A Day to Remember MCKINLOCK POST 264 OF THE AMERICAN LEGION INVITES THE COMMUNITY TO HELP CELEBRATE ITS CENTENNIAL. BY DAVID RUTTER THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
The heartfelt power of symbolism centers on shared special moments—the salute of old soldiers, the chords of a song, and the summoned memories of heroism. As Lake Forest’s McKinlock Post 264 of the American Legion observes its 100th year of supporting veterans and our local community, it wants to make sure everyone remembers the powerful shared moment of Memorial Day and its ongoing efforts to preserve the stories of veterans and those lost to war. Post 264’s leaders are asking the community to join them Friday, May 24, and Saturday, May 25, to share in placing tiny American flags at the front of each veteran’s headstone at the four local cemeteries the post tends on Memorial Day. Volunteers are sought for Fort Sheridan Cemetery (Vaetner Road) on Friday at 4 p.m. and at the Lake Forest Cemetery (1525 N. Lake Road), St. Mary’s Cemetery (just west of Continued on PG 10

Supporters of Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods always love hearing who the next recipient will be for the nonprofit’s annual Distinguished Environmental Leadership Award. Last year, actor Robert Redford and Sibylle Szaggars Redford were honored at the Smith Nature Symposium and Benefit for their lifelong commitment to land preservation and climate change. This year’s award goes to another husband and wife team of forwardthinking environmental activists. Physicist Amory Lovins and landscape photographer Judy Hill Lovins of Snowmass, Colorado will be presented with the honor at Brushwood’s 36th annual Smith Nature Symposium and Benefit on June 1. Introducing the award this year will be Bill Kurtis and Donna La Pietra, also the evening’s masters of ceremonies. During dinner, they will join the recipients on stage for a discussion of photography, climate change, and the future of energy. A.
