Unintentional Registrations Year 3 Project 1_2018

Reacting to a brief based on mankind’s relationship to the feral ground, the project was a monument built to collect material data based on the unintentional registrations of the world around it, as equally legitimate as the active registrations of the historically wealthy. The proposal explores different rates of decay in materials and how the physical presence of a passers-by, weather, or wildlife can be impressed onto receptive structures.

The Theatrics of Paper Year 3 Project_2019

Set in the ruins of a Roman amphitheatre in Lyon, the project proposes a modern, alternative theatre experience by creating visual moments of performative disruption within a theatre, whereby the audience is presented to itself, blurring the boundary between performance and reality. The building mirrors and divides these brief moments of objectification and voyeurism by layering the typologies of theatre and set production.

Paper elements of the architecture and the stage are cast within the various programmed spaces, further subverting the role of the audience into having an active involvement with the theatres development, expansion and deterioration. The cast paper elements go on to become structural, decorative and screening elements of the building.

The project relied heavily on material testing to develop a unique method of paper craft that utilises the absorptive properties of plaster moulds into the process of casting paper.

Similarly to slip casting, the plaster draws the moisture from the pulp like water from slip. This hybrid process allows for an accelerated production of threedimensional, rigid paper forms.

The exploration matured into attempting to push past the two-dimensional nature of paper, through the introduction of drastically different paper thickness within the same piece. Columns, walls and screens are merged into one structure.

Two-part dies are lined with thin layers of paper on either side before being filled with pulp, the two moulds are then pressed into one another to produce the form as it dries. The plaster remains unchanged and is ready to receive the next round of paper casting.

The material tests resulted in rethinking the building through the programmatic application of the reconstitution of paper throughout the theatre, designing spaces within the building to be a form-work onto itself. Steel rods and reinforcement are cast directly into the pulp similarly to concrete, these rods are then hoisted upwards allowing any remaining water to drain back down into the casting pit.

This model is the culmination of my continued exploration of the conditions of my third year site ‘Amphithéâtre des Trois Gaules’. Using the advancement of techniques in paper casting as a means to reapproach the site afresh, this 1:150 scale model was commenced as a test bed to develop aspects of my project into a more mature proposal established around enhancing the city of Lyon’s communal pride in the ruin and weighing its impact on the historic landscape.

‘DTLA Sixth Street Bridge’ Year 2 Project 1_2017

In April 2016, the iconic 6th Street Bridge is demolished. However, within Google maps, the bridge exists in a glitched state between built and destroyed. Here the past and the present still survive together, separated only by one step in Street View, the bridge will spontaneously drift in and out of existence. The project uses this hybrid state of existence as inspiration to challenge the solidity of the built environment.

One-to-one replicas of destroyed and forgotten urban fragments are re-fabricated from their corrupted virtual online existence in this project which further investigates the spatial potential of digital hybrid states. The museum constructed according to their glitch logic houses these artefacts, captured within a state of construction and deconstruction.

Piscina Mirabilis Competition_2020

A proposal for a temporary Contemporary Art Museum, housed within the ruins of an ancient Roman cistern.

Aiming at the promotion of communal pride and engagement with a hidden heritage site through its exposure; the project explored methods of sensitive layering through the appropriation of common types of structural consolidation.

Installing an open system of platforms and screens within a rigid grid evoking the ephemerality of the scaffold with the stability of the armature.

Concrete Cotton Competition_2020

A bench proposal for LFA, inspired by the rich shipping history of the Royal Docks, where cargo of different sizes, textures and materials passed through daily. The playfulness of these now peculiar looking objects forms the foundation of this modular bench, which can be reconfigured into different settings for play, rest and gathering.

Wa On Lane Terraces Competition_2020

The proposal set out to amplify and re-imagine the manner in which a public space can step up following the intense topography of Central Hong Kong. Creating a circulation framework in which miniaturised typologies of public space such as a square or a basketball court can be suspended within the narrow spaces left behind within Hong Kong’s dense urban fabric.

I have been heavily involved in large-scale projects throughout work-stage 2, moving between Microstation, Revit, Rhino and Adobe Creative Suite, working on 3D modelling and visualisation. I was mainly involved in two large projects - a student housing project in Birmingham and a government office complex in Croydon. Both large-scale projects heavily involved thorough investigation into facade systems to attempt to subdivide large masses into visually appealing rhythms that matched the existing urban grain.

The process involved constant back-and-forth between 3D modelling onto structural systems, 2D drawings and detailed studies of joinery.

Architectural Assistant Studio DERA The proposal is a spriritual centre involving a new-build extension and the renovation of a listed private residence in Hampstead.

The multi-stage project is being run in overlapping phases some of which are currently in Work Stage 3 and one of which is moving into Work Stage 4. The new-build is a stone-masonry building that required innovative detailing and careful design decisions that allowed the stone building to sit comfortably within the conservation area.

The yoga studio is part of the spiritual centre and sits amongst the curated, naturalistic landscape within the garden. The client specified a minimal structure that provided a direct relationship with the outdoor environment and the ability for the space to open out into the landscape depending on the season. A lightweight timber structure perches off a brick wall and tapers into a thin edge to visually lighten the ‘floating’ roof.

‘Afterimage’

Exhibition Design for Kaori Homma - 2019 Sited within St Georges chapel in Romney Marsh, near Dungeness B Power Station, the installation was commissioned to hold up a series of fire etchings by artist Kaori Homma who’s work explores the paradoxical relationship between humanity and the environment.

Due to the fragile and decayed nature of the site I chose to deploy 3D scanning as a non intrusive method surveying the interior.

A series of armatures were designed in response to the physical features of the space, removing the need for any permanent fixtures, thereby leaving the fabric of the building untouched
