Letter from the Executive Director The theme of this edition of LifeLine is A Day in the Life. We want to invite our friends and supporters, along with those of you just finding out about Canine Partners for Life, to get to know our dogs a little better on a more personal level. To that end we asked a number of our graduates, volunteers and staff to share what a typical day is like with a CPL dog. We hope that by reading these stories, you will gain a better understanding of the many ways CPL service and companion dogs help individuals with disabilities. Even more remarkable is how they can fit so seamlessly into the busiest schedule and become such an integral part of our daily life.

A Day in the Life of friend

By Janet Cooper, CPL volunteer (as told by Friend)

Friend is a young yellow lab from CPL’s small breeding program.

She is being raised by Carol Cully, a CPL Puppy Raiser. When Carol went on vacation recently, her work colleague Janet Cooper, a Temporary Puppy Raiser, took care of Friend.

My regular puppy home family is vacationing in Hawaii for a few weeks so I get to stay with Aunt Janet and her dog, Max. Aunt Janet is a CPL volunteer who serves as a temporary puppy home helping out when CPL puppies need a temporary or transitional place to stay. It’s kind of like a mini-vacation for me too. Plus, since Aunt Janet works with my puppy parent at West Pharmaceutical, I get to see all my regular human pals when she takes me to work with her.

5:30 a.m. The alarm goes off, but I lie in my kennel quietly

while Aunt Janet watches the news in bed for 15 minutes. Then I get to go outside and “do my business.” I wake up a happy boy!

6:30 a.m. One of my favorite times of the day . . . Breakfast! I “wait” patiently until I’m told it’s ok to eat. I am pretty good at that.

7:00 a.m. Time to leave for work. I get dressed in my CPL vest and head out to the car.

7:30 a.m. My work day starts at West. I wait patiently for

Aunt Janet to get settled in so we can go down to the cafeteria and get some ICE!! Yeah – I love my ice! Then we go back to her desk and I settle in underneath for a nice nap.

Fall, 2013

9:30 a.m. Today

I go with Aunt Janet to help her give blood. I was a good boy and laid under her bed like I’m supposed to.

12:00 p.m. Time

to go to the gym here at West for Zumba class. The music is pretty loud, but I still manage to catch a few zzzzzz’s. When she’s done, I usually get to go for a quick walk around the West campus to stretch my legs and get some fresh air.

1:00 p.m.

Sometimes we get to stop at the cafeteria again so Aunt Janet

can grab a bite to eat and take it back to her desk. That means more ice for me!!

Woohoo!

2:00 p.m. I get to go to a lot of meetings and I just lie under the conference table and wait for her to finish.

Once in a while she has to wake me up because I am snoring too loud.

4:30 p.m. As

soon as I hear Aunt Janet undock her laptop, I know it’s time to go home. It was a long tough day – I am ready to go home now.

5:00 p.m.

We arrive home and I get to take my cape off and play in the yard with Aunt Janet’s dog, Max, before dinner time. My favorite thing to do is chase the tennis ball as fast as I can, bring it back and “give it” so she can throw it over and over again.

This is great fun!

6:30 p.m.

My second favorite time of the day . . . .

Dinner! After we eat, I usually chew on my bone for a while, then another round of play in the yard. This time a big German Shepard pup came over to play.

Max was happy about that because he’s 10 years old and glad to have someone take the pressure off to entertain me.

9:00 p.m.

Aunt Janet puts the dog beds on the floor in the living room and we settle in to watch one of her favorite shows before going to bed. I get lots of pets and belly rubs.

10:00 p.m.

Last time out to “do my business” then I run into my kennel for a treat before settling in for the night. It was a goooood day!

A Day in the Life of Debbie

Debbie is a year old yellow lab from CPL’s small breeding program who is being raised in a community puppy home by Cindi Chamberlain and Buck Bullen. The Chamberlains are long-time and devoted volunteers who have raised a number of dogs for CPL. Hi, my name is Debbie. This is me at 10 weeks of age.

I just turned 1 year old this month. I live in a house with 4 labs.

Two are my cousins from CPL (Turks, 3 months old and Lindsay 3 years old) and 2 are therapy dogs at Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital.

I want to tell you about how I spend my days. We get up and go out to do business, then we all eat together and we rest quietly while Buck and Cindi eat breakfast. Then it’s outside; we all love to play in the big, fenced yard with our balls and toys.

On Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, I spend time with Buck and Cindi doing pet therapy. I get brushed before we leave the house. I practice sitting quietly while being petted. I especially like it because people pet me a lot and they tell me I am a good girl.

