Genealogy may be history at library By Sheryl DeVore
T
he Winnetka-Northfield Public Library’s decision to re-purpose the genealogy room into a meeting and programming room has caused an uproar among the community of volunteers who have worked in that space for many years. The library has been home to the North Suburban Genealogy (NSG) volunteers for approximately 45 years. Many of the volunteers are certified genealogists, and the basement genealogy room houses an extensive collection of books, microfilm and reference materials. The board’s decision in April stemmed from a need for more flexible space that will serve the larger community, explained Mary Hastings, spokeswoman for the library. quiet until the 1890s—repeatedly rejecting becoming part of Evanston—when it started paving streets and adding infrastructure. In the 1920s, in the area known as Gross Point (a story unto itself ), there was ethnic and religious division between Gross Point’s beer-drinking, German Catholic farmers and the puritanical Woman’s Christian Temperance Union in Evanston, a powerful religious group mixing feminism with fundamentalism. The Temperance Union scorned the Gross Point farmers’ alcohol consumption. Leary said that they looked down upon saloons serving alcohol. Then, the Constitutional dictate against alcohol (in the form of the 18th Amendment) came down. By the time the law was repealed, Wilmette’s farms had thinned following a postwar housing boom. The most iconic structure to emerge from that early period is the Gross Point Village Hall on Ridge Road between Lake and Wilmette, on the west side of the street between Washington and Schiller, where Leary said the Wilmette Historical Museum relocated in 1995. “It really speaks to the peak of the German-speaking farming Continues on page 12

Bushnell D keeps sights on crafting fiction
uring the first “Sex and the City” movie, Carrie Bradshaw and Mr. Big — after six television seasons of an onagain, off-again relationship — finally marry. After a second movie concludes, we’re led to believe life has a happy ending for Bradshaw, a character considered to be the alter ego of creator Candace Bushnell and who has been played on the big and small screens by Sarah Jessica-Parker. On a recent Saturday morning, Bushnell was asked what her reallife happy ending would be. “You get to a certain age where you realize a happy ending is a painless death,” says the bestselling author, now 56 and divorced, who lives in Connecticut with her “crazy poodles” when not enjoying her apartment in New York City. The author most recently of the novel “Killing Monica” is set to appear at The Book Stall in Winnetka on Friday evening, June 26, her first visit to the esteemed spot which has hosted scores of established writers. The novel — whose protagonist is a female author who wants to kill off her hugely successful fictional character Monica

as Edith Wharton and Evelyn Waugh as well as woman contemporaries such as Elin Hilderbrand, Bushnell has been writing professionally since age 19. The chick-lit author of novels such as “Lipstick Jungle” and “One Fifth Avenue” says writer’s block doesn’t faze her. “I’ve been writing for so long that I’m comfortable when I’m stuck — eventually one pushes through,” Bushnell notes. “I have the times like everyone else when it’s a beautiful day and I can’t concentrate.” Though many think the 1990s New York Observer columnist catapulted to fame quickly on the back of her “Sex and the City” work, that really wasn’t the case. “It happened very slowly. The book was out for a few years, and it was really two years of the show being on the air (on HBO) when it took off.” Though Bushnell didn’t act in the show or in the movies, she was often recognized in Manhattan
— and sometimes wishes she wasn’t. One guy came up to her on the street and said he knew of a rich man who throws parties where the men dress in diapers and the women wear nurses’ outfits. He said Bushnell had to see it. She demurred. “That was the weirdest thing that happened to me around the show,” she says. She won’t have to worry about those types of encounters in Winnetka. Though she doesn’t enjoy traveling to events like the one at The Book Stall, she’s always happy when she arrives. Says Bushnell, “Book signings are really fun. You get to meet your fans.” Enjoy the weekend.

Leary credited an Ames Emerich & Company bonds partner named Herbert Mulford — who was a businessman, former newspaperman, Wilmette historian and, later, president of Wilmette’s school board — as the museum’s fountainhead. When asked to identify Wilmette’s best resident, Leary diplomatically deferred, citing well-known Wilmette residents such as Charlton Heston, who lived at 325 Maple Avenue, Ann-Margret and Bill Murray, who attended St. Joseph Catholic School and lived across from Mallinckrodt College. Famous people who live there now include former Saturday Night Live star Julia Sweeney, best known for her portrayal of Pat, whose gender was never quite figured out. For those who love Christmastime, Wilmette’s inventor of the distinctive bubble lights, Carl Otis, would be high on the list. Otis conceived of the bright, colorful lights in the early 1940s and first offered them for sale through the Noma Corporation. Otis lost control of his patent in 1950, when he opened a small hobby shop in Wilmette called The Otis Company at 619 Green Bay Road. The store closed in 1957. Wilmette is one of several communities to claim origin of the Girl Scout cookie. Apparently, in the 1930s, a Girl Scout troop leader enlisted the

