple Effect Inspired by the ripples created in water, this 5500 sqm resort is designed to give the customers an ongoing meditational experience as they move vertically and horizontally through the complex via a series of indoor and outdoor spaces.

The name of this resort “ Jhāna” comes from Buddhism.

It is the training of the mind, commonly translated as meditation, to withdraw the mind from the automatic responses to sense-impressions, leading to a “state of

perfect equanimity and awareness.”

Moving from the center of the atrium towards the interiors of each space, the concrete walls become darker, light travels less, preparing the guests to enter the serenity of the treatment rooms.

The ground level begins with an entry to the reception and lounge area of 30sqm (about the area of a parking space) overlooking the outdoor pond and tea rooms. The atrium in the centre is open to sky and serves as an indoor/outdoor area for people while they wait for their treatment.

This space is strategically placed in the centre and creates a void space on all levels. Giving guests an opportunity to pause and look at a beautiful space while they go up the elevators or use the stairs to access the various levels of the healing space. The indoor garden in the atrium provides a space for guests to sit within the trees and contemplate.

As guests move from the ground to the second level, they enter the indoor mediation areas of the structure. Moving from the naturally lit atrium to the mediation rooms, they are taken through concentric circles where the core of the circle is the brightest with natural light, leading to the pathways that are slightly darker, and finally to the actual meditation rooms which are dimly lit with indirect lighting.

Common meditation hall

The drop ceilings with domes carved out, mirror the 10” thick meditation platforms of the space. The transition from light to dark helps the senses gradually transition getting the mind ready to meditate.

The underlit platforms in these zones give an illusion of floating in water.

Individual dome ceiling provide a sense of personal space and focus while being in a common hall.

Narrow long window in the private meditation room provides a streak of light on the wall. Circular shapes in the facade create an interesting pattern on the wall which moves with the rays of the sun. This creates a fluid movement in the wall design, much like the movement of water.

The third level hosts the sensory deprivation tanks for individuals and couples, green, red, and blue light rooms, along with a halo therapy room. This level also has an outdoor space, where individuals can meditate in semi-private pods while enjoying the views from the higher floors.

Outdoor meditation pods The outdoor meditation pods are designed to give guests privacy while they practice yoga, or other forms of meditation. Creating these pods on water assist with the calm process and gives the sensation on standing on water.

Creating an additional platform outside helps with giving the guests an elevated view of the surroundings and the landscape of the property

Outdoor meditation pods The shape for the individual pods is inspired by the ripple effect of the water, spanning out from the centre to create a open yet private space for people.

The vertical studs are angled along the curve for more privacy. This also creates a unique pattern in the water which moves according to the rays of the sun.

To enhance the luxurious experience, all couple treatment rooms are all designed with private jacuzzi, twin showers, changing area and a private powder room. The accessible treatment room also host a jacuzzi and shower area that is completely ADA compliant.

The shower area in the treatment rooms are designed with an adjoining glass panel that overlooks the jacuzzi and gives the guest a great view of the outdoors while maintaing privacy.

The platform holding the sunk-in jacuzzi also boast a tread detail with concealed lights under each step.

The concept for this 8450 sq ft flagship store was driven by McQueens attention to detail.

Trained on Savile Row, he was know for his exquisite embroidered suits with secret pockets and

hidden messages.

Mirroring the McQueen ethos of craftsmanship and attention to detail, this store is designed using a minimal material palette with seamless transition from floor to wall.

The concept is further developed keeping in mind the organic flow of Alexander McQUEEN’s stores.

This Vancouver flagship store boasts the Sarah Burton signature of honeycomb ceiling feature.

The traditional conical Vietnamese hat or nón lá dictates the spatial form of this 6500 sq ft restaurant.

The circular form of this hat, that is deep rooted in the Vietnamese culture, inspired the 360 degree philosophy of the restaurant.

The spatial concept is a hybrid space creating an experience of dining with retail, where customers can take back spices etc to continue their food journey even after they have left the restaurant.

The aesthetic concept is driven by escapism and biophilia with the interpretation of modern, French influenced Vietnam.

The entrance to the restaurant is from the two storey high circular vestibule with a skylight. Cladded with bamboo and vertical garden, gives the customers a sense of being one with nature. Here the customers are greeted by the host and taken to their seats.

The aesthetic concept is driven by escapism and biophilia with the interpretation of modern, French influenced Vietnam. Dome like shapes and arches are influenced by the natural landscapes of Vietnam and the architectural heritage of France.

These forms dominate the space creating functional sections for different areas of the restaurant.

