About us!

Casey Philharmonic Orchestra is a young, innovative and vibrant amateur community orchestra based in the City of Casey. We held our first rehearsal in June 2017, and performed at the opening of Bunjil Place – now our principal performance venue - in October the same year.

Now in our fifth year CPO continues to provide extraordinary opportunities for amateur musicians in Melbourne’s outer south-east. We strongly value building relationships and collaborating with other local arts organisations, and we pride ourselves on performing orchestral music of the highest calibre for the enjoyment of our audiences and musicians alike.

To that end, Casey Philharmonic Orchestra warmly welcomes you to this performance of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Music where we showcase once again the genius of composer John Williams who scored three of the eight Harry Potter blockbuster movies. CPO will be ably supported by the young voices of Melbourne Youth Chorale who share the stage with us for the first time, alongside 8 vocalists from Berwick College.

John Williams and the music of

Harry Potter

John Williams is a much-loved composer of film scores, having written for dozens of films and television shows since the 1960s. Williams continues to compose for film and television series today, and his legacy includes many of the world’s most well-known and loved movies, including Jurassic Park, Raiders of the Lost Ark, ET, Schindler’s List and many more. His music is an integral part of the storytelling in these movies, with key themes (called ‘leitmotifs’) that represent particular characters, places or moods.

These leitmotifs return at various points in a movie to subtly remind the audience that this character or place is re-appearing. Williams has had a huge influence on the ways in which the storytelling in films is supplemented by music. His music is adored by musicians and audiences alike, and many musicians attribute their performance careers to their exposure to his music in their early years.

Williams turned 90 this year, and after a successful performance of the music of Star Wars in March, Casey Philharmonic Orchestra is delighted to continue our celebration of his birthday and incredible musical achievements.

Music for the first three Harry Potter films was written by John Williams. Sadly for audiences, he was unable to write for the others, as his schedule simply did not align with that of the film makers.

Music for the final four movies was composed variously by Patrick Doyle, Nicholas Hooper and Alexandre Desplat. These composers continued to make use of many of Williams’ leitmotifs, which were combined with new ones developed for newer characters and scenes.

- Suite One Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone The music in this suite is quite unusual. While like most film suites it presents a series of key themes that appear and help tell the story throughout the movies, the suite is presented rather like a ‘guide to the orchestra’. Most of the pieces in this suite are played by smaller groups of instruments rather than the whole orchestra. Hedwig’s Flight opens the first suite. Opening with the famous celeste melody, this piece uses a reduced orchestra. The melody is first heard as the recently-orphaned infant Harry is delivered for safekeeping to his muggle relatives. Some believe this melody represents points at which the characters either act courageously or return to a place of security and safety, while others suggest it represents magic and the wizarding world generally.

While never formally appearing as a ‘school anthem’, Hogwarts Forever returns whenever the grandeur of the school is displayed, or when formal school occasions occur on screen. Scored for horn quartet and performed today by an expanded low brass ensemble (horns and trombones), the majesty of the theme is evident.

Voldemort is one of two themes associated with this most evil of wizards. It is played in this suite by 3 bassoons. Nimbus 2000 is played by the woodwind section and is associated with flying, fun and mischief.

Fluffy and his Harp features a solo bassoon and harp, and represents the music used to charm to sleep the 3-headed dog that guards the Philosopher’s Stone in a tower of Hogwarts. Quidditch is written for brass ensemble (trumpets, horns, trombones and tuba), and appears at the first Quidditch match in the year one movie.

Family Portrait was originally written for solo clarinet and cello quartet. However, today it is performed by the entire string section plus solo clarinet. The piece describes Harry’s wistful feelings towards his parents and his new family at Hogwarts. The quirky piece Diagon Alley features recorders, which help provide an old-worldly feel. The quirky, magical nature of the alley can be heard in the jaunty themes on solo violin and viola.

Double Trouble originally appeared in the third movie (Prisoner of Azkaban) and suite, but we have chosen to end the first act of our performance with this piece today. Involving lyrics from the famous witches’ scene in Shakespeare’s Macbeth, this piece features a children’s choir.