Wilmette’s Girl Scouts even appeared for their cookie campaign on the front page of the Chicago Daily News. Wilmette unfortunately is where America’s first recorded serial killer, Herman Mudgett, lived. The mass murderer, who preyed upon visitors to Chicago’s World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 pretending to be a pharmacist and going by the name Dr. H.H. Holmes, built a house in Wilmette and commuted to Chicago where he had designed and built a hotel specifically as a place to torture and murder women and children. Leary said that Mudgett’s Wilmette house, located on 11th street between Lake and Central, is no longer standing. Mudgett, who had a wife and daughter, murdered women like Jack the Ripper and killed
as many as Chicagoland’s John Wayne Gacy — with one estimate as high as 200 victims. Mudgett was arrested in Philadelphia in 1895. At the time, Leary said, the press camped out at his house in Wilmette trying to get an interview with his wife. Leary said that President Theodore Roosevelt came to Wilmette more than once. Roosevelt, he explained, was close to an Army chaplain who had been part of Roosevelt’s Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War. Roosevelt’s friend, Father Edward Vattmann — namesake of the park on Lake Avenue — had retired to Wilmette. Vattmann had ministered to Sioux Indians in South Dakota, where he may have first encountered Roosevelt, and served with Roosevelt’s contingent known for charging San Juan Hill. Whenever Roosevelt came to Chicago, Leary said, he would stop in Wilmette to spend time with Father Vattmann. Many Wilmette streets remain historic, with paving bricks laid between 1890-1915. Many North Shore towns used paving bricks but Wilmette’s remain partly due to a government-sponsored project to put unemployed men to work during the Depression. The workers were assigned to remove the bricks, pour new sand and replace each brick turned upside down. Leary said that’s partly why Wilmette still has miles of streets with paving bricks. in a basement room that formerly housed genealogy materials. Hastings noted that The Studio has been in high demand and received more visitors than the genealogy room in the past year. At this stage, there is no concrete deadline for when the genealogical materials will be moved; rather the board has asked the volunteers to come up with ideas of where to relocate the material by June 30. At this time, only historic Winnetka phone books have been moved to the Winnetka Historical Society. Hastings noted that the library’s priority is to find a local place with public access to house the material. Hastings further noted that a lot of the material is in fragile condition and that the current basement location is not the optimal place for storing it. Volunteers are concerned that the library’s plan will put an end to genealogy there. Volunteer Ron White views the genealogy room as an important community center for reading and discussion. “They do not yet realize that separating the special collection from the Consulting Genealogist volunteers (certified by NSG) will end forever the genealogy activity at Winnetka Public Library,” White wrote in an email. In response, the library has looked at the Chicago’s Newberry Library for genealogy programming ideas that it plans to run in the fall.

o celebrate the 105th Lake Bluff Fourth of July Parade, the Lake Bluff Fourth of July Parade Committee commissioned the design of a limited edition 2015 poster. Stephanie Spino, a Trinity International University graphic designer, designed the poster. Spino is also responsible for the layout of the 2015 Parade Book. The inspiration for the poster was a photograph from the 2014 parade of two children standing next to the World’s Tallest Uncle Sam. Spino’s design features an illustration of that image set alongside vintage-style block-print text. “Since this year’s parade theme is ‘Independence Rocks,’ we thought it would be cool to create a vintage rock ‘n’ roll style poster,” says Deb Dintruff, president of the Lake Bluff Fourth of July Parade Committee. Posters cost $10 and all proceeds benefit the Lake Bluff Fourth of July Parade. Posters will be sold at the Lake Bluff Farmers Market on Friday, July 3. Posters will also be for sale on the day of the parade, while supplies last. The parade has many sponsors — Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital, Advantage Home Health Plus,

After restoring the porch, which had been enclosed by a previous owner, she unearthed samples of the exterior paint colors which were used to replicate the original colors. The stucco was painted a dark beige which contrasted against the cream col-
ored wood trim. And while Hein added modern updates such as air conditioning and insulation, she carefully maintained the character of the home by preserving the original ripples and texture in the home’s walls.

House owner has Wright stuff By Emily Spectre
H
istory buffs gathered at the Glencoe Public Library on June 14 to learn about Maggie Hein’s labor of love rehabbing her Frank Lloyd Wright home located in Glencoe’s Ravine Bluffs area. Hein is the owner of 272 Sylvan Road, also known as the Chesley Perry House. The presentation called “Making It Wright Again” was part of a series of community programs the Glencoe Historical Society has sponsored in partnership with the library throughout the year to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of Ravine Bluffs. Ravine Bluffs features seven homes, three street markers and
a bridge all designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The property was originally owned by Elizabeth Booth, and it was her husband Sherman Booth (Wright’s attorney) who commissioned Wright to design a mansion on the property in 1911. The resulting plan was over-budget, and so instead of a palatial estate with landscaping designed by Jens Jensen, the property was subdivided and transformed into the Ravine Bluffs area when five Wright-designed homes were built in 1915. During Hein’s presentation, she shared her tribulations as she endeavored to renovate and restore one of these Wrightdesigned homes over a twoyear period. The original owner,
Chesley Perry, was instrumental in the founding of the Rotary Club and owned the house until 1953. Over the years the house changed hands three times. By the time Hein purchased it in 2012, she acknowledged the house looked a little bit tired, “but it really didn’t look that catastrophic,” she said. Hein was taken in by the home’s big windows and the prairie style fireplace and woodwork. But she knew there was work to be done, since a home inspection revealed rotted wood, stucco damage, carpenter ant damage, a carport that suffered water damage — and then there were the dated kitchen and baths. Hein turned to Glencoe architect Scott Javore, who special-
izes in historic preservation, to renovate and restore the home. By studying what was left of the original renderings, they created a plan that was within Hein’s budget and added modern updates that still restored some of the original details of the house.

