February holds many events; it is also The Big Game month and Enlisted and Officers’ Clubs are hosting parties, so don’t forget to wear your jersey and put your game face on! Get your beads out and rock them for Mardi Gras at the Officers’ Club and celebrate Fat Tuesday on a Friday and eat some king cake. There’s more! This month is the first ever February Fury Smash Bros Tournament. Show off your gaming skills and head over to the Schilling Community Center for a friendly competition of Super Smash Bros and win $5k worth in prizes.
What I’m most excited about is whale watching and cherry blossoms! Watch the whales as they rise to the surface with ITT and the Marina! These humpback whales migrate to the waters of Okinawa during the fall and winter so be sure to take advantage of this amazing opportunity! You can even take your loved one on this trip as their Valentine’s Day present! What better present can you give than the gift of experience!
If you want to see the ever-majestic Cherry Blossoms or “Sakura,” they are still in bloom! Okinawa is the first place to witness this fleeting beauty in Japan so say hello to Spring with these delicate, pink flowers everywhere surrounding the island before they wilt. Get your cameras ready and capture Instagramworthy photos as you tour Sakura sights only with ITT.
No matter what you end up doing this Valentine’s Day, I hope it is filled with happiness and love! Whether you plan on celebrating love month with your loved one, friends, family, or with your fur babies, Kadena FSS is here to make it extra special for you! Don’t forget to remain thankful no matter the circumstances coming your way! Till next month!

          @shotsbyheynuh

This month’s edition of #FindSomethingSpecial is a mix of activities you can enjoy on this beautiful island. We wanted to highlight different aspects of Okinawa that many people are interested to venture out on whenever they visit a new place, let alone a different country. From food, attractions, to water or land activities, this island has got it all; waiting for you to explore with your friends and family.
@shotsbyheynuh’s photo features her gorgeous babies posing in front of a Pokémon Poké Ball while enjoying the lights and attractions at the Southeast Botanical Garden Illuminations. She made sure to dress them up to match the Pokémon themed section of the garden. We love how the lights illuminate baby Pikachu sitting on the grass coming out of the Poké Ball while “Ash” waits outside. Want cute photos like this? Head to the Southeast Botanical Garden Illuminations now!

@purely_pam and her family pose for a photo in front of this cute, pink vending machine door that leads to an aesthetic café in Naha City. This photo is one of many that shows how artistic and creative Japan is when it comes to the little things – even with an entrance of a café! This inspired us to think outside the box more! Only in Okinawa can you open a vending machine that leads you to a new world! You never know where a hidden door takes you!

@allredabroad dove into the Okinawa marine life and spotted a sea turtle! She didn’t think twice and swam closer to it to capture this amazing photo featuring the clear waters of the island as the sun shines all the way to the bottom of the ocean. I love how this photo displays her diving into the water to witness the amazing sea life Okinawa has in store for all of us!

Humpback whales travel from the northern seas of Russia and Alaska (5,600 miles) to give birth to their calves in the warm waters surrounding Okinawa and the Kerama Islands. Many grow up to be 50’ long and weigh up to 30 tons. We’ll take you out to sea to get close to these gentle giants. Ages 3 & under are not allowed on the boat due to safety precautions.

    VENTURE | KADENAFSS.COM 28 TRAVEL
If you’re like me and have an endless list of places and restaurants you’d like to visit during your time here in Okinawa, then you know how challenging it can be planning your trips. When it comes to going on adventures, exploring, and making memories, Kadena Information, Tickets & Travel will get you the most without having to break the bank. It is a one-stop shop for all of your adventures – whether you want to explore Okinawa or mainland Japan. They offer great deals on a wide variety of tickets, local tours, hotels, off-island tour packages, Tokyo attractions, and more! One of the many major attractions this winter is the Ryukyu Lantern Festival.

February in Okinawa means an abundance of fun outdoor and indoor adventures to undertake. Instead of snowfall, this majestic island embraces the cool breeze by illuminating the night sky with colorful glowing Chinese lanterns. Illuminations are offered throughout the island, but one of the wellregarded in people’s list this time of year is the Ryukyu Lantern Festival. Located in Murasaki Mura Ryukyu Kingdom Theme Park, the festival features 3,000 luminous lanterns that create a whimsical ambience for visitors to enjoy and capture. It is like walking through a magical pathway that leads to a world full of warm shining lanterns.

