Kevin Joseph Smith Burke’s life ended tragically at the age of 23 in the summer of 2017, but the Wilmette native’s memory lives on through a local blood drive held in his honor. Scheduled for February 23, from 8 a.m.-2 p.m., at the St. Joseph Catholic Church Community Room—1747 Lake Avenue, in Wilmette—organizers of the event hope to eclipse last year’s collection of 140 units of blood. St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, also in Wilmette, serves as a co-sponsor of the drive. Kevin, born in 1993, was the second of Kevin and Kathryn Burke’s five children. He was in St. Joseph Preschool’s inaugural class, before attending St. Francis Xavier School from kindergarten through eighth grade. He graduated from New Trier High School, where he was on the football, swimming, and rowing teams. A strong athlete who competed in area regattas, half marathons, stair climbing races, and triathlons, Kevin enrolled at the University of Illinois in Champaign and, after traveling in South Africa during a gap year, attended Loyola University. Boys Hope Girls Hope of Illinois continues to buoy children-in-need BY BILL MCLEAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Boys Hope Girls Hope (BHGH) of Illinois Chairman Jamie Baisley stood in a back yard in Evanston not too long ago, observing sheer joy emanating from teenagers and their proud parents. Along with a happy teardrop or two. The scene unfolded at a BHGH graduation party. “Many of the students—scholars, we call them—start as timid, immature freshmen in our program,” says the 44-year-old Baisley, who grew up in Glencoe and graduated from Loyola Academy (Class of ’92) in Wilmette. “But they’re often completely different people as seniors; they’re confident, outgoing, much more mature, excited about the future. “The parents of the scholars,” he adds, “get emotional at a gathering like that. Their expressions say, ‘Wow, this works.’ ” This — or BHGH — helps academically capable and motivated children-in-need to meet their full potential and become men and women for others by providing valuecentered, family-like homes, opportunities, and education through college. Jesuit priest Fr. Paul G. Sheridan founded the organization in 1977 with a noble-spirited goal in mind: to help children break the cycle of poverty. BGBH is a privately funded, multi-denominational nonprofit today, operating in 16 U.S. cities and in Guatemala, Brazil, Mexico, and Peru. Children generally enter the program between the ages of 12 and 14, reside in nurturing living quarters, and attend first-rate elementary and Continued on PG 8

Some 40 scholars are transforming their lives under the guidance of BGBH of Illinois leaders and volunteers in the 2018-19 academic year. “Our approach is a holistic one,” says Baisley, who served as a BHGH of Illinois board member for 10 years and fulfilled executive committee duties before becoming chairman. “Our scholars are athletes and interested in sciences and the arts and other subjects, and we’re arranging internships and job interviews for them, as well as walking them through the college-application process. We’re also helping them develop life skills. Our organization’s life mentors continue to have a tremendous influence on them. “Meeting the needs of the whole person—that’s what Boys Hope Girls Hope is all about,” adds the West Loop resident and founder/managing

who has four sisters and two brothers and whose parents, Jim and Barbara, live in Wilmette. “After I first got into the recruiting field [in 2004], I became interested in getting involved in philanthropy.” Baisley offered his time and energy for a Boys & Girls Club before joining the BHGH of Illinois board. Eight years ago he was president of the Loyola Academy Junior Board. Among his many other contributions as a philanthropist was a stint as a committee member for Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital Champions for Children’s. A safety on Loyola Academy football teams, Baisley played middle linebacker and majored in business at Indiana University, suited up as a captain for the IU Hoosiers and played professionally in the NFL, NFL Europe and XFL leagues. He won a pair of World Bowl championship rings (1998, 2000) with the Dusseldorf, Germany-based Rhein Fire of NFL Europe.

