in a Historical Glen Ellyn home that her parents renovated to its former grace. It was an idyllic spot for making memories at the Morton Arboretum, spending time outdoors, and playing many sports. From a young age she was highly influenced by dad Louis Holland, who owned an institutional investment company and was a regular guest on television, appearing on Wall Street Week and CNBC . This luminous career fostered Liz’s competitive spirit and interest in the investment industry. After college she worked for him, then transitioned to many successful years in insurance, which came with a special bonus—meeting her husband, Van.

This dynamic couple now live in Hinsdale with their two sons, Van III, sometimes known as V3, age 7, and Wolfe, age 4. Liz balances working part time on recruiting and marketing at Van’s investment advisory and risk management firm, Hunken Ewing Financial Group. She is passionate about wellness and holds herself to high standards of living a healthy lifestyle. Mantra? “Always striving to be unordinary and the best version of myself.” On your reading stack? I really like fast paced historical fiction or mystery, but I also read a lot of health and wellness books. I am currently reading Tuning the Human Biofield by Eileen Day McKusick as I am looking into various healing modalities. What organizations do you support? I was Sponsorship Chair this year for Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club. My husband and I also support many organizations around town through attendance and giving. We are also a big supporter of Howard University Business School, my husband’s alma mater. What’s your signature entertaining style? Our entertaining style is varied upon who we are hosting. Mostly I am a stickler about quality ingredients and cultivating an experience for our guests. I also like to challenge myself to keep everything homemade, and I mean everything from the salad dressing to the chimichurri sauce. I love a wholesome salad, paella, steaks etc. Dessert really shines! I like to keep a chocolate souffle, and homemade ice cream in my back pocket as well as a from-scratch caramel apple pie. Three years ago, I came in third in the local Andersonville neighborhood pie making contest for a blueberry, goat cheese, basil, and almond pie. I take pie making very seriously and my recipe is passed down from my grandmother. My husband is also a very great cook and curates the paired wines. What has surprised you about living in this area? How friendly the people are and how there is so much to get involved with as a young family! Any daily rituals that make you feel centered? I love to work out and play racquet sports, including tennis, paddle, and pickleball. I also practice breathwork on my PEMF/Infrared Mat and that relaxes me greatly. I also find cooking while listening to wellness podcasts weirdly relaxing. Music you love? Hip Hop and R&B all day!! Favorite spring traditions? Planting my garden and going to farmers market. I love to be outside with my husband and kids playing sports or just hanging. What advice would you give to your younger self? I would say enjoy the moment more and give yourself some grace! My best mantra since becoming a mom is “Tomorrow is a new day, there is always tomorrow.”

What’s your go-to outfit? My only go-to outfit is my tennis skirt. Other than that—I am usually switching it up depending on my mood. I wear a lot of sporty, preppy, lots of color and pattern. My style icon is Hillary Banks. “What would the modern-day Hillary wear?” I am also into Vintage Jewelry and interesting accessories. Where do they know you by name? Paddle players in my 13s league might know me not by name but as a MENACE. Do you have a favorite memory of living in the area? My favorite memories thus far are of my oldest son playing on the Flag Football Team this past fall. I also really enjoyed the completion of the HJWC Disco Dreams Event which our team worked tirelessly to put on an amazing event and raise money for local charities that support women and children.

Best quick bite or hidden gem? You can find our family at Vistro, Calle Cantina, Altamura or Café La Fortuna. But in the city, I love Tortello, Lost Larson, Giant, Acanto, Miru and an underground supper club called Saint Emeric. We love amazing food! While we love great restaurants I spend a lot of time cooking for my family. Do you have a favorite museum? My favorite museum traditions are going to the Art Institute with my mom who is an artist and the Field Museum with my kids who are really into animals and dinosaurs right now. The Field Museum is a “different” experience when your kids are obsessed with Wild Kratts and Nature Documentaries. What is your favorite movie filmed or set in Chicago? The Break Up was filmed in one of the buildings I lived in Lakeview, so it is definitely one of my favorites!

is a common misconception. While it’s true that weather conditions and seasonal activities can influence daily life or activities, they don’t have a direct correlation with surgical outcomes. Recovery timelines and success rates are primarily determined by medical factors such as the complexity of the procedure, the patient’s overall health, and adherence to post-operative instructions.

Medical Factors Trump the Season: Your body’s ability to heal and recover from surgery is largely influenced by internal

factors rather than what season it may be. Factors such as age, preexisting medical conditions, and immune system play crucial roles in determining the pace and success of recovery. Surgeons consider these factors when assessing a patient’s candidacy for surgery and developing personalized recovery plans.

