Summer 2023

Yvonne hired Graeme as a mentor but quickly realised he had the passion and skills to bring gardens, and the communities around them, to a new level. Graeme very soon became the CEO, overseeing all 7 local gardens. Yvonne says “He understood that these were more than just gardens but places for communities to connect, foster and become self-reliant. He always sought to promote diversity, inclusion and understanding.” Graeme passed away in 2022 and Yvonne had planned to plant a tree in his honour. “Takana Nurseries offered a tall kauri-tree that carried itself with mana. The other similarity it had with Graeme was the slight bend in its back. We knew immediately that this was the right tree for Graeme.” Yvonne said. Many locals, including teams from corrections, all pitched in to dig a hole big enough to plant ‘Graeme the kauri.’ He now stands in the centre of a clearing, with five smaller trees – representing his five siblings – surrounding him.

Graeme Stands Tall and Proud

The spot chosen for Graeme allows him to see down to the nearby stream, meaning he retains oversight on his vision of returning all this area to natives. The work has begun and over 40 natives have already been planted. Yvonne says “Graeme would have loved it here. He can see everyone coming down the road to his beloved gardens.”

A Kauri tree, donated by Takana Nurseries, was planted in Mangere’s Old School Teaching Gardens in honour of Graeme Hansen, the CEO who helped this charitable trust grow from strength to strength. ‘Graeme the kauri’ now stands tall and proud overlooking the garden and community he loved. Old School Teaching Gardens are an extension of the traditional community gardens concept, supporting communities to eat healthy and economically. Yvonne Thomas, one of the trust’s founders, tells us that what makes this venture unique is the work they do – especially with local corrections organisations – to teach life-long gardening skills.

Te Ararata Stream Clean-up Earlier this year more than 50 Kāinga Ora team members got together with the Te Ararata Stream Team, and other volunteers, to mulch, collect rubbish, build new pathways and restore nests for the eels that call the river home. This was the start of a long-term partnership we want to foster.

This walk-through proved to be highly informative and provided an excellent opportunity to strengthen our relationship. During the walk-through, we addressed a number of concerns about our empty sites, with key priorities being illegal dumping, damaged fences, and pest-weeds.

In early October we had the privilege of participating in a walk-through of the Te Ararata Stream with the Stream Team. The objective was to help us better understand some of the key challenges they are facing and the ways we could further support them.

The Mangere Development team will continue to support the Stream Team with their mahi in Mangere West. “We are part of this community, so we’re keen to keep working with our neighbours to make this an even better place to live”, says Wayne Kennar, Stakeholder Relationship Manager.

We are actively collaborating with our contractors and will continue to work with the Stream Team and other agencies to support the community in resolving these concerns.

Stormwater Kōrero Firstly, a big thank you to the I AM Māngere team for their massive mahi in organising these kōrero sessions. And thank you to everyone who came and shared their heartfelt stories with us. We heard the voice of a community still dealing with loss and in need of further support. As a result, we joined up with the Tāmaki Makaurau Recovery Office to provide useful information and contacts that can help address many of your questions and concerns. Please visit mangeredevelopment.co.nz for more info.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us through our Street Chats. We’ll look to have another hui in early 2024 to provide an update on progress with stormwater planning.

Community Enviro Hub Opening

An exciting hub where you can come together and unite our voices, energy and efforts to improve our community. The space is on the corner of Elmdon Street and Watchfield Close and is ideal for groups with a strong environmental focus and connections to Papatūānuku (Earth Mother). Local School Embraces Construction Plus Construction Plus, Kāinga Ora’s innovative programme to support local communities through urban development, is launching in Te Aratata in early 2024. Viscount School is the first local school to embrace the programme. Construction Plus helps local communities impacted by urban development, by connecting ākonga (students) with local training, employment and industry opportunities. The scheme is also designed to provide greater awareness to communities about the large scale developments in their area. Viscount School will introduce the ‘Plant the Seed’ programme in the first term of next year. This introductory programme, designed specifically for primary and intermediate students, offers an interactive ways to learn about the different parts of urban development and the career opportunities it offers. Plant the Seed is one of five programmes offered through Construction Plus, using local projects as learning and

work experience opportunities for primary, intermediate and secondary students. The pinnacle of the programme is a 16-20 week paid cadetship, that gives school leavers an opportunity to gain the specific construction skills and experience needed to kickstart their career in the industry. Since it was established in late 2019, nearly 150 people have been engaged through Construction Plus. Of these, nearly half have gone on to become employed, according to Construction Plus Manager Nigel Chandra. Mr Chandra says “the programme continues to be a success, reinforcing Kāinga Ora’s values of working closely with other organisations (Mahi Tahi), supporting communities (Manaakitanga), and being bold (Whanake) in enabling workforce development.” “We hope to see more local schools, and their students, embrace the different programmes offered by Construction Plus in the year ahead.”