Two of the men who had the most influence on Baisley at Loyola Academy were John O’Loughlin and the late John Hoerster (head varsity football coach). O’Loughlin taught history and was Baisley’s sophomore basketball coach. Baisley, a small forward and co-captain, hit jumpers and rebounded and hustled for O’Loughlin’s squad in the winter of 1989-90. “Coach O was quiet, and you never wanted to let him down, just like you’d never want to let your father down,” Baisley says. “He was wellrespected by all, a man who instilled important values in me—values like hard work, determination. Orleans Collection, a massive research center devoted to the history of that city and the Gulf South. The 100,000-item museum digs deep into the role of enslavement in the Big Easy’s heartache and history. New Orleans was the corporate center of America’s slave trade. As for modern Illinois, that is not “somebody else’s history.” And that is why Skokie’s museum has decided to widen its educational mandate, especially for student visitors. its international slave trade. But from that date through the end of the Civil War in 1865, domestic slave merchandising continued unabated from state to state; historians estimate slavery displaced nearly 2 million people during the time span. The issue is particularly relevant to Illinois. Historians widely regard Illinois as the most proslavery of the Midwest states. The Great Emancipator, Abraham Lincoln, was never a resident of a free Illinois. Four Illinois governors were slave holders. For 50 years after international slave trading was banned,

the state protected slave “ownership” with sanctioned, vigilant violence and legal manipulation. Slavery thrived in the open. Abolitionist activists were killed, mobs took revenge, and those who aided the Underground Railroad slaves to freedom in Canada risked being lynched. “For a northern state, however, Illinois might have had the worst slavery record,” author and historian Tara McClellan McAndrew reported for National Public Radio. “The state was the only one in the upper Mississippi Valley, which [also] included Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, whose Constitution allowed slavery and indentured servitude.” Illinois adopted “black codes” and perpetual indentured servitude. Those laws, McAndrew says, prevented blacks from being unaccompanied in Illinois for more than 10 days, or else they could be arrested, fined repeatedly, and auctioned. “Slaves” or “servants” had to have written permission to travel more than 10 miles from their master’s homestead, or risk a whipping. Blacks couldn’t gather in groups of three or more to dance or make “revelry,” or they could be lashed. In short, Illinois’ record of supporting Lincoln’s call to arms against the South was exemplary. But there is little documentation that Illinoisans widely backed civil liberties for freed slaves. A discussion by experts examining the historical impact of domestic slave trade highlighted the exhibit’s opening day. The participants were Erin Greenwald, curator of “Purchased Lives”; Nancy Bercaw, chair, division of political history, National Museum of American History; and Dr. Christopher Reed, professor emeritus of history, Roosevelt University, and general secretary, Black Chicago History Forum. Kristin Fisch reeled in three automatic state berths with her considerable talent at the Stevenson girls gymnastics sectional on February 6. She earned a silver medal in the all-around (36.9), tied for third place on floor exercise (9.2) and tied for fourth on the balance beam (9.2) at the highly competitive meet. Late last month Fisch captured gold in the all-around (36.825) and in three events at the Mundelein Regional.

The year 1979 will be on the minds of Highland Park High School’s boys swimming and diving team members at this weekend’s sectional in the home water. That was when a Giants boys crew last won a sectional championship. “It should be fun and exciting, competing at our place with a good chance to win a big meet,” HPHS coach Tim Sirois said last weekend, adding other contending schools in the 15-team field

include Mundelein, Warren Township and Deerfield high schools. The year 1968 surfaced at the Central Suburban League North Meet at Vernon Hills High School on February 9. Giants senior Andrew Vorobev supplanted the meet mark in the 100-yard butterfly—a record (52.5) that had stood for 51 years. You remember ’68, among the most tumultuous years in U.S. history. But the year ended on a feel-good note, three NASA astronauts becoming the first humans to orbit the moon. Vorobev clocked a 52.03 in the 100 fly last weekend. “My dad [50-year-old Vlad],” a smiling Vorobev noted, “is almost as old [as the life of the previous record in the event].” Winning never gets old. Highland Park’s other victor at the CSL North Meet was junior Tobe Obochi, who sped to a 21.86 in the 50 freestyle, a time in the neighborhood of his personal-best 21.79. But he, like Vorobev, wasn’t fully tapered for the six-team gathering. A league or conference meet in swimming is unique. Each season many competitors on each team enter fully tapered since the meet is their last meet. The league or conference meet is essentially their “state meet”. The top racers on each team, meanwhile, usually arrive exhausted, partially rested, with their sights set on peaking at either a sectional meet or the state meet. Vorobev lifted weights last week. Hard. He didn’t take it easy in the pool, either. His taper?

