My name is KAI-PO TSENG, and I am a sophomore in the Department of Architecture at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST). Growing up in creative and open-minded education, I developed a strong curiosity and creativity about the world around me. At the same time, I have cultivated qualities such as responsibility, attentiveness, and patience, which enable me to handle challenges with a calm and composed attitude.

In this design project, I created a parent-child interactive theater in the city. Through the arrangement of circulation and the design of spaces, I aimed to craft an engaging architectural experience, transforming the theater from a traditional cultural venue into a catalyst that sparks vibrant interactions within the urban fabric, becoming a lively public space full of energy.

Taipei, Zongshan

CONCEPT

By excavating the ground and diagonally cutting the massing, a public space is created that draws people in.

The interlocking floor enable a seamless and fluid movement through the building.

Color is employed as a means to differentiate the circulation routes between audience and performers or staff.

The large floating theater volume serves as the iconic entrance image of the building, drawing visitors into the sunken plaza.

The southern volume functions not only as a public service area, housing a café, reading space, public media zone, souvenir shop, and a semi-outdoor terrace leading to the theater, but also accommodates rehearsal rooms and dressing rooms for theater staff and performers. The circulation gently ascends in a stepped manner, creating a fluid and continuous interior space.

A vivid red staircase guides the audience from the semi-outdoor terrace into the theater.

The entrance lobby beneath the theater volume functions as a reception space, connecting to the surrounding public areas.

In this project, I studied Villa dall’Ava designed by Rem Koolhaas, using it as the foundation for a three-phase exploration aimed at understanding the fundamental elements of architectural design. Beginning with a case study, I hand-drew the architectural drawings and made physical models to deepen my comprehension and engagement with the original work.

In the second phase, I extracted key spatial elements, developing diagrams and concept models to investigate the relationships between space, circulation, and form. This process allowed me to uncover the underlying strategies and spatial logic embedded within the design.

Finally, reflecting on the methods and ideas observed, I reinterpreted and transformed them into my own spatial creation. Throughout this journey, Koolhaas’s innovative approach deeply fascinated me and has had a profound, lasting influence on the development of my architectural style.

The site is locate in the residential area of Saint Cloud, Paris. Facing the Seine and the Pairs city. The slope terrain gives a good view of Paris city.

Two of Le Corbusier are nearby. And Villa Savoye is not far from the site.

DESIGN OPERATION

Bastille Day 2009. As they do every year, the Bs are hosting a little garden party at their Saint Cloud villa. The garden is calm and fresh, the house delicious. At the end of the evening we'll all go up to the terrace to admire the fireworks over the Eiffel Tower. But for the moment it's still light. Most of the guests are already here: friends of the Bs, family, a few architects. The couple show their visitors around the place - she, in an of the striped elegant black dress that sets off her piercing eyes; he, in a white shirt and heavy-framed glasses...

At nightfall, we all gather near the swimming pool for the party's final spectacle. Is it the distance from Paris, or the breeze that has risen to the west, or a technical malfunction - for some reason we do not hear the explosion of fireworks that erupts from the Champ de Mars. Above the city plunged into darkness, the Eiffel Tower ignites noiselessly, as in a silent film...

"The House of Doctor Koolhaas"

Death of Modern Architecture

03:32pm, July 15, 1972

Salon (n.) [c]

a meeting of writers, painters, etc, at the house of someone famous or important.

The salon was notably French cultural event, a private social gathering where a mixture of guests openly discussed art, literature, philosophy, music, and politics.

Salon was perticularly but not exclusively associated with Paris and were most often hosted by wealthy and well-connected women.

In the final part of the design, I decided to do a addtional salon in the back yard of the site. During the case study, I found an article in AA Files NO.68 called "The house of doctor Koolhaas" There was a story telling the house owners arranged a party in Villa Dall' Ava. And all the guests are the believer of modern architecture except a lady. The story was illustrating the slavish of those believers of modernism. According to the story, I decided to design a narrative space to show the content.

CONCEPT

Egg Volume

The concept of the eggshaped form originates from OMA’s early logo and Rem Koolhaas’ description in S, M, L, XL. He views the egg as a vessel for incubating organic life — its perfect form protects the life within, but once the organism hatches, the shell breaks and ceases to exist. I believe this is analogous to modern architecture: it appears to be a perfect shell, safeguarding those who firmly believe in it. However, when reality strikes, the shell cracks, and the utopian fantasies of modernism shatter one by one.

In this project, I designed a co-living apartment. In modern society, the distance between people has become increasingly ambiguous; face-to-face interactions are often replaced by activities on social media. Co-living not only emphasizes interaction among residents but also must ensure privacy. Finding the right balance of distance between residents is crucial to create the most comfortable sense of closeness and space for everyone.

Junior High School

The site is located in the south-east side of Houlong Township, Miaoli County. Near the high speed rail Miaoli station. There's a sparsely populated local community, a junior high school, and a park across from the site.

The weather here is the subtropical monsoon climate, annual average temperature is around 22°C, with the highest monthly average temperature in July at 28.3°C and the lowest in January at 14.9°C.

During the autumn and winter seasons, the region is affected by strong northeast monsoons.

Privacy is the essential element for any kinds of housing space. When it comes to "Co-living" space, the privacy of residents is always a important point to keep an eye on. And nowaday in the oversocialize community, the "personal bubble" has been destroied by social media. People in the modern society are easy to experience social fatigue. But how can we keep the social distance? Should we just build wall that block the connection between people to protect their privacy?

CONCEPT

A research found that Finnish peple automaticolly line up with three-meter gap between each other. The "FInland social distance" perfectly preserves their personal bubble. And it also makes me came out with the idea that only when we feel the existance of each other, then we truely feel our privacy.

In the design, I use balcony as a buffer. I notice that people can only see through but cannot get into the house only with the house owner's permittion. The house owners can also decide how close or open their balconies are. And the variety of balconies can also create a lively atrium. I also create a lot of terraces and some in-between space that residents can go and have not only social events but to feel alone according to their preference.
