Bill O’Donnell’s heaven on earth is a cozy porch seat at his Blue Ash Farm cabin in Argyle, Wisconsin. It’s where the former longtime Chicago Mercantile Exchange commodities trader likes to sip coffee early in the morning, view nature, and hear its inhabitants produce their soothing choruses. “That,” the 56-year-old and father of four says, “never gets old.” What’s new with “Billy O,” who grew up in Winnetka with six siblings, including brother and NCIS: Los Angeles actor Chris O’Donnell, and gardened his thumbs into a dark forest-green hue during his Loyola Academy (Class of ’82) years? The farm’s intimate Tasting Room, that’s what. It is scheduled to open soon and offer his six products: a smooth, ultra-premium vodka; an all-natural cherry vodka made with real Wisconsin cherries; a flavorful gin infused with 16 botanicals; and three four-year aged bourbons. O’Donnell’s Blue Ash Spirits is a unique craft distillery. Its Maple Bourbon—steeped with maple tapped from trees on the farm in the picturesque Pecatonica River Valley— continues to draw raves from consumers and, unofficially, makes folks hanker for stacks of pancakes. A beekeeper as well, his Honey Bourbon, infused with the honey right from O’Donnell’s beehives, has an addictive sweet

heat that keeps you wanting more. “I got to a point in my life where I thought, ‘How can I turn Blue Ash Farm into a business?’” says O’Donnell, who bought a CME seat in 1986 and traded for 30-plus years in windowless environs before retiring from the hectic days in the pit. “I’m a nature boy, big on the outdoors, and the field of spirits has become another passion of mine. I’m trying to grow this thing. I’m getting good feedback on the flavor profiles. You know what they say: ‘Do what you love.’ Well, I’m doing that each day.” Bill and his wife, elementary schoolteacher Amy, purchased the 35 acres of land in the southwest corner of the Badger State nearly 20 years ago. Three years later he built a cozy cabin on site with his own hands, even though he’s not a trained carpenter. He also restored the farm’s different habitats—prairies, wetlands, and woodlands. The invitees to his otherworldly Labor Day weekend gatherings include friends he made in grade school. Among his many dreams is hearing his future grandchildren yelp, “Look, Grandpa Bill planted those trees!” The escape is a two-hour, five-minute drive from the O’Donnell abode in Illinois. “When I was working as a trader, I couldn’t wait for most Fridays, knowing I’d get to spend the weekend at the farm,” recalls O’Donnell, whose grandparents owned the original Blue Ash Farm (known mostly for tobacco and thoroughbreds) near Cynthiana, Kentucky. “I’d whip up there to canoe, to hunt, to fish, to work on projects … all kinds of projects. I’d be on my tractor for hours and hours, even at night sometimes, with the headlights on still mowing paths. Later I’d chill out, listening to the night sounds—I couldn’t get up there fast enough.” O’Donnell, a John Carroll University (Ohio) graduate, stays busy in Illinois, too. Blue Ash Farms (johnnie-O.com), “is a true fabric of East Coast Classic meets SoCal Lifestyle.” He manages the company’s Northfield location, which opened in 2017, to provide “an O’Donnell presence,” he says. A group of women reserved a block of time at the space one spring to socialize and buy Father’s Day gifts. A variety of other events have been held

there, too. His late father, also named Bill, was general manager of WBBM-AM from 1974-82. The radio station became a leader in the all-news format under his leadership. He met his future wife, Julie, in Michigan, and they got engaged five days later. “We’re a fun, outgoing family,” O’Donnell

says, adding he has 24 nieces and nephews. “My siblings and I grew up with a great work ethic and are all very close. We all have our own hobbies, and I was known as the gardener, the fix-it guy, and the chef.” Add canoe builder to his list of current titles. He has meticulously handcrafted canoes with each of his kids—Billy III, 22; Patrick, 19; Jake, 16 (and a Barrington High School sophomore); and Abby, 13—from trees he harvested at Blue Ash Farm. “The atmosphere up there recharges me,” says O’Donnell, whose pulled pork and homemade barbeque sauce made appearances on The Ra-

