Customized window and door solutions that go above and beyond.

uality windows not only provide the scenic views, structural integrity and curb appeal that every homeowner wants, but also play a crucial role in a home’s energy efficiency and value. Replacing old, outdated windows, can increase a home’s energy efficiency by as much as 30 percent, reducing drafts, and eliminating leaks and mold.

TWith his manufacturing plant right here in Chicago and decades of experience replacing windows throughout the city and suburbs, Russell Armstrong, owner of Chicago Window Guys (CWG), knows the territory well. After thousands of window installations, Armstrong and his team understand the width and breadth of customer needs.

hroughout the greater Chicago area, where architectural beauty meets extreme weather challenges, homeowners turn to Chicago Window Guys for reliable window and door solutions. Founded more than a decade ago by Russ Armstrong, the company has earned a reputation for delivering high-quality, energy-efficient products and exceptional service at competitive prices.

sums: “We can’t keep the polar vortex from coming to Chicago,” he quips, “but we can sure keep it from coming into your home!”

Energy efficiency is a cornerstone of their offerings. In a city known for its harsh winters and hot summers, Chicago Window Guys provides solutions that enhance home comfort and reduce energy costs. With countless design possibilities and colors, their design team is ready to tailor products to each client’s unique style.

Chicago Window Guys’ dedication to personalized service sets them apart from others in the industry. From the initial consultation to the final installation, the team ensures that each project aligns with the homeowner’s vision and needs. They offer a wide array of products, including double-hung windows, casement windows, bay windows, and custom designs, all handcrafted in the USA with high-performance materials. “Our windows feature fully customizable hardware recessed into the frame for a modern appearance and state-of-the-art functionality,” says Armstrong. “We offer countless design possibilities and colors, and our design team is ready to take notes on everything you need. Whether you want to add more natural light into your home with brand new skylights or invest in residential security products, our team of experts can deliver exactly what you need.”

“We offer the best product, with the best installation at the best price, guaranteed!” says Armstong. “We do this through attention to detail, a transparent sales process, and attentive customer service. Plus, every aspect of our windows is manufactured right here,” adds Armstrong, “which lowers our overhead and ensures we get windows installed on time and at a much lower cost than our competition without sacrificing quality.”

As well, CWG offers a price-match guarantee and a lifetime warranty on all parts and labor, including glass breakage—unique benefits in this industry. “We don’t play the “Buy one - get one free” sales game, which is simply a sales ploy,” Armstrong explains. “Our prices are always lower, for a much better product and installation.”

Their doors range from elegant French styles to robust modern steel entry options, catering to diverse aesthetic preferences and security requirements. “We offer a large selection of colors, styles, and high-quality materials for exterior doors for your home,” says Armstrong. “Our team of knowledgeable experts will help you select the best door for your home. Whether it’s fiberglass doors, a collection of patio doors, wood entry doors for an elegant touch, fiberglass entry doors for enhanced security, or composite entry doors for improved energy efficiency, we provide tailored solutions to match every preference and requirement.”

CWG’s signature windows include the latest energy efficient technology including, Argon/Krypton gas fill, three coats of low-E silver, foam filled frames, and a non-metal spacing system to ensure windows will never get seal failure. “We build a barrier to keep your energy in and the elements out,” Armstrong

All CWG windows are custom measured, and custom made. That includes everything from custom bow and bay windows to garden and projection windows. Expert installation is key. Says Armstong, “You can have the most expensive window in the world, but if it’s not installed correctly, you are back to square one. That’s why it’s so important to use a company that doesn’t rely on sub-contracted labor.” CWG is one of the few companies in the Chicago area that uses its own crew, he adds. “So, we know exactly who is going to be in your home installing your windows to get the job done right, with no pointing fingers.”

The company’s service area spans the entire Chicago region, including suburbs like Arlington Heights, Naperville, and Evanston. Their comprehensive approach encompasses sales, installation, and post-installation support, ensuring a seamless experience for homeowners.

Russ Armstrong

As well, owner Armstrong makes all sales calls personally eliminating three-hour sales presentations, sales commissions, and high pressure “buy now” sales tactics.

“Throughout the years, we have built a solid reputation,” Armstrong concludes, “with happy customers who refer their friends and family, and don’t just become customers, but friends. If you are in the market for windows, we would welcome the opportunity to give you a free estimate and earn your business.”

Chicago Window Guys is committed to quality, honesty, and prioritizing customers. With years of experience, they help homeowners find the right windows and doors, whether for better energy efficiency or a fresh look. By working directly with the owner and keeping everything local—no subcontractors—they deliver top-notch products and expert installations at up to half the cost of big national brands. Better quality, better service, and a better warranty, all at a price that’s hard to beat.

WHERE: Elmhurst Art Museum

This Fall, the Elmhurst Art Museum presents Shakkei: Work by Mayumi Lake and Bob Faust, the first major museum exhibition for Chicago-based artists Mayumi Lake and Bob Faust. Lake and Faust are mutually inspired by the Japanese principle of Shakkei (“borrowed scenery”), a design philosophy that incorporates organic features and architectural designs. The artists’ kaleidoscopic works use color and pattern to create immersive optical experiences, interpreting the Eastern concept broadly as a metaphor for empathy, adaptability, and the ability to hold multiple viewpoints simultaneously. The exhibition will feature recent large-scale artworks by Lake and Faust in separate galleries, as well as a collaborative new work combining their design languages. LINDSEY HANDRINOS

is the energetic founder of Green Life Swaps, an in-home wellness company. She began a wellness journey right before having children. “I wanted to make sure my body, mind, and home were the best and cleanest for this new chapter,” Lindsey explains. Once she and her husband settled in Hinsdale with their three children, she wanted to give back to the community and help families who want to live a greener, cleaner lifestyle. “I guide people in swapping out harmful products for safer alternatives.”

