NYKYTAIDE kohtaa MENNEEN

yväskylä on jo 14. kerran kansainvälisen ajankohtaisen taidegrafiikan näyttämönä. Graphica Creativa 2016 – a PRESENT to the PAST -näyttelyyn on kutsuttu 13 nykytaiteilijaa, joiden teoksilla on jokin yhteys taiteen historiaan,

yksittäisiin taiteilijoihin tai heidän teoksiinsa. Näyttelyyn osallistuu taiteilijoita Ranskasta, Yhdysvalloista, Belgiasta, Ruotsista, Puolasta ja Suomesta. Graphica Creativa -näyttelyn yksi keskeisistä teemoista on tuoda esille piirtäjän käden jälkeä, mikä perinteisesti on näkynyt taidegrafiikassa taiteilijalle ominaisena graafisena viivana. Näyttelyssä viiva näkyy myös taiteilijoiden piirustuksissa, kuvakudoksissa, maalauksissa ja jopa kolmiulotteisissa teoksissa. Näin Graphica Creativa jatkaa nimensä mukaan triennaalin pitkäaikaista periaatetta esitellä taidegrafiikan mielenkiintoisia, luovia reuna-alueita. Nykytaiteilijoiden teosten lisäksi näyttelyssä nähdään muutamia vanhojen mestareiden, kuten Albrecht Dürerin (1471–1528), Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijnin (1606–1669), Giovanni B. Piranesin (1720–1778) ja Francisco de Goyan (1746– 1828) grafiikan vedoksia, jotka on lainattu Kansallisgallerian kokoelmista. Näyttelyn teemaa kommentoivat myös Marjatta Hanhijoen (s. 1948), Pentti Lumikankaan (1926–2005), Tapani Mikkosen (1952–2014), Matti Waskilammen (1940–2013) ja Alain Jacquet’n (1939–2008) teokset 1960–1990-luvuilta. Taide heijastaa itseään katsomalla menneisyyteen ja tulkitsemalla uudelleen taidehistoriaa, mutta käyttäen nykytaiteen vapauksia. Taidehistorian professori Ville Lukkarinen pohtii artikkelissaan menneisyyttään uudelleen tulkitsevan taiteen merkityksiä ja itsereflektiivisyyttä. Hänen mukaansa kuvan merkitykset eivät säily toistettaessa samansisältöisenä vaan ne saavat uusia merkityksiä taiteen luovassa uusiokäytössä ja juuri siinä piilee lainausten ja sitaattien lumo. Samalla syntyy monitahoinen ”kuvan kielioppi”. Kuvataiteilija Kuutti Lavonen puolestaan pohtii poleemisessa artikkelissaan taiteen ydintä ja olemusta teknistyvässä nykymaailmassa sekä kysyy, minkälaista taidetta oma aikamme tarvitsee? Haluamme kiittää Suomen opetus- ja kulttuuriministeriötä merkittävästä taloudellisesta tuesta ja niitä lukuisia henkilöitä, jotka ovat avustaneet työryhmäämme näyttelyn järjestämisessä. CONTEMPORARY ART meets THE PAST

or the 14th time, Jyväskylä is the stage for contemporary international printmaking. Graphica Creativa 2016 – a PRESENT to the PAST presents the work of 13 contemporary artists whose work has a correlation with art history, specific master artists or their

work. The artists in this exhibition are from France, the United States, Belgium, Sweden, Poland and Finland. One of the central purposes of the Graphica Creativa exhibition is to bring attention to the artists’ line quality which is traditionally associated with printmaking. In this exhibition that line is also visible in the artists’ drawings, tapestries, paintings and even three dimensional work. In this way, Graphica Creativa continues its namesake as a longstanding triennial as once again we present compelling printmaking from the creative fringe. In addition to the work by these contemporary artists, the exhibition also displays the work of several old masters such as Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528), Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606–1669), Giovanni B. Piranesi (1720–1778) and Francisco de Goya (1746–1828) in the form of prints on loan from the Finnish National Gallery collection. The theme of this exhibition is also touched on by Marjatta Hanhijoki (s. 1948), Tapani Mikkonen (1952– 2014), Pentti Lumikangas (1926–2005), Matti Waskilampi (1940–2013) and Alain Jacquet (1939–2008) with pieces made from the 1960’s until into the 1990’s. Art reflects itself by looking into the past and reinterpreting Art History using the new freedoms of contemporary art. In his paper, Professor of Art History Ville Lukkarinen considers the meaning and self-reflective aspects of the reinterpretations of art. According to Lukkarinen, an image’s meaning is not necessarily preserved by copying the content. New meanings emerge in the creativity of the recycled art and this exactly is where the spell of citation and quotation lie. At the same time a multifaceted ”image vocabulary ” is created. Visual artist Kuutti Lavonen ponders the core or art and the contemporary technicality of our world in his polemic article, and asks, what kind of art do we need today? We would like to thank the Finnish Ministry of Culture and Education who has played a significant role in financially supporting this exhibition. Ville Lukkarinen HISTORIAN siipien havinaa

orbjörn Dammin (s. 1961) grafiikanlehti Arabian yöt on omaperäinen kollaasimainen teos, jossa yhdistyvät Giovanni Battista Piranesin rauniovedokset 1700-luvulta, Francisco Goyan etsaukset 1800-luvun alun sodan kauhuista sekä moderni sotakalustokuvasto. Näin syntyy dystooppinen näkymä sivilisaatioiden tuhon jatkumoon. Ernest Pignon-Ernestin (s. 1942) videoteoksena välittyvät fragmentaariset muunnokset Caravaggion uskonnollisesta taiteesta 1500–1600 -lukujen vaihteesta elävöittävät Napolin jo sinällään historiallisesti kerroksellista kaupunkitilaa. Vuoden 2016 Graphica Creativan teemana on nykygrafiikan kiehtova suhde taiteen historiaan. Grafiikkaan kuuluu elimellisesti ajatus toistettavuudesta, saman teoksen useista kopioista. Menneinä vuosisatoina grafiikalla oli myös keskeinen rooli siinä, että kuvataiteen uniikit alkuperäisteokset monistuivat ja levisivät laajemman yleisön ulottuville jäljennösgrafiikkana – ennen kuin valokuvareproduktiot tulivat korvaamaan tämän käytännön. Grafiikan omin luonne voi johtaa lähes väistämättä ja ikään kuin loogisesti ajatukseen olemassa olevan kuvallisen materiaalin uusiokäytöstä graafikon omassa tuotannossa. Visuaalisessa taiteessa on pitkään ollut nähtävissä kiehtova – vaikkakaan ei tällä hetkellä mitenkään valtavirtaa edustava – suuntaus, jossa nykyisyys ja menneisyys ikään kuin asetetaan vuoropuheluun toistensa kanssa. Se avaa näkymiä menneeseen tavalla, joka tekee meidät tietoisiksi asemastamme menneisyyden ja tulevaisuuden jatkumolla kätkemällä helmaansa useita sisäkkäisiä ajallisia kerrostumia tai koostumalla kadonneiden maailmojen relikteistä. Tämänlaatuisia muistumien ketjuja saadaan yleensä aikaan viittaamalla ja assosioimalla varhempiin taideteoksiin tai kokonaisiin ohitettuihin taidesuuntauksiin. Taidehistoriallisten lainausten, viittausten, parodioiden ja pastissien käyttö yhdistyy ehkä ensimmäiseksi 1980-luvun taiteeseen ja näin ollen niin sanotun postmodernismin huippuvuosiin, mutta ilmiö on toki edelleen elävä. Traditionaalisen taulumaalauksen 1980-luvulla uudelleen esiinpuhjennut suosio palautti repertuaariin esittävän kuva-aiheiston, mutta samalla se palautti myös innostuksen perinteisten akateemisten kuva-aiheiden uudelleenkierrätykseen. Postmodernismin dekonstruktiivinen, ilmiöitä purkamaan pyrkivä henki ilmenee kuvataiteessa usein historiallisen kuvaston kriittisenä, usein jopa parodisena, lainaamisena.

