In the blink of an eye, we have suddenly fallen into shorter days and longer nights. Across Japan’s mainland and much of the world, it will soon be time for cozy sweaters, colorful foliage and fun activities like pumpkin picking and momijigari, or autumn leaf hunting. Yet here in Okinawa, summer lingers a little longer, bringing milder temperatures and perfect weather for outdoor activities.
While autumn signifies a season of change in nature, it can also serve as a metaphor for our own personal growth. Just as nature embraces this transition, we too can reflect on our own personal journey, letting go of habits and thought patterns that no longer serve us. This time of year invites introspection and renewal, encouraging us to set new goals and embark on our own paths of transformation encouraging resilience and growth.
At Kadena FSS, transformation is at the heart of everything we do. We continue to push boundaries, set ambitious goals and strive for excellence in support of our mission: taking care of service members and their families. This summer brought several notable successes, including:
• Elevated Sunday Brunch – Featured on this month’s Venture cover, this culinary experience redefined weekend dining.
• Rocker Rewards Program – A fresh initiative designed to enhance member benefits and engagement at FSS establishments.

We’re also launching a centralized catering program complete with a newly designed office suite, a portfolio of elegant event spaces and fully customizable menus including options for dietary restrictions. Kadena’s Rocker Club: A Premier Destination for Dining and Entertainment
Article by Bobbie Brock | Design by Diana López Hansen
Opened in May 2018,
The Rocker is a 71,000-square-foot facility that blends modern architecture and elegant interior design. High ceilings with streaming natural light spills into the atrium hallway of the facility, creating a welcoming atmosphere that sets the tone for one of the most beautiful club venues constructed in the Air Force!
This stunning facility proudly serves as the heart of Kadena’s uni ed rewards membership program, open to all ranks and branches of service. Inside, guests will nd Kadena’s largest gaming room, ve meeting and banquet spaces and the Rocker Lounge which hosts live music and entertainment every Friday night.
The club features two full-service restaurants and the Daily Grind co ee shop which proudly brews Starbucks co ee, serves fresh pastries from Oki Dough-Ki Bakery and o ers a variety of grab-n-go sandwiches, salads and snacks.
One of The Rocker’s not-to-be-missed events is the Elevated Sunday Brunch, a culinary a air that draws hundreds of guests every Sunday! Highlights include:
• Made-to-order omelet and Eggs Benedict stations
• Bananas Foster and Crepes Suzette prepared live
• Carving stations with premium meat selections
• Premium dessert spread
• Mimosa, Bloody Mary and Peach Bellini bars
• Kid-friendly bu et with fun and delicious options
To uncover the magic behind the Elevated Sunday Brunch, we met up with Head Chef Minoru Yagi, the mastermind behind the Rocker Club’s kitchen.
Can you walk us through a typical schedule or routine you must prepare for the Sunday Brunch?
“For our Sunday brunch, we run the best operation possible. To ensure our guests are delighted with the nest dishes and top-notch service, we start thorough preparations three days in advance.”
What are the must-try dishes from the Sunday’s brunch menu?
“Everything on the menu is recommended, but the omelet, eggs benedict and pasta station are especially popular. The carving station, fresh fruit and dessert assortments are also highly recommended.”
Tell us a bit about your culinary journey. What inspired you to become a chef?
“I started cooking at the encouragement of my mother when I was 16, aiming to become a chef. I have worked 10 years in hotels and 25 years at The Rocker.”
How would you describe your cooking style, and how does it in uence the menus here?
“My cooking style is based mainly on French and Japanese cuisine, while incorporating elements of American cuisine. My goal is to provide dishes that truly delight our guests.”
What’s one behind-the-scenes thing about the kitchen at The Rocker that people might not expect?
“The Rocker kitchen team begins preparations at 4 a.m. When serving meals for 700 to 800 people, the team works hard from ingredient preparation to delivering the dishes to our guests.”
What’s the most challenging part of preparing food for club events and special functions?