The old saying, “There is no such thing as bad press” may hold true most of the time, but unfortunately that hasn’t yet proved to be the case with current stories regarding Ketamine. Unfortunately, Ketamine came up in a toxicology report in a recent terrible Hollywood tragedy and many in the media negligently created a false narrative and ran with it. Shocking, right? The “good” part about all of this press is that the dialogue around Ketamine has gone mainstream and those seeking education from reliable sources are at an all-time high.

Ketamine was first studied in the 1960s as a safer alternative to traditional anesthetics and was first used by anesthesiologists in the 1970s. To this day, Ketamine is the most commonly prescribed anesthetic globally and on the World Health Organization Essential Medication List. Ketamine causes minimal respiratory depression and does not impair the cough reflex, which many other drugs do. In 2019, the FDA approved Ketamine for treatment-resistant depression, which has saved countless lives.

Ketamine is to be administered in a relaxing, spa-like environment by a licensed medical professional either by normal IV or nasal injection through a product named Spravato. Individual sessions typically last between 45 and 90 minutes (depending on dos-

ing) with the peak Ketamine experience lasting a couple of hours. A day or two after treatment, while the body is still experiencing the effects of the treatment, it’s best to meet with a psychiatrist to better process the experience which aids in the healing process.

The phrase “I don’t know how she does it” never rings truer than when meeting Angie Rose Randall. This mom of two leads a successful marketing business, Social Chow, has a sizeable online following, is an advocate and fundraiser for those who, like her, are living with multiple sclerosis, and runs her household with precision. She makes it look easy, and has recently debuted a new business to help other busy people get it all together to make the most out of life, just like her. “I shared the idea in a women’s entrepreneurship group and 10 weeks later, I launched The Orderly Life,” Angie says.

Designed to take tasks including home maintenance, meal planning, photo and keepsake organization, and financial preparation from items on a never-ending to-do list to resolved. “I’ve developed organizational systems that save me time, energy, and stress. Now I’m sharing them with others who are in the same boat,” the entrepreneur says.

These systems create time-saving strategies to solve for everyday organizational challenges. A home maintenance binder makes it easy to stay on top of weekly, monthly, and annual services. Angie carefully curated an Emergency Binder that contains critical information and documents, so you’re prepared in both life and death. There’s one for organizing children’s lives, and financial planning and organizing in partnership with Morgan Stanley. She explains, “It’s about relieving stress and feeling in control of your lifestyle. Moms especially need that because it helps you improve the overall flow of your home.” The binders make a memorable gift, both useful and helpful. Each is customizable. The first Organize Your Life in-person workshops have been sell-outs, filled with women who found easy camaraderie in their

shared commitment to streamlining their days and achieving more each day. Angie tells us, “All the women were strangers at the beginning of the day but found so much in common. We all stepped away feeling the power of conversation and connectedness,” adding, “There’s power in being in the room together.”

The multi-hour workshop follows a structured agenda with flexibility to spend more or less time on a topic depending on the needs of the group. From storing digital photos and creating photo books to the importance of wrapping up each month with a financial report, there’s a lot of actionable information along with new connections.

Angie says, “It’s not necessarily ‘the’ way but it’s ‘a way’”.

It might feel daunting to take an entire day away from one’s life, but the rewards are obvious for those who do. Guests leave feeling optimistic and better equipped to stay organized and get it all done, eliminating the stress of unfinished business, and replacing it with the peace that comes from knowing everything is in its place and all the appointments are made. Long-term, attendees appreciate the financial planning tools.

The business is already a hit on social media, with @theorderlylife Instagram growing rapidly. Angie is planning for a private Facebook group where participants can connect, and she is hoping to put some follow-up girl’s nights on the calendar.

With her home and business lives well-organized, Angie will take time at the club pool this summer with your husband, daughter, and son. She’ll also travel to Italy to celebrate her mother’s birthday.

By bringing 187 years of history-making moments to life, the team has rethought the jewelry store shopping experience. Inspired by lenticular cloud formations, the one-of-a-kind modern structure incorporates a serpentine glass facade that gives way to ample sun-drenched interiors featuring organic forms, custom furnishings, and an environment like no other.

Holtzman describes the approach by saying, “We wanted to be completely experiential by doing what’s not expected with sound, sight, and taste. This isn’t a typical jewelry store experience.”

An array of private and semi-private rooms with intimate seating areas welcome clients, including a Bridesmaid Room and Proposal Room.