Tietoista ja näkyvää viittaamista vanhempaan taidehistoriaan esiintyi kuitenkin myös 1980-lukua edeltävässä niin sanotussa modernistisessa taiteessa, vaikka asia helposti unohdetaankin. Esimerkiksi modernin taiteen varhaisen uranuurtajan, Édouard Manet’n, keskeiset teokset perustuivat suoriin taidehistoriallisiin sitaatteihin, sovelluksiin sekä vaivihkaisempiin viittauksiin. 1800-luvun eturivin ranskalaistaiteilijat kokeilivat tällaisia kuvallisia strategioita, jotka modernistinen historiankirjoitus halusi myöhemmin unohtaa abstraktin modernismin voittokulkua suoraviivaisesti kuvaavasta tarinastaan. Esimerkiksi Pablo Picassolla oli tiivis suhde Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres’n taiteeseen. Ingres puolestaan oli itse hyödyntänyt taiteen historian merkkiteoksia omassa tuotannossaan lukemattomin eri tavoin. Myös Picasson nimeen liittyvä perusmodernistinen lajityyppi, kollaasi, on lainaava ja siteeraava taiteenlaji par excellence. Ei ehkä voida puhua varsinaisesta jatkumosta taiteen historiaa lainaavasta Ingres’tä Manet’n ja Picasson kautta edellä mainittuihin Dammiin ja Pignon-Ernestiin (Todettakoon, että myös Pignon-Ernest viittaa suoraan Ingres’n taideteoksiin sarjassaan Situation Ingresque vuodelta 2007). On kuitenkin niin, että taiteen historian kuvastoa hyödyntävä ”postmoderni asenne” on mahdollisuutena, potentiaalina, olemassa jo modernistisessa traditiossa. Tärkeintä on kuitenkin tiedostaa, että vanhemman taiteen hyväksikäyttö tai epäsuoremmat viittaukset siihen merkitsevät aina eri asioita, kun ne tulevat esiin taidemaailman muuttuvissa konteksteissa. Joskus tärkeintä näyttäisi olevan vain tuo ”lainaava ele” sinällään, joskus puolestaan tärkeintä on lainatun elementin oma, sillä jo vanhastaan ollut ikonografinen merkitys. Syntyvä merkityskenttä voi vaihdella suurestikin. Vanhemman taiteen lainaaminen ja siihen viittaaminen voi kärjistetyimmillään olla kepeän parodista, mutta esimerkiksi Manet’n tapauksessa tästä parodisuudesta ei hänen omana aikanaan ollut minkäänlaista merkkiä. Nyttemmin kuitenkin – omassa taidekontekstissamme – näemme mielellämme esimerkiksi Manet’n maalauksen Aamiainen ruohikolla (1862–1863) postmodernin ironisessa valossa, niin kuin nykytaiteilijoiden siitä tekemät lukuisat muunnelmat ja pastissit osoittavat. Postmodernistisessa taiteessa viitattiin – ja viitataan edelleenkin – mieluusti italialaisten manieristi- ja barokkitaiteilijoiden teoksiin. Caravaggion tuotanto on ollut harvinaisen laajan siteerauksen kohteena. Se kiehtoi

myös Pignon-Ernestiä hänen alussa mainitussa Napoli-projektissaan (1988–1995). Sen sijaan valtavirtamodernistit puolestaan innostuivat sellaisista historiallisista taiteilijoista kuin Piero della Francesca, Nicolas Poussin, Jacques-Louis David ja Paul Cézanne. Ironia tai parodia ei tullut tällöin missään nimessä kyseeseen, vaan näiden mestareiden visuaalisia sommitteluratkaisuja arvostettiin kunnioittavassa hengessä. Näin heidät omittiin osaksi formalistisen modernismin historiaa sen kuvitteellisina esivaiheina. Tästä kirjaimellisimpia esimerkkejä ovat lukuisat 1900-luvun taiteen hommage à -nimiset maalaukset. 1900-luvun lopun ja 2000-luvun alun menneisyyttä uudelleentulkitseva taide on itse asiassa perin älyllistä ja analyyttistä. Näin se lähenee käsitetaidetta, mutta samalla se lähenee myös renessanssiperäisen taiteen oppinutta kirjallista symboliikkaa, jonka modernismi aikanaan tuomitsi painottaessaan kuvataiteen autonomista ja mykkää visuaalisuutta. Renessanssitaiteilija kuitenkin uskoi symboleidensa totuudellisuuteen aivan eri tavalla kuin nykypäivän traditionaalista kuvastoa käyttävä taiteilija. Nyttemmin olemme tulleet perin juuri tietoisiksi merkitysten jatkuvasta muuttumisesta eri lukutilanteissa ja yleensäkin kielellisten merkitysten epävakaudesta ja häilyvyydes-