“Since The Rocker hosts many events, the motivation and team spirit of each kitchen member is essential. To make every event a success and to serve great food, I work closely with each person, maintaining communication and encouraging the team.”
Coming to The Rocker this autumn:
• A centralized catering program with a portfolio of elegant event spaces, and fully customizable menus including options for dietary restrictions.
• New monthly wine club events with exclusive access beginning in October.
There is no better time to visit The Rocker and join the new uni ed member’s program!

OKINAWAN ARCHITECTURE
For Westerners, it’s easy to categorize Japanese culture into one conglomeration. For those of us fortunate to live here long-term, unique distinctions emerge from region to region. This is especially true for Okinawa, Japan’s southernmost prefecture. One area where Okinawan culture diverges from mainland Japan is that of architecture. From concrete structures with red roofs to shisa dogs and coral stone, these facets of Ryukyuan architecture o er insight into the island’s history, while also being visually compelling.
Article by Andrew Robinson | Photography by Marina Chayka | Design by Diana López Hansen
Traditional roofs are tiled, perched atop buildings like coral-colored hats. Not only are they an instantly recognizable feature of Okinawan structures, but they’re also inextricably linked to the island’s history. During the era of the Ryukyu Kingdom, homes of the aristocratic and warrior class favored the use of these roofs. The tiles themselves are made from Okinawa mudstone and contain a high amount of iron – hence the red hue. The hardened clay was much more typhoon-resistant than the alternative of grass. During Japan’s Meiji period, Okinawan society underwent quite drastic changes. Part of this included the 1889 abolishment of a law restricting the use of red roof tiles. From this point on, tiled roo ng was the preferred method for common structures. For an example of what a home from this period looked like, the Nakamura house, constructed in the 18th century, remains remarkably intact.
While there, pay special attention to the coral limestone walls surrounding the house. These were originally installed as an early form of storm protection, highlighting the ingenuity of the early Ryukyu Kingdom.
Traveling back even further in time, the Nakagusuku Castle Ruins, located roughly 5oo meters from the Nakamura house, epitomize early Ryukyu Kingdom structures. This site, which was originally constructed around the mid-14th century, features three separate stone-laying techniques, all unique to Okinawa. The castle’s famous stone wall made it uniquely well-forti ed, allowing it to last for centuries.
Of course, no building in Okinawa would be complete without a pair of shisa dogs guarding the entrance. These characters have been a xture of Okinawan architecture since they were introduced from China centuries ago. Each set
includes a male and female dog; the male with an open mouth to ward o evil, and the female’s mouth closed to keep in good spirits. It’s not uncommon to nd shisa in gardens, or even on top of a house’s red-tiled roof.
Fast-forwarding to today, modern construction practices have transformed the aesthetic of Okinawa. Now, concrete is the pervasive building material – suitable for the strong winds that occur during typhoons. Practically, concrete keeps these structures secure, but artistically, this has given way to a more utilitarian, brutalist style. Brutalism has roots in the post-World War II era when societies across the world were rebuilding after the devastating con ict. Okinawa, which saw some of the most ferocious ghting during the war, was no exception to this worldwide trend.
A juxtaposition is felt between the island’s brutalist urban centers and its more pristine natural elements. For fans of architecture, these features are very much appreciated and even sought out. It does not take a keen eye to notice this harsh style, and luckily, Okinawa’s main island o ers several fascinating locations that exemplify modern brutalism. For a day of culture, check out the Okinawa Prefectural and Art Museum in Naha. The building itself is a visual wonder, taking design inspiration from early Ryukyu Kingdom castles. Up north, Nago City Hall is powerfully structured, and its unique design is not only fun to explore, but it makes for a rather unique backdrop for Instagram photoshoots.
Whether it’s the traditionalism from the Ryukyu Kingdom, or the boldness featured in modern design, engaging with Okinawa’s architecture is an enlightening endeavor. Learning where signature design elements originate from lends a deeper understanding of the island’s history and culture.