Materials, textures and color palette used in the project is a reflection of the Vietnamese culture.

Fresco paintings on the wall by Vietnamese artist Vu Thu Hein adds a touch of color to the space.

Part of the customer experience is the 14’ high ceilings and the 25’ long semiopen kitchen and pass that overlook the entire restaurant. This is the first thing you see after you enter the space. Either sides of the kitchen walls are covered in floor to ceiling fresco painting by artist Vu Thu Hein from Hanoi.

Curved wooden rafters suspended from the ceiling provide a dome like look over the main bar on the ground level.

Creepers on the rafters adds to the biophilic element of the space.

Similar dome like structure on the opposite end provides a cozy space for the formal dining area. The drop ceiling and water feature in this area is influenced by the landscapes of Vietnam.

The main floor of the restaurant is designed in a way so every zone has a view of the open kitchen. Each area has a contrasting, yet complimenting floor and ceiling finish.

Retail rotunda

The design experience continues as you make your way up to the first floor. The rotunda is cladded with backlit shelving that wraps around the wall on one side. This space allows for the guests to walk around the retail area and enter the dining or bar space from either sides.

Theatre style seating in the bar area makes for good viewing of the entire floor. Lowered ceiling at the bar also gives the space its own identity. Enlarged fresco painting within arches compliments the colorful and playful atmosphere of the bar.

The private dining room is within a skylight dome giving the customers a unique dining experience. The walls, floor and ceiling are all finished in plaster paint with cove lighting to give it a cave like feeling.

Located at Colombia street in north Vancouver, this 4851 sq ft house is designed with the open plan concept to amplify the spectacular ocean and

mountain views.

The over all design of the social zone is based on simplicity, contrast and elegance .

The bespoke furniture and wall paneling is integrated into the design of the house. Through the use of a consistent material pallet including accents of bronze patina and black matte powder coated metal, natural white oak, opaque glass and marble, the house has modern and simplistic look.

The dining and living space boast roman colums that sit well with the mill work and cove ceilings. The walkway between the kitchen and dining make it convenient to access, while making a symmetrical space for the powder room and pantry.

The social zones are all located at the main floor, with the formal living and family room on one side with the kitchen and dining on the other. These zones are strategically located on either sides of the house with the central zone open to the staircase and the art studio.

The Art Studio boasts a double height ceiling with a skylight and glass doors to let in maximum light, making it a perfect space to design and paint. Being surrounded by glass doors and glazing from every side, the studio allows for convenient line of site to the rest of the main floor.

Master Bedroom The master bedroom is designed with an ensuite bathroom and walk-in closet big enough to hold the couples clothes and accessories. the 4 door mirrored closets on either sides makes for a good walkway to the jacuzzi area while providing privacy too.

Floor to ceiling glazing in the master ensuite adds to the dynamism of the mountain views.

A comfortable chaise lounge in the space makes it the ideal spot to kick back and relax.

The partial skylight in the master ensuite above the double sink vanity brings in natural light to the interiors of the bathroom as well.

The office space designed for a small size architectural studio headed by the husband is located at the basment level of the house. The idea for designing this space was to have enough room and open space for the employees to collaboratively work, develop ideas and produce drawings.

The space is divided in to main forms. the idea was to have a contrast in materials, colors and textures while maintaining a uniformity in the spaces. The ideas was derived from cutting basic shapes out of a solid geometry. Combining these space together led to two main forms; one with a light color palette and the other with a high contrast.

I highly recommend Kajal Setpal as a candidate for an interior design position. She has worked 99 hours as an intern with Concrete Cashmere Designs, under our supervision, from January 4th 2021 to February 23rd, 2021. During that time, Kajal brought her impressive set of design skills to our team in more ways than once. She is enthusiastic about design and has an intricate eye for detail. During the pandemic and working from home, she still showed up and sent an email each morning willing to take on any tasks assigned to her.

Kajal was involved in many projects over the past two months that I believe expanded her knowledge in the industry. She worked closely with our team by developing CAD plans from rough measurements and turning them into functional space plans. In addition, she received on site experience with conducting full site measures and verifications as well as working on full sets of design drawings for Building Permit applications. Kajal also excelled in supporting our general office needs throughout her time at Concrete Cashmere. For example, she was able to run errands and help organize our materials library room. She was able to go above and beyond in order to complete tasks in a efficient and timely matter.

I would truly recommend Kajal for a future interior design position that is in either commercial or residential projects. As we are currently not hiring for a full-time interior design position, we will be very sad to lose Kajal, however, we are excited to see where new opportunities take her.