tä. Juuri itse merkityksenmuodostumisen prosessi alkoi kiehtoa taiteilijoita muutama vuosikymmen sitten. Tämä on tehnyt taiteesta mitä suurimmassa määrin itseään tutkiskelevaa, itserefleksiivistä. Tällaisen taiteen tekeminen on siis itse asiassa kuin tutkimuksen tekemistä. On kiinnostavaa tutkia, miten merkitykset syntyvät ja kuolevat taiteen tradition luovassa uusiokäytössä. Toistettaessa kuvaa tai verbaalista lausetta, se ei säily koskaan täysin samansisältöisenä uudessa ympäristössään. Kun kuvia lainataan, yhdistellään, upotetaan toistensa sisään, leikataan ja liimataan, syntyy kerrostuneita merkityskenttiä, jotka useimmiten jäävät viestiltään monimielisiksi. Lainausten ja sitaattien lumo nousee juuri merkitysten jatkuvasta muuttumisesta ja häilyvyydestä. Teokset vaativat tulla ”luetuiksi”, mutta niiden hieroglyfikieli jää niin läpinäkymättömäksi, että käsitämme siitä vain fragmentaarisia osia kokonaisuuden jäädessä tulkinnanvaraiseksi. On myös kiinnostavaa pohtia, millainen historiakäsitys historiallista aineistoa käyttävän taiteen takana on? Kääntymällä historiaan postmodernismi hyökkäsi modernistisen taiteen historiatonta puhtaan visuaalisuuden palvontaa vastaan. Samanaikaisesti se kritisoi modernia optimistista edistysajattelua korostamalla pikemminkin

historian päämäärätöntä, sattumanvaraista luonnetta, sen absurdia olemusta, kiinnittämällä huomionsa sivilisaation haaksirikkoihin. Yleinen historiakulttuurin harrastus on myös kasvanut viime aikoina. Merkityksenmuodostuksen prosessien tiukan analyysin sijasta populaariin historiakulttuuriin kuuluva affektiivinen asenne on saanut aikaan sen, että erilaisilla taiteen ja populaarikulttuurin kentillä on pikemminkin pyritty kosketuksiin menneisyyden kanssa, pyritty tekemään sitä läsnä olevaksi. Tätä on toteutettu erilaisilla kulttuuriperintökohteilla, peleillä, historiallisilla romaaneilla, epookkielokuvilla, retrohenkisellä valokuvataiteella ja yleisellä muistelukulttuurilla. Tämä nykykulttuurin yleinen käänne historiaa ja muistia kohtaan on vaikuttanut myös taidekenttään. Hollantilainen kulttuurintutkija ja taidehistorioitsija Mieke Bal on sitä mieltä, että meitä kuitenkin loppujen lopuksi kiinnostaa eniten oma aikamme, ja me käännämme katseemme sellaiseen historialliseen aikakauteen, jonka kanssa koemme jollakin tavoin yhteyttä ”yhteisesti jaetun ajan” nimissä (Quoting Caravaggio. Contemporary Art, Preposterous History. Chicago & London: The University of Chicago Press, 1999). Viime vuosikymmeninä eurooppalainen barokki on ollut juuri tällainen taidekausi, ja Bal liittää nykytaiteen lukuisat viittaukset Caravaggion taiteeseen nimenomaan tähän ilmiöön. Balin mukaan tuo aikakausi oli vastaavanlainen itseään tutkisteleva, annettuja totuuksia kyseenalaistava kausi kuin omamme, ja näin sen taide toimii oivana alustana pohtia omaa problematiikkaamme.

Viime vuosikymmenien taiteen historiasuhteessa on itse asiassa havaittavissa useita keskenään ristiriitaisia suuntauksia. Monet itseään kriittisinä pitävät arvioitsijat tuomitsevat mielellään avoimen innostuksen menneisyyden ilmiöistä tai aikakausista poliittisesti konservatiiviseksi nostalgiaksi tai markkinaorientoituneeksi ja eklektiseksi historian hyödyntämiseksi. Tämän vastakohtana kriittinen historismi olisi positiivisen kumouksellinen, historian suuria kertomuksia problematisoiva suuntaus, johon yhdistyy erilaisten vastahistorioiden esiintuonti alistettujen ja vainottujen ryhmien kokemusten pohjalta. Tästä on kuvataiteessakin lukuisia esimerkkejä. Niissä parodisuus ja vakava poliittinen agenda kulkevat usein käsi kädessä. Nämä kaksi vastakohtaista tapaa kohdata historia – ja käyttää sitä taiteen materiaalina – eivät kuitenkaan ole ainoat mahdollisuudet. Eräät nostalgiaa analysoineet kulttuurintutkijat – esimerkiksi Susan Stewart ja Svetlana Boym – puhuvat affektiivisen ja menneisyyttä elävöittämään pyrkivän historiasuhteen positiivisuudesta, eivätkä pidä sitä välttämättä mitenkään eskapistisena tai poliittisesti kyseenalaisena (Susan Stewart, On Longing. Durham & London: Duke University Press, 1993; Svetlana Boym, The Future of Nostalgia. New York: Basic Books, 2001). Ihminen voi toki yhtä aikaa rakentaa voimakkaan kokemuksellisen siteen johonkin historialliseen aikakauteen tai ilmiöön ja olla samalla ironisen tietoinen sen perimmäisestä saavuttamattomuudesta. Tällainen voimakkaasti koettu affektiivinen side voi jopa johtaa historian erilaiseen ja syvempään ymmärtämiseen.

Ville Lukkarinen THE WHIZZING OF THE WINGS OF HISTORY

he graphic sheet Arabian Nights by Torbjörn Damm (1961-) is a personal collage type work, which combines Giovanni Battista Piranesi´s prints of ruins from the 18th century, Francisco Goya’s etchings of the horrors of the wars of the beginning of the 19th century, and a catalogue of modern war equipment. In this way, a dystopic view of the continuous destruction of civilizations is born. The fragmentary variations of Caravaggio’s religious art from the late 16th and the early 17th centuries, brought to the viewer in the form of a video work by Ernest Pignon-Ernest (1942-), vitalize the city space of Naples, which already in itself is historically stratified. The theme of Graphica Creativa 2016 is the fascinating relationship between contemporary graphics and the history of art. An organic part of graphics is the idea of repetition, of making many copies of the same work. In past centuries, graphics also had a central role in the multiplication of unique original art works and the spreading of them to a wider audience in the form of reproduction graphics –until photographic reproductions finally replaced this procedure. The innermost nature of graphics can, in the production of the graphic artist, lead almost inevitably, so to say logically, to the idea of the recycling of already existing pictorial material. In visual arts, there has long been a fascinating tendency– although at the moment not really representing the mainstream – where the contemporary and the past are so to speak in dialogue with each other. It opens windows on the past, in a way that makes us conscious of our position in the continuum between the past and the future, concealing within itself several layers of time embedded within each other, or consisting of relics of lost worlds. We usually follow this kind of chain of reminiscences by referring and associating to earlier art works, or to entire art movements that are now passé. Art historical quotations, references, parody and pastiche bring to mind first and foremost the art of the 1980s, that is, the years of the culmination of postmodernism, but the phenomenon is still alive and kicking. The new sudden popularity of the painting of traditional pictures in the 1980s brought back the figurative pictorial material to the artist’s repertoire, but at the same time it also revivified the

