By Their Side NORTH SHORE FAMILIES HOST GRIEVING ISRAELI TEENS AS PART OF SUMMER CAMP PROGRAM. EDITED BY SHERRY THOMAS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

One of the many ways the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) supports families who have suffered the loss of a loved one during military service is to host a LEGACY Summer Camp program for B’Nai Mitzvah children or siblings of fallen soldiers. Every year, 150 of these Israeli teens are invited to attend summer camp throughout the United States, offering the opportunity to bond with peers who have experienced similar loss. Last month, 21 children (ages 12 to 13) in the LEGACY program had the opportunity to visit the North Shore while experiencing a two-week summer at JCC Camp Chi in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. The visiting Israeli teens—all of whom have lost a family member serving in the IDF— bonded and spent two weeks camping with American peers and forming lifelong friendships. They participated in classic American camp activities such as swimming, archery, rock climbing, and arts and crafts, as well as more familiar traditions like Israeli dancing and Jewish learning. As part of the LEGACY experience, FIDF Continued on PG 10

LARGE AS LIFE ARTIST SAM ROSENTHAL TAKES IMPRESSIONISTIC REALISM TO THE STREETS. BY MONICA KASS ROGERS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

We’ve all seen plein air artists at work, their easels pitched near lovely garden vistas, delicately painting miniature representations of the scenes at hand. But Lake Forest-based artist Sam Rosenthal takes this to a grand scale. Tonight, for example, the 6 feet by 10 and a half feet canvas he’s painting sits at the busy intersection of LaSalle and Wacker in downtown Chicago. The city view he paints is of the Chicago River—bridges, skyscrapers, passersby, the sky doing its sunset best, and all the mundane magic in between. People stop to watch, taking cell phone pictures and studying Rosenthal’s interpretation of the streetscape they are walking through. “People always gather,” he says. “I don’t mind. It doesn’t keep me from focusing on what I’m doing. When it’s going well, it can be really energizing.” The “what” he’s doing just now, is capturing the interplay between natural and artificial light, using his brush to apply dabs of oxide red and cadmium yellow—each visit to the location bringing him a little closer to finishing the work. When it’s finished, Rosenthal says the painting, still untitled, will be on display until March 25 at his one-man show at the Butler Institute of Continued on PG 10

NEWS LARGE AS LIFE Cont. from PG 1 American Art in Youngstown, Ohio. The painting has been in progress for two months. But some of his works take much longer. “‘Sunset at Wells and Wacker’ took six months,” he says. “And, ‘Playing Around the Magnolia’ took three subsequent spring seasons.” Rosenthal says it can be challenging when working on a large canvas like this one. “I rent a truck to bring the canvas to and from the site, and sometimes an assistant to ensure it doesn’t blow away into traffic, bystanders, or the river,” he laughs. “But I really enjoy painting on location, regardless of the season and surroundings. Working from life is the best way to get the actual colors, edges, and true experience of what I am trying to translate to canvas.” City views are popular with Rosenthal’s clients who have commissioned him to do public works on display at institutions including the Northwestern Medicine Prentice Women’s Hospital, Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital, and even the Chicago Federal Reserve. But Rosenthal’s work isn’t limited to urban landscapes. There are portraits such as “Funny Face,” and “Portrait of Ann Marie,” and still life paintings such as “Bowl of Peaches.” The year he was artist-in-residence at the Indiana Dunes, there were many peaceful, lakeside landscapes. While Rosenthal’s work has been described as “immersive” and he is an impressionistic realist, he’s not bound to any specific technique. “The subject of my work determines its own best mode of expression,” he says. “I paint what appeals to me, primarily in oil, but do some watercolor as well. I choose scenes and subjects that seem rel-

evant to people’s lives, environs, and what’s going on around them—whether it is an open field, an urban intersection, a bowl of fruit, or a little girl.” Rosenthal grew up in Lake Bluff, the third son in a family of four brothers. As an infant, Sam contracted spinal meningitis, a serious illness that dealt a blow to his early verbal expression. But Rosenthal overcame this quickly, showing an interest in illustration and developing mad math

Among the hosts were Debbie and Ron Sirt, and Anne and David Elovic of Skokie; Karen and Shai Lothan, and Kim and Adi Mor of Highland Park; and Sarah and Stuart Miller of Glencoe. “For the past 10 years Morrie and I have warmly opened our home and hearts to Israel’s FIDF LEGACY children, and this year was no exception,” says Lori Komisar, who hosted a pool party with FIDF National Board Member Morris Silverman at their Winnetka home. “Their smiling faces, their joyful laughter ... helping give these youngsters a respite from their daily Israeli lives and routine is our special treat each year! We hope that we can continue to be active participants in the LEGACY Program for many years to come. Their presence is our present.” She adds that bringing them here to make

