01 DAYCARE CENTER

Set on Georgia Tech’s campus, this Daycare design tackles the challenge of providing a safe and versatile learning environment for children while accommodating the desires of regular university pedestrian traffic.

This design provides dynamic indoor and outdoor spaces which connect visually and audibly to university students relaxing in or passing through the spaces below.

Early in the development of this project I explored my early childhood memories through studies of representation. In a preliminary, phased studio project, I was charged to depict an early childhood memory through 3 different media: composite photograph, charcoal on paper, and tape on board.

This exercise brought me back to the mindset of a child before delving into details of a daycare design.

Ground floor entry into the Daycare center brings students and teachers through reception and administrative spaces, and upstairs to the second and third floor Classroom spaces. Classrooms progress in order of age from Infant to Older Toddler on the second floor, with Pre and After school classrooms on the third floor. Secure playful environments for children are designed throughout the daycare. Play stairs on the ground floor provide movement between floors and exercise for kids; top-level outdoor and indoor play yards are flexible spaces for children’s recreation; fritted glass creates playful and secure views to the courtyard at a child’s height, and unobstructed views across the building and into the courtyards for adults. Circulation through the buildings overlooks circulation through the site reminding university students who they once were and children who they may become courtyards for adults. Building circulation exist through a main and secondary staircase on either end of the building.

02 NICHE HOTEL

Constrained by the Oglethorpe Plan of downtown Savannah, GA, this niche hotel responds to the historic heirachy of local streets, while establishing order to a four front facade, and generating a public, community space within a private environment.

Program extends across a street for a new, local, social enclave. The two way intersection forms four prominent facades to the hotel complex.

The major Oglethorpe boulevard entryies and Drayton atria provide multiple prespectives of the hotel to travelers and locals during their initial approach on site.

Two demonstration kitchens lie at the heart of the hotel, drawing pedestrians to the center of the complex, and tying the buildings through social connections and programmatic duplication.

The hotel complex maximizes the number of guest rooms at dimensions of 15’x30’ and 12’x30’. Majority of room locations privelege Drayton Street for social connection, passive ventilation, and decreased thermal gains. Heights of buildings A and B match the elevations of adjacent buildings on the block.



On the first floor, relaxing spaces open to the pedestrian friendly Oglethorpe Boulevard. The main atria of both buildings receive entry from Drayton Street. Lobbies connect to either atrium on the North end of A and B; and the central opening of both buildings connect directly through to demonstration kitchens in back courtyards.

03 PORTMAN COMPETITION LBC This competition required the design of a living building on Georgia Tech’s campus. My team and I analyzed the campus organization as a network of neighborhoods designated by academic discipline.

My bioscience building was created as one component within the existing network of campus “neighborhoods”, which opened to my new campus parks as a means of linking disparate parts of the campus and communities surrounding Georgia Tech. It also serves a living, learning lab for sustainable systems and practices for students and adjacent community members.

Landscaping of the grounds surrounding the living building and the lot on the corner of sprint and 10th street establish a gateway alluding to healthy features of Georgia Tech’s campus.

03 SITE CIRCULATION

Existing circulation of pedestrian, vehicular and bike traffic currently aligns with existing roads and walking paths on Georgia Tech’s campus. Elements of the GT master plan expect to attmpt to improve neglected street intersections, disparate walking paths, and isolated segments of campus.

My team and I, through the living building design, seek to hemorage lost links of campus “neighborhoods” while forging new bonds to the adjacent, Homepark community, and opening opportunities for future healthy

The building is separated in to distinct zones of activity, which flow from one to another allow occupants to learn through exposure to new ideas. A majority of spaces, both interior and exterior, have views to other rooms, and all rooms have views to the outdoors. The building is designed to ensure a seamless transition between outdoor and indoor, blending the two as one comprehensive, learning environment.

My bioscience, Living Building design integrates the topography as an asset for elevations of public space that mediate the movement of students, faculty, and visitors into and out of the buildings. The building integrated with the landscape as one expanse of a communal environment that allows pedestrians to expolore the site and the building, and learn through exposure to building systems and activity.

04 OFFICE INNOVATION HUB This studio was a collaborative effort between students at Georgia Tech and WeWork NY to study and design the next generation of collaborative office space for the new GT CODA Bldg, represented in a 3 story innovaiton hub design.

