Twilight – Schumann Songs / Ian Bostridge; Saskia Giorgini

Twilight is the third album of tenor Ian Bostridge and pianist Saskia Giorgini, dedicated to Robert Schumann song cycles, all written in the miraculously productive year of 1840. The album title and cover photography were inspired by the song Zwielicht, which, together with Mondnacht from the same Op. 39 cycle, is often considered to be the epitome of German nineteenth-century Romanticism. It is also a fitting metaphor for Schumann’s troubled soul, constantly oscillating between light and dark, between hope and despair. Ian Bostridge is one of the most celebrated tenors and lied interpreters of his generation. (Pentatone) 1CD# PTC5187162 $17.99

Handel in Rome / Dunedin Consort; John Butt

“You could say that Rome was the making of Handel. Even if the youthful works he wrote there aren’t now among his best known, they show him beginning to create the kind of complex, involving and contradictory characters that would light up his later operas. Three of his cantatas here get the best of advocacy from the Dunedin Consort, conducted by John Butt.” – The Guardian (Linn)

Gipps: Orchestral Works, Vol. 3 / Rumon Gamba; BBC PO

“Here, in the symphony’s first recording, the BBC Philharmonic does full justice to a work of ambitious scope – an early showcase for the blend of fluent lyricism and muscular rhythmic drive, untroubled by fashion, that would continue into Gipps’s later works. One of the most striking of those is the 1968 Horn Concerto she wrote for her son, engagingly played here by Martin Owen.” – The Guardian (Chandos)

“What impresses me most of all is how beautiful the music is and how eclectic. American Voices / Pacifica Quartet; Uniting Voices

“Affectionately and adroitly played, theirs is a very impressive performance indeed, with buoyantlysprung rhythms underscoring the folkish elements of this much oversubscribed work to the degree that virtually every bar sounds freshlyminted. “This a superb interpretation of Parry’s first major choral work on Shelley’s radical poem. References to Wagner and Brahms belie Parry’s own radicalism and an Englishness.
