a Locked In­ Ingem ar Gustafson All my life I lived in a cocoanut.

It was cramped and dark.

Especially in the morning when I shave.

But what pained me most was that I had no way to get into touch with the outside world.

If no one out there happened to find the Cocoanut, if no one cracked it, then I was doomed to live all my live in the nut, and maybe even die there.

I died in the cocoanut.

A couple of years later they found the cocoanut, cracked it, and found me shrunk and crumpled inside.

"What an accident" "If only we had found it earlier.. . " "Then maybe we could have saved him. " "maybe there are more of them locked in like that. . " "Whom we might be able to save they said, and started knocking to pieces every cocoanuts within reach.

No use! Meaningless. A waste of time!

A person who chooses to live in a cocoanut!

Such a nut is one in a million!

But I have a brother-in-law who lives in an acorn.

Union High School has had a year of tremendous per­ sonal growth and achievement in 1969-70 and that continued growth, is the years to come will be built upon the accomplishment of this year.

The challenge to grow and become a better person is ever present in our lives. A primary purpose of educa­ tion is to focus attention on the need for this personal growth and then provide the facilities, directions, and supervision so human growth and development will take place.

To these ends the administration, the superintendent, dedand principal at Mingus Union High School, are dcd icated.

It is to be hoped that every single person at Mingus

The 1969-70 Hi-Lo staff has made a big effort this year to produce the best possible yearbook. None of the staff members have worked on laying out a yearbook before, so it’s been a new experience for us all. Our photographers Wayne Pendley, Marc D'Obrenovic, and Jim Minter have given a lot of their time and effort in taking pictures of all the activities, developing them and making sure that we had them in time for the deadlines. Most people don't realize how much time it takes to make a good annual.

A project of this size requires a concentrated team effort.

The Spirit The Spirit is the official publication of Mingus. This year it came out on an erratic schedule. The staff literally fought to meet deadlines and did not usually succeed. They were also given a special working room this year, situated at the bottom of A Building under the girls' gym.

John Bernath Mingus Union's first foreign exchange student, John Bernath, comes from South Africa to spend his Senior year.

During his stay at Mingus, John became a familiar personality around town, due to his many interests in the people of the area and to his many speeches for luncheons, dinners and organizations. He entered into school activities which include participation in Student Council and social manager of the senior class. He was in the delegation that attended the Student Council Convention.

John will long be remembered by both the school and the community for his terrific personality, and his congenial attitude towards everyone.

AFS Active This Year

The AFS Club is made up of students who are willing to help raise money to support a student from a foreign country. This year the Mingus AFS members had mohey raising projects such as movies and other fund drives.

John Bernath was very active in helping the club prepare for next year and their next exchange student.

The Mingus Key Club was busy this year planning and putting projects into action. One of the projects was a drive to raise $200 for a needy family in Cottonwood. They also had a massive light bulb sale campaign. The

club made over a hundred per cent profit with their peanut machines around school. Also they cleaned the old Clarkdale High School and participated in an Elks Club-sponsored food basket drive, made up donations. *

Our cheerleaders worked hard tins year to lift the roofs with spirit. They were always the main attraction at the Pep Assemblies and did so

two of our Varsity cheerleaders tins will be the last year to cheer. We salute them in their faithfulness, for working and trying to bring as much participation and pushing the team along during the years in cheering.

Although this is the first year for all but three of the Junior Varsity cheer• leaders, they too have done very well.

Mingus Union Pep Club sponsor­ ed by Miss Evans and Miss LeVering has been very active throughout the year. They at­ tended many games and held bake sales. Homecoming brought in money by selling Mums, that were wired and sold by the club.

FTA Members Are Active The Mingus chapter of Future Teachers of America is traditionally one of the most active clubs on campus, and this year was no exception. The organization's members helped with the VISTA tutoring at Clarkdale Elemen­ tary School, held bake sales, helped with the Head Start program during the summer, sponsored a school wide assembly during which new officers and members were installed, and sold candy to raise money for the state convention in Scottsdale. The convention was the climax of an eventful year for the members. The club had a point system in which any member wishing to attend was obligated to earn a certain number of points by teach­ ing, being a teacher's aide, selling and by making the honor roll.