The patients in the hospital love Pet Therapy day. They love having the dogs there to pet, to receive kisses, to help make their day brighter. They especially love the puppies. Some of the patients spend time in the kitchen making dog biscuits for us while at the same time working on their fine motor skills.

We also get to work with the therapists and the patients in speech therapy; the patients say our names, say what color we are and they brush us. We get to spend time around the wheelchairs and walkers and ride up and down the elevators.

In the patient rooms, hallways and lobby we get to meet many people including children. I especially like when I get to visit with children.

I get to go many places with Buck and Cindi. We go to the mall, the movies, to plays and dinner. Every time we go out we are learning about new situations and practicing obedience skills, such as sit, walk nice, down, and heel.

To make sure that I look my best, Sundays are grooming days. We practice being calm while our nails are being clipped and teeth are brushed, ears cleaned and coats are brushed. We all get the full treatment and then we get a nice treat.

After dinner we all get to lay together for group hugs. I love to cuddle, especially with my little cousin Turks, so this is the best part of the day for me.

Barkley

A Day in the Life of barkley

Holly, who lives in Michigan, was partnered with Barkley in 2011. Barkley, a very smart and personable black lab, was a successor dog for Holly . She chose to keep her original service dog Delsie, as a beloved family pet, as do most CPL graduates, once Delsie retired.

I hear a continuous beeping sound coming from my mom’s night stand. The bedroom is dark and I am quite comfortable on my toddler bed. It must be early because my big sister is sound asleep on her orthopedic bed. I hear my mom stirring from the bed and she gets situated in her wheel chair. She gives me a kiss on the forehead as she passes on her way to the bathroom. I know she will call me in a few minutes so I’ll listen until I’m summoned. I hear something drop on the floor, “Barkley!” I jump off my bed and retrieve her mascara today. It’s something different every day.

My big sister is awake so I know mom will let us outside soon. She tells me that Delsie can’t hold it like I can. After we do “our business”, my favorite part of the day happens–breakfast! I wait patiently for my food! After I eat and my mom puts on my harness for the day, I help her finish getting ready for work. She tells Delsie she loves her and I pull the door shut. I love the people my mom works with but I know I have a job to do. I wait patiently under the desk for my next command. Sometimes we play hide-n-seek with her co-workers during my playtime. My mom says its good for everyone to have a break in the work day.

After work we stop by a store to pick up some things she needs. Shopping isn’t my favorite thing to do and I try to lie down as soon as she stops. When we arrive home, I am anxious to cuddle with my mom. She brushes me and my teeth.

I always hear people tell my mom how handsome I am. It makes me feel good and my mom seems proud. This winter we have spent a lot of time relaxing with my older sister. It’s fun “working” for my mom. I make her laugh a lot. I’m kind of new at this but my mom hugs me all the time and tells me she couldn’t do life without me. So, I guess I’m kind of important. :) Time for bed. I love to sleep and I need to be prepared for what the day will bring tomorrow. It’s a good thing I’m laid back and can go with the flow.

I never know what my mom has planned. I hope I dream about my foster parent and CPL tonight, that always makes me happy.

CPL graduate Cindy was partnered with Monty in 2004. After exemplary service Monty retired in the summer of 2012 and Cindy kept him as a beloved member of the family, as many of our graduates do, while applying for a successor service dog.

A Day in the Life of MONTY

Hi my name is Monty, I’ve been a retired service dog now for 5 months and I’d like to share with you my typical day:

I still get up when my partner Cindy does but someday maybe I’ll sleep in, maybe tomorrow? Cindy and her husband, Steve, put in a doggie door so

By Cindy now I can go out without Cindy (As told by Monty) looking to see if I go or not.

Sometimes I see her in the window checking, but really you would think I’ve earned a little privacy!

It’s different now. Sometimes Cindy gives me my breakfast and sometimes Steve (my newfound buddy) does. I don’t have to rush to eat it though and I do like to savor it, especially now since on good days there may be a little people food-yum!

I like to curl up on the sofa and wait while Cindy and Steve rush around the house getting ready for work. Steve takes me outside to chase my favorite ball just before he goes off to his job. I do love to chase balls, tennis, rubber, small, big, any kind! When I come back inside, Cindy is drinking her coffee -- it smells like morning. I get my “vitamins” as she puts on her coat. She kisses me and pats me and tells me she’ll see me later and to be good.

