CHEERS TO 50 YEARS As the Shlifka Family celebrates 50 years of owning and operating Kiddles Sports in downtown Lake Forest, it marks the milestone by thanking customers for the memories

Glencoe’s virtual map enlightens and educates BY JULIE KEMP PICK THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

The online Historic Glencoe Story-Map has a short history. It first appeared on the village’s website in 2017. But the story-map features bits of interesting information about Glencoe homes — those designated either “landmark properties” or “historically significant properties” — that go way back for residents, realtors, history buffs and others. Glencoe was incorporated in 1869. One of the village’s landmark homes, located at 599 Greenleaf Avenue, was constructed in 1869 in Italianate style and altered to Classic Revival in 1902, the story-map reveals. Original owner Dr. Samuel Bartlett was the first minister of Glencoe Congregational Church (now Glencoe Union Church) and later served as Dartmouth College president from 1877-1892. It was just a typical late-summer, sunny day at Lake Forest’s Kiddles Sports, with families coming and going and stocking up on back-to-school team uniforms and sporting goods. Until Lake Forest High School alumnus

and Hollywood megastar Vince Vaughn walked in to buy bicycles for his children while they were visiting town. But as typical of the customer service delivered at Kiddles, Aric Shlifka didn’t want to sell bikes that Vaughn’s children weren’t ready to ride. “I went and pulled some bikes from the garage that looked to be about the right size for Vince’s kids to learn how to ride,” Aric

explains. “I let him borrow them until he was sure what they wanted. “I’m looking forward to him letting us know how the riding lessons went.” You don’t have to be in the movies to receive this kind of star treatment from the Shlifka Family — Jay and Denise and their sons Aric Continued on PG 10