inspiration for recycling traditional academical pictorial motifs. The spirit of deconstructive postmodernism, in visual arts often appears as a critical, even parodical, borrowing from the historical catalogue. Conscious and visible references to older art history already appeared, however, in the so-called modernist art of the era that preceded the 1980s, even though people tend to forget this. For example the central works of one of the earliest pioneers of modern art, Édouard Manet, were based on direct quotes from art history, adaptations of it, and more indirect references to it. The French avant-garde artists of the 19th century experimented with this kind of pictorial strategies, which modernist history writing later wanted to leave out of the rectilinear success story it ascribed to abstract modernism. For example Pablo Picasso displayed a close affinity to the art of Jean-AugusteDominique Ingres. As for Ingres himself, he had in his own production in uncountable ways used the emblematic works of art history. Even the genre of standard modernism especially associated with Picasso’s name, the collage, is the borrowing and quoting genre par excellence. It might not be possible to talk about an actual continuum starting with Ingres borrowing from art history, through Manet and Picasso to the above mentioned Damm and Pignon-Ernest (N.B. Pignon-Ernest also refers directly to the art works of Ingres in his series Situation Ingresque from 2007). It’s a fact, however, that a “postmodern position” that uses the catalogue of art history already exists as a possibility, as a potential, in the modernist tradition. What’s important is, however, to make clear that whenever the phenomena of using older art or referring indirectly to it appear in the changing contexts of the art world, they always mean different things. Sometimes the most important thing seems to be that mere “quoting gesture”, while sometimes, on the other hand, it’s the iconographic signification the quoted element has in itself, and has had since ancient times. The field of signification that appears can change immensely. Borrowing from older art and referring to it can, in the most radical cases, constitute something lightly parodical, but for example in Manet’s case, in his era no signs existed for this kind of parody. Nowadays, however – in our own art context – we tend to see for example Manet’s painting The Luncheon on the Grass (1862–1863) in a postmodern, ironical light, the

way this is implicated in the numerous transformations and pastiches of the painting that have been created by contemporary artists. Postmodern art used to have a predilection for referring to the works of the Italian Mannerist and Baroque artists, and still does. Caravaggio’s production has been the object of an unusually wide range of quotes. It fascinated also Pignon-Ernest in his project Naples (1988–1995), which we mentioned in the first part of our text. On the other hand, the mainstream modernists on their part were inspired by historical artists such as Piero della Francesca, Nicolas Poussin, Jacques-Louis David and Paul Cézanne. In this context there was never any question of irony or parody, but the visual compositional solutions of these masters were appreciated and treated with an aura of respect. In this way they were accepted as part of the history of formalist modernism, as its imaginary pre-stages. Among the most evident examples of this are the numerous paintings called hommage à in the art of the 20th century. The art of the late 20th and early 21st centuries that reinterprets the past, is in fact quite intellectual and analytical. In this way, it approaches conceptual art, but at the same time, it also approaches the learned literary symbolism stemming from Renaissance art, a perspective once condemned by modernism stressing the autonomous and mute visuality of art. The Renaissance artist, however, believed in the reality of symbols in quite a different way from that of the contemporary artist using a traditional catalogue today. In more recent times, we have grown quite conscious of the continuous changes in signification occurring in different reading situations, and more generally, of the instability and oscillations of linguistic signification. It was exactly this process of creating signification that started to fascinate artists a few decades ago. This has turned art into something to a great extent self-analysing and self-reflecting. Making this kind of art is in fact like doing research. It’s interesting to study how significations are born and die in the creative re-use of the art tradition. When you repeat a picture or a linguistic phrase, the content is never the same in the new environment. When you borrow and combine pictures, let them sink into each other, cut and glue them, stratified fields of signification are born, that usually remain ambiguous as to their messages. The radiance of the borrowed elements and quotations results exactly from the continuous transformations and oscillations of the significations. The works demand to be “read”, but their hieroglyphic language remains so untransparent that we only perceive fragments of it, while the whole picture remains subject to interpretation. It’s also interesting to ponder the question: What idea of history lies behind the kind of art that uses a historical

material? By turning to history, postmodernism attacked the way historyless modernist art worshipped pure visuality. At the same time, it criticized the modern optimistic idea of progress, by stressing the nature of history as something haphazard lacking a finality, its absurdity, drawing our attention to the catastrophes of civilization. The general interest in historical culture has also grown lately. Instead of a strict analysis of the processes of forming signification, the affective position inherent in popular culture has had as its result that in the different fields of art and popular culture there have been aspirations rather to come to touch with the past, to make it come alive here and now. This has been achieved with all kinds of cultural heritage destinations, games, historical novels, epochal films, retrominded photo art and reminiscence culture in general. This general turn towards history and memory has also influenced the art field. The Dutch cultural researcher and art historian Mieke Bal is of the opinion that, however, in the final analysis what we are most interested in is our own time, and that we tend to turn our gaze to the kind of historical epoch that we somehow identify ourselves with in the name of “shared time” (Quoting Caravaggio. Contemporary Art, Preposterous History. Chicago & London: The University of Chicago Press, 1999). During the last few decades, the European Baroque has been precisely this kind of art epoch, and Bal ascribes the numerous references made in contemporary art to that of Caravaggio to this very phenomenon. According to Bal, the era in question was analogous to ours, in the same way self-analysing and critical of given truths, and in this way its art serves as the perfect base for pondering on our own problematic. In the relationship of the art of the last few decades to history, you can actually perceive several contradictory tendencies. Many people who consider themselves critically minded eagerly judge the open fascination with past phenomena or epochs as politically conservative nostalgia, or as a market-oriented and eclectic way of using history. As a counterweight, critical historicism is said to be subversive in a positive way, an orientation that problematizes the great narratives of history, as well as displaying the different counterhistories stemming from the experiences of repressed and persecuted groups. In art there are also numerous examples of this, in which parody often walks hand in hand with a serious political agenda. However, these two opposite ways of facing history – and using it as material for art – are not the only possibilities. Some cultural researchers who have analysed nostalgia – for example Susan Stewart and Svetlana Boym – talk about the positive sides of an affective relationship to history that strives to revivify the past, and don’t necessarily consider it as in any way escapist or politically questionable (Susan

Stewart, On Longing. Durham & London: Duke University Press, 1993; Svetlana Boym, The Future of Nostalgia. New York: Basic Books, 2001.) It‘s of course possible for a person to build up a strong experiential bond to some

historical era or phenomenon, and at the same time to be ironically conscious about its essential unattainability. This kind of strongly experienced affective bond can even lead to a new and deeper understanding of history.