Now is my time to snooze…I can stretch out on the sofa, roll over and change places, it’s a great

big soft sofa...I love it!

I heard something, didn’t I? Should I bark? I guess now it’s okay for me to bark now I am retired.? Woof! Oh good – its Liz coming to take me for a walk and if I hold the ball in my mouth maybe she’ll throw it for me a few times. If I look cute and hold the ball in my mouth that might get me another few throws! Yeah!

Wow, that was fun, yawn . . . time for another snooze . . .

I hear Cindy’s car! Woof, Woof, this is the best time of the day! She gets home and tells me all the people who asked about me . . . today it was at least five, I miss seeing the kids and adults she works with. Do you think they will come over? And maybe play ball?

Cindy says I can come in the car! We pulled up to the store that smells good, they give treats!

My favorite kind! Wow they even let me in the store. Cindy’s smiling and so are all the ladies. I can’t wait to get a treat, what if I show them I can still jump up on the counter? Yum! What’s everyone clapping for? I remember all my service skills!

I still help to recycle and pull the laundry basket..I can still do my service skills. I think they are fun and they please Cindy so-o much!

Awesome day!

A Day in the Life of CLIFFORD

Clifford and Tina have been partners since 2011. They do everything together and recently took a nine day cruise to Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Haiti and St. Johns. Tina took pictures of their trip and it is a great example of how service dogs can adapt to any situation.

Tina wrote this description of her canine partner Clifford: Clifford . . . the true definition of love and devotion. I think I have the most amazing Service Dog . . . but doesn’t everyone? From the very first day I was matched with Clifford and we started training, he would lie in front of me and just stare at me. It was as if he was trying to tell me that I’m his person and he promises to love and help me, make my life easier and happier, and be at my side every minute of the day. He has done just that.

He has a gentle loving nature about him. He can melt your heart just by looking in his eyes. He has little wrinkles in his eyebrows that we affectionately call worry wrinkles. Clifford loves everyone and “knows everyone just has to love him”!

His passion at playtime is his whiffle ball and bat. He loves to play baseball but is just as happy to snuggle up with you and be next to you, touching you. Even when it’s playtime, he will stop what he’s doing and come back to check on me to make sure I’m alright.

Clifford has his serious side though, when he’s in full working mode. Nothing seems to upset or scare him. He’s always willing to try anything I ask of him.

He’s very dedicated to me. There are times I believe he knows me better than I know myself. At times when we are walking, if he sees a bench he will head over to it as if to say you need to sit and rest a little before we continue. On days I need to stay in bed all day, he doesn’t complain or get fidgety. He just lays next to me, comforting me. But his ability doesn’t stop at helping me physically. His tender, affectionate personality lifts my spirits when I’m feeling down.

Thank you Clifford, or Honeybear as I affectionately call him, for making my life with you an amazing journey! I’ve come to depend on you. I can’t and don’t want to imagine my life without you.

A Day in the Life of mel

Mel was released from the CPL service dog program due to weakened hips which made him ineligible to be a service dog. He was adopted by Joe Savarese who takes him everywhere, dresses him up and then sends the photos to CPL staff members. Mel is lucky, in that Joe works for a company that allows pets in the workplace. We love getting these delightful images and look forward to each big holiday in hopes that another photo of Mel will soon be on its way.

The sun is just starting to brighten the sky, the birds are starting to sing, and Mel is waiting for breakfast. He stands and stares from the kitchen as I stumble down the stairs. At 105 pounds, he is hardly starving, but you would think he hasn’t eaten in a week. He knows from his CPL training he must not jump on me so instead he bumps up and down on his front paws in a ‘happy dance’.

“Lie down”, I say, and he crunches to floor and goes as flat as a pancake with his head on the floor.

He waits patiently while I fill his bowl then he devours the bowl’s contents on command.

“ When people ask about Mel, we get a chance to talk about his CPL beginnings. I carry brochures and Mel has learned to carry a brochure to the people we meet.”

When finished, he starts his vigil. He watches my every

move intently. “Can I help? Can I help? Huh?, Huh?”, he might as well say. He walks with me as I vacuum up the dog hairs from the night before, he sits by my feet while I eat my breakfast, then he tracks me while I make preparations to leave for work. Finally, I say, “get dressed”, and he puts his nose through the loop of his GentleLeader™ and we are on our way.

As soon as I open the door and say, “Let’s go to work”, he runs out to the car and waits by the car door. I open the door, say” Hop up!” In he goes and we’re on our way.

