MANGERE WEST PROGRESS UPDATE Summer 2022

GARDENING THROUGH TIPU BOWLS The Kāinga Ora housing team braved Auckland’s high humidity earlier this month to deliver 69 Tipu Bowls to welcome Kāinga Ora customers to Mangere Development’s Bader McKenzie complex.

The Tipu Bowls which are a portable maara kai, were supplied by Ngati Whatua Nursery filled with easy to manage seasonal fruits, vegetables and seedlings for the residents to grow their own kai to enjoy.

As a major landowner, Kāinga Ora has committed to increasing urban ngahere, including māra kai, within the communities in which it operates, including here in Mangere. Ngahere Project Lead Jenny Chilcott says, “We wanted to give our customers a koha that would sprout gardening ideas and green their living space. Tipu Bowls are just a small starting point and we are now looking ahead to gauge customer interest in workshops to help grow their gardening knowledge”.

What does your role involve?

As the Stakeholder Relationship Manager for Mangere, my role is to support the delivery of new homes through effective stakeholder engagement in the community. I help the community have a voice.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I love connecting with local network groups and organisations.

The biggest highlight for me is seeing the passion of the community and being able to work collaboratively together to help build a thriving community.

What do you love most about the Mangere community?

I love that the local community here in Mangere is so diverse and full of passion – it is a community with a real sense of ownership and pride. A real sense of belonging.

What were you doing previously?

I worked as a Tenant Liaison Officer for the Kāinga Ora Roskill Development. I assisted with moving tenants affected by the development into new homes.

What do you like doing outside of the office?

My two favourite things to do would have to be going on hikes, with my favourite spot being anywhere near a waterfall such as Marokopa falls in the Waikato region.

My second favourite thing to do is to travel. Even though boarders have been closed off to most of the world, has required me to appreciate in exploring our own back yard.

My last favourite place was experiencing Milford Sound in Fiordland National Park.