The upcoming excavation is part of an $800,000, four-year grant at Lake Forest College from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to involve students and faculty in urban archaeological digs in Chicago, and in complementary coursework in various disciplines.

Mowry’s been invited to exhibit her work at several shows, including the American Craft Expo in Chicago, where she displayed her pieces side-by-side master craftsmen. In part, her achievements are attributable to a background in the arts.
“When I make jewelry, it’s just like painting to me, except without the paint,” she says. It could also be in her genes. Mowry’s father was an inventor, who was no stranger to welding tools and the sort of technical acumen necessary in jewelrymaking; today, he’s his daughter’s
biggest fan. More likely, though, Mowry owes her success to her passion for the craft — a genuine admiration for her peers and willingness to pick up new skills. “I’ve gotten here because of this drive in me to do it,” she says. “That’s the fun part about it all.

You may have to look for some time before you locate that perfect home, but it is far better to look and remain optimistic than to settle and squirm under the burden of an unwanted mortgage. If a home does not “feel” right, trust yourself, and remember that this is a real-world decision, so holding out for the “deal of the century” is as fruitless as jumping at the first opportunity that comes along.

Supporters of Winnetka-based Erika’s Lighthouse (ELH) took in the view from the top of the Willis Tower Sky Deck during the organization’s 11th annual fundraiser in May. “Monte Carlo Night” featured casino games and great food and drink, as well as a chance to mingle with ELH’s founders. Where dining and music mix elegantly By Simon Murray
C
rain’s Chicago Business called it “the elite picnic scene” at Ravinia. A commenter on Foursquare, with a laconic affirmation only the digital age could produce, noted, “Everything’s good here.” However you take your recommendations — whether hot, cold, or tweeted — Ravinia’s Freehling Room (named after former Ravinia Chairman Stanley Freehling) has, for more than 18 years, delighted its patrons with delicious cuisine. “It’s basically like a country club,” says Carlos Nieto, the critically acclaimed restaurateur who runs the Freehling Room. To the donors go the spoils. The menu, which changes every week, features such delicacies as the miso-marinated Alaskan halibut; a petite filet served with purple potato rosettes in a redwine reduction; and an ahi tuna marinated in a honey-miso sauce and piled high with an extravagant mango salsa. That last one

especially, “is one of the recipes we’ve been developing over the years,” adds Nabor Vasquez, the head chef there for almost a decade. The Freehling Room, like Ravinia, is now open. On classical performance evenings, with the airy melodies of string quartets filling the night’s sky, the above fare will be served to donors at the Guarantor level or higher ($6,000 or more). But when, say, Tony Bennet and Lady Gaga are crooning “Cheek to Cheek”, or as ZZ Top grinds his electric axe like a lumberjack, the Freehling

Don’t have the money for a donation to the higher arts? Or maybe you don’t like music and grow agitated at the thought of a dapper octogenarian singer, or you don’t go goo-goo for Gaga. Or maybe, just maybe, you’re one of the lucky few who have given considerably to the arts — we thank you — and have taken a seat with a flute of amber bubbly making its own indecipherable fizzy music, feasting on chef Nabor’s culinary creations as a symphony explodes with immeasurable grandeur, seemingly making the light-speed trip to the distant stars and back and filling your soul with unending, overwhelming, radiant joy. No? Regardless, below is a recipe that you can prepare in the comfort of your home — whether patron, donor, plebe, crooner, or Gaga.
The Freehling Room’s Ahi Tuna with Mango Salsa TOTAL TIME: 3 Hours Serves: 4
2 pounds ahi tuna, cut into 4 steaks Marinate 1/3 cup light soy sauce 1 tablespoon honey 1 tablespoon cumin seeds 1 tablespoon juice of a lemon 1 jalapeno, seeded and minced 1 tablespoon olive oil 1. Mix together soy sauce, honey, cumin seeds, and lemon juice. Sprinkle tuna with sea salt. Pour the soy sauce mixture over the tuna. Marinate in the refrigerator for 2 hours. Mango Salsa 1 mango, cut into small cubes 1/3 cup radish, minced
1/3 cup red onion, minced ½ cup fresh cilantro, chopped 2 tablespoons capers, drained 2 tablespoons juice of 2 lemons Sea salt to taste 1. Combine mango, radish, onion, cilantro, and lemon juice. Once well blended, season to taste with the sea salt, add the capers. Let the salsa sit about 30 minutes for the flavors to blend. 2. Heat oil in a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Season tuna with salt and pepper on both sides, cook for about 2 minutes on each side, until just slightly browned but still reddish-pink on the inside. Remove the tuna steaks to plate. 3. Top each serving with a large spoon of the mango salsa. Serve immediately.

ometimes you feel like escaping the here and now in a fleeting daydream. You imagine sights and sounds of the past, a nostalgia trip. But wait. Revisiting old times can get old. So this time, instead of meandering backward, you try
the future. Forgetting nostalgia for the moment, you coin the word: “newstalgia.” And try a “newstalgia” trip. In your mind it’s 2025. You hop into your self-driving car for a run up Sheridan Road to get a bag of chips. It goes the legal speed and parks itself in a legal space.