Notable: Three former Giants entrants owned CSL North Meet records before last weekend’s division meet at VHHS. Two of the marks fell, but Levy Nathan’s 1:40.91 in the 200 free (set in 2016) remained intact. Glenbrook North’s 200 medley relay, with a time of 1:36.59, bettered HP’s 1:36.77, established in ’16, and Glenbrook North’s Ryan Purdy won the 100 back in 50.88 to take down Ben Laedlein’s 53.16, achieved five years ago. … Obochi, on his brother, eighth-grader Kevin: “He thinks he’s better at video games than I am. He’s quieter than I am. As for swimming, he’s good, very good. His times in high school will be faster than mine.”

“About 10 percent,” he said last weekend. That record he set in the fly was actually slower than his seed time—and school-record time—of 51.43. Look for that time to drop this weekend (February 16) at the sectional meet and then drop some more at the state meet (February 22-23, at New Trier HS). Sirois’ club totaled 339 points last weekend, finishing runner-up to Glenbrook North (424) and well ahead of third-place Deerfield (266). Vorobev and Obochi each motored to a runner-up showing, with Vorobev going 52.83 in the 100 backstroke and Obochi touching in 1:00.87 in the 100 breaststroke. The pair joined Richard Heller and Alex Gordon to claim runner-up honors in the 200 medley relay (1:38.32) and collaborated with Bora Hopali and Konrad Schmid for the silver in the 400 free relay (3:17.87). “Coach Sirois tells us to daydream about swimming, about our races … to imagine how we’d execute during a race,” the Northwestern University-bound Schmid said after a dual with visiting

New Trier on February 1, when his personal-best time of 2:02.37 topped the 200 IM field in a 107-79 loss. Forgive the swimmers if you happen to catch them sporting faraway looks and bumping unintentionally into lockers inside HPHS. “If they’re daydreaming at school,” Sirois said, “it’s best that it’s about swimming, right?” Reality for Sirois was his 200 free relay’s electric time of 1:28.72, a program record set against NT’s Trevians earlier this month. Obochi, Ryan Tran, Gordon and Vorobev served as the unit’s legs. The 6-foot-2, 160-pound-ish Obochi will compete in all three relays at this weekend’s sectional. Each of the Giants’ other two quartets (200 medley, 400 free) has a realistic shot at lowering a school record before the end of the month. “Seeing our relays come together like they have has been good to see,” Obochi said. “All of us have that relay-team mentality you have to have. I like that it’s not all on me; all the guys are there to

Popp’s TV ads crackle with humor BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

Matthew Broderick was ailing. The actor who portrayed the titular character in the 1986 movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was in no shape to perform in a scene, set in Northbrook, that required running—all-out sprinting, in some sequences— across sidewalks and streets and yards and through a neighbor’s house. A search for a body double began. It ended with the choice of a 20-something Greg Popp, a Glenbrook North High School graduate and a member of the movie’s location management team. Popp had scouted houses for scenes. Popp found that neighbor’s house through which Ferris dashed in The Race Home scene. Popp and Broderick were the same height and same age. Each had brown hair. But they did not have the same hair length. “They had to cut my hair,” Popp, now 57 and a Glencoe resident since the early 1990s, recalls in the Starbucks in his hometown on an Antarctic morning, maybe colder. “I put on duplicate clothes for the scene, and when I came out of the trailer, Matthew, dressed in the same clothes I was

wearing, saw me and did a double-take. But I never got to do the scene; Matthew later felt better and did all that running.” Poor Popp, all dressed up, and shorn, with no place to go. There’s no business like show business. Broderick presented a bottle of Dom Pérignon to Popp after filming and signed the label, “To Greg. All the best. Matthew Broderick, aka Ferris Bueller.” Popp drank the champagne and threw out the bottle, label included. “Should have kept it,” says a smiling, headshaking Popp, his mane long again. “I had no idea the movie would turn out to be as successful as it was.” Popp’s career to date, as a filmmaker who specializes in directing comedy-dialogue commercials? Successful. Highly successful. He has worked with Peyton Manning, Roger Federer, Serena and Venus Williams, Joe Montana, Joe Buck, Owen Wilson and Danica Patrick, among many others who have signed an autograph or 200,000. Joan Rivers and Jay Leno, too. During his 19-year, award-laden career at the advertising agency DDB Chicago, beginning in 1986, Popp worked his way up to

