Project Brief

Human interaction and proximity served as an important routines in normal people’s life. However, there is a social phenomenon known as hikikomori (social withdrawal group), numbering over one million in Japan, who see no intention of human interaction and often self-reincarnate themselves in their own world. This community group often being classified as the “shadow in the city” which humiliated and betrayed the nation’s collectivism culture and identity.

Hikikomori became a widely observable phenomenon in the 1990s when Japan’s economy was going through a period of stagnation. This subjected a young and eager population to uninviting work conditions, begetting their social withdrawal. According to experts in the field, such as Saito Tamaki, he suggests that the population of hikikomori in Japan could exceed 10 million. Therefore, a greater sense of urgency must be brought to conversations about abating hikikomori.

It is estimated that by 2030, one-third of Japan’s population will be at least 65 years old and one-fifth of the population will be at least 75 years old. The growing labor shortage places Japan, the world’s third-largest economy, in a precarious position. Under these conditions, hikikomori further suppresses Japan’s economic potential. If the youth continue to succumb to social pressures and isolate themselves, Japan faces a problem in replacing retirees and aging workers.

Hence, the proposal is rather a hypothesis idea. By reimagining the electric town, Akihabara, as a hikiko-friendly city, creating a place of celebration for hikikomori to build their own community, gradually reconnect to the society, and set their own social values and in the meantime seek to address the jobless and mental health issues of hikikomori.