You grab your chips, and the employee-free store reads a different chip embedded in your thumb, debiting your account. You head home with no stress. But if your car does detect stress, it’ll play music to calm you. Thinking about all this should provide a pleasant
escape. But, no. This newstalgia trip is turning into a bad trip. Frankly, you’d have liked to have driven faster. You’d have parked at the curb, taking your chances on a ticket. You’d have preferred the store to have humans instead of sensors.
And when it comes to music, you don’t want your car out-thinking you. This gets you in a mood for a mental get-away once again. You imagine your first car, an oil-burning, old stick-shift two-door with a radio that let you choose the station — and a gas pedal that called you
boss. Those were the days. You imagine driving past the pizza joints of Highland Park in that old car again, with its ripped seat and horsepower-heavy engine. You find yourself smiling. Looks like “newstalgia” gets its butt kicked by nostalgia. Well, you tried.

Ramblers hit the ‘jackpot’ with this special group of seniors BY BILL MCLEAN, sports@northshoreweekend.com

he six Loyola Academy lacrosse captains marched together to receive the firstplace trophy, each a senior, each smiling, hand in hand, on 11 good ankles. Megan Schulte, a speedy middie, had injured her right ankle in the first half of the state championship game, a 6-4 defeat of Hinsdale Central earlier this month in Northbrook. The other number of the day was seven. Loyola Academy’s girls have won that many consecutive state titles under Ramblers coach John Dwyer. All six seniors — the team’s only seniors — had been varsity players for three years. “That was my favorite moment of the season, that walk,” Caroline Heldring, an attack, recalls. “That also was a bittersweet moment, knowing the six of us would never get to be together again on a field, wearing our Loyola uniforms.” The sextet got together in February for a long weekend in Naples, Florida, home of a Claire Rushin relative. Rushin, a defender, was a few months removed from helping Loyola Academy’s swimming and diving team capture the first state championship in program history. She swam on the crew’s fifth-place 200-yard freestyle relay. On land, in her other sport, Rushin often relayed observations to her lacrosse teammates. Rushin, a Glencoe resident, liked to scout opponents, once traveling all the way to Hinsdale Central (round trip: 64 miles) to view and jot down the Red Devils’ tendencies and strengths and weaknesses. “That was a great trip for us, bonding in Florida, getting closer, getting to know each other really well,” Kathleen Hulseman, an attack, says. Defender Laine Dolan, like Schulte, calls Glenview home. Annie Nick, another attack and a superb athlete and passer, lives in the Chicago neighborhood of Sauganash. Heldring resides in Kenilworth, Hulseman in Winnetka. They all played championship
Heldring led the Ramblers in assists as a sophomore, no small feat. That squad boasted more than a handful of Division I-bound lax players. She led the state in assists in her junior season. Of the goals LA scored in a 12-8 defeat of New Trier High School in the state title game in 2014, five originated from the webbing in Heldring’s stick. She passed. She scored. Defenders reeled, wondering, Is she going to look for a teammate or a target at the back of a net? Near the end of the 2015 lacrosse season, Schulte looked to medal … in Charleston, home of Eastern Illinois University and the site of the Class 3A state track and field championships. Schulte, busy and fast, had also made the Ramblers’ track and field varsity team in the spring, an odd double, an impressive double. She served as the anchor leg of the Ramblers’ 400-meter relay. The quartet, runner-up at a sectional, did not advance from a state preliminary on May 21. J
ustin Mills learned at a young age that the worst walk in baseball is the one back to the dugout. Bat in hand. Like most baseball players, he has an aversion to the strikeout. The K — especially the backward variety — should be avoided at all costs. “Keeping the strikeouts down and the walks up,” Mills says. “That’s the stat I’ve hung my hat on.” During his days — 6th, 7th and 8th grades — with the North Shore Baseball Academy (NSBA) Hawks, he averaged maybe three strikeouts per summer season. Not much has changed. Mills, who recently completed his junior season at Highland Park High School, continues to steer relatively clear of the strikeout. During his two all-league seasons with the Giants, Mills has been ridiculously good at getting on base. His initials should be OBP. As a sophomore, his on-base percentage was a lofty .474. He walked 12 times and struck out 10 times in 96 varsity plate appearances. This past spring, his OBP was an even loftier .492. He reached base 28 times via a walk or hit by pitch, while he fanned only 12 times. Mills claims that he doesn’t stay up late pondering the term sabermetics. He’s not flipping through the pages of “Moneyball”. “I’m not all that familiar with it,” he says. And yet, the left-handed swinging Mills is the very essence of the tough out. “He gives you quality at-bats,” Highland Park head coach Dan Casey says. “He’s a multi-faceted hitter. He’ll hit the ball hard in one at-bat and then lay down a bunt in his next at-bat. It makes him a winner. “Just watch him play. That says it all,” the coach adds. There’s intent and purpose when Mills enters the batter’s box. He doesn’t chase a lot of pitches
out of the strike zone. “My approach is to wait for my pitch,” he says. “If I stick to that, I’ll hit the ball hard somewhere. If I go out of the zone, I’m likely to hit a softball. I’ve learned to be patient.” Hitting in the middle of the order, the left-handed swinging Mills batted .340 with 23 runs this past spring. Eleven of his 32 hits were for extra bases. As a sophomore, he banged out 31 hits and knocked in 18 runs to finish with a .392 batting average. Making the most of an opportunity is nothing new for Mills. His force-feed moment came during the summer of 2013. That’s when he jumped into “baseball’s deep waters.” Summoned by Casey, Mills, who had just completed his freshman season with the Giants, was called up to play with juniors and seniors in the Barrington MidSummer Classic American Legion Tournament. “We were short a guy,” Casey says. “I figured that I would just sit on the bench and watch the seniors play,” says Mills. Instead, Mills was inserted into the action, and to his credit, he didn’t squint when the lights — the sunlight, in this case — were on. His first game “up” proved to be magical, when he smacked a two-strike, run-scoring, gamedeciding single against Arlington Heights to put HP into the winners’ bracket. “He’s never left my side since,” says Casey. “It was pretty cool,” Mills says. “My whole family was there watching.” Since then, he’s been a fixture in center field at Wolters Field. Handling the bat is one thing. Learning how to chase down long flies in the gap was the real challenge for Mills. The left-handed Mills grew up playing first base. “But growing was not in the cards for me,” says the 5-foot-9, 175-pounder. “I didn’t have much of a choice. I ended up in the outfield.”