Some days we stay at the office where he spends most of his day sprawled out in various spots sleeping. His favorite spot is on the couch basking in the morning sun. I have a baby gate in the door to keep him from wandering off to socialize. When my building neighbors pass by my office door they often stop to say hello. Mel jumps up, puts a toy in his mouth and runs to the door to greet and be greeted. If it is someone new, I tell Mel to give out a CPL brochure. I say, “Mel, earn your keep!”

Sometimes he needs a little help with this job. He might hand out his skunk toy or my outgoing mail by mistake.

I work as a manufacturer’s representative for construction equipment. Most days we are in the office but some days we visit job sites and customers. Mel goes just about everywhere with me. Some days we have to travel out into the field to meet customers on the job, survey steel, or supervise operations. Mel gets to travel in my pick-up truck. It’s a club cab so he has his own back seat with a small rear window to stick his nose out of. He has been known to kiss an unexpecting customer on the face when they stick their head through the passenger window to say hello.

He always enjoys going on a sniffing expedition at each new place we visit. Sometimes he gets to meet dog friends that also go to work each day with their dads who are my customers.

They get to play tag in the weeds, run through the mud puddles and sometimes jump in the bay or a stream. I think we have to teach Mel a new trick: “Mel, clean up the back seat!”

He has become the company mascot. People can’t help but love him and he loves them back.

When the people we meet ask about Mel, we get a chance to talk about his CPL beginnings.

I carry brochures and Mel has learned to carry a brochure to the people we meet. He thinks this is his way of helping his CPL friends. He also gets featured on our company blog page. eight hundred people a month log in and see Mel dressed up giving holiday wishes and putting in a plug for his CPL family.

At the end of the day, we return home again.

The eating ritual is repeated and Mel gets to just relax and be a family pet knowing he’s done something positive with his day.

SCI - CAMBRIDGE SPRINGS THROWS A ‘FIRST BIRTHDAY PAWDY’ FOR CPL PUPPIES FREDDY AND WISDOM By the Cambridge Springs SCI Prison Puppy Raisers

On Friday, March 8, one year old labs Freddy and Wisdom got a very special surprise – Freddy’s inmate volunteer handlers threw a birthday ‘pawdy’ for both of them. All the puppies at Cambridge Springs were notified by Wisdom’s handler who made the necessary invitations to send out to the other pups and their handlers. Everyone was invited on Friday night for half an hour over to Freddy’s house.

As one of the planners/participants tells it, “We had a birthday banner made, pawdy hats and pawdy collars. The banner was hung above the door, with hats and streamers along

the side. There were plenty of the pups’ favorite toys to play with, including a piñata, that was the talk of the entire compound.

“Freddy, the birthday boy, broke the piñata and a bunch of balls and dog toys came falling out. There were bones and toys all over the place.” The youngest dog, baby Tana, was the first one to grab a toy and run under a bed. She was so cute! We made a giant tunnel out of cardboard, and the dogs enjoyed playing with it, running in and out and chasing each other. All of us dog handlers stood by and watched the pups have fun. It was great!

Each of the pups even had a kibble cupcake.”

Great care was taken to make sure none of the pups played too aggressively with any of the younger ones, especially with all the bones, toys and food. All the dogs played very nicely, even letting baby Tana chew on the bones with them. When it was over, all the puppies took home ‘pawdy’ favors and treats provided for by Freddy’s handlers – it was a terrific celebration and a memorable birthday!

Home Companion Team Graduates – Summer 2013 Home companion dogs are placed with individuals who CPL believes would benefit from a well trained companion to bring comfort, encouragement, and joy — but who would have difficulty raising and training a dog on their own. Although not usually providing physical assistance, the job of a home companion dog is extremely special. By providing a kiss, an adoring look, a wag of the tail, they can make lonely moments seem full, painful moments seem bearable, and uncertain times seem hopeful. They take their jobs seriously, knowing that they make a difference in the lives of their human partners that cannot be measured.

When Marge came for her interview she told us she loved dogs and found that petting a dog was a calming influence. Since being partnered with Julie, Marge has experienced far fewer panic attacks. Julie has definitely had a powerful calming influence.

Kate applied to CPL for a successor home companion after her first home companion passed away.

We matched her with Leslie, a cute little black lab.

They both love the water and the beach and we understand that Leslie now has her own beach towel for sun bathing. She and Kate sprawl out on the deck together. These two have quickly become fast friends and great companions.

