I am a designer who specialized in architecture. A community and educational institution specialized in renewable energy science and environmental technologies. MIRE seeks to unite the sectors of housing, industry, and education into a single closedloop system of living; meeting the rising demand for NYC’s clean energy initiative.

Community: To provide an educational hub open for the local community to engage in NYC’s pursuit of a cleaner, more efficient energy system.

Education: To prepare, educate and accredit students to meet the emerging demand for energy alternative careers.

Sustainability: To embody the ideas of sustainability both spatially and industrially, becoming a symbol for a self-sufficient microcosm in Hudson Yards, Manhattan. To utilize architectural design to integrate systems that influence reduction, re-use, and recycling of energy intensive consumer goods.

Local Context: To engage spatially with the immediate physical systems of the site (Hudson Yards, High Line, Hudson River) while simultaneously networking with the local industrial supply chain to form a united and integrated production organization.

The new Winter Park Public Library serves as a community center for the local. It also takes the reponsibility as a protection from the rail way to the comercial street, as well as a welcoming center for tourists coming from the Sunrail Railway. It brings a modern energy to the historical town, which is able to draw attention and interests from younger generation to the area.

In the public space, sharp angles are in contrast with the curve of the railway, but still follows the curve. As a result, it shows how different systems collide and interact with each other. I focused on the layering effect. It firstly gives the thickness of the public space by showing the material underneath. Secondly, the layers created steps going down with a very slight angle. It is a demonstration of the urban beach concept, which means the gentle slope in a square that people tend to seat on.

The unique interior space movement is celebrated by the skin. The forms of the main facade follows, as well as emphasizes, the landscape between floors.

Other than that, the facade is broken down into triangular geometries that register with the public space. It also expresses the difference between scale by having pieces that are small, medium, large arranged this way. It gets more broken down around the entrance to create a cave effect.

A second system of façade is layered under the first one, which is composed of reflective panels. Due to the North facing facade, there’s barely going to be direct sunlight into the front face. Thus, the 2 second skin, firstly, reflect sunlight from sky into the interior; secondly, serves as enclosure.

One large scale skylight to maximize the interior lighting. A unique function of this indoor railway is that when it rains, it creates an indoor waterfall that goes into the drainage system, due to the slope of the public space, the rainwater flows back to the reflecting pool just with the help of gravity.

The same idea applies to the interior. I wanted this architecture to become a welcoming and enjoyable space. With that being said, I wanted to continue the slope into the interior spaces. There are 2 main slopes that form the space inside the library. The slopes not only serve as the connection between floors, but also provide a space where people can also sit on it casually.

The Second Slope usually serves as a reading area as the first slope . When needed, it can be used as a auditorium. When combine the two slopes, they resulted in the anti clockwise up hill circulation experience.

Thus, walking through the library becomes a pleasing adventure.

The design concept is inspired by the various forms of water which happen annually in the site when the season changes. The one skin that serves as the roof and the facade mimics the dynamic of melting ice.

The matte finish of the skin, respecting the texture of the ice full of air bubbles, diffuses the light while protecting privacy.

The hotel is enclosed with a unibody of roof and facade. The translucent enclosure not only maximizes natural indoor lighting but also makes the building glowing at night, like a beacon corresponding to the phenomenon of northern light. The maximized skylight opens up the view of the night sky to the occupants.

A sweeping canopy arising right above the hot spring pool provides an opportunity for people to gather while enjoying the night sky.