Instead of gunning for an extra base and being thrown out at third, Mills picked up his third-base base and put on the brakes. “I’m glad to hear him to do that especially with his coach (Casey) not around,” says Casey. “As a team, we really focus on going from first to third and hitting and running. And I know Justin takes pride in that part of our practice.” “I’ve learned from my mistakes,” admits Mills, an honor roll student at HPHS. “Running into outs was a big problem for me in the spring. I ran stop signs quite a few times. It turned into a little bit a joke. Guys in the dugout had some fun with it.” Fine-tuning his game is a necessary step for Mills. He’d like to play baseball at the next level. He’d like to trace the same steps of his cousin, Deerfield’s Jon Fixler, who played Big Ten baseball with Indiana University before being drafted — as a catcher — in the 19th round by the Houston Astros in 2007. “I’ve been on a baseball journey,” says Mills, who plays his club baseball with the Lake County Stars. “(Playing college baseball) has been a goal of mine for a long time. I’m looking to see how it plays out. “I’m putting in a full effort,” he adds. “I hope it works out.” Notable: Mills attended the Chicagoland Classic Showcase with senior teammate Noah Stern. drian Walker went down and stayed down in a soccer match last month, a sequence that startled some, concerned others. The Lake Forest High School back, a junior at the time, had always popped back up after a collision or a slip or an inadvertent trip by a hardcharging forward. Paige Bourne, a teammate, watched and waited, convinced she’d see Walker return to her feet and walk off whatever she had to walk off in a Class 2A St. Viator sectional semifinal on May 27. Walker stayed down. “I was shocked,” Bourne, a classmate and a midfielder, recalls. “A lot of us were. She’s tough, driven, goes after every ball, and she never stops.” Only a serious injury would force Walker to leave the field under the power of others. It turned out to be a serious injury. Torn-ACL serious. “I planted my right foot, went to turn …,” Walker says. “I thought it was serious. No, I knew it was serious. The trainer tried to reassure me, told me, ‘It might be just a hyperextended knee.’ ” Lake Forest, the reigning state champion, lost 2-0 to Carmel Catholic in the sectional semifinal after losing its hearty, durable defender. Two days later — and nearly two weeks before her surgery — Walker, still tough, attended the Class 3A Evanston Sectional soccer final between New Trier High School and Loyola Academy. Her father, Victor, joined her, as did her younger sister and Scouts teammate, Gwen, another defender in the family. Bourne and midfielder Sheridan Bufe, another Scouts teammate, also sat near Walker in the bleachers. All four Scouts are members of FC United’s Select U17 club, a US Youth Soccer Region II qualifier. They made the trip to Evanston
to support the FC United Select U17 players on the New Trier and Loyola teams. A post-op Walker headed to northern Wisconsin last weekend to support her U17 club (1-1 in pool play, through June 22) in Region II action. The collective reaction to Walker’s injury, among FC United coaches and players, was one of disbelief, an exasperating, “No, not another one.” Walker’s ACL surgery was the club’s seventh, Loyola Academy star forward Devin Burns having undergone two of them. “Devin,” Walker says, “helped prepare me for what to expect before and after my surgery. She’s been great. My family, my teammates, my friends … everybody has been great. I got fresh watermelon, my favorite treat, after the surgery. I received seven books I hope to read before the end of the summer. My sister, she gets me anything I need at home because I can’t move much. Gwen, so nice, is keeping me positive. She’s been super positive.” It usually takes between six and nine months to recover fully from ACL surgery. Look for Walker to be as good as new, at least, in the sixth month, in December of her senior year. The driven soccer player is driven to ace her stages of rehab, week after week, to do whatever it takes to accelerate the healing process. “You never want anybody to have to suffer an injury like this,” Scouts soccer coach Ty Stuckslager says. “But if there’s anyone out there who can recover well and come back stronger than ever after knee surgery, it’s Adrian.” Walker, a three-year varsity player and two-time all-North Suburban Conference selection (2014, ’15), was an integral piece of Lake Forest’s state championship squad in ’14, the first in program history. LFHS edged
slager says. “I’ve seen the video of the play. I’ve seen a photograph of the play. It happened so fast in the video. Too fast. If you ever see the photo of the play, you’d realize it wasn’t a good play; it was a great play. You can see Adrian’s desire in the image, her will. She has tremendous physical attributes, soccer skills. She also has something that’s overlooked — an ability to read the game. It’s an amazing ability. She reads the game well. She’s a student of the game.” Walker and her family moved from Arizona to Lake Forest when Walker was a third-grader, a youngster who had tried soccer, gymnastics, basketball, softball and cheerleading. Soccer and gymnastics. Gymnastics and soccer. None of the other activities ever cracked her top two. Walker became a soccer-only player in the fifth grade, gymnastics biting the chalk. Her best friends played soccer. Her fervor for the sport reached a fever pitch on pitches. Walker and many of the current FC United Select U17 players (guided by Loyola Academy coach Craig Snower) placed third (U16) at US Youth Soccer nationals last summer. “Adrian is fearless in soccer, fearless in everything she does,” says midfielder Bina Saipi, a New Trier senior-to-be, an FC United Select U17 member and Walker’s future soccer teammate at DePaul University, where former Scouts standout Lucy Edwards, a midfielder/defender, will be a Blue MEETING OF THE MINDS: Lake Forest High School’s Adrian Walker Demons sophomore in the fall. They started out as
jokesters, quick to make the upperclassmen laugh, Walker notes. Levity lifts teams, lessens stress in a stressful, physical sport. The rookies started to play serious minutes midway through the season. Their talent was no laughing matter. “The older players,” Walker recalls, “eventually trusted us, and we became a close team. What I really like about soccer is the team aspect, knowing a team can come together when it falls behind and then show its resiliency after making mistakes. It’s not like baseball, where one big hit, at the end, suddenly ends the game.” This past spring, Walker, a two-year varsity veteran, looked around. She was one of the older ones now. The younger ones looked to her for leadership, advice, encouragement. Walker welcomed the responsibilities. “I talked when we played, but I wasn’t a cheerleader out there,” Walker says. “I knew it would be important to show intensity and leadership this year, to be more vocal than I was during my first two seasons.” Stuckslager asks his players to evaluate themselves and the team’s performance after each season. He must get a variety of assessments from teens. A goalkeeper doesn’t always see a match or a stretch of matches the way a forward or a midfielder or a back does. Student-athletes are accustomed to receiving grades, not giving them. Stuckslager received his third evaluation from Walker in early June. “Adrian’s evaluation is always one of the most thorough and most insightful,” the coach says. “She examines the game well and understands the game well. She’s quite honest about her game, always has been. That, I’ve always believed, separates the top players from the good players.”