Slytherin

It plays at the beginning of the movie where the Hogwarts choir entertains staff and students as they enter the start-of-year feast in the great hall. The choir performing today is composed of singers from the Melbourne Youth Chorale’s Jones Performance Choir and the Berwick College Vocal Ensemble, and we’re delighted these young singers can join the orchestra on stage today.

- Suite Two Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets The graceful, flowing melody that portrays Fawkes the Phoenix opens the second Chamber of Secrets suite. Opening with celeste and flute chords, augmented by string arpeggios, this gentle melody is first played by horn and flute, an unusual but effective combination that describes the regal yet gentle nature of this great phoenix. Fawkes lives in Dumbledore’s office, and rescues the injured and weakened Harry and Ginny from the Chamber after they defeat Tom Riddle.

Fearing for Harry’s safety Dobby the House Elf attempts to prevent him returning for his second year at Hogwarts. The mischievous but loyal elf is portrayed by a theme that sounds at once eccentric and majestic. Interrupting flourishes played by the woodwind section, and a cheeky countermelody, show his playful and ineffective attempts to protect the young wizard.

The inept but charming wizard Gilderoy Lockhart and the publishing house Flourish and Blotts are depicted by a sassy theme that stops and starts, full of short, bouncy notes that perhaps evoke the bumbling wizard who is singularly lacking in the ability to render any magic effectively.

The Chamber of Secrets theme describes the chamber that appears late in the second movie. Played quietly at first, the theme suggests the mystery of this strange, secret place beneath the castle. Distant horn calls depict the journey into the chamber. The melody is played higher and at ever-increasing volumes, with agitated counter-rhythms played by various sections of the orchestra, to suggest the danger, fear and growing tension of the battle that plays out in this dark cave.

- Suite Three Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Witches, Wands and Wizards is a medley of melodies from key moments in the third movie. It opens with the furious Quidditch game played under the zealous and dangerous watch of the Dementors. Loud shrieks are played on high strings and woodwind, with a strident, angry horn fanfare announcing the fast, dangerous and highly competitive game.

Following this, pizzicato strings move into a section with flurries of fast scales on violins, representing the young wizards chasing Scabbers the rat. This gives way to a virtuoso flute solo named Hagrid’s Friendly Bird. Finally, the Snow Fight between the invisible Harry and his nemesis Malfoy is represented by a quick and joyous melody.

Aunt Marge’s Waltz appears early in the Azkaban movie, where the Dursley’s grumpy, demanding aunt bullies Harry. He loses his temper and casts a spell that causes her to blow up like a balloon and float away. This playful and comical waltz opens with an oboe solo as she begins to inflate. She becomes more distressed as Uncle Vernon attempts to rescue her, and as she ultimately floats away, the music gains speed and volume.

Williams drew on fanfare-like trombone lines from famous 19th century operatic overtures to tell the triumph of the wicked aunt floating away into the distance.

The Knight Bus draws on John Williams’ early work as a jazz pianist. Listen out for jazz rhythms in this quirky piece. The Knight Bus rescues stranded witches and wizards across London. The fast, first section describes the crazed and weaving drive of the bus through crowded London streets. Then a slow middle section portrays the bus as it slows and squeezes between two other oncoming buses (remember the line “Why the long faces?” !), before returning to complete Harry’s journey to the Leaky Cauldron.

A Bridge to the Past is played when Harry finally understands who Sirius Black is. They reminisce about Sirius’ time with Harry’s parents and make plans to build a new family together. The piece opens with harp chords and sighs on the violins, before a wistful melody is played by the oboe and then flute and horn. The piece portrays the yearning of Harry and Sirius to belong and to find family together.

Harry’s Wondrous World appears in the Philosopher’s Stone suite however we have opted to play this as the final piece for today’s performance. The piece utilises the full orchestra playing a medley of themes that embody and celebrate Harry’s friendship with Ron and Hermione.

What’s the difference between a SYMPHONY Orchestra and a PHILHARMONIC Orchestra?

In a word, nothing!

An orchestra in the modern sense is simply a group of musicians. Both of these ‘types’ of orchestras are made up of the same four instrument sections (strings, wind, brass and percussion), are generally large (up to 100 players) and are more than capable of playing symphonies!