Olipa ajalla alku tai vain kesto, taide ja kulttuuri välittävät elämän ja ihmisyyden tärkeimpiä arvoja. Tekniikan ja viestintäteknologian ajan maailmamme on rajoitettu kahdella tavalla, kulutusja kilpailuyhteiskunnaksi. Merkittäydymme kuluttamalla ja meidät on harhautettu kilpailemaan keskenämme. Lämpö, sosiaalisuus, lopultakin alkeellisuutemme, on viety meiltä. Emme enää elä arkadista aikaa suhteessa ympäristöömme, vaan äärimmilleen pingoitetun hyödyn ja ympäristöllisen vaaran aikaa. Yhdistäessään meidät teknologia myös alistaa meidät havainnoimaan tuotettua todellisuutta, tarkotushakuista ja usein pelolla vallitsevaa. Siksi käsintehdyllä kuvalla on selkeä tunteita tervehdyttävä rooli. Kaikki taiteet palvelevat aidon kokemisen tarvetta. Retinaalisen televisio- ja tietokonekuvan maailma kulkee nyt jo mukanamme älypuhelimiemme ominaisuuksissa. Silmiemme kohde näköhavainnossamme on ostettu, jotta se voitaisiin myydä meille. Pelit, palvelut, tiedot, kulkevat mukanamme ohjaten valintojamme ja altistaen ajankäyttömme. Kuvataide koskettaa meissä toista rekisteriä, kaipuumme ja yksinäisyytemme pohjaa. Taide prosessoi meitä kuin uni, nostaen esiin sen mitä oikeasti tarvitsemme ja minkä tajuntamme on valmis kohtaamaan. Taide liittyy kuolemaan ja rakkauteen, kuoleman peilistä etsimme rakkautta. Jos kiellämme kuoleman, ei aitoa rakkauttakaan voi löytyä. Taide ylittää hedonistiset hetket. Teemme monesti työtä vain ostaaksemme palveluita ja aikaa itseämme helliäksemme. Myös loputon tavaravirta, jota koemme tarvitsevamme, kätkee vain epäonnistumisemme todellisuussuhteessamme. Koskettaessaan syviä tuntojamme taide palauttaa meidät olevan ytimeen, sen kosmiseen hiljaisuuteen, voimakkaaseen läsnäoloon ja lohdutukseen. Citizen Kane hätkähtää, hänellä oli kaikki, nyt hänellä ei olekaan mitään, mutta toivo on silti syntynyt. Taide ratkoo elämän peruskysymyksiä hakien niihin uudenlaisia vastauksia. Innovatiivinen tiede mittaa myös maailmankuvamme muuttuvia raja-arvoja. Tiede ja teknologia antavat impulsseja taiteelle, mutta taide on sisimmältään vastavirta, se ei ole muoto, vaan sisältö. Sisällön välittämiseksi tarvitaan laatu. Laatu ei ole sisällön synonyymi, vaan tie sisällön hyvään kommunikointiin.

Taide ja kulttuuri ovat paras tapa kommunikoida eri territorioiden, uskontojen, heimojen ja aatteiden välillä. Silloin puhumme toisillemme kauneuden kautta ja silloin olemme klassisesti ajatellen myös lähellä hyvyyttä ja totuutta. Taide lentää linnuntietä toista ihmistä kohti, se ei mutkittele. Oikeastaan kuva kohtaa toisen ihmisen valon nopeudella. Esteettinen elämys ei ole pinnallinen tunne, vaan murros tai haava, jonka toinen voi kokea samaistuessaan kuvaan. Ihmisen yksilöllisyys muodostuu hänen henkilökohtaisesta näkökulmastaan ja hänen muistoistaan. Ihmisen minuus on läsnä hänen havainnossaan, siihen taiteen kapasiteetti ja syvyys perustuu. Siihen perustuu valitettavasti myös viestintäteknologian luoma illusorisuus. Kuvataide elää reaktiivisessa suhteessa muuhun kuvallisuuteen. Tehdäksemme oikeita valintoja ja hyviä tekoja emme voi perustaa vain tietoon. Meidän on koettava ja elettävä läpi suhdettamme maailmaan ja vastuuseemme siinä tunteittemme kautta. Musiikin puhuvat soinnut ja sävelten värit, uskontojen ritualisoitu teatteri, kirjallisen ilmaisun draama ja dramaturgia, tanssin abstraktit kaaret ja painovoimaa vastustava taituruus, historiankirjoituksen tulkintojen aallot, legendat ja myytit, arkkitehtuurin alttari muiden kaunotaiteiden äitinä – kaikki se mikä meitä elähdyttää hengenviljelyksen saralla, sitä taide edustaa. Kun sitten puhumme kirjan taiteesta taidegrafiikan pohjana, puhumme viivasta, valosta ja varjosta, psykologisesta havainnoimisesta. Useimmiten taidekouluissa grafiikan osastolle päätyvät piirtämisestä kiinnostuneet. Piirtämisen yhteydessä meidän on pakko puhua käsialasta, yksilön alkuperäisyydestä. Herkkyys on universumin rahayksikkö, näin joskus sanotaan. Herkkyys ei sekään voi olla ulkonaista, vaan aina humanistista. Vaikka piirtäisimme tiikerin, piirrämme aina myös itsemme. Käsityövaltaisina aikakausina, kaiken kuvan vielä ollessa piirrettyä, maalattua, kiveen hakattua tai saveen muovailtua, kuvanteon perusharjoitus oli vanhojen mestareiden kopiointia ja mallista piirtämistä. Perspektiivioppi, sommittelulait, värien vuorovaikutus ja oppi materiaaleista antoi pohjan ammattitaidolle. toisen tradition, toisen kulttuurin ihmisiä. Heiltä on viety omaisuus ja ihmisarvo, heillä ei ole virallista identiteettiä. Mutta heilläkin on samat perustarpeet kuin vastaanottavilla yhteisöillä ja ehkä mukanaan pitkän historian aarteita sisimmässään, näkemyksiä joista meidän kuuluisi oppia. Taide auttaa tässä. Hämmästyttävän paljon asioita myydään nykymaailmassa turvallisuuden nimissä, yhtälailla poliittisia aatteita kuin lastenrattaita ja autoja. he past has its source in the core of materia and being, and also of life. Boundlessness grows all the time, we live in an eternity. Whether time has a beginning or just a duration, art and culture convey the most important values of life and humanity. The era of engineering and communication technology which is our world is delimited in two ways, which makes this a competitive consumer society. We program ourselves to consume, we have been misled into competing with each other. Warmth, sociality, at the end of the day our primitivity, all this has been taken away from us. We no longer live in an archadic time in relation to our environment, but in a time where the struggle for benefits is extreme, and which is full of dangers to the environment. While uniting us, technology at the same time also subjugates us, compelling us to observe the reality that is being produced, a reality which is of a tendentious kind, often governing through fear. Therefore, a picture made by hand has a clear therapeutic role for our feelings. All the kinds of art serve the need for authentic experience. The world of retinal television and computer images is already following us everywhere in the functions of our smart telephones. The object of our visual perception has been bought, so that it can be sold to us. Games, services, information walk around with us guiding our choices, and taking possession of our time. Art touches another register within us, the bottom line of our longing and loneliness. Art processes us like a dream, showing us what we really need and what our consciousness is ready to face. Art is connected to love and death, through the mirror of death we seek love. If we deny death, we can’t find true love either. Art surpasses the hedonistic moments. Often we work just in order to buy services and time to spoil ourselves a little. The endless stream of things we think we need also just serves to conceal our failed relationship to reality. By touching our deeper feelings, art will bring us back to the core of being, to its cosmic silence, to a strong feeling of presence and consolation. Citizen Cane gets startled, he had everything, now suddenly he doesn’t have anything, but still, a hope is born. Art solves the fundamental questions of life by seeking new kinds of answers to them. Innovative science also measures the changing boundaries of our global picture. Science and