innertime at the Jorgensen household in Kenilworth approaches, aromas wafting, plates and utensils and glasses all set. Steen Jorgensen, son of Jim and Jean, should be hungry, another school day in the life of The Joseph Sears School student in the books. The son is not home. Jean Jorgensen calls Steen Jorgensen. Mom knows exactly where her son is and exactly what he is doing. Steen, a grade-schooler, is still at Sears, whipping a lacrosse ball at the outside wall of Sears’ gymnasium. Thump, thump, thump … “Hours, I’d be there for hours and hours,” Steen, now a 2015 New Trier High School graduate, recalls. “Just me, a ball and a wall. And sometimes a friend.” Maybe a year earlier Jorgensen’s sport had been hockey. That all changed when Ben Connelly, one of Jorgensen’s future lacrosse teammates at New Trier, toted a lacrosse stick to Sears School one day and used it to hurl lacrosse balls at recess. Jorgensen stared and smile and envisioned, his eyes turning into lacrosse ballsized eyes. He no longer wanted to stop pucks as a goalie on ice. He wanted to throw lacrosse balls at a goalie on turf. “As soon as I saw Ben holding that stick that day, I knew … I knew I had to play lacrosse,” Jorgensen says. It is April 30, 2015, and New Trier’s boys lacrosse team is getting ready to face host Evanston Township High School. Jorgensen, a 6-foot-1, 170-pound attackman, is warming up with Connelly, throwing and catching, throwing and catching. Connelly, a senior attackman and a 2014 US Lacrosse All-American, is hurting. His ankle isn’t right. He is dealing with a stress fracture, an injury he hopes will heal before the start of the state playoffs.