chael Ray Show, and who served as a guest bartender on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. “I’m not much of a sleeper; getting up at 6 a.m. or 6:30 a.m. is sleeping in for me. It’s not unusual for me to answer emails at 4:30 in the morning and then research spirits at night. But so much about what goes on at Blue Ash Farm is about family and friends and spending time with them. IN THESE TIMES LATEST EXHIBITION AT THE ART CENTER HIGHLAND PARK IS A POWERFUL EXPLORATION OF HOW THE PANDEMIC HAS IMPACTED OUR LIVES. BY MITCH HURST THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Earlier this year when the COVID-19 pandemic began to rage, artist Caren Rudman committed herself to making a piece of art every day throughout quarantine and posting a photo of it to Instagram. Little did Rudman know that commitment would last through the end of the year and beyond. That daily exercise was in part the inspiration for a new exhibition at The Art Center Highland Park, titled "Of Time and Place." With the pandemic causing postponements of many planned exhibitions, Rudman, the Center's Curator, scrambled to pull together the virtual exhibition. "We went from having exhibitions scheduled two years out to saying, 'What are going to do in two months,'" Rudman says. "I kept thinking about how our sense of time and place is altered during this time." The Center put out a call for entries based on the "Of Time and Place" theme to explore not just the quarantine but the "Groundhog Day" aspect of life during this time. "I talked to many artists who suddenly couldn't get to their studios and don't have space to make art at home, and their work has changed because of it," Rudman says. "All of those things were at the forefront when we decided to do the exhibit. What are you doing during quarantine and how has it affected your process?" The result is an exhibition featuring 55 works by 31 artists, some of whom are based on the

entries for "Of Time and Place." Her works in the show, titled "Wrinkled Earth" and "Rough Seas," reflect the chaos and uncertainty of our times. "I've been looking for ways to show my work and exhibit and this seemed like a perfect opportunity," Kinzelberg says. "The topic of the pandemic made me think of two pieces I created right before COVID-19 hit and I just knew I had to submit them." Kinzelberg says she was in something of a creative slump before the pandemic and she created the pieces in the show to push through the drought. "I was kind of going against the flow, trying to break through and you can see there's conflict and power," she says. "I was trying to control the piece but at the same time realizing it's hard to control and doing a kind of creative dance. There's a struggle with what we're going through and both pieces are very apocalyptic." Dan Oliver is an artist and Exhibit Designer for

the Chicago History Museum, and his work is inspired by Chicago artists from the '70s whose art was influenced by historically Chicago themes. One of his three works in the exhibition, titled "Inferno," draws on the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. "The imagery I generate in my work, a lot of it I purposely do it in a way that mines the unconscious. I don't always know what it means," Oliver says. "Fire is a recurring theme and fire has many meanings, from hell and punishment to the state of the world with global warming." Oliver says fire is also a symbol of change, and particularly symbolic of the current times with the pandemic. "Our society is undergoing a lot of transformation right now so what I like in art is when there are multiple meanings of what's possible," he says. "I don't like to look at a painting and know what it means and that's that." Unironically, "Of Time and Place" opened with Zoom call when participating artists introduced their work and spoke about the meaning and inspiration for each piece. Rudman says that despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, she is proud that The Art Center Highland Park continues to help artists show their works. "I think right now artists are making work and they need to get it out there and share their ideas and share what they've done," Rudman says. "The hardest part for an artist is to make the work and have it sit in a studio. We all want to get our work out there and share and communicate. That's why we do it." PERSIAN QUAIL WITH POMEGRANATE WALNUT SAUCE

SERVES 4 For the marinade: 4 fresh quail, each halved lengthwise Juice of 1/2 fresh lemon, to make 2 tablespoons 2 garlic cloves, finely minced and crushed 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon cardamom seeds, ground fine 1 teaspoon ground cumin For the pomegranate walnut sauce: 8 ounces shelled walnuts 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 large white onion, finely chopped 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon cardamom seeds, ground fine 2/3 teaspoon ground turmeric 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 rounded tablespoon tomato paste 2 tablespoons pomegranate molasses 2/3 cup pomegranate juice 1/4 cup pure cane sugar 1 bay leaf 1 3/4 cups homemade or high-quality lowsodium chicken broth 1 teaspoon salt Fresh-squeezed lemon juice, to taste For the glaze: 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon pomegranate molasses 2 tablespoons honey 2 tablespoons boiling water 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly cracked pepper 1/2 teaspoon cardamom seeds, coarsely ground For the garnish: Arils of one fresh pomegranate 1/4 cup of the toasted walnuts