technology give impulses to art, but the innermost nature of art is a counterflow, it isn’t form, it’s content. You need quality to convey content. Quality isn’t a synonym for content, but a road to communicating content in a good way. Art and culture are the best ways of communication between different territories, religions, tribes and ideals. When we use them, we talk to each other through beauty, and are, according to the classical definition, also close to goodness and truth. Art flies in a beeline towards the other person, it doesn’t twist and turn. Really, the picture meets the other person with the speed of light. The aesthetic experience isn’t a superficial feeling, but a fracture or a wound, which another person can experience by identifying him-/herself with the picture. A person’s individuality is formed by his or her personal perspective and memories. A person’s ego is present in his or her perception, the capacity and depth of art is based on this. Unfortunately, so is the illusoriness created by communication technology. Fine art lives in a reactive relationship to the other kinds of pictoriality. To be able to make the right choices and do the right thing, we cannot build on knowledge only. We have to experience, and live through, our relationship to the world and our responsibility for it, by our feelings. The talking accords and the colours of the melodies in music, the ritualized theatre of religions, the drama and dramaturgy of written expression, the abstract arches of dance and its capacity to oppose the force of gravity, the waves of interpretations of history writing, legends and myths, the altar of architecture as the mother of all the other fine arts – everything that vivifies us in the process of cultivating our soul, this is what art represents. When we go on to talk about book art as the basis for printmaking, we talk about line, light and shadow, about psychological observation. Usually, students of art schools interested in drawing end up at the departments of printmaking. Speaking of drawing, we must also speak of handwriting, of the originality of the individual. Sensibility is the currency of the Universe, people sometimes say. Sensibility can never be just a thing that belongs to the outside, but it’s always something humanistic. Even if we draw a tiger, we always at the same time draw ourselves. In

the eras when handicraft dominated, when all pictures were still drawn, painted, cut in stone or formed in clay, the basic exercise for making a picture was to copy older masters of art and to draw from a model. The theory of perspective, the laws of composition, the interaction of colours and the theory of materials gave the basis for professional skill. In addition, students acquainted themselves with the written

sources, in the Western World with Antique literature, with the Old and New Testaments, with contemporary poets or playwrights. The techniques of printmaking, woodcut, intaglio, lithography or silkscreen printing have in today’s world found their complete antithesis in photography and the printing methods made possible by the computer. So what gift can today’s world give to the past? Is it possible to create, using the means of the communication technologies themselves, art that challenges technology? Every generation in history has already ranked the most valuable part of its acts/works. What kind of art does our own time need?

that receives them, and perhaps carry within themselves the treasures of a long history, views that we should learn from. Art is of help hereby. In the contemporary world, an astonishing number of things are sold in the name of security, political ideals as well as prams and cars. The negative side of this kind of marketing consists of the fears that feed the privileges of our rulers. The counterforce to this relies in art, in the dimension of true sensibility and depth, where we realize we are all on the same side.

Piranesin ja Dorén synkkiin visioihin viitataan usein, samoin Dürerin Ilmestyskirjan ratsastajiin. Etsin menneen ajan taiteen symbolisesta kuvastosta uusia solmukohtia, jotka selkeyttäisivät visiota. On olemassa dialogi menneen ajan kuvakielen ja nykyisin tuotetun ja käytetyn visuaalisen kuvatulvan välillä. Kuvakielen symbolinen sisältö on jatkuvassa muutostilassa. Arabian yöt -teossarjan idea syntyi toiveestani luoda jotain mikä viittaa menneen lisäksi myös nykyiseen informaatiotulvaan. Löytää, yhdistää ja ehkä myös ymmärtää. Työskennellessäni tämän projektin parissa tapahtui arabikevät, muutos voimatasapainossa ja poliittisissa rakenteissa. Toivoa, pelkoa ja epätoivoa. Tapahtumat ja rakenteet sumentuvat, visio selkenee hetkeksi kunnes kaikki alkaa taas muuttua joksikin uudeksi.

rt is not something that is frozen in time; bound to its original context forever. Fragments of old images constantly resurface in the cultural output of our society. The dark visions of Piranesi and Doré, along with the riders of the Apocalypse by Dürer, are often referenced. I study art of the past looking to discover a clearer vision: new nodal points in the symbolic imagery through time. There is a dialogue between the imagery of the past, and the flow of contemporary visual content. Imagery with its symbolic content in a state of contestant flux. The idea for the suite, Arabian Nights, initiated from my desire to create something that referenced the flow of information from both the past as well as the present. To discover, to connect and maybe to understand. The Arab Spring occurred while I was developing this project, a change of power balances and political structures. Hope, fear and despair. Events and structures blur; the vision clears again only to mutate and transform into something new.

Henkilökohtaisesti koen, että teokset kaivautuvat muistimme hämäriin kerrostumiin ja risteytyvät. Teoksesi tuntuvat luovan pinnalle sisäpuolen, josta kuvia kumpuaa aivan niin kuin muististamme. Piirrosprosessi järjestelee kuvat hajautetuksi, moninaiseksi maisemaksi. Viivasyövytykset tekevät niistä kerroksellisia. Havaitsen useita ilmaisumuotoja, joita voisi kutsua ”muistiksi”. Yksi voisi olla kirjallinen, symbolinen, dokumentaarinen. Ne ovat kuvia, jotka aktivoin itse ja mitkä kertovat historiallisista tapahtumista tai taidehistoriasta. Toinen on paljon henkilökohtaisempi alue eli se mitä olen kokenut omassa menneisyydessäni ja elämässäni. Ja viimeisenä eksistentialistisempi muoto, joka on lisääntyvien ja toisensa peittävien kerrosten muoto, lehteilevien leivonnaisten tavoin kerrostuva. Nämä verkkoon kietoutuneet kerrostumat ylittävät oman elämäni ja jopa historian aikajanan. Ne koskettavat primaaria ja ajatonta. Mutta kaikki tämä sekoittuu tekovaiheessa. hen you speak of your work, you talk about history by also about memory. How do you think your work activates and relates to these subjects? I personally see these pieces as digging into the confused layers of our memory by consolidating a cross-section. Your work seems to create a space within the layer where images come to life, as if directly emerging from our memory. The drawings tend to add them up in a level of decentralized landscapes, in series. And the etchings tend to mix them up in overlapping layers. I see several categories of expression in what we call ”memory”. One would be literary, symbolic, documentary. They are the images and the historic events they express, or from Art History, that I activate. The other is a more personal domain, all that I have experienced in my personal history and life. And then there is a more existentialist category, that of layers that accumulate and overlap, and

