MANGERE WEST INFORMATION DAY A GREAT SUCCESS More than 100 people attended the final Mangere West Information Day for 2019. Held on a sunny Saturday on November 30, locals enjoyed a free sausage sizzle, hot coffee and ice cream, and some attendees even took part in a dance competition with Kāinga Ora staff, much to everyone’s entertainment.

Meanwhile, the kids were kept busy by Time to Thrive Cycle Trust. It was fantastic to see the kids, many of whom had never ridden before, whizzing and wobbling around on bikes provided by the Trust. As well as teaching them how to ride, there were lessons on bike safety and helmet giveaways too, and luckily Mr Whippy was on hand to reward all of that hard work with a cold treat!

The Info Day was also a fundraising opportunity for Mangere Plunket. Attendees gave a donation and entered the draw to win a car seat by signing up to our newsletter.

Congratulations to our lucky winner Rocky Tioriorri and thank you to everyone who contributed on the day.

As always, the Mangere Development team was on hand to answer questions from the community and share information about the development including a progress update. Locals expressed a keen interest in the homes coming up for sale in the neighbourhood, and the team shared some helpful information for first home buyers on how to get started on their home ownership journey.

Mangere Development team hits the Kai Night Market The Mangere Development team attended the Kai Night Market on Thursday 23 January to support our local food vendors, enjoy the atmosphere and taste some delicious indigenous home cooking such as luau pies, chop suey and more. In particular, it was great fun watching the Auckland Community Garden Trusts live cooking demonstrations, turning fresh produce from the community garden into stir fries and curries for people to try.

As always, the team enjoyed chatting with visitors about the exciting changes coming to Mangere West. It was encouraging to hear lots of positive feedback from the community and answer people’s questions about how to get started on the home buying journey and what affordability options will be available for buyers.

Community Christmas and Cook Islands event The Mangere Development team wrapped up 2019 by supporting Mangere’s Christmas in the Car Park - an annual event celebrating Cook Islands culture, a vibrant part of the Mangere community.

The atmosphere was buzzing with high energy entertainment and community spirit. The Time to Thrive Cycle Trust held bike activities and giveaways for kids, there was plenty of free food and lots of great entertainment including DJs, rappers, dancers and the amazing Cook Islands dance group Pa’Seafika Rim Productions organised by Kāinga Ora.

Mangere West Development Progress Update Stage 1 of the development is well underway.

The building of the new state homes on the corner of Bader Drive and McKenzie Road have an anticipated completion date of mid-2020, while 15 state houses on Bader Drive and Ventura Street have now been completed. Tenants on Ventura Street have been enjoying their new homes.

The first market and affordable homes to be built as part of Stage 1 are expected to begin in August 2020.

Stage 2 will see a further 195 healthy homes delivered, 62 of which will be new warm, dry state homes and 133 of which will be market and more affordable homes.

What do you love most about the Samoan community or Samoan culture?

Va (relationships) is a beautiful part of being Samoan— that is, knowing who you are, knowing your place, and knowing where you stand in relation to your family, your church, your community and in society. And of course understanding all of this requires ‘language’ as the key.

Language is the key to relationships, and this is very much part of the Samoan DNA.

What are the benefits of embracing Samoan language at home and in the community?

I think there’s an absolute need to support Samoan language and culture in all aspects of our lives, because to know your language and culture is to know your identity.

Samoan is now a global language and it’s especially important for NZ born Samoan children to remain connected to their ancestral links. We really need to ensure our older generations are passing cultural knowledge and language down to following generations deliberately and intentionally.

Finally, can you tell us your favourite Samoan proverb and what it means?

“Ole ala i le pule o le tautua” which means, “the pathway to leadership is through service” and when said in Samoan is a great teacher of humility and leadership.

What does your role involve?

My role involves working with the Mangere community to strengthen the connection between the people and the place they call home. Examples of this could include supporting the community in developing a community garden or activating a green space area that is currently underutilised.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

Being able to listen, support and deliver on ideas that the community have to help shape and enhance their surrounding place.

What did you do before joining Kāinga Ora?

I was a youth worker and residential team leader for five years, working alongside young men and women in the youth justice system. I’ve also worked within the West Auckland community for many years helping deliver a number of leadership, holiday and sports programmes and being a part of a working group to reignite the Waitakere Rangers Tag region.

What’s the best part about the Mangere community? Are you a Mangere local?

Unfortunately, I’m not a Mangere local however like many other communities, the best part about Mangere is its people and the passion they have to making their community the best that it can be.

What is your future vision of Mangere?

What’s your hope for this community?

My goal is really to help support Mangere residents to deliver on what their own vision and hopes are for their own community.

What’s your favourite thing to do outside of the office?

Spending quality time with my family and friends.
