MANGERE COLLEGE 50TH JUBILEE April will be a milestone month for Mangere College as the school, in the heart of Mangere Development on Bader Drive, celebrates its 50th jubilee. Tom Webb, principal of Mangere College says “We’re really keen to hear from ex-students for the jubilee and have them share their knowledge and experience to help us support our current students.”

Infrastructure work in the neighbourhood As you will be aware, Stage 1 and 2 civil works are well underway in the neighbourhood as part of Kāinga Ora’s delivery of more warm, dry homes to the area. These works are part of the preparation to get sites ready and put the supporting infrastructure in place before construction of the new homes begins.

This major infrastructure work involves upgrading water supply, stormwater and wastewater pipes, and where necessary upgrading and repairing the road surface and curbs to better serve the needs of existing and future residents. In time, we will also be adding new streetlights and street trees (along the berm) where possible. The stormwater work is to address existing drainage issues at Tararata Creek while minimising ecological impacts on the waterway, and reduce the impact of surface-flooding on some properties in the neighbourhood.

Although these upgrades are necessary and important, we are very aware that the machinery and equipment used to carry out the work can be noisy and disruptive, particularly at a time when more families may have been at home. There may also be times when access to driveways is temporarily restricted or closed, which can be inconvenient.

If you are concerned about accessing your home through the construction activity in the street, we encourage you to please speak with our site staff. They are there to help, and are happy to support safe access to and from home for you and your whānau.

MANGERE WEST DEVELOPMENT PROGRESS UPDATE Stage 1 development on the southern side of Tararata Creek is well underway with the civil works expected to be completed by the end of the year. » 80 new state homes have been completed and occupied, and a further 61 new state homes will be underway as part of Stage 1 by the end of the year. » The first market and affordable (KiwiBuild) homes are now under construction with the first homes expected to be completed by the end of the year. » We’re expecting to be underway with 165 new market and affordable homes by the end of the year in Stage 1.

Stage 2 development is progressing well on the northern side of Tararata Creek with civil works expected to complete early 2022. » State housing construction to commence June 2021.

Approximately 58 new state homes will be underway as part of Stage 2 by the end of the year. » Stage 2 will involve the delivery of 131 new market and affordable homes. The first of these homes will be under construction in the second half of the year.

As part of stormwater works to manage rainfall runoff and control flooding, new outfalls are currently under construction along the Tararata Creek. We are taking this opportunity to provide ecological improvements and provide new native planting along the creek’s edge.

As the Development Manager, it’s my role to lead the delivery of the Mangere West development. This involves working closely with our partners including mana whenua, Council and the community to develop a plan for the neighbourhood that reflects the needs of the area.

We then work with our designers and contractors to obtain consents and deliver on the masterplan. I am fortunate enough to be supported by an awesome team who provide advice throughout this process.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I enjoy the process of working with community and our delivery partners to help make an already great neighbourhood even greater by upgrading infrastructure, increasing housing and improving important amenities like parks and greenspace. There’s something special about seeing something that has existed only as a drawing for years come to fruition.

What do love most about the Mangere community?

I love the diversity and the passion of the community.

The Mangere markets are one of the best places to see this (and to grab some kai!).

What were you doing previously?

Although I’ve only recently joined the Mangere whānau, I’ve been working both indirectly and directly with Kāinga Ora for the last four years. I started with two years as a civil engineer working as a consultant to Kāinga Ora on our projects in Mount Roskill. As my passion for the project grew (and as I started getting bored of pipes and roads!), I jumped over to the Kāinga Ora team as a project manager where I worked on the Roskill South and Waikōwhai projects over the last two years.

What do you like doing outside of the office?

I’m always after a challenge, whether it’s climbing a mountain, running a marathon or trying to stand up for more than two seconds on a surfboard. I’m also into live music and enjoy spending time with friends and family.