that of stratums that add up like the crust of a layered pastry. These layers intermesh passing restrictions of time, of my own life line or even that of history. They touch on an initial, timeless foundation. But everything gets mixed up in the process. Dürer, Posada, Hogarth, Schongauer ja kaikki saksalaiset ekspressionistit toimivat ehtymättöminä inspiraation lähteinä näyttämällä, mitä taidegrafiikalla voidaan saavuttaa. Kun suunnittelen töitäni, mietin aina taidehistoriallisia edeltäjiä ja useimmiten myös viittaan suoraan niihin teoksissani. Erinomainen esimerkki tällaisista vaikutteista on triptyykki Tommy Peeperz. Teoksen keskiosa on sommittelultaan suora kunnianosoitus Martin Schongauerin Pyhän Antoniuksen kiusauksille (1470-luku). Albrecht Dürer on vaikuttanut minuun eniten laattojen kaivertamisen, käsitteiden ja aiheiden osalta. Hänen varjonsa häilyy suurena työhuoneeni yllä, ja yritän jatkuvasti kilpailla hänen kanssaan. very day that I enter my studio, I feel that I have to make prints that are as great as my heroes’. Dürer, Posada, Hogarth, Schongauer and all of the German Expressionists offer never ending inspiration as to what can be achieved in the printmaking medium. I am always considering the art historical precedent when planning my work, and more often than not directly reference it in the resulting prints. “The Tommy Peeperz” triptych is a perfect example of this type of influence. The center panel of “Peeperz” is a direct compositional homage to Martin Schongauer’s “The Temptation of Saint Anthony” (1470s). In terms of the approach to cutting blocks, concepts and themes, my biggest influence is Albrecht Dürer. For me, his shadow over my studio practice looms large, and I am constantly trying to compete with him. I have been his biggest fan since the age of 13. Dürer was born in 1471 and I was born in 1971.....which is not a coincidence!

he concept of Art History includes an aspect of history that connects an artwork to a specific moment in time, a sort of testimony to an era. If we distort this dimension we are left with an artwork charged with a particular captivating energy which reverberates with us in our own sense of life, our own experience. I have sometimes been grasped by a painting, a sculpture, or a print. Attracted by the technique, the skill and maybe more specifically by the use of light. These elders give me a sense of belonging to a family, which in itself also implies the concept of transmission (sharing knowledge).

My practice is founded in the present with all the concerns of our era. In my work I repetitively use fragments. Perhaps I have been influenced by certain sketches of David (portrait by Bonaparte). Daily life, the mundane is of great interest to me because that is where all our horrors come into play in the present. I have also been amused to observe with confidence the woman peeing by Rembrandt. People (humans) are my favorite subject, the portraits of Fayoum have always fascinated me as have those by Antonello de Messina. My greatest influence comes from the Italian Renaissance. When I was 20, I discovered numerous chef d’oeuvres through one of my teachers and that influence has anchored me throughout the years. But I cannot even begin to cite all of those wonderful encounters. Patrick Merrill 1948–2010, Yhdysvallat / USA

ürer, Kollwitz, Goya, Masereel, and Ukiyo-e prints were Merrill’s Art History archive or as he commented, his “culture kicks into gear.” His engagement with the Book of Revelation began with this 2004 print, Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse: Famine, War, Death and Pestilence. His version of this recognizable and reinvented apocalyptic trope of an impending “end game” was inspired by manmade catastrophic events, not only the terrorist attack against the United States on 9/11, but also the ensuing climate of fear, anger, and revenge. Merrill stated that he chose to characterize what he considered the causes of the attack: here Famine is personified as a “corporate suit”; War is depicted with the face of George W. Bush; Death is a hooded Ku Klux Klan member; and Pestilence is a “mad scientist”. The riders are placed frontally and as they rush at the viewer, the horses leap across a field of skulls in the

foreground. Pleading hands and faces rise from the middle ground and in the background the horizon line is shaped by a clustered array of buildings against a solid black sky. In each panel three mushroom clouds rise from the city. This large print is meant to confront the viewer in a fashion akin to a Renaissance altarpiece or billboard advertising but, per Merrill, these woodcuts are also meant to “masquerade as small engravings”. His mark making is intimate and astounding. Each print bears tens of thousands of incisions, a cosmology of marks and meanings: from sumptuous crescents to expanses of solid black, from feathers to sinews to skulls. Pignon-Ernest is strict and precise in his drawings, but also respectful of historical sources. Art should talk about the present, step into the context of the other; fine art should leave the sanctuary and go to the street. Just as Caravaggio, in his time, (1571–1610) brought attention to poverty by bringing people from the street onto the stage of his paintings with dramatical side lighting; Ernest Pignon-Ernest reworks Caravaggio’s artwork and puts it back to the street. One incident follows another; from 1966 to this day, the artist has reacted to contemporary grievances: AIDS, abortion, apartheid, emigration, prisons and perhaps most of all, the fragile human passions seen in the mirror of daily life: great and small. Ernest PignonErnest’s art is always found at these crossroads. His travel companions might be a young Rimbaud or Pier Paolo Pasolini who became a martyr.

rnest Pignon-Ernestin taide syntyy nykyhetken vaikeista yhteiskunnallisista ristiriidoista ja vitsauksista. Hän puolustaa runollista näkemystä maailmasta suoraan ja poliittisesti. rnest Pignon-Ernest makes art from the difficult contradictions and the plights of contemporary society. He defends a poetic view of the world with honesty and politics. Pignon-Ernest is aware of material ephemerality, but his images focus on the basic humanity of suffering and social inequality and are then spread throughout the streets and ghettos of the urban landscape.