The club's officers for the year were Ester Ontiveros, president, Ann Wolsieffer, vice president; Shirley Cox, secretary; Debbie Coffland, treasurer; Rita Scroggins, historian; Espie Ontiveros, parliamentarian; Marian Makela, publicity chairman; and Grace Kovacavich, social manager. Sharon Cole is state historian. The club's sponsors are Miss Evans, Miss LeVering, and Mr. Henry.

Girls Athletics for the 1969-70 year includes Volleyball, Golf, Badminton, the girls meet first hour and practice the current sport. Volleyball season this year saw an improving Mingus Marauders Squad. The girls were just catching onto Power Volleyball and did a good job.

Chorus Sings and Works

I

Although Chorus is officially listed as a class here at Mingus, this year it almost took the form of a club. They held many fund-raising events, including hot dog sales in Cottonwood, and bake sales here at the school.

They entertained the entire school throughout the year at assemblies featuring both individual singers and various branches of the chorus, such as the folk singers, and the octet. Evening performances were also given at Thanksgiving and Christmas time, for the benefit of parents and music-loving inhabitants of the Verde Valley.

■ TThe F.F.A. attended the State Fair leadership conference in August, they had an open house in September which-was a success. Mr. Camp, the sponsor, went to the State Fair where some of the members judged several kinds of animals and won quite a few awards. Their scrap book won a prize at the leader­ ship conference this year.

Mingus Strives for a Perfect Season

The Mingus Marauders started out the 1969 foot­ ball season with high hopes and strong support from both students and Verde Valley citizens. As the season went on, several team members were unable to play in most games, as a result of either ineligibility or accidents on the field. The first game of the season, against Tuba City, was a vic­ tory, and helped boost spirit. The team suffered losses against Peoria, Chinle, Tolleson, Holbrook, Buckeye, and Snowflake; and beat Window Rock and Dysart. The Season record was 3-6.

The Marauders will play five more league games before they open their A north conference schedule with a two-game set with Snowflake.

These five games include triple A Prescott, defending class A champion Bourgade (two games), double A Coco­ nino and perennial league leader Holbrook.

All teams in the A North league have strong returning teams, although Holbrook again looks like a league favor­ ite. Returning regulars to the Marauder team are Skip Osborne, Grant Richmond, Dick Brown, Pat Tavasci, John Behlow, and Norman Smith. They formed the nucleus of this year's team.

Coach Holds High Hopes "A coach cannot ask for more than a promising team. Two factors which may account for our good luck was the weather conditions were so good, and the fact that individual kids proportionally are the best, " according to coach Mr. Dreitzler. Mr. Dreitzler also stated that he would like to play Prescott again even though the team lost their first game with that school.

Members of the golf team are among the top ath­ letes at Mingus. These boys practiced week nights at the Verde Valley Country Club in Clarkdale and played other golf teams throughout the state.

Coach for the team is Mr. Harkey. Mr. Harkey stated that he was very proud of die team this year, but that they are looking for more improvement.

The team is experienced. They have had much practice and good coaching.

Eleven Delegates Attend Model U.N. This year the Model U.N. program at Mingus attracted eleven juniors and seniors. Our school was given three countries to represent: Nepal, Tunisia and Somalia. This was the first year Mingus sent delegates to the Se­ curity Council. At the session, held at the University of Arizona in Tucson in December, the delegates took the positions their countries would in actuality, on topics dealing with the withdrawal of all foreign military bases from Asia, Africa and Latin America; and the problem of the apartheid policy in Namibia, the trust territory of South Africa. Guest speaker for the session was Vladimir F. Petrovsky, Russian special assistant to the U.N. undersecretary for political and social affairs. His topic was the importance of the Security Council in the United Nations. Mingus students who attended felt the program was worthwhile, not only as an opportunity to meet other students from various Arizona high schools, but also to better understand world problems. Sponsor for the pro­ gram here at Mingus is Mr. Crawford.
