get active, and learn about health and wellbeing. It also served as a mentoring programme, training locals to run the activities, referee matches and manage the administration of the programme. Organiser Ron Muavae says the success of the pilot programme has meant they can now go ahead and plan future events. “It was always our hope that we could deliver an alternative sports programme that is full of new skills, fun, and could serve as a springboard for the rugby season to follow. We’re now planning a Mini Olympics event for later this year.”

HLC was proud to support the pilot programme through the donation of healthy food and drinks for the children together with Moni Collins of Touch New Zealand. HLC Development Manager Brendon Hosken says “It’s great to see community-led initiatives like MCS have such a positive impact with local kids using and taking pride in their spaces like Fergusson Park. I’m glad we could be a part of it.”