He crossed paths with right winger Marian Hossa after the game, one wearing sneakers, the other in skates. Jorgensen held up one of his hands, hoping to share a high five with the Slovak, good ol’ No. 81. Hossa handed his stick to the teen instead, a memento that rests above a window in Jorgensen’s bedroom. “I could not believe it,” Jorgensen, still in disbelief, says. “We were in a hallway. He looked at me, and he gave me the stick, just like that. We didn’t say much. I said, ‘Thank you,’ I think. I hope I said, ‘Thank you.’ ” A most grateful Division III men’s lacrosse program in Indiana? DePauw University, Jorgensen’s next stop. The Tigers went 6-9 this past spring, in only their third year of competition. Inside the Press Box At the Pro Level | Minor League Baseball Ogden Raptors: An instant success. In his pro debut on June 18, Lake Forest High School grad Chris Godinez, who was drafted in the 18th round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft on June 10 by the Los Angeles Dodgers, came up with a single, walk and two runs for the Ogden Raptors. Godinez, a second baseman, played his college baseball at Bradley University. He batted .302 for the Braves with a .505 on-base percentage during the 2015 season. Pensacola Blue Wahoos: Ben Klimesh, a New Trier grad, is putting together a solid season on the mound. The right-handed relief pitcher has appeared in 13 games for the Cincinnati Reds’ Double A team. He has five saves in six save opportunities with a 3.31 earned run average. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Klimesh, who played collegiately at Trinity University in Texas, has allowed only 10 hits in 16 innings. He has 18 strikeouts and only five walks. The Southern League is hitting .182 against him. Klimesh, 25, opened the season with Louisville in the Triple A International League. He gave up 11 hits in 12.1 innings with a 3.65 ERA. He struck out six while walking 16. Springfield Cardinals: He’s starting to stack all-star seasons. For the second year in a row, New Trier High School grad Charlie Tilson has earned all-star recognition. The speedy center fielder, who is hitting .289 with 22 steals this season for the Class AA Cardinals, will play in the 79th Annual Texas League All-Star Game on June 30 at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi, Texas. Last summer, as a member of the high Class A Palm Beach Cardinals, Tilson played in the Florida State League All-Star Game. Tilson, 22, is ranked No. 9 in the Cardinals farm system, according to MLB Pipeline.
At the College Level | Northwoods League Kenosha Kingfish: Highland Park High School grad Brett Shimanovsky once again is putting up impressive pitching stats. The left-hander leads the Kingfish with three saves. In 8.2 innings, Shimanovsky has recorded 14 strikeouts to go along with only two walks and six hits. His ERA is a sparking 2.07. Last summer, he went 3-1 with 10 saves with a 2.84 ERA for the Kingfish. He gave up only 21 hits in 25.1 innings with 24 Ks. Shimanovsky is coming off a stellar sophomore season at St. Louis University. He helped the Billikens to a 35-21, going 5-1 with a team-best five saves and a team-best 2.45 ERA. He allowed only 45 hits in 51.1 innings. Madison Mallards: After opting not to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Highland Park High School grad Jason Goldstein is playing his summer baseball with the Mallards. The highly regarded catcher went 2-for-6 with a double and a stolen base in his first two outings with his Northwoods League team. Goldstein was one of nine players from the University of Illinois (50-10-1) to be selected in the recent MLB Draft. He was picked by LA in the 17th round after hitting .286 with eight home runs and knocking in 47 runs. He was first-team All-Big Ten and second-team All-Region.

the Giants. Sophomore goalie John Schulz was an honorable mention. Lake Forest: Kelan Duff, Wes Janeck and Conor Walters earned first-team all-North Suburban Conference honors. Matthew Cliffford, Bennett Petray and Jack Adams were second-team selections, while Patrick Brandell, Blake Ulmer, Mac Altounian, Cole Johnston and Hunter Moore were honorable mentions for the Scouts (15-4). Waters, who will play at Lafayette, led the team with 141 points (74 goals, 67 assists). Janeck, a Maryland recruit, paced the team with 131 groundballs, while Duff, a freshman, came up with 69 groundballs. The other scoring leaders were Clifford (47 goals, 10 assists), Brandell (33 goals, 23 assists), Moore (24 goals, 14 assists), Johnston (28 goals, 10 assists), Altounian (20 goals, 7 assists) and Mac Montagne (25 goals, 10 assists). Ulmer finished the season with 114 saves. Brandell will play college lacrosse at St. John’s University. Loyola: Six Ramblers — Patrick Flanagan, Kyle Koch, Kevin Corbett, Luca Lazzaretto, Mark Dowdle and Aaron Yasko — claimed first-team all-conference accolades in the Chicago Catholic League. Graham Repp was a second-team pick, while Nolan Smith, Greg Swenson, Declan Harris, Ian Griffin, Patrick Riordan and Thomas Schmitz were honorable mentions. LA finished the season 14-2. New Trier: The state champion Trevians placed six
players on the all-CSL first-team: Ben Connelly, Steen Jorgensen, Tyler Seminetta, Jon Anastos, Jack Hill and Colin Casas. Chris Brower, Danny McDermed and Kevin Mulhern were second-team selections, while Will Rossi was honorable mention. Jorgensen, DePauw-bound, led NT with 88 points (42 goals, 46 assists). Brower, who ended up with 36 goals and 29 assists, will take his game to Colorado College. Connelly, who was sidelined much of the season with an injury, wound up with 24 goals and eight assists. He will play at Tufts next year. The team’s top goal scorer was Casas with 47. The junior middie also had 11 assists. Mulhern, who has been invited to walk on at Bucknell, finished with 21 goals and 18 assists, while Rossi had 53 points (36 goals, 17 assists). Hill led the team in groundballs (104). He finished his career with 233 grounds, which ranks him fifth all-time at NT. The two-time All-American will play next season at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut. Anastos, who ended the season with an impressive save percentage (.70), will play at Lafayette.

