AORERE INFORMATION EVENTS A GREAT START TO THE YEAR We started 2020 with two well-attended information events for Aorere locals.

Aorere Info Evening

Our first information event for the year kicked off on Wednesday 29 January at the EFKS Church.

Around 80 residents attended the evening which was warmly hosted by Reverend Pouesi. Members of the Mangere Development were also in attendance, sharing important information about the changes coming to Aorere including the types of homes being built and what state housing tenants can expect over the course of the development.

Residents had lots of positive feedback to share with the team and were especially interested in how local amenities would be improved and when and how they could buy new homes.

Questions and answers from the evening were recorded on display boards for use at the following Information Day for Aorere. These boards are on display at the Mangere Development Information Centre.

Aorere Info Day

On Saturday 22 February, 30-40 locals braved the stormy weather to attend the Aorere Information Day at Kingsford Primary.

Residents enjoyed great music and a free sausage sizzle while chatting with members of the Mangere Development team about the changes happening in Aorere. Topics included construction work in the neighbourhood, how to buy a KiwiBuild home, and training and employment opportunities through Kāinga Ora’s Construction Plus programme.

The kids also had a fantastic time, eating ice cream and jumping on the bouncy castle. A special thanks to Time to Thrive Trust for the kids’ bike giveaways on the day.

What about the tenants of existing homes?

The development work in Aorere will require a number of households to relocate so that older state homes can be replaced with new warm, dry, healthy homes designed for modern life. Relocating can be disruptive and a common concern for our tenants is the prospect of moving to a new neighbourhood, away from their community, their schools and their work.

Should a tenant need to relocate, our Tenancy Liaison Team will be on hand to assist them through the relocation process.

This includes finding them an alternative home that’s suited to their needs and abilities. Mobility issues, proximity to local and tertiary education facilities, and access to jobs and medical services are all taken into consideration.

Our tenants have the choice to return Kāinga Ora has a ‘Choice to Return’ policy for our state home tenants. This means that if a tenant is relocated as part of our development work and would like to be rehoused in their current community, Kāinga Ora will try to make this happen.

» WHAT IF KĀINGA ORA CAN’T FIND A SUITABLE HOME IN THE TENANT’S COMMUNITY OF CHOICE? If we cannot find a suitable home within the community straight away, Kāinga Ora relocates tenants into a temporary home while we continue our search. Tenants will receive progress updates from Kāinga Ora every six months until we find them a permanent home suited to their needs.

» DO TENANTS GET TO ACCEPT OR DECLINE A PROPERTY? As with any rehousing initiative, tenants are given the chance to view and accept a property before committing to a permanent residency.

» WHO DOES THE POLICY APPLY TO? The Choice to Return is open to all tenants rehoused due to redevelopment of their home.

If you’re a Kāinga Ora tenant and you have questions relating to our ‘Choice to Return’ policy or our tenancy relocation process, please contact your Tenancy Liaison Officer. For general questions regarding your tenancy, contact Kāinga Ora customer service on 0800 801 601.

Kāinga Ora also arranges the relocation and covers all reasonable costs related to the move. Any tenancy relocations or changes will always be in accordance with current Residential Tenancy Act law and regulations.

The development work in Aorere will take place in five stages over the next five years. Our current focus is on Stage 1 design, and we are continuing to progress site investigations in the area.

Our Tenancy Liaison team has been working closely with tenants who are relocating as part of stage one of the development. We are also assessing the condition of old state houses in the area. Where possible, Kāinga Ora will recondition and relocate these homes to other sites. If a house cannot be relocated it will be demolished or deconstructed so that its materials can be recycled or upcycled.

Our investigation work and our learnings from stage one will help to inform the key dates for Stages 2 to 5.

What do you love most about the Samoan community or Samoan culture?

Va (relationships) is a beautiful part of being Samoan— that is, knowing who you are, knowing your place, and knowing where you stand in relation to your family, your church, your community and in society. And of course understanding all of this requires ‘language’ as the key.

Language is the key to relationships, and this is very much part of the Samoan DNA.

What are the benefits of embracing Samoan language at home and in the community?

I think there’s an absolute need to support Samoan language and culture in all aspects of our lives, because to know your language and culture is to know your identity.

Samoan is now a global language and it’s especially important for NZ born Samoan children to remain connected to their ancestral links. We really need to ensure our older generations are passing cultural knowledge and language down to following generations deliberately and intentionally.

Finally, can you tell us your favourite Samoan proverb and what it means?

“Ole ala i le pule o le tautua” which means, “the pathway to leadership is through service” and when said in Samoan is a great teacher of humility and leadership.

MEET ALBERT WIPANI COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AND ENGAGEMENT COORDINATOR FOR MANGERE

What does your role involve?

My role involves talking to our community, finding out what concerns they may have and seeing what we can do to support them. You’ll often find me at the library, local Mangere community events or at the Mangere Info centre with maps, pamphlets and feedback boards sharing important information about the development.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

He tangata, he tangata, he tangata (the people, the people, the people).

What were you doing previously?

I’ve worked in many different fields such as AOD (alcohol and other drug) services, mental health, community engagement, Iwi development, housing, social work and as a business owner. I’m grateful for every opportunity as they’ve all given me the ability to add to my kite.

What do you love about Aorere?

Aorere has a unique community of Pacific language hubs, active churches, amazing local schools, awesome Thai food…and the cheapest movie tickets (at the dairy)!

I love how the community want to be involved in the work we are doing, and they’re also keen to look to the future and learn about how they can purchase a home within the neighbourhood.