Article by Janelle Rivera | Photos by Jamie Acton Design by Yuka Kinjo
This is the eighth year Okinawa is headlining the Ryukyu Lantern Festival at a historic location that derived from the Ryukyu Dynasty period. The history of the Ryukyu Kingdom is something Okinawans are prideful of, and what more to celebrate their yesteryears than to offer a fun way to enjoy the cool winter with warm lit lanterns. It offers an entertaining atmosphere while literally walking through history. The best way to learn, in my opinion.
The festival not only features the typical shaped lanterns, but locals also craft their own. Some build uniquely shaped ones like animals, their favorite characters, and more. These handmade lanterns are displayed in a special area in the park for people to view and vote for. A winner is then picked where he/she is rewarded a Gold “Grand” Prize and gains the title of the year’s Lantern Object Contest Winner. Festivities also include several live performances on a radiant stage and food vendors who serve delicacies such as Okinawan soba, chicken skewers, and more. It doesn’t stop there! You can even try your hands at creating your own lantern with their washipaper, a traditional Japanese paper.
I personally checked the Ryukyu Lantern Festival off of my list this year! I was excited to see the lanterns in person and experience the atmosphere everyone is fussing about. And boy, were they right! Amazing can’t even begin to describe how magical it was. The park was easy to find and parking was available right across the street where you’ll go through an indoor souvenir shop and right out the ticketing office and entrance. With tickets in my hands I purchased from ITT, I was able to skip the line and go right inside.

As the moon kindles the night, the lanterns slowly filled the park with bright, warm, and red lanterns creating a fascinating scene. The lanterns left me speechless and in awe; my jaw literally dropped, and I couldn’t stop smiling. I loved seeing the decorations that filled the park in every corner. I made sure to bring my camera and capture as many memories as I can with my family and friends. Having them there made the experience so much more fun and exciting.
If you want to see the lanterns before they take flight for the year, leave it to ITT to plan your excursion so you can enjoy your time, stress-free. Tour the park, vote for the best and unique handmade lanterns, chow down on local delicacies, and most of all, enjoy the lanterns and views with family and friends.

Exploring in a different country can be stressful with the language barrier, and the stress of wanting to go everywhere but don’t know where to start. It is vital for hikers to be aware of the challenges before their excursion up the legendary Mt. Fuji. The average temperature at the summit is 40°F during midsummer! Temperatures plummet even lower during nights and mornings, so make sure to wear warm clothing.

In a single day’s trip, you will ascend 1,471 meters in about 7 hours. With elevation that high, some hikers may experience altitude sickness. This is due to the decrease in oxygen at high altitudes.
Outdoor Recreation is here to support your training needs before this summer’s annual trip! We recommend these ODR activities this month to prepare you for the climb:

Setsubun: Happy First Day of Spring!

    Article by Janelle Rivera

It’s time to blossom because it’s Springtime in Okinawa – per the old Japanese calendar! Before we enjoy the blooms and fresh breeze outdoors, our usual ritual to celebrate the rebirth season is to spring clean. So, it’s time to dust, sweep, mop, vacuum, and rid your home with unwanted things you have accumulated from the season prior. While we’re busy with cleaning, Japan has their own tradition in welcoming the season.
“Setsubun,” translated as seasonal division, is celebrated the day before the beginning of Spring according to the Japanese lunar calendar. This year, Setsubun will be observed on February 3. Traditions in celebrating this particular festival have changed throughout the years; all for the purpose of driving away evil spirits from people’s homes, buildings, temples, and shrines. Long ago, Setsubun was observed by generating noise from drums, burning dried sardine heads, or burning wood. The noise coming from the drums, the smell from the burned dried sardine heads, and the smoke from the burning of the woods were said to drive away evil spirits.
In present day, traditions are carried out in different ways but mostly with bean throwing, which emerged in the eighth century. Citizens throw roasted beans around their homes, starting off in the room farthest from the front door. Windows are to be left open while performing the ritual so evil spirits who bring misfortune and bad health can leave the premises. Small children participate by throwing beans at someone who is cloaked as an evil spirit or “oni demon.” They shout “Oni wa Soto, Fuku wa Uchi!” which means “Demons out, fortune in!” while dispersing the beans around their homes. Temples and shrines also observe this holiday with bean throwing ceremonies for people to participate in.
Another widely practiced custom in celebration of Setsubun is the eating of “Ehomaki” or “Fortune Sushi Roll.” Ehomaki is a large, long sushi roll featuring seven ingredients such as tuna and egg; they use seven ingredients as the number is often affiliated with luck. Now, eating sushi during your meal is one thing, but eating Ehomaki during Setsubun has a particular directive. There is a specific cardinal direction considered to bringing you good fortune for the year, so it is said to eat your Ehomaki facing that lucky direction – without stopping. With your eyes closed while making a wish.
If you are looking to witness or participate in Setsubun this month, make sure to tag us @KadenaFSS. We would love to see the beauty of this festivity through your own lens.