Beyond design is the spirit of hospitality. A full-service, circular bar provides a comfortable haven to take in the vibes. “The beverage menu features cocktails that pay homage to our history, such as Elijah’s Old Fashioned, or are gem-inspired, such as our Emerald Mojito. Hinsdale resident and attorney Michael Martin has a busy professional life as a partner in a law firm in Joliet, but his role at home as a dad to two active girls remains equally important.

Michael Martin grew up in Naperville and attended Benet Academy before getting his undergrad at DePauw University and having a brief career as a computer scientist. Then he attended law school at Chicago Kent-College of Law, and ten years ago, he and his Ohio-native wife moved to Hinsdale where they love living and raising their two girls.

It was the closeness of the community that caused him to move his family to Hinsdale, having grown up in the region and attending Benet. He already had a lot of friends in the area, and once they moved, they made more. The school district and other opportunities for his children didn’t hurt.

“I think I’ve fully embraced being the girl dad...”

Martin focuses his practice on litigation but also contracts and land acquisition, particularly for the Illinois Department of Transportation. He’s also sat on the District 181 School Board for four years and has been President for the last two, though his term is coming to an end.

“I have a certificate in Intellectual Property Law because of my computer background. I did a clerkship and found it extremely boring.” Martin says. “So, I kind of pivoted and went to work with my dad out of law school instead of some other opportunities.”

Martin has two daughters, Emerson, a sixth grader at Clarendon Hills Middle School and Leighton, a fourth grader at Monroe Elementary School in Hinsdale. Fatherhood suits him.

“It’s been great, obviously, but being the only male presents its challenges,” Martin says. “I think I’ve fully embraced being the girl dad, I guess learning to enjoy taking my girls [and I] to get mani-pedis.”

Both of his daughters are into cheer, and Martin says he had a considerable learning curve about the stunts. He played basketball and golf growing up, and the kids don’t really like the sports he likes. Though, he doesn’t mind all that much.

“Staying with our kids is our favorite moment of the day. We’re big on trying to plan excursions down to the city,” he says. “We want to make sure we get down there and enjoy all the benefits the city offers. My sixth grader would say we probably hang out too much.”

Martin says people often ask him if he wants to try for a boy, but he and his wife always knew they would stop at two. There’s plenty to keep him busy.

“Emerson is the social butterfly. She’s friends with kids all over town, at all different schools,” he says. “She thinks her life revolves me being her Uber driver taking her to places. She’s trying Lacrosse for the first time and playing volleyball because her mom played it.”

While Emerson has the dominant personality, Martin says the younger daughter, Leighton, is the quiet one. Leighton only does cheer and tumbling but is on a travel cheer team now, which takes up a lot of time but at heart she’s a homebody.

“She likes to hang around at home and hang out with us. She’d much rather lay around at home than make plans,” says Martin. “Emerson has something scheduled every minute of every day with some friend somewhere.”

When his two girls were younger Martin coached both of their soccer and basketball teams, but like most kids they’ve gravitated to other activities that have grabbed their interest.

“I always joke I ran for the school board so I could quit coaching. Emerson has dabbled in softball and quite to play lacrosse,” he says. “I said, ‘We don’t care as long as you’re doing something’. I kind of believe in letting them try whatever they want. They’ll find something.”

At the family owned Five 0 Four Kitchen in Glen Ellyn, chef

Cristian Orozco isn’t just cooking drop-dead gorgeous fusion fare, he’s infusing his own life story into a menu that delights and inspires.

Chef Cristian Orozco is walking toward our table, cradling an edible relic from his childhood with both hands. He’s placed his special dessert in a small wooden box and is trying to make sure it remains perfectly level. His eyes are ricocheting up and down—dish to floor, floor to dish—as he navigates the narrow walkway that cuts through center of his restaurant: Five 0 Four Kitchen in Glen Ellyn.

He’s lined the box with polished white rocks and topped the jagged canvas of shiny stones with a pinwheel-shaped buñuelo, Latin America’s answer to the beignet.

I’ve seen Fabergé eggs less ornately decorated than this dessert. Orozco has traced every curve of the pastry with a thin band of white coconut puree. Small green orbs of mint and strawberry gel fill small dimples in the fried dough, which is also wreathed with a

miniature bouquet of edible flowers.

Microgreens sprout up from crevices in the rocks. Crimson hibiscus petals have been tweezered onto the dough for an extra pop of color. And the buñuelo has been showered with edible confetti, which we later learn are dried marigolds that Orozco has plucked, dehydrated and grinded down into sunshine-colored dust.