After getting a BA from Washington University in St. Louis, Rosenthal kept painting, studying again at the American Academy of Art; Palette and Chisel Art Academy in Chicago; the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts in Lyme, Connecticut; and Bougie Studio in Minneapolis. He took a several year sojourn to Europe and Australia. He moved to Lake Forest with his family in 2015, establishing a private gallery, and has been busy painting ever since. With the evening light gone, Rosenthal packs up the U-Haul to return to his studio where he’ll refine the work further. “People often go through their daily routines without noticing the beauty around them,” he says, gesturing thoughtfully. “I’m doing my best to change that with my paintings. lifelong friends, meet the community, and share in the “uniquely American experience of summer camp” is a wonderful way to help them heal from their tremendous loss. Seven counselors who had experienced similar tragedies accompanied the children to help provide comfort and guidance. FIDF was established in 1981 by a group of Holocaust survivors to offer educational, cultural, recreational, and social programs that provide hope, purpose, and life-changing support for the soldiers who protect Israel and Jews worldwide. The FIDF LEGACY program supports thousands of widows, orphans, siblings, and other family members of fallen IDF soldiers through a variety of recreational activities, financial support, and lifecycle celebrations. The LEGACY Summer Camp program fully covers all travel and related expenses for each of the children who participate. For more information about this and related programs, visit f idf.org.

Family ties—and wins Fine Vintage softball squad teeming with mother-daughter combinations. BY BILL MCLEAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Laughter fills the air from an outside table at Buffo’s in Highwood. The highly contagious sounds—produced by six animated members of Fine Vintage, a women’s 14-inch softball team in a five-team league in Highland Park—mingle with the aromas wafting from pizza and french fries. It’s a Tuesday night, or Game Night, for the merry diners. Fine Vintage, sponsored by Buffo’s, will play the Flashbacks at Sunset Woods Park in Highland Park in about an hour. “We always look forward to competing on Tuesdays in the summer,” says Amy Young, an ace tennis player at Highland Park High School in the mid1970s and at age 60, Fine Vintage’s ace pitcher. “On Wednesdays, we hope to be able to walk normally.” The line elicits chuckles at the table. Some of the players then reach for slices of pizza with cheese, green peppers, and mushrooms; others grab fries. “This means a lot to me, means a lot to all of us,” says Fine Vintage catcher and Deerfield resident Susie “Cap’n Crouch” Blau, also 60. “Sure, some of us on the team are older, going up against much younger players in the league. But we’re fine with that. We love that challenge. We’re smart players, and we have fun every game.” Four of Fine Vintage’s athletes—including batterymates Young and Blau—get to enjoy competing on diamonds with familiar faces: their daughters. None of the other teams in the league comes close to matching Fine Vintage’s number of DNA connections. Young’s daughter is infielder Erin Gilbert, a former HPHS tennis player and sophomore-to-be at the University of Iowa; Jamie Lash, Blau’s daughter, played softball at Deerfield High School; mom Andrea Friedlander and daughter Jamie Friedlander, another former DHS Warrior softball player, wield bats and run the bases for Fine Vintage; and Karen Close, of Lake Forest, raised Fine Vintage teammates Kaitlin and Lindsey Close. “I couldn’t wait to be old enough to play softball with my mother,” says Gilbert, who was an eager Fine Vintage bat girl and scorebook keeper for many seasons before turning 18—the required minimum age for league players—in 2018. “My first game, I was so nervous. I was scared I’d mess up.” Gilbert, a left-handed hitter, would do just the opposite nearly two hours later against the Flashbacks on July 23, driving in the final two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in Fine Vintage’s impressive 10-0 victory. Action in the scheduled seven-inning game was halted because of the 10-run mercy rule. Gilbert’s mother was 20 years old and a University of Illinois student and tennis player when she received a phone call from Jan Ratliff, the wife of the late Bill Ratliff, a former tennis coach at HPHS. Jan had dialed to recruit Young to play softball for a local women’s team; the team name Fine Vintage— the brainchild of current player Joanne Biondi’s

