ROSKILL SOUTH PROGRESS UPDATE SPRING 2021

ROSKILL SOUTH INFO DAY Many people braved the wind and rain to join us at the Roskill South Info Day in July. The informative day out provided plenty of opportunity for the community to ask questions and get the latest development updates. New KiwiBuild and market homes from Mike Greer, FLiP and Modul proved especially popular with the crowds, with more homes on the way.

MAUNGA KITE DAY

In June, the stars aligned for the Manu Aute Kite Day at Puketāpapa, held on the maunga in Mount Roskill. To celebrate Matariki, the sky was filled with impressive kites! Te Whangai Nursery, Archeologist Dr Hans-Dieter Bader, and May Road Primary School were also there welcoming visitors to the mini village. Together, the community created close to 200 Matariki stars to celebrate Māori New Year.

Thanks to the Puketāpapa Local Board for hosting such a great event!

MOLLEY GREEN FOOD FOREST Waikōwhai locals recently formed the EcoNeighbourhood group and started a Food Forest in Molley Green Reserve.

Funded by Puketāpapa Local Board, the EcoNeighbourhood group aims to support locals working collectively on environmental passion projects.

The Food Forest offers a space where communities can grow their own food, share food knowledge and nurture community friendships. Group coordinator Rowan Cant says, “through the garden, we are hoping that people have a central space to gather, meet neighbours, share skills, stories and recipes.” Kāinga Ora was honoured to support this initiative with garden beds and storage for the forest.

The Molley Green EcoNeighbourhood group welcomes anyone living locally who would like to volunteer. Check it out next time you’re in Molley Green.

STATE HOMES UPDATE We’re excited to announce that many new state homes in Roskill South are finished or nearly finished. In Stage 1, a total of 126 state homes have been completed with a remaining 23 homes set to be finished by the end of 2021. Stage 2 has seen all new housing lots complete with an additional 60 state homes finished and tenanted.

Stage 3 is also well underway with 87 state homes to be included in this stage.

In Stage 4, customers of old state homes have been relocated and the old houses removed. Civil works partner Piritahi has started on land remediation with civil works commencing in August 2021.

HOMES FOR SALE Brand new homes are continually being released to purchase off the plans in Roskill South, including KiwiBuild homes.

CHARACTER STREETSCAPING Civil works partner Piritahi is making great progress preparing land and infrastructure to build many more new warm, dry homes in Roskill South. With infrastructure and utility upgrades well underway and nearing completion in many parts of the neighbourhood, ‘streetscaping’ is the next step before the roads are re-opened.

Streetscaping improves safety, accessibility, connectivity and the overall appearance of the neighbourhood.

As part of this work, you’ll see Piritahi’s teams on Kallu Crescent, Roseman Ave and Freeland Ave boxing and pouring concrete for new footpaths, installing kerbing and laying and rolling new road surfaces.

WHAT DOES STREETSCAPING DO? SAFER PEDESTRIAN AREAS

Wider footpaths, pedestrian crossings and upgraded street lighting improve pedestrian safety and accessibility.

IMPROVED ROADING

New roading, pedestrian crossings and traffic calming measures, like raised speed tables, will help manage the speed of vehicles in the neighbourhood and make streets safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

LANDSCAPING Planting native trees and rain gardens will improve our neighborhoods’ visual amenity, while also helping to manage the flow of stormwater.

Piritahi is our civil works alliance. They prepare the land, remove old state homes and upgrade streets and infrastructure before building starts.

ROSKILL SOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRESS UPDATE Construction of 186 Stage 1 and 2 state homes is complete and customers are now settled in the new warm, dry homes.

The remaining 23 Stage 1 state homes are expected to be complete later this year. There are also 124 market and affordable homes currently under construction with an additional 150 new homes commencing in 2021.

Stage 3 development is also underway. The first round of state homes from this stage were completed in July, with an additional 60 under construction and 27 more due to commence.

Construction on market and affordable homes is set to start later in 2021. Stage 4 house removals are now complete and civil works are well underway.

*Approximate numbers only. Around 50% of the market homes will be in a more affordable price range (i.e. priced from $500,000 to $650,000 delivered under the KiwiBuild programme). The total number of new homes delivered to the Roskill South neighbourhood is around 1000 homes.

PIRITAHI BBQ BREAKFAST In July, our civil works partner Piritahi put on a delicious winter breakfast and challenged the residents of Roskill South to oversized puzzles and supersized games at a tasty brekkie BBQ. The event was all about saying thank you to our wonderful neighbours who have been so patient while we’ve been upgrading infrastructure and preparing land for new, warm, dry homes.

SURVEY RESULTS We’ve heard your concerns and we know we can do better. In June, Piritahi distributed a survey to 650 households around Roskill South and received 44 responses.

Congratulations to Jikuan Jack Li whose name was drawn as the winner of Piritahi’s Communications Survey competition at the BBQ event! Feedback from the survey included utilising Facebook to notify residents of construction updates. As a result, Piritahi have launched a Roskill South Facebook page where they will post regular construction updates for you to read.

MEET LIZ Roskill South’s Piritahi Community Liaison Advisor What does your role involve?

My role is pretty much about keeping residents updated alongside our Piritahi team and engaging in upcoming construction works in the Roskill South development.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I love building relationships and getting to know the residents on a weekly basis. I am excited that we are transforming the neighbourhood for us all to enjoy!

What do you love most about the Mt Roskill community?

The diversity, there are so many cultures in our community.

What were you doing previously?

Due to Covid-19, I returned home from Melbourne in March 2020. I was in corporate insurance.

What do you like doing outside of the office?

I love travelling.

GROWING FOOD IN SMALL SPACES:

FINAL EPISODE NOW LIVE! Episode 5 of the Organic Edible Garden ‘Growing Food in Containers’ series is out now! The final episode in the series looks at the successes and challenges of planting throughout summer as well as planning for winter. The series took us on a year-long growing journey with three local families who have a balcony, a patio and a courtyard as their growing space.

With higher density housing changing the size of a ‘typical’ family garden, the series demonstrates that with the right knowledge, growing in small spaces can be both fun and successful.