From the very beginning, it is easy to see that Zach has a great sense of humor, and a smile and twinkle in his eye that is non-stop. Star II was selected to be Zach’s home companion dog. She is bright, loves going for walks and has a similar twinkle in her eye! The other night there was a thunderstorm and usually when a storm starts Zach seeks out his parents. This time, he stayed in his room and his parents found Zach sitting with his arms around Star – his protector. This is a wonderful experience for Zach as he matures into an independent young man.

When Anna’s first CPL home companion dog Baylee passed away, it took time for Anna to heal and be ready for another partner. There was “no special friend” to be with her for companionship and the house was too quiet. L. G., a sweet and loving dog, was placed with Anna. In Anna’s interview she told us that a dog with a few skills such as retrieval would be helpful. L. G. has these skills and loves to use them. Anna also wanted a dog that enjoys car rides and L. G. loves to travel.

Gracie

Jobin, a large gentle lab was selected to be Jack’s canine partner. They are enjoying each other’s company and especially love playing ball together in the back yard. We understand that Jack has become quite the “pitcher” now that he has a wonderful teammate to play with. Jobin is very responsive to Jack’s commands and listens to him.

Carin and her parents came to CPL looking for a dog that would be Carin’s best friend and give her companionship. Her social world is small and her instinct to care for others is strong. She loves to care for animals and people. Raker was selected for Carin. He loves being cared for and being with someone all the time. Carin’s mom tells us that Raker idolizes Carin. They are a very bonded team.

Carin is enjoying caring for and playing with her new friend and Raker is loving every minute of it.

Fall, 2013

Full Service Team Graduates – Summer 2013 The dogs graduating with this class came to us as pups. Some came from our breeding program others were donated by local breeders and shelters. They were raised by CPL volunteer puppy homes (some in our community puppy raising program and some in our prison puppy raising program) for one year. The puppies learned their basics, were socialized, nurtured and loved. When they were one year old, they moved into the CPL kennel and began more intensive, service dog training. They formed new attachments to their trainers and CPL staff , and worked hard learning new skills.

The human partners in this class of 2013 also worked hard. They have overcome adversity in their lives – adversity which has taken many different forms. As they have struggled to overcome, they have searched for answers – a way to reach their dreams – and they have made the choice to make a service dog a part of the answer. They have completed applications, undergone interviews, and have shared their lives with CPL so that we could select the best canine partners for them.

When Rivendell, Alison’s second CPL service dog, was no longer able to keep up with Alison’s changing and increasing needs we began to look for a successor dog for her. She bonded quickly with Wynn. For his part, he decided this was to be his mom and literally planted himself on her to keep her in line. He began alerting to blood sugar changes and severe vertigo early – and learned quickly that it’s tough to get Alison to stop and stay – he was often found literally laying that entire great big body on her lap as she sat on the sidewalk or in the recliner. We know that these two are going to go out, take on new challenges and share CPL and their new found independence with the world.

Linton

This will be the only team to travel on a plane to get home and, hailing from Texas, they win the “furthest team from CPL” award for this class. Kortney was determined to be the best partner that CorKey could have. She learned how to click/treat to support and encourage CorKey’s service skills and good behavior. CorKey’s alerts will keep Kortney safe and will enable her to take on life’s challenges and transform her dreams into reality.

Balick

When you’re as tall as Wayne and you want a dog to help you off the floor and to help you walk a bit, then you’d better have a big dog to do the job and Jobie is definitely dog enough to take on that challenge. Wayne has a habit of looking very serious when he’s learning something new but he was smiling up a storm when he and Jobie won 2nd place in musical rugs – and was laughing away when he described to the teams how wet HE got during his first time giving Jobie a bath. These two have already formed a wonderful partnership.

Cindy returned to CPL for a successor dog when her longtime CPL service dog Monty let her know it was time for him to retire. Cindy’s life had truly been transformed by Monty and she had known a freedom and level of safety with him by her side that she needed to live her life and advance in her career. She knew without question she wanted another service dog.

She was thrilled to be partnered with Sugar, a large and very sturdy dog. Cindy is an innately talented dog trainer. She knows when she needs to be firm and when it is time to be playful. With Sugar, she has a dog who loves to work and Sugar has a mom who is super creative and will put those skills to use in a million ways. Life is going to be a wonderful adventure for these two.