By this point in our meal, Orozco has already achieved a semimiraculous feat. I am wary, by nature, of fusion menus. My fusion phobia is due in large part to eating one too many servings of neongreen wasabi mashed potatoes during the late 1990s. But over the course of a single Sunday evening at Five 0 Four, Orozco has lovingly laid siege to every possible defense I could muster.

I happily raised the white flag two dishes into our meal, admiring the sheer moxie of a menu that A) Stuffed Italian ravioli with huitlacoche (the mushroom-like black corn that’s a delicacy in

Mexico). B) Placed Spanish-style croquettes atop a spiral of red sauce that looks like a marina but tastes like pureed chipotle and guajillo peppers. And C) served mini taquitos stuffed with a Wagyu beef tartare.

But let’s go back to that beautiful buñuelo, shall we? When Orozco presents it, he says the dish is a sweet memory. Raised in Pajapita, in Northwest Guatemala along the Pacific Coast, Orozco learned to respect the region’s rich seafood offerings at an early age. (Make sure to try his Guatemalan-style octopus tostada for proof that he brought that love with him to Glen Ellyn.)

But Orozco, like any adventurous young boy, would often beg his mother to make the short trek over the border into Mexico, so he could feast on his definition of the ultimate Happy Meal: a plate of fresh-made tacos and a cold glass of horchata.

“I am very proud to be Guatemalan,” Orozco tell us, “But I think I’ve always kept a little part of Mexico in my heart, too.”

Thus, his bejeweled buñuelo pays homage to both cultures. It tastes like a churro, but the pinata-like blast of color is pure Guatemala. We eat. Orozco listens as we described beloved desserts from our own childhoods. And he smiles broadly, as he walks back to his kitchen. Mission accomplished Orozco has come a long way from this first kitchen job, cleaning soup bowls at Pho 777 in Chicago’s Uptown

neighborhood. But he still looks back, somewhat nostalgically, at his suds and dishwasher days—as Vietnam’s steamy soups lit a fire in him to explore different cuisines.

He’ll never forget the moment, for instance, when a friend informed him that there was a magical book called The Michelin Guide, which listed, one after the other, the very best restaurants in the world.

Orozco rushed out, bought a copy, and flipped through every page. He was shocked to discover that Acadia, Chef Ryan McCaskey’s ode to Maine and coastal New England cooking, that he was working mere blocks away from the Michelin-starred restaurant.

When Orozco showed up at Acadia’s doorstep, he told McCaskey he was willing to toil away, night and day, for a chance to apprentice in his kitchen. McCaskey gave him a trial run, took note of the kid’s passion, and hired him the next day.

Cocktails

Chef Cristian Orozco has begun to plan and schedule wine dinners to show how his globe-trotting creations can marry beautifully with vinos from across the world. In the meantime, don’t leave without sampling his wonderful cocktail list.

Guava Mezcal: If you’re hewing toward the Latin American side of Five 0 Fours menu, this delightfully fruit-forward cocktail begins with a margarita base and then pumps up the tropical notes with guava puree, agave nectar and muddled strawberries.

Breeze With a Lemon: Have a secret soft spot for creamy cocktails? This is your drink, which blends gin with all the scents and flavors of coastal Greece—floral notes, lemon juice, lavender—and then thickens it with yogurt and egg whites. It’s limoncello on steroids.

While at Acadia, Orozco absorbed many of his mentor’s philosophies, especially his obsession over sourcing pristine ingredients. From that point on, every stop along Orozco’s journey to Five 0 Four seemed to stoke a new passion in him.

He fell in love with Italian cooking after a stint an Italian restaurant. He learned how to view Mexican cuisine through a more modern lens while working with Carlos Gaytán at Tzuco in Chicago. A stint at North Pond in Lincoln Park followed, as well as an important stop at The Frida Room, where his pop-up tasting menus encouraged him to ask a dangerous question: Would it be possible for me to own and operate my own restaurant one day?

Orozco likes to say that Five 0 Four kitchen found him, not the other way around. Asked to help inject some new life into the restaurant’s menu as a consultant, Orozco commuted two hours every day from Chicago to Glen Ellyn. Once again, his passion bled clean through his chef’s coat, so much so that the owners of the restaurant offered him an opportunity to buy them out.

In early 2024, Orozco shook on it. The restaurant was his. His family moved out with him, having never spent so much as a full day in Glen Ellyn before. Their sacrifice, Orozco says, is the gift he savors most. At long last, with his wife, Sara Iscobar, running the tables and his daughter nearby, he’ll be able to spend more time with his family as he pursues his culinary passions.