Based on my early semester study of another building on GT campus, I developed a design which alotted distinct and flexible spaces for multiple persons needs; it encourages learning through selective and dynamic visibility and discovery through movement as a network of spaces generate a composed and accomodating space.

04 Qualitative studies of the CNES building led to a discovery of a loose correlation between the development of dense social networks and the adjacency of students who spent long hours in the building. This data highlighted the importance of adjacency to the formation of social connections; These studies demonstrated the importance of visibility, activity, and privacy for cultivating innovation.

04 STREET LAB

04 The Street Lab is the small group activity and work space which accommodates both private and group production within a vibrant ; vertical panels establish a heirachy of spaces from which private and collaborative activity function distinctly within a combined space.

Vertical partitions, a key element of innovative space noted in our studio’s design guidelines, were integrated as multifunctional private booths to allow personallized, small group or individual study in active space, and to break up the space for auxiliary conditions: 3-4 person group activities.

Veritcal panels expanded the funtioncal use of spaces within the Street Lab. Glass panels beginning at 4 feet serve as opaque writing surfaces for draft ing ideas while establishing a layered progression of privacy as users mover further from the major path of circulation.

Views into group spaces from the major path are muted by a two opaque surfaces until walkers reach the central space, where multiple options of working environments open to meet the various needs of a diverse student body or tech emplyment staff .

04 The desire for use of traditional 8-10 person group/ team meeting spaces remained a steadfast staple of academic desires expressed during studies of workspaces on Georgia Tech’s campus.

The flexibility and visible accessibility of the traditional conference room was key to establishing this intended eff ect. Moveable wall panels open three originally partitioned spaces into a single event space to be used for conventions of academic programs or professional opportunities, and gallery space for the display of technology as art or the even the integral display of art and technology in unison.

Direct receipt of information is a key way of tranferring inspiring new ideas the cultivation of novel actions. Auditoriums serve as a forum for presentations of information to a diverse audience whether they are familiar to the information or intrigued casual observers. As noted in the Queensland University of Technology Study in Toronto, Canada, people are more receptive to new information while in a comfortable and casual environment.

Surveyed workers in an open offi ce reponded that they felt strong anxiety in their workplace, an environment where they expected a semblance of privacy though felt that they were provided none.

This auditorium is the inverse environment, a space where users are given the freedom to move into and out of the space, engaging the presentation at their leisure with little obligation to refrain from entering, stay and watch or quickly pass through.

The partially enclosed glass facade distinguishes the space though allows the continuous circulation through the space. This informal environment also sets the expectation of open and engaging presentations which encourage interactivity and spontaneous conversation.

The Resource Lounge serves multiple functions. It is fi rst an overflow space for presentations and performances in the auditorium. Once exceeding maximum capacity of 65 people, an audience may continue to observe the performance from the lookout portions of the ambulatory ramp or the extended balcony or the lounge.

Second, the resource lounge is an informal event space or reception for large group parties, or activities where standing is involved.

Third, the resource lounge is a casual, standing club space where building occupants may rent shelf space for a designated period of time to supply media of their requested desires: periodicals, virtual devices, programmed hardware, etc. The media access space serves a direct learning tool for renters, and a varying perveyer of knowledge for the casual lingerer who’s passing time between meetings or events. The media resources provide topics of conversation in a casual environment,

05 TOKYO SMART CITY The Tokyo smart city studio investigates one of Tokyo’s 2020 Olympics sites at Misono, a satellite town of Tokyo’s metropolitan region. The studio aims to develop a smart and ecologically sound community as a pilot project to demonstrate how smart city is designed, evaluated and financed in Japan.

As part of the Energy and Conceptual Design Teams I helped create iterations on site design baased on Energy perfomance metrics of solar gain, consumption, thermal comfort, food and water.

Our tiered approach to design led to a profiled, performance based zoning of characterized blocks that combined across the site to develop a network that balances Energy performance directed towards our Net Zero goal.

Theme 1: Centralization

Agglomeration of land use and functions focused on increasing building proximity and density in the aim of generating better energy performance across the blocks.