The word ‘symphony’ has Greek origins, meaning ‘sounding together’ and was used in English from the early 1200s. Simply put, you could consider the term symphony orchestra to mean a group of musicians sounding (playing) together.

‘Philharmonic’ is also derived from Greek roots: ‘philos’ meaning ‘love’, and ‘harmonia’ meaning ‘music’. The expression was adopted by music appreciation societies in the 1700s, some of which went on to establish their own orchestras. Philharmonic orchestra = a group of musicians who love music, which goes without saying really!

Despite not having any meaningful connotations, the two terms are useful to distinguish between orchestras originating from the same location, such as the London Symphony Orchestra and the London Philharmonic.

Get to know Your CPO! Gerry has worked as a local General Practitioner for 30 years. He learnt piano as a child, and violin in his 40s. He is involved in other community orchestras in the outer east and south-east of Melbourne (Maroondah Symphony, Dandenong Ranges Orchestra, Nicholas Orchestra), and is CPO’s Upper Strings Section Manager.

Gerry is passionate about classical music and his two dogs. He found that music helped tremendously during his time off for cancer treatment and he’s keen to share the benefits of music widely.

About our Special Guests…

Melbourne Youth Chorale

Melbourne Youth Chorale was established in 1986 (as Berwick Youth Choir) by the late Jean Heriot OAM and has been transforming lives in Casey-Cardinia for 36 years by providing quality music education to children and young people aged 6-20 in a positive, growth-oriented environment. At MYC we believe that everyone deserves the gift of music and we operate on a 'donate what you can afford' basis to enable children of all backgrounds and abilities to access music education. Through choir rehearsals and musicianship tutorials, MYC inspires choristers to develop self-confidence, teamwork, tenacity, leadership and life-long friendships.

Berwick College Vocal Ensemble Mr Toby Dadson formed the Berwick College Vocal Ensemble in 2015 with music students interested in singing. In 2017, Ms Tamblyne Brittaine joined the Instrumental Music staff and became Director of the Berwick College Vocal Ensemble. Consisting of students in the school’s singing program, they perform material from a variety of genres, ranging from popular through to musical theatre and jazz. The ensemble regularly perform at the school’s music concerts and functions, and have performed at the Berwick Carols by Candlelight since 2016. The Vocal Ensemble is currently under the direction of Ms Ebony Borg. This concert is the ensemble’s first performance with an orchestra.

Kent Ross ~ Resident Conductor Kent is a composer, conductor, musical theatre director, arranger and music educator from Melbourne. He has a Masters of Music from Box Hill College of Music where he specialised in conducting. He also holds a Bachelor of Music (ACU) in classical piano and choral conducting as well as a Bachelor of Music in Composition (Box Hill).

Kent has musically directed and conducted over thirty musical theatre productions including Les Misérables, Titanic, Catch Me If You Can, Suessical, The Addams Family, The Boy From Oz and Legally Blonde.

Kent has been nominated multiple times for ‘Best Musical Director’ by the Lyrebirds and the Music Theatre Guild of Victoria, and several of his piano compositions were formerly on the ANZCA syllabus. He also has written rock, jazz, gothic rock and heavy metal music, and was the keyboardist for Melbourne-based metal band Catwitch. Kent has been with Casey Philharmonic Orchestra since 2017 – he is currently the orchestra’s Vice President and was appointed CPO’s Resident Conductor in 2019. He is also the Music Director of youth dance company Spark Productions, and the Chief Conductor of the Melbourne Mandolin Orchestra.

Matt Westwood ~ Concertmaster Matt is a professional violinist, composer and music teacher.

He holds an Associate Diploma in Music from the Australian Music Examinations Board, and a Bachelor of Music with Honours from the University of Melbourne.

Matt is an experienced orchestral concertmaster, having led a number of ensembles across Melbourne including the Surrey Hills Orchestra, Eltham Orchestra, Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Victoria, Spark Productions and is now co-concertmaster of CPO. He teaches violin, viola and piano at Casey Grammar School and Officer Secondary College, and runs his own music studio for teaching, recording and composing.