senior vice president/executive producer, helping in the creation of clever and memorable television ads for Anheuser-Busch and Frito-Lay and countless other big-time companies. Remember the Clydesdale kicking the football between the telephone poles in the Budweiser commercial? Of course you do. Remember Manning, in any Papa John’s Pizza ad, making you laugh and think, Now there’s an athlete with serious acting chops? “Peyton,” Popp says, “is a no-nonsense, very smart man, with a complete understanding of acting and with a sense of humor that’s as dry as you’re ever going to hear. He always asks about the subtext of his role, of his lines, in each commercial. I’ve always enjoyed working with him. I like to meet privately with celebrities and athletes in a trailer or a dressing room and get to know them, laugh a little with them, before they first appear on set. Gain trust. Trust is big. I’m big on making sure they have that. “I typically perform the role they have to perform in front of them, usually poorly. That puts them at ease.” Popp met his future wife, Cathy, in a classroom at Northwestern University. It was an advertising class, assigned seating, Cathy, a junior, sitting right in front of Greg, a senior. “At that time I had no interest in advertising for a career,” says Popp, who received a Student Academy Award for his narrative-length film The Lottery Rose while earning a film degree at NU. Greg and Cathy dined at Gino’s East in Chicago on their first date. He discovered Cathy to be honest, devoted, highly intelligent, principled. Instant attraction. His classmate for a semester became his mate for life. “I had an opportunity, after graduation, to head out to Los Angeles and work in the film industry,” Popp says in between bites of a blueberry muffin. “That [Student Academy Award] certainly helped. All I had to do was sign. But I stayed in the Chicago area because I didn’t want to risk losing Cathy. I became a waiter at a Bennigan’s. “I was a terrible waiter, the worst waiter.” Popp then called the Illinois Film Office in Chicago and connected with Billy Higgins, a film location manager. Popp landed work as a location scout/production assistant for the 1986 coming-of-age flick Lucas, directed by David Seltzer and starring Corey Haim, Winona Rider and Charlie Sheen. Rain delayed a scheduled scene one night, forcing Popp to sit and wait in a 1984 blue Camaro with Sheen and Seltzer’s guitar-toting son, who let Popp strum a song in the vehicle. Popp—a drummer in the Glenbrook North marching band that performed at the 1979 Cotton Bowl Classic between a Montana-led Notre Dame squad

and the University of Houston—played Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love”. Sheen, a football player named Cappie in the film, dug the impromptu entertainment from his shotgun seat. A Christmas party was the setting for Popp’s introduction to a DDB Chicago copywriter. That led to a job interview at the agency, followed by the start of a stable career. Greg and Cathy have two sons, Zach, 25, and Zane, 22. From 2005-2018, Popp, based in Glencoe, directed commercials for L.A.-based Supply & Demand. He co-produced and directed the 2014 short Last Shot, a dramatic thriller and a finalist at the Oscar-qualifying USA Film Festival. Last year Superlounge, also based in L.A., hired Popp to direct commercials. He holds that position today. Misericordia used film to help people understand its mission. So did Highwood-based Midwest Young Artists Conservatory. Popp lent his talents to both projects. His wife has served in a leadership role for Misericordia’s Women’s Auxiliary for 15 years. “Professionally I get hired to direct a commercial at a high level,” Popp says. “I’m a hired gun; you can call me that. My forte is to finish the ad on time and within budget. You do that and everybody’s happy, guaranteed. I find the process of creating something to be rewarding, highly satisfying, along with collaborating with people you don’t know and then quickly developing camaraderie. Camaraderie, I’m telling you, helps the process move along, makes the ad stronger, more effective.” Greg Popp has no intention to move. Anywhere. The former North Shore teen loves life as a North Shore adult (with the boundless energy, still, of a teen, of an adventurous … Ferris Bueller). “I didn’t flee to L.A.,” Popp says proudly. “I stuck around, right here in the Midwest. I’m glad I did. It’s still nice to direct famous athletes and celebrities in Miami, in Atlanta, in Denver, in Mexico City. Want to hear something fun? We shot the Wilson commercials featuring Serena and Venus Williams in Miami, around the time we did the Federer ad. I met with each sister, separately. Both are so competitive— and not just in tennis. Each asked me, with the other nowhere near us, ‘What’s my sister’s script like?’ ” I want to hear more anecdotes like that.
