Thank you Oranga!

An end of year message from Brendon Hosken, Oranga Development Manager

On Saturday 31 October around 200 locals headed to the Oranga Community Centre to attend the Oranga Community Information Day. Kids and adults alike were kept entertained by a local DJ, bouncy castle and face painting. There was also a delicious array of food and drink available thanks to food stalls run by some awesome Oranga locals.

Oranga residents had the opportunity to hear from our development team who shared information about the exciting changes happening in the neighbourhood.

Piritahi staff were also on hand to provide an update on the major infrastructure upgrades that began last month along Waitangi Road. Piritahi also kindly supplied a digger for the day, which was a big hit with the kids who had their photos taken in the driver’s seat.

Kāinga Ora’s tenancy and financial products teams also attended, providing lots of great tenancy-related information, and advice on the various grants and financial assistance products available to potential homeowners.

A big thank you to everyone who came along to enjoy the day and learn more about Oranga Development.

What a year! There’s been a lot of activity happening in the neighbourhood over the past 12 months, particularly with significant infrastructure works kicking off on Waitangi Road recently. So on behalf of the development team, I’d like to say a big thank you to the whole community for your patience, and your valued feedback as we work to deliver new warm, dry homes to the area.

Thank you also to the various community stakeholder groups and our civil works alliance Piritahi, whose efforts and support are critical to the success of Oranga Development.

And finally, thank you to those who attended our recent Information Day in October. We look forward to hosting many more community events as the development progresses.

JOIN US AT THE ORANGA KAI ORA COMMUNITY GARDEN Under the guidance of a local Kaitiaki group, Oranga’s new community garden now has a planting layout that you can follow.

So if you’re keen to get gardening, grab the whānau and come on down. Everyone is welcome!

Those who contribute to the garden early will share in the first of the harvested produce before it is given to those in need within the community.

Plus, check out our new interactive display at the garden which includes a past, present and future art trail, art installations using materials from the demolition site and a pipe play section too!

CONSTRUCTION PLUS EMPLOYERS BREAKFAST On Wednesday 2 December, Kāinga Ora’s Construction Plus team put on a delicious breakfast spread in celebration of the programme’s successes this year. Held at the Synergy Projects Workshop, attendees had the opportunity to meet other employers from around Oranga, hear the success stories of the local youth who have been working with Kornerstone Recruitment, Synergy Projects and Construction Plus, and of course enjoy some early morning kai!

Construction Plus connects local communities impacted by urban development to sustainable opportunities through education, training and employment. The programme helps support and guide career pathways into a wide range of construction-related roles by connecting employers and employees—including those with disabilities, Māori, Pasifika, women in trades and long term beneficiaries. ORANGA DEVELOPMENT CIVIL WORKS UPDATE

Our civil works partner Piritahi will soon be starting utility upgrades on Waitangi Road. This involves digging trenches to replace old water pipes, undergrounding overhead communication lines and improving the streetscape. The work will be completed in sections and traffic management will be in place over 200m sections of the road at a time.

Pedestrian access in these sections will remain available but will be slightly diverted, however on street parking will be unavailable.

Piritahi will stop construction work in the neighbourhood on Wednesday 23 December 2020, starting again on Tuesday 5 January 2021.

Oranga Development Information Centre

ORANGA DEVELOPMENT PROJECT UPDATE 26 Kāinga Ora state homes have been removed, making way for around 51 new state homes as part of Stage 1. Construction of the first state homes is complete and the remaining homes are due to be completed by mid-2021.

Stage 2 demolition is underway with 62 houses already removed, and construction has commenced on some of the new homes. Around 150 state homes will be built as part of Stage 2.

Stage 3 will see more state housing being built as well as the first new market homes, including more affordable homes, available to buy off the plan. Stage 3 house removals and civils works are expected to begin this month.

At this stage, all plans are indicative only and we will keep you updated if there are any changes to the current plan.

Community Liaison Advisor for Piritahi

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR ROLE? I love the variation in the work I do, and the range of different people I get to talk to every day.

WHAT DOES THE ROLE OF COMMUNITY LIAISON ADVISOR (CLA) INVOLVE? My role as a CLA is to foster relationships between Piritahi and all of the different stakeholders who make up the community, so that we can navigate neighbourhood redevelopment together over the coming years. Day-to-day, this involves communicating upcoming construction works to the neighbourhood, and voicing community concerns or ideas back to our construction team.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING TO DO OUTSIDE OF THE OFFICE? Getting out and enjoying our beautiful country! When I’m not at work you’ll finding me camping, tramping or relaxing at the beach with friends.