Theme 2: Decentralization

Minimization of entrapped (courtyard) open spaces to promote inner block air flow testing whether it improves the quality of life experientially and qualitatively from the human comfort perspective.

Theme 3: Linear

Two types of linear relationships will be studied through the exploration of the theme. (1) Typologies 1 and 2 are concerned with the heights of the buildings adjusted from one side of the block to the other. Going from max permitted height to minimum in a linear method while maintaining baseline FAR. (2) Typologies 3, 4, and 5 examine the linear concentration of open space in a similar manner horizontally. This is accomplished by adjusting the relative proximity of buildings from one side of the layout to the other, thereby increasing or decreasing

Our studies looked at the effect of form on energy resilience, focusing specifically on the effect of FAR and BCR changes.

While holding FAR constant, BCR showed an inverse effect on energy gains and consumption, with increases in BCR improving solar capture and decreases reducing energy consumption.

Features affecting Solar Production and Energy Consumption were discovered to have an inverse relationship.

Building density, shape, orientation, height, roof top area along with other characteristics have dramatic effects on Energy performance.

TYPOLOGY PERFORMANCE

The final recommendations regarding conceptual design for the government officials and stakeholders of the Urawa Misono Smart City include the implementation of two major ideas on the site. The first is infrastructure changes – changing grey infrastructure to green infrastructure. These changes allow for the same amount of capacity while creating a better experience within the city. The implemented ideas of metabolism create a sense of co-location with layers of train station, green promenade, shopping, and parking all located within the most central part of the city.

The other major move is the planning support system that creates a framework for smarter development in terms of design, experience, and resiliency.

From the results in thermal comfort, the linear typology variation performed the best. As previously discussed, the typology is characterized by a linear gradient of building heights from one side of a block to another. A major finding from this analysis was the impact of tall buildings’ on thermal comfort - an increase in shade and wind speed creates an unpleasant environment. This needs to be taken into account when designing the densest areas of Urawa Misono.

06 SPACE SHIP This visual study seminar will be developed on the representation and articulation of detailed surfaces towards the design of futuristic spaceships. The 2D and 3D surface formations will consist of an assemblage of monochrome colors as a method to measure geometrical and aesthetical values.

For this visual study seminar, I extracted nonstandard surface geometries from conceptual images of concept cars, planes, boats, ships as well as office supplies, and random household items. I reconfigured these surfaces into new aesthetic and spatial conditions represented through a 2D image of a space ship. I modeled this 2D design in 3D using Rhino, then rendered it using V-Ray.

07 OPERATIONS 512 512 is a hands-on workshop and production seminar that sets out to explore customized workflows that range back and forth from manual physical spatial production to advanced digital modelling and fabrication techniques.

This exploratory course is inherently both digital and physical, often times simultaneously, as a prime directive built into the overall set-up is that participants will iteratively navigate a wide range of working methods and spatial / material results.

Fully exploiting the extensive resource of digital tools (Rhino and Grasshopper), CNC fabrication machines and traditional shop equipment at the DFL, participants of this course are required to produce highly refined, composite spatial frameworks that elegantly and precisely contain or define a volumetric envelope of 512 cubic feet.

08 EPA RAINWATER CHALLENGE The Campus Rainwater Challenge requires student teams to design an innovative green infrastructure project for their campus that effectively manages stormwater runoff while benefitting the campus community and the environment.

Living Bridges: Georgia Tech’s Eco Rain Plaza is a dynamic social and physical experiment, which aims to use green infrastructure to expand campus and community life to a currently intimidating, underused, dank and somewhat unsafe section of the Georgia Tech Campus.

My team challenged traditional storm-water strategies, but also revitalized a neglected rail depot, educated the local populous through water installations, and better incorporated the campus to the adjacent neighborhoods

09 ULI HINES STUDENT COMPETITION 2017 The ULI Hines Student Competition is part of the Institute’s ongoing effort to raise interest among young people in creating better communities, improving development patterns, and increasing awareness of the need for multidisciplinary solutions to development and design challenges.

The 2017 Competition challenged students to create a redevelopment plan for the Fleet Management facility near Goose Island on Chicago’s North end side. My team and I created a development plan designed to hemmorage broken site connections, improve local job prospects, revitalize existing buildings, and facilitate education to generate a biotech community in the area.