Orozco’s menus change often, switching with the turn of each season and often within seasons. Thus, every visit is a different autobiography, a different interpretation of his story.

On our visit, he paired a silky piece of salmon with a medley of pickled vegetables—green apples, carrots, and chayote—which Orozco says is a staple of Guatemalan cooking. The oily fish and his mild “giardiniera” complement each other spectacularly, as did his accompanying saffron sauce: a homemade fumet thickened with butter and cream.

For further evidence of Orozco’s skill as a saucier, try his take on a Peruvian tiradito, slices of bluefin tuna sprinkled with pistachio dust and then moisturized with a leche de tigre that’s more sweet than spicy thanks to its infusion of passion fruit.

“I want to pay reverence,” Cristian says, “to as many different cuisines as I can.” There’s plenty of evidence of that fact on his current menu. Take Italy, for example: His Brussel sprout crostini isn’t your typical collection of small Melba-toast rounds. His crostini are torpedo-like in shape. Picture a thin savory éclair. The base layer is fresh baked focaccia that’s dressed up like a bowl of pasta primavera. It’s topped with hazelnut-studded burrata. A drizzle of pesto. The aforementioned sprouts. And a blend of honey and balsamic that could double as a stellar base for your next agrodolce.

“I never thought I’d be here,” says Orozco. “But the moment I came here I just felt something. It felt special.” Suffice to say, on a recent Sunday night, we felt the very same thing—something unique and special indeed.

Spirits and expectations were high for the sold-out Kitchen Walk Luncheon. The Hinsdale Historical Society Women’s Board pulled out all the stops with top interior designers and authors Mark D. Sikes and Paloma Contreras, plus Frederik magazine editor Hudson Moore as honored guests and speakers. Hinsdale Golf Club looked like a page from Mark’s book Blue and While Done Right, with each table set with blue accents and gorgeous hydrangeas. The guests were even more beautiful, with many paying homage to the theme with every shade of blue in the crowd. Ong and Nawas benefit from the longstanding relationship AdventHealth has established with the community, while the connection to UChicago Medicine provides patients with direct access to one of the top medical research universities in the country.

UChicago Medicine has provided high-quality health care to patients in the Chicago region for decades. However, until UChicago Medicine’s joint venture with AdventHealth, patients living in the Western Suburbs had to drive to either the University of Chicago campus on the South Side of Chicago or one of its facilities or clinics in the city or Orland Park to get advanced, specialized care.

“Historically, the University of Chicago Medicine has provided great care to patients, especially for patients on the South Side,” Dr. Ong, a surgical oncologist, says. “We’ve also established UChicago Medicine as an academic leader in oncologic care through clinical trials that push the boundaries of the delivery of clinical care directly to patients with complex disease.”

The research component of UChicago Medicine is foundational to the world-class care the academic health system provides. It may be developing new drugs that can be the next big difference for a cancer patient’s journey. But Dr. Ong recognizes there are certain limitations when care is concentrated to certain physical spaces.

“Our aim is to provide high quality care to patients regardless of what socio-economic walk of life or geographic area they come from,” Dr. Ong says. “The AdventHealth system has already been very well established within the Western Suburbs as a leader in clinical care and a center that is very highly regarded amongst

our patients, and we’re very lucky to be able to partner with this institution that has a community presence and community trust.” She aims to bring her expertise in the surgical management of a wide variety of abdominal and soft tissue malignancies to this community.

In addition to providing research-based treatments, Dr. Nawas says another, related advantage of the partnership is that UChicago Medicine doctors can provide very specialized care in medical fields such as oncology.

“AdventHealth already has a great group of oncologists, but what we can offer is deeper expertise in specific areas,” Dr. Nawas says. “What I am bringing to Hinsdale is an expertise in myeloid diseases, which are a type of blood cancers or hematologic malignancies.”

The hope, she says, is that kind of specialization can be built on and expanded.

“Basically, it’s a kind of augmented care for patients that are already being treated in Hinsdale, bringing in additional consultation or a second opinion,” she says. “It’s a really high level of expertise that we can offer patients that they would normally have to travel into the city or even sometimes out of state to get.”

And it’s not just patients who can benefit from the expertise of UChicago Medicine’s doctors. It’s other oncologists and doctors as well.

“We are constantly gaining a better understanding of how to apply treatments and for whom they might or might not work,” Dr. Nawas says. “That experience is rapidly developing, and unless you have the luxury of focusing on one specific area, it’s very hard to stay completely up to date. The idea is that we help our colleagues offer the most modern understanding of the disease and the most modern therapies.”