The CPL trainers’ notes about Krystal are like a mantra, mentioning over and over again, how she is great at using praise to motivate and encourage her dog, Teddie. The entire class learned by watching Krystal as she and Teddie developed their special partnership. Whenever you glanced at them they looked like they were having fun. They ended the obstacle course with Teddie giving Krystal a high five and it seemed as though every task ended that way – the two of them conquering the next task and celebrating at the end. As we tell our teams – your thoughts and emotions go straight down the leash to your dog – in this case Krystal’s positive outlook, undying optimism and excitement kept her dog working and trying like a champ.

April, from West Virginia, kept everyone laughing with her great sense of humor. Her new partner Dale has a sense of humor too. They bonded strongly – April has good training instincts and she thanks Dale for helping her every time she walks somewhere. And they are walking more – more than April remembers doing in a very long time.

Dale looks so proud to be helping his new mom – he absolutely walks with a swagger and his tail is always wagging. April is a musician and plans to have Dale by her side when she’s playing in the symphony. This is a strong team who heads home to an exciting and activity filled life

Brianna and Sheila Puppy Donor - Cecil County SPCA / Eastern Shore Animal Rescue Puppy Namer - Martha Spindler Formal Training Home - Carol and Ken Stark Brianna was partnered with the only non-lab in the group, Sheila. As they worked those first few days to build a strong bond, Brianna enjoyed grooming Sheila and making sure she looked her best. For her part, Sheila adores her new partner. She’s glued to Brianna’s side – which is great when it comes to seizure alert work. Sheila started alerting from the very first day of team training. And even though Brianna was frustrated at having to stay on the sidelines at times, she quickly grew to trust Sheila and to listen to what she was telling her when she alerted. A partnership and a friendship formed and Brianna quickly began to feel a bit safer on her own and to relish her newfound independence.

Noelia came to team training looking a bit nervous, but what started out as tentative and cautious soon blossomed into confident and happy. During the first few days when Tilly would alert to Noelia’s seizures she would say something like “but I feel fine” – and try to ignore the alert. Pretty quickly she realized that her dog was right on the money and wasn’t about to let her ignore the upcoming seizure. Within days Noelia was listening to her dog’s alerts like a pro and they quickly began tackling their other service skills. Noelia is quick to praise and motivates her dog to continue trying. If ever she would get frustrated she would burst into super rapid Spanish. At Tilly’s confused look she’d breathe deep and return to the known commands in a calm and patient voice. Noelia says she’s happier now than she ever has been in her life – her husband says he is thrilled to see this change – she’s even set a new goal to work full time again.

Sage

All CPL teams are amazing in their quest for independence, but every now and then a team comes along that is so inspirational that you just have to say WOW! Jennifer and her service dog Smidget were the epitome of grit and determination during team training. In the first week she tripped on a piece of carpet in the shoe store and used her harness to catch herself and prevent a fall – she walked the entire strip shopping center that day - she could see where this was going if she just stuck with it. She never gave up, no matter how many times she fell. She was always smiling.

Even when the foul ball at the baseball game hit her full force in the chest requiring the EMT’s help – she just laughed (it had to hurt) and had all of her classmates sign the ball the next day in class.

These two are going to amaze their friends, family, and co-workers and students as they head home to North Carolina to tutoring, teaching dance lessons, receptionist duties and a life full of new and exciting adventures.

Toni was no rookie when she came to CPL. In fact she knew us well having been the support person for CPL graduates Sharon and CW throughout their team training and beyond. She knew the staff, she knew the facility, she knew many of the volunteers – and even many of the lectures. Her new partner, Bud, fell in love with his mom early on – and he successfully convinced her that a Labrador IS a lapdog – and so most days you’d see him with his entire upper body draped across Toni’s lap – looking happy as a clam. They cruised through training well – facing challenges without panic – working on remembering the correct commands and the sequences of those commands which was probably the hardest thing. The trainers noted frequently how proud Toni always seemed when she and Bud completed their skills – they really loved taking on that obstacle course and Toni was positively glowing with pride by the end!

diabetes ALERT DOG PILOT PROGRAM • Applicants and their family members must not have allergies to dogs or other limitations on the breed that can be placed with them.

• Applicants should be looking for blood sugar alert as the primary service skill.

• Applicants must be willing and able to participate regularly in the training sessions to be held in • Applicants should have a diagnosis of Type 1 Cochranville, PA during business hours.

The Royal Treatment: A Princess in the Courthouse In addition to training and providing service and home companion dogs, CPL also places residential and courthouse companion dogs. A good example of one of our courthouse companion dogs is Princess, who provides comfort and support to crime victims going through the legal process in Centre County, PA.
