Oranga Development Progress Update Oranga Development Information Centre now open Christmas came early for the Oranga community with the opening of the Oranga Development Information Centre at 34 Oranga Avenue.

Festivities kicked off on Wednesday 4 December at 5 am with a dawn blessing led by Te Akitai Waiohua and attended by members of the Oranga Development team.

The blessing was followed by some delicious kai, kindly supplied by local businesses, and attendees were gifted Kowhai plants in recognition of their support. Later in the day, the development team hosted a drop-in session for members of the community to check out the new digs and ask questions about the development. Tea, coffee and light refreshments were provided.

The Oranga Information Centre is a place for the local community to come and find out more about the exciting changes happening in their neighbourhood, such as plans for new and improved infrastructure, public spaces and of course, new warm, dry, healthy homes. A mini Olympics in Oranga Following the success of last February’s pilot sports programme - Maungakiekie Community Sports (MCS) hundreds of local children were treated to a follow up ‘mini Olympics’ event sponsored by the Oranga Development team in November last year.

The initiative aims to get local children engaged in physical activity and learn about health and wellbeing through sport. But that’s not the only benefit; it also serves as a mentoring programme, with students from the local secondary school helping to

run the event so that they may better develop their social and employment skills.

The recent mini Olympics event included relays, sack races, tug-o-war, touch and netball. Children competed across five weekends at Oranga’s very own Fergusson Domain. Brendon Hosken, Development Manager for the Oranga Development, said that “it’s great to see communityled initiatives like MCS have such a positive impact with local kids using and taking pride in their spaces like Fergusson Park.”

to attend the Maungakiekie Youth Awards evening following the event.

Both events were led by Oranga locals Jim Kuresa Moore of Te Papapa Rugby Sports Club, Ron Muavae of Synergy Projects and Malo SumichKainiu of Sports Auckland. We need your help, Oranga We try hard to avoid vacant development sites for long periods of time by aligning tenant relocations with the start of construction works.

Unfortunately, in some circumstances, there’s a small delay which cannot be helped.

If you see any unlawful or suspicious activity happening at a vacant property including vandalism or unlawful entry, please contact the police. If the activity is not an emergency and has already occurred, for example, graffiti or broken windows, please dial 105.

The Oranga Development Progress Update

Stage 1 of the development is progressing well. 25 houses have been removed, making way for around 51 new state homes. Construction of the first Kāinga Ora state homes for Oranga are now complete. Construction of the remaining homes has now begun and are due to be completed by mid-2021.

We’re continuing our conversations with Council organisations, looking for ways to improve streets and community amenity to get things such as walkways, streets and parks to work well for the community. At this stage, all plans are indicative only and we will keep you updated if there are any changes to the current plan.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

Meet Iani Nemani What does the role of Community Development and Engagement Coordinator involve?

My role as Community Development and Engagement Coordinator is to work with a variety of stakeholders in the community - from local residents to youth groups, local businesses and government organisations. I listen to their concerns and ideas, identify issues, find innovative solutions and achieve a shared vision for the community that benefits everyone.

I love working alongside people committed to building strong communities and healthy homes for families, which ultimately leads to a thriving and productive country.

What were you doing previously?

I have been around the traps for a little while! I initially trained as a social worker and have qualifications in social work, social policy, economic development and theology.

Prior to my role here I was employed as a Diversity Manager focusing on workplace diversity and inclusion, and prior to that, I developed strategies to increase Maori and Pasifika participation in trades training and apprenticeships in one of New Zealand’s leading industry

training organisations. I’m also currently serving on the Board of Trustees for the Pasifika Education Centre and the Patient Whanau Centred Care Council (PWCCC) at the Auckland District Health Board (ADHB).

What’s your favourite thing to do outside the office?

Community gardens are one of the best ways to bring diverse communities together and encourage social cohesion. Show me a vacant piece of land and allow me to plant a garden and I will spend my time outside of work digging holes, getting my hands dirty and planting vegetables to share with others.

What do you love about Oranga?

I think Oranga is New Zealand’s best hidden little gem.