Teokseni lainaa aiheensa Mary Cassattin vuosina 1890–1891 tekemästä grafiikasta. Cassatt kuvasi teoksissa aikalaisiaan ja vertaisiaan, pariisilaisia naisia, arkitoimissaan, peseytymässä, pukeutumassa, teellä. Cassatt lainasi aiheet näihin teoksiinsa japanilaisista ukiyo-e -puupiirroksista, joissa kuvataan geishoja samankaltaisten askareiden äärellä. Cassatt rinnastaa (ehkä tahtomattaan) pariisilaisrouvat ja geishat. Rinnastus on osittain sopiva, molempien elämää sääteli patriarkaalinen ympäristö, jonka lomassa naiset elivät omaa elämäänsä. My subject is borrowed from a print made by Mary Cassatt during the years 1890–1891. In a contemporary scene of her peers, Cassatt depicts a Parisian woman in the midst of her daily activities; washing, dressing, at tea. Cassatt borrowed her subject from the Japanese Ukiyo-e woodcuts in which Geishas are engaged in a similar kind of daily activity. Cassatt parallels (perhaps unintentionally) the Parisian woman with a Geisha. The comparison is party accurate, in that the lives of both women were regulated by a patriarchal environment in which women rarely lived their own lives. The end of the world for the period of Cassatt’s work was the famous fin-de-siècle, and the Geishas’ world changed soon after the Ukiyo-e’s golden age when the Edo period came to a close and Japan was opened up to the outside world.

The title of my work alludes to the end of the world but in reality the theme is about everyday chores on the verge of an apocalypse: ordinary people absorbed in their own daily activities, on the precipice of a natural disaster, a nuclear war or a pandemic. We are currently right in the middle of an apocalypse. But as humans we have survived numerous apocalypses. Individually we experience different endings all the time. The concept of the apocalypse is interesting because it is built on a perception that sees the world as a stable entity which could possibly be terminated. Fear of the world ending is really a fear of change.

Caravaggio (1571-1610) was once unacceptable. He used ordinary people as models for biblical subjects. He was also the father of modernism. In addition to dramatic lighting he also used a modern, daring visual language that did not use a centered composition, but extended his subject beyond the edges of the canvas. I would like to include myself in this enormous continuum and history of western art with my own slightly expressive images.”

Zeus ja Ganymedes -teoksen lähtökohtana on toiminut italialaisen Adamo Tadolinin (1788–1868) marmoriveistos Ganymede and the Eagle. Valkoisesta kivestä hakattu patsas vaihtuu siniharmaaksi, grafiikankaltaiseksi kuvaksi hiekoitusepelistä toteutettuna. Minusta kiinnostavaa on kiviveistoksen idean muuttuminen. Perinteinen kiviveistos toteutetaan materiaalia poistamalla. Tekniikka on peruuttamaton, hidas ja raskas. Rajausta ja työtapaa muuttamalla, silti kivestä tehtynä, veistos vaihtuu keveäksi, muunneltavaksi ja graafiseksi, mutta myös tilaa käsitteleväksi teokseksi.

The piece Zeus and Ganymede is based on the marble sculpture Ganymede and the Eagle by Italian sculptor Adamo Tadolini (1788-1868). The chiseled white stone statue turns into a blue-grey, print-like image made of finely crushed rock. I am interested in changing the idea of stone sculpture. Stone sculptures are traditionally created by chipping material away. This technique is unforgiving, slow and difficult. By modifying the boundaries and procedures, a stone sculpture can become a light, malleable print while still dealing with space.

In my work I combine various elements of painting, wallpaper, and craft, as well as other historical elements of fine art. My pieces are constructed in and scaled to the restrictions of a given space.

ietin sitä hetkeä kun ensimmäisen kerran näin Die Brücke -ryhmäläisten puukaiverrusvedoksia. Näyttely oli varmaan Ateneumissa ja olin lapsi tai varhaisnuori. Hetki oli mullistava. Miten vahva viiva sai kuvassa hahmon tai tapahtuman nousemaan esiin. Kumartuva hahmo olikin yhtäkkiä symboli nöyryydelle, vaatimukselle tai salajuonelle. Ryhmäläisten tuoma vaikutus toistui kun näin niitä toisen kerran laajempana sarjana joitakin vuosia sitten uudelleen EMMA–Espoon modernin taiteen museossa.

For a long time I only saw Oscar Kokoschka’s prints in the form of book illustrations. The use and clarity of colour is distinct in the bewilderingly beautiful, yet small images. Black is carefully used for emphasis, crisp figures and elements of nature are seductive. Kokoschka’s simple and realistically drawn portraits have a certain resemblance to Kollwitz’s work: Emaciated body, stomach round from hunger.

Toinen hieno ja mieleenpainuva kokemus oli vierailla Käthe Kollwitz -museossa Berliinissä. Kollwitzin vahva moraalinen kuvaus kuljettaa katsojaa mukana kokemukseen köyhyydestä ja tuskan hetkistä aina kuolinvuoteelle saatteluun saakka. Miten metallikaiverruksen viivalla piirtyikin yhä tarkkeneva osoitus jostakin niin järkyttävästä tragediasta että se ei kaivannut muuta selitystä tai dramatisointia. Oscar Kokoschkan grafiikan teoksia katselin pitkään vain kirjan kuvista. Värien käyttö ja selkeys erottuvat huimaavan kauniina pienissäkin kuvissa. Mustaa on käytetty harkitusti tehosteena, raikkaat hahmot ja luontoelementit ovat viehättäviä. Kokoschkan yksinkertaisemmat ja realistisemmat piirretyt muotokuvat tuovat rinnastuksen Kollwitzin taiteeseen. Riutunut vartalo, nälän pullistama vatsa.

am thinking about the moment I first saw a Die Brücke woodcut print. The exhibition was probably at the Ateneum Art Museum and I was still a child or at most, in early adolescence. The moment was revolutionary. I was amazed by how a strong line could make a figure or event rise out of the image. The bowing figure immediately became a symbol of humility, authority or conspiracy. Another wonderful and influential experience was visiting the Käthe Kollwitz museum in Berlin. Kollwitz’s strong moral depiction carries the viewer along into the experience of being poor, from the moment of despair right up to the death bed. How an etched line could draw such a detailed expression of something so shockingly tragic, that no other explanation or dramatization was necessary.

uhteeni taiteen historiaan on tosi tärkeä taiteellisessa työskentelyssäni. Ihailen vanhojen taidegrafiikan mestareiden kuten Albrecht Dürerin, Rembrandt van Rijnin, Francisco Goyan ja erityisesti Giovanni Battista Piranesin töitä. Syksyllä 2007 minulla oli hieno mahdollisuus nähdä Piranesin vedoksia tosi läheltä taiteen restaurointipajalla Pariisissa. Se oli mahtavaa kokemus, ja tulen muistamaan sen pitkään. Graphica Creativa 2016 -näyttelyssä esillä olevat vedokset saivat innostuksensa Piranesin arkkitehtuuria ja raunioita kuvailevista vedoksista.

he history of art has had a very strong impact on my artistic practice. I admire the works of the grand masters of printmaking, such as Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt van Rijn, Francisco Goya, and especially Giovanni Battista Piranesi. In the autumn 2007, I had the great opportunity of having a very close look at his prints while visiting the art restoration studio in Paris. It was a great experience, which I will remember for a long time. I am very inspired by his works depicting ruins and architecture, which can be seen in my prints presented at the Graphica Creativa 2016 exhibition.