The other selections include Keelan Frank (2nd team), Maria Breen (3rd team), Kaleigh Dolan (4th team) and Stephanie Jodloman (6th team). Breen will play college water polo at Villanova, while Jodloman will continue her career at Mercyhurst University.

n a recent morning in Evanston, you can practically see the Celtic Knot Public House yawning. There’s exactly one person at the Irish pub’s ornate bar; his forward-facing baseball cap dipped down towards his drink. Whether he’s whispering a prayer or mumbling a curse, I can’t tell. But his beer conspires there with him in silence. Frances Gillan walks in with the lunch crowd. A co-chair and early originator of the Annual Scottish Festival & Highland Games, now in its 29th year, Gillan orders the sausage roll with ginger ale in a glass with no ice. The Celtic Knot might be an Irish pub, but the motherland’s food is, unfortunately, all the same. “You don’t go to Scotland for the food or the weather,” notes Gillan who was born in Dundee, a city to the north of the legendary St. Andrews golf course, home to this year’s British Open for the 29th time. But underneath the goodnatured, self-deprecating humor, Gillan — a Northbrook resident — has immense pride for the country of her birth. Last year she helped the Celtic Knot fete Robert Burns Day, a celebration of the life and poetry of Scotland’s time-honored national poet. As tradition goes, haggis, a savory pudding containing sheep’s pluck — heart, liver, and lungs — is served for supper.
“You don’t go to Scotland for the food or the weather.” — Frances Gillan Toasts are given, and songs are sung. Gillan made sure the night went through without a hitch. Last weekend she had a similar job, albeit one on a more massive scale. For the fourth consecutive year, the Scottish Festival & Highland Games — the largest of its kind in the Midwest —was celebrated at Hamilton Lakes in Itasca. It is put on each year by the Chicago Scots, the oldest 501(c)3 charity in Illinois (its progenitor is the Illinois Saint Andrew Society of the City of Chicago, established in 1845). Picture strong men flipping 20-foot, 140-pound tree trunks, tossing hammers, stones, bales of hay, and anything to show their manliness . . . in kilts. Bag pipes bellowing over the grounds. An intense rugby sevens game. Furry competitors, tails wagging, evinced by the dogs of Scotland. Highland cattle, Clydesdale horses, a parade of clan tartans, a British car show, whisky tastings, eating competitions, short-
bread competitions (hopefully not in that order), Chicago’s own Scottish fiddler and reigning National Champion Tim MacDonald, a knobbly knee contest (which is exactly what it sounds), and so much more. While all this celebrating is going on, Gillan was in a large tent with her daughter Leslie, managing her own “games” — the Highland Dance competition. Dancers as young as four years old to their early 20s descended in their ghillies from all

over the U.S. to compete in eight different dances: the Highland fling, saw dance, Seann Triubhas (a Gaelic phrase that means “Old Trousers”), sailor’s hornpipe, the reel, the Scottish lilt, Highland laddie, and the Irish jig. Gillan is herself a dancer, trained in Scottish country dancing. “Scottish country dancing is the forerunner to American square dancing,” explains Gillan.
House. There, Gillan teaches the dance that led her to locking eyes with her future husband across a packed dance hall in Scotland. She was 15 when they started dating. Leaving behind a country with about the same land mass as Maine, the two immigrated to the U.S. The youngest of eight siblings, Gillan was homesick. And she never got used to the snow — more snow than she
had ever seen in her life. For a recent birthday, Gillan’s kids bought her a ticket back to Scotland to see the old country. She stayed with her brother-inlaw in Dundee, who asked her what she wanted to do while she was here. “This is probably the last time I’ll be able to come over,” she told him, “so let’s go to the old haunts.” Daniel Street Hall, where Gillan had met her husband, was not only gone — but the street it was on had disappeared as well. As for everything else, well, it was either swallowed up by Dundee University or was changed entirely. She left with a heavy heart. Toward the end of his life, Alec was confined to a wheelchair. Gillan was looking after him alone. One time he fell, and she hurt her back trying to pick him up. Her kids told her she couldn’t do it any more. She was still working, and her doctor echoed those sentiments. Without any alternatives, she admitted him to the Scottish Home, a nursing facility that the Chicago Scots built in 1910. “It’s like a big family [there],” says Gillan. It also happens to be the principal charity of the Scottish Festival & Highland Games. Some years it’s difficult to raise the allotted money, but Gillan takes it in stride. People are very quick to say they are Scottish—citing a grandmother or long deceased relative. But when they are asked to donate, they shirk.