RECIPE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONICA KASS ROGERS Make the marinade: In a large, non-reactive bowl, combine the lemon juice and garlic. In a coffee or spice mill, pulse cardamom seeds into powder. Add cardamom, cinnamon, and turmeric to the lemon/garlic mixture. Place the quail, which you have halved lengthwise (each piece will have a leg and wing, and half of a breast) into the marinade and massage the quail with marinade to ensure all pieces are coated. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for two hours. Make the pomegranate walnut sauce: With the oven rack at center position, preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spread a large cookie sheet with parchment paper. Cover with the walnuts, evenly spread. Toast walnuts for about 7 minutes, until f ragrant and golden brown. Lift parchment paper with walnuts f rom tray and pour onto a clean kitchen towel. Rub the walnuts with the towel to remove as much of the pellicle (skin membrane)

of the walnuts as possible. Repeat again with a clean towel. Chop the cleaned toasted nuts to medium fine with a nut grinder, food processor, or sharp kitchen knife. The nut pieces should not be chopped too finely. Remove Âź cup of the chopped nuts to a small bowl and set aside to garnish the finished dish. In a heavy saucepan over low heat, add the olive oil and chopped onion and cook slowly for three minutes. Once the onion begins to be translucent, add 1/4 cup water and continue cooking until the onion is very soft and the water has evaporated. Stir in the spices and tomato paste and cook for another two minutes. Add the toasted, chopped walnuts, pomegranate molasses and juice, sugar, bay leaf, and chicken stock. Stir well. Increase heat to medium-high and heat to boiling. Reduce heat to lowest setting and simmer for 1 hour, stirring occasionally, until the sauce is thick. Just before serving, stir in a little fresh lemon juice to suit your taste.

Make the glaze: While the Pomegranate Walnut sauce is simmering, prepare the glaze. Combine olive oil, pomegranate molasses, and honey in small heat-proof bowl. Add boiling water and stir to dissolve. In a coffee or spice mill, pulse cardamom seeds just until coarsely ground. Stir cardamom, salt, and pepper into the liquid. Grill Quail: Heat a charcoal grill over high heat. Remove quail pieces f rom marinade. Grill skin-side up for 3 to 4 minutes. Brush with glaze. Flip quail skin-side down for a scant 2 minutes to finish cooking and add grill marks. Remove quail from grill and keep warm. Assemble: For each serving, spoon a generous portion of the pomegranate walnut sauce onto each plate. Center two quail halves on the sauce. Sprinkle quail with pomegranate arils and a bit of chopped toasted walnut. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

A mere “hello” from Peter Brown to family members, to churchgoers, to neighbors, or to strangers would never do. The friendly 5-year-old son of Grace Presbyterian Church Senior Pastor Marshall Brown and his wife, Allison, has always preferred to belt out a hearty “HELLO!” to anyone within earshot. “He’s the light of our life,” Marshall Brown, the staff leader at the Winnetka church since 2014, says with a hint of the Southern accent he developed in his native Dallas. “What a joy, what a buddy. Peter’s smart and verbal and engaging, no matter where he is. “I love,” the 47-year-old adds, “how assertive the little dude is around people.” ’Tis the season to be talkative and expressive, especially for Christians who don’t want the true meaning of Christmas to get lost in the avalanches of holiday gifts and decorations and amid the pall of the pandemic. “God gave us the gift of his Son to heal us and to show his love for us,” Brown says. “‘God has come near’ was the message. God was no longer far off. It’s beautiful, the way it reads in the King James Bible.” John 3:16, the King James Bible Version: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Brown preached the meaning of Christmas to his parishioners on December 13, reciting lines and recounting scenes from the 1965 animated television special A Charlie Brown Christmas. Senior pastor Brown, on Charlie Brown: “Charlie,” he begins, “was distressed, in part because of the commercialization of Christmas. He was also depressed, moping around, after Lucy had suggested he direct the local play and he picked out what was considered a terrible tree to others. “Linus,” Marshall Brown continues, “ later cheered Charlie Brown up by reading Luke 2 (the annunciation to the shepherds, in which angels tell shepherds about the birth of Jesus) and saying, ‘That’s the meaning of Christmas, Charlie Brown.’ I loved the carol ‘Hark!

