SNIPPETS For this assignment I had a list of quotes in my phone where I took a few of my favorites and recreated them. The top one is my favorite, I like the illustration that I drew in the back and I like the style that I did the quote in.

The second one I tried to make a little more collage-esk. This one also required some photo shop skills as I had to make it look like a baked potato was actually on the oyster.

Overall, this wasn’t very hard I just had to use the burn tool in order to get the shading to look right.

The neon sign one was probably the easiest to make as all I had to really do was add different glows and drop shadows to type. I tried to make it look like it was on top of a brick wall in order to make it pass as an actual sign.

This is the sketch and first draft for a poster. Right now I am unsure how I feel about the style. I tried to do a sort of surreal kina of style but one of my original plans didn’t work very well. I am wondering whether I should take some real pictures and recreate this instead of drawing it. I do really like the concept though, just needs some tweaking in my opinion.

So I completely changed my idea after the draft critiques and focused on more of a happier feel. I attached the original concept as well but here are a few other ideas for layout. I posed and took a photo of myself and then drew over some parts of it and incorporated the ‘serial killer’ letters as it fit the vibe to me

logos

As I work on my character logos I have been mainly focusing on creative ways to highlight their character. The two that I chose are Elle Woods and Walter White, I really wanted to chose to contrasting characters as it will challenge me the most.

Things I am paying attention too in my designs are how well the logo will work at different sizes, can the logo be simplified for social media/ small sizes, and how well the logo flows.

Once I added color to the walter white one I don’t really like how the original lettering works. I think I am going to end up tweaking the concept a little to better match what I want. Both of these are very rough drafts and I am going to end up doing hand lettering for the Elle Woods one unless I can find a font that seems suiting.

Both of these will look so much better with some more rendering.

For my final designs I decided that I was going to have the smallest size be a more simplified version of the logo. With the original two logos they work well at a larger size but when they are minimized they become less readable to a majority of viewers. I kept the main basics of the main logo,

in this case the initials of their name, and used them to make the simplified version. For the Elle Woods one the circle shape from her perfume bottle was used in the minimized version, and for the Walter White one the triangular beaker with the tube was incorporated in the minimized version.

Syntax Rectangluar shape, rounded edges for safety, short in height for easy access, removable sticker with information. Very plain but easy and convienient.

Syntax Simple two-toned look, partially opaque flap separating the inside from the outside, covered, more of a rectangular dome shape, classier.

Syntax Fake green plant,litter portion is nicely shaped to look like a vase, very nice looking, looks like decor, opening is faced away from spaces.

Syntax Very round in shape, robatic looking, very futuristic and clean, has an opening that closes to upon exit and entry to keep smells trapped, self cleans.

process book

This is the beginning of my process book. In this progress book I want to take a more abstract approach to the overall style and fonts. I do plan on having the pages with work on them be a little less crazy and abstract but still want it to match the feel of the more busy pages.

When working on my progress book I decided that I was going to switch the fonts that I decided to use. I went from helvetica nue to courier new and then for my more abstract font (backspacer ot) I switcher it from the circle style to the square style which to me, fits the stuff that I have in my book more then before.

REFLECTION Overall I enjoyed the projects that this class included, they were not similar to ones that I have had to do in the past.

One thing that I tried to do more of in this class was to experiment more with color as I don’t usually try anything new with it. When working on these projects I typically went between applications, mainly three of them which were Procreate, Illustrator, and InDesign.

Before this semester I was not really familiar with InDesign and needed to use it for other classes as well so the use of it throughout these projects really helped. One thing that I liked was being able to incorporate more illustration within my work, a lot of work that I have had to do in the past didn’t really leave room for illustration to be combine with typography. Yea, I ended up designing illustrative aspects but I never incorporated straight up illustrations into my work before. I did enjoy the class and the projects, it allowed me to be able explore a lot of new styles.