16

Goldsher, a member of the women’s softball program at Rollins College the past two springs, batted third in the order for Fine Vintage on July 23. Other Fine Vintage members include: Sydney Levy, Hannah Matthews, Dar Rusch, and Sarah Spiro. Among Fine Vintage’s famous retired players are HPHS girls’ golf coach Cathy Nachman and Jill Roseth. The clever, creative Roseth—the designer of Fine Vintage softball cards years ago, with a photo of each player on the front and individual statistics on the back—had the best walk-up song before each of her at-bats last summer. She chose The Beatles’ tune “When I’m 64.” Roseth’s age last year: 63. The playoffs start in early August, when Fine Vintage will attempt to capture its first league title since 2011. The team had amassed a slew of league championships between 1980-2010. The league champion receives prize money. Fine Vintage spent all of its winnings on the team’s bash eight years ago. But the primary rewards for playing softball with good, ageless friends have little to do with dollars and cents. “My softball teammates today, I went to high school with many of them, kept in touch with them through college,” Young says. “We’ve been through so many wonderful life experiences together. Special, memorable experiences like weddings and the births of our children. Tough experiences, too, like deaths of parents. And we’re still playing softball, staying active, still having fun together. It’s neat. We’re close.” Young and her teammates occasionally gather at Buffo’s for Monday Night Trivia. It never hurts to exercise the brain on Game Night Eve. Their trivia team nickname? It isn’t Fine Vintage. It’s Sour Grapes. More evidence that no matter what their ages, these girls just want to have fun. WELL RECEIVED: Susie “Cap’n Crouch” Blau plays catcher for Fine Vintage, a women’s 14-inch softball league team in Highland Park. husband, Roger—would appear across jersey tops years later. “I was in awe of the players on the team, mostly because several of them were PE teachers at my high school,” says Young, an under-level tennis coach at HPHS and DHS and a preschool teacher. “Another one of my teammates back then had been a cheerleader for the Chicago Bears. I couldn’t believe it, getting the opportunities to compete with women in their 40s. Forty was old to me at the time. Now, here I am, 60, and still playing softball. There’s no way I thought I’d play for as many years as I have.” It’s the top of the fifth inning, with one out and Fine Vintage owning a 6-0 lead vs. the Flashbacks on July 23.

Young— who her proud daughter calls “the best pitcher in the league”—lofts a well-placed backspin pitch. The batter rips a sharp one-hop comebacker at Young, who calmly and cleanly fields the ball with her bare right hand, pivots smoothly, and fires another strike to first base for the second out. The win ups Fine Vintage’s record to 4-6-1. Young had allowed only one hit, a single in the second inning. Alison Morgan, a tennis and paddle instructor at Birchwood Club in Highland Park, tripled home Fine Vintage’s first run; Niles West High School Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Shirley Katz made it a 2-0 game with a sacrifice fly in a four-run fourth inning; and Young knocked in her second run of the game with a single in the fifth. Former HPHS softball all-state catcher Jenny

Things That Make You Go Om... STOLL TAKES A DEEP BREATH AND CELEBRATES THE 10-YEAR-ANNIVERSARY OF THE YOGA COMMUNITY SHE BUILT FROM THE MAT UP. BY ANN MARIE SCHEIDLER ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

I was always getting A few minutes into our conversation one summer morning in Lake Bluff ’s Scranton Alley, Forever Om owner Cilla Stoll demonstrated that she practices what she teaches. Breathe in, hold, exhale. We were talking about the anniversary of the yoga studio she opened a decade ago, what it means and what she will do to celebrate, when out of nowhere, I caught her taking a long, deep, cleansing breath. “I just found out that I have a serious maintenance issue I have to deal with, and that a crane and a roof might somehow be involved,” she says with a slight edge in her voice. “It’s a good thing I practice yoga!” But with a single exhale later, Stoll was present again—in the moment and ready to reflect on the yoga community she’s built. “I started practicing yoga years and years ago when I was playing lots of tennis and doing triathlons,” she says. “I was always getting injured and needed yoga to help my body heal and get stronger. I found that the more I did, the more energized I became.” So energized, in fact, that wanted to open a studio of her own. Her husband Ryan seconded

that motion and Forever Om was born. “I had no preconceived ideas of what the studio could be,” Stoll adds. “Forever Om took on a personality all of its own. It grew and morphed into this beautiful thing that I didn’t know it could be.” Before opening her studio, Stoll admits to being painfully shy. “As part of practicing yoga, I realized how much ego was fueling my shyness,”

simple template that all teachers use in leading classes. “All of our teachers know the same poses, but how they use them will be totally different. There is a bell curve to every class—whether it is a hot power class or not. My hope is that teachers will take their cue on what pose to move to next by what they see when they look at a body. When we do teacher training and I ask a student why they picked a certain pose and they don’t know, that’s not an answer. But if I ask the same question and they say that pose spoke to them in some way from what they saw—that’s what I want to hear. That’s a teacher connecting with her class.” It’s impressive that the typically Zen-filled Stoll can take such a hard stance when she needs to because it seems so counter to her more relaxed personality. “I knew when I opened the studio that I was going to have to switch between being a teacher and being a business owner,” she says. “I find that it’s easy for me to flip that switch.” Even with her daughter Kelsey—a popular Forever Om instructor and owner of her own retreat business, Compass Hiking and Yoga—Stoll needs to go back and forth between being her mother and being her boss. “Most days it’s easy,” she afraid adds. “It’s to step j u s t somein front thing I of a have to class.” do.