The Herald Angels Sing’ that all the kids sang after they had dressed up Charlie’s tree.” At Lake Highlands High School in Dallas, Marshall Brown suited up as a 6-foot-3 small forward for the basketball program and, as a senior, got elected student body vice president. “I was a reserve player for the basketball team,” recalls Brown, now an avid, 11-12 handicap golfer who’d like to borrow his wife’s smooth, natural swing for at least every other round. “I was not a star; I was outclassed by most of my teammates. I was just happy to be on the team.” Brown then netted a history degree at Vanderbilt University and later dabbled in the finance industry—the field in which his father, Marshall “Buster” Brown Jr., had entered after college. The son spent one year with an investment company, before landing a job with several titles at Covenant Day School in Matthews, North Carolina. He taught history, coached basketball and baseball, and fulfilled chapel duties for two years at the private Christian school. “When the principal evaluated me, he told me, ‘You’re an OK teacher,’” Brown recounts. “But he was much more encouraging when he discussed my role in the chapel, telling me, ‘ You come alive and connect well with the students when you’re in that setting.’ He added that I needed to preach, needed to preach the Gospel.”

Brown, in his mid-20s, earned his Master of Divinity degree at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi, and served as the campus minister at the University of Alabama from 2002 to 2008. “I’ll always be thankful for having worked in the business and education worlds before heading to seminary,” Brown says. “I’ll never forget the day my parents (Buster and Anne) dropped me off at seminary, right near I-55 in Mississippi. I was upset, quite fearful, because it had hit me that I was about to start down a new path. But I found resolve, realizing there’d be no turning back. “The fire in the belly, I felt it,” he adds. “I felt compelled to tell of God’s love and grace. There’s great humility, in receiving the call to serve a congregation. I’m not a doer as a pastor; I’m a conveyor of God’s words, telling the Good News.” Brown answered the call to spread the word and to guide a flock at a large Los Angeles parish, where he met his future wife, Allison, who served as a volunteer at the church and was a lifelong Californian. Marshall and Allison had been married for only a little more than five months when they moved to Winnetka in the spring of 2014. They live less than a mile from Grace Presbyterian Church. “Warmth of the people—that’s what I first think of when I think of Grace Presbyterian,” says Brown, who has lived in eight states and three time zones in less than a half century. “I’ve heard others say that about our church; there’s a lot of love here. I find the entire North Shore fascinating; you’re not going to find many other areas in the country like this. They’re beautiful villages, not suburbs, and each is filled with interesting people doing interesting things vocationally. “And you have an iconic high school like New Trier, plus there’s Northwestern University in our back yard. That drew me, knowing we’d be so close to a leading research university, along with the opportunities to welcome NU’s faculty and students at our church. How fortunate are we? We’re surrounded by business leaders and thought leaders along the North Shore.” Brown’s attention returns to Christmas. Americans haven’t celebrated the religious holiday during a pandemic since 1919, right in the middle of the Spanish flu, also known as the 1918 flu pandemic (1918-1920). “We’ll still be dealing with the pandemic on the day after Christmas,” Brown says. “Political divisions in our country won’t suddenly go away then. Nor will economic stress. But we’ll have something we’ll always have—hope.” Hope. The feeling is a subject in “O Holy Night,” one of Brown’s favorite Christmas carols. It’s a timeless hymn. “I love the lyrics in it,” Brown says. “There’s that beautiful part that begins, ‘A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices, for yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.’ “A thrill of hope …” he repeats. “Isn’t that wonderful?” Grace Presbyterian Church is located at 440 Ridge Avenue in Winnetka.
