STAGE ONE LAND BLESSING Partnering with mana whenua and paying respect to the people, culture, land and homes across Mangere is an integral part of the Mangere Development journey. Recently, local iwi Te Ākitai Waiohua led a karakia to bless the area around Mayflower Close and Henwood Road, the first stage of the Aorere development.

The dawn blessing was attended by a small group including members of the Mangere Development team and Piritahi, our civil works partner.

Aorere Development Progress Update

House removals underway

C

After delaying our start by one week in response to COVID-19, we recently began removing the first Stage One state houses between Henwood Road and Mayflower Close. A large number of these homes will be refurbished and repurposed elsewhere for whānau in urgent need of a warm, dry, safe place to live.

This also means we’re able to divert the waste away from landfill, so it’s a win/win.

Our house removal contractors remove the houses at night with a traffic management plan in place to help minimise disruption, and we expect the first round of removals to be completed in October.

Farewelling these homes brings mixed emotions for the neighbourhood. We’ve had residents tell us it’s sad to see these houses move out of the area as they’ve been homes to families for many years – but they’re also excited about the new homes, the first of which will start being built next year. Most of the tenants who have been rehoused are still living within Mangere.

Across the Mangere Development, 2,700 old state homes will be replaced with approximately 10,000 new, warm, dry homes.

To do this, we need to build up and not out, which is why we remove the homes rather than refurbishing them on site. For example, our newly completed Bader-McKenzie complex in Mangere has replaced 16 old state homes with 65 brand new ones. This has allowed us to significantly increase the number of quality new homes to families who need them.

Civils starting this month Land remediation and civil works for Stage 1 of the development are scheduled to begin in October. This involves working to make the land safe to build on as well as laying the foundations for the supporting infrastructure, like roads, stormwater, and sewer management. This work is to prepare the land to build and live on.

These civil works mean residents will notice more construction activity in the Stage One area around Mayflower Close and Henwood Road. While we are in the neighbourhood we will do our best to operate as good neighbours and minimise disruption, and will only operate during consented hours of construction.

If there is a requirement to close roads or footpaths to accommodate truck movements or upgrade infrastructure, we will use an approved traffic management plan.

MEET TANA FROM PIRITAHI PIRITAHI COMMUNITY LIAISON ADVISOR FOR MANGERE

What does your role involve?

My role as Community Liaison Advisor involves communicating and engaging with the community and relevant stakeholders around the specifics of the Piritahi civils programme, and supporting local engagement with the construction programme. I’m the first port of call for enquiries and issues relating to the construction and civil work in the neighbourhood.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I enjoy being out and about in the community, talking to people and problem solving. I love people and I also love chatting, and this role provides me with plenty of opportunity to do both.

What were you doing previously?

Prior to this I was the Business Manager at The 312 Hub in Onehunga, working with youth and supporting them in their creative fields.

What do you like doing outside of the office?

In no particular order, my favourite things to do are go to the gym, bake and spend time with my daughter.

Spending time with my daughter looks like baking, going to the park, bike rides, visiting family and friends… she asks me 21 questions and I manage to answer about two of them!