Some clients want to make over their whole home. Others start with a room. “I ask about goals then make a plan that’s attainable, not overwhelming. Say you want to start in the laundry room. We’ll go through the products you’re using, and I’ll provide swaps. We can set them up on auto ship and now your laundry room is stocked with products that work well,” she says.

She compares what she does to calling a professional organizer, saying, “I could organize my own home, but I don’t want to. With swapping out for greener products, you don’t know what you don’t know, but I do, and I’ll tell you.”

Before she was a clean-living expert, Lindsey grew up in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, the oldest of three children in an active family. She credits time spent skiing, fishing, and camping in Canada as a kid with her love of nature.

She also nurtures a deep love of travel. She considers a high school trip to Israel, a life-changing experience, as was moving to Greece to earn her Masters degree. Lindsey has lived in New York City and Chicago.

ESTEBAN VICENTE, MASTER OF COLLAGE

WORDS BY

ZACK WIRSUM, FREEMAN’S | HINDMAN SVP, HEAD OF DEPARTMENT, POST WAR & CONTEMPORARY ART.

PHOTOGRAPHY

COURTESY OF FREEMAN’S | HINDMAN

Esteban Vicente was among the few artists who carried the DNA of European modernism directly into the heart of American Abstract Expressionism. Born in Segovia in 1903 and trained in Madrid, Vicente arrived in New York in the 1930s, bringing with him a nuanced understanding of color, structure, and surface. As one of the first-generation New York School painters, he occupied a quieter but no less essential position in the movement.

We were honored to offer two exceptional collage works by Vicente in our May Post War & Contemporary Art sale: Composition (1957), a cool-toned, contemplative jewel of subtle force that sold for $108,450; and Untitled (1957), its warmer counterpart, buzzing with soft tans, grays, and a touch of delicate blue, which sold for $64,000. Though more modest in scale, each stood as a testament to Vicente’s sophisticated material sensitivity.

In the midst of Abstract Expressionism’s rise, Vicente stood shoulder-to-shoulder with some of its most notable figures. He was a core member of the New York School, a group of pioneering artists, and counted Franz Kline, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and Barnett Newman as colleagues and friends. A voting member of the Club, formed as a meeting place by a group of artists after their favored hangout banned smoking, and, for a time, a studio-mate of Willem de Kooning, Vicente moved within the center of postwar American art while maintaining a distinct voice.

This individuality is realized in Composition. In contrast to the gestural movement so often associated with Abstract Expressionism, Vicente arranges ripped paper fragments— layered with oil, charcoal, and gouache—into a work that feels somewhat calculated and architectural. In a palette of ash, ivory, and burnt umber, with a single pulse of deep ultramarine anchoring the lower half, the surface evokes a weathered wall or remembered landscape.

Composition came from the highly esteemed collection of Lydia Winston Malbin, a visionary collector

best known for her engagement with the Italian Futurists. Her holdings, however, extended far beyond a single movement, encompassing artists whose practices reshaped modernism across the Atlantic, and her acquisition of Vicente’s collage places him firmly within that narrative.

Like Composition, Untitled shares Vicente’s language of torn planes and quiet balance but with a softened palette, providing a thoughtful counterpoint. A depth of tan dominates the surface, layered with ashen grays and soft blues. Where Composition leans cool, Untitled elicits warmth. Together, the two works operate as tonal variations. As Vicente said himself, “Any one of my paintings is part of a sequence, part of a total … Each painting is solved in its own way, yet the continuation, the process, envelops all of them.”

Untitled comes from an equally distinguished American lineage. First handled by the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York, it later entered the collection of Chicago dealer and collector Bud C. Holland, before finding its way to the owner who put the piece up for auction. Its trajectory speaks to the enduring resonance of Vicente’s practice within both private and institutional circles.

Freeman’s | Hindman’s next Post War & Contemporary Art auction will be held September 25 at its Chicago saleroom, hindmanauctions. com.

A Restaurant for All (Micro) Seasons

A captivating collection of new rotating specials at Vistro Prime in Hinsdale gives us an opportunity to enjoy Paul Virant’s seasonal menu in new and more gloriously granular ways.

This past February, Paul Virant stood at the window of his restaurant, Vistro Prime in Hinsdale, staring into the snowy blur of yet another bleak Midwestern winter. February is to restaurants what the Sonoran Desert is to cell service. Generally, it’s a dead zone. Aside from Valentine’s Day—every restaurateur’s favorite holiday—you’ve got little to work with. A dearth of fresh produce. Potential guests suffering from holiday spending hangovers. And too many open slots in your reservation book for your accountant’s liking. Nonetheless, Virant had much to be thankful for. Most restaurants survive 10 months. Vistro Prime had just celebrated its 10th anniversary. Launched in 2014 as a more budgetconscious cousin to his fine-dining flagship Vie, the concept drew “all-age” crowds from the start. It was homey, never haughty. For every platter of wood-grilled sturgeon set atop a

bed of exotic mushrooms to forage through, there was a cheeky bowl of gourmet Cheez-Its to graze on.

Post-Covid, the concept evolved into Vistro Prime by adding a serious selection of rib-eyes, T-bones and the like. Virant repositioned Vistro as a kind of high-low hybrid: one part neighborhood steakhouse, one part casual American bistro. But great chefs are restless souls. What better way to kick off Vistro’s second decade, Virant decided, than to freshen up the menu with new tweaks and introduce a revolving list of modern-day blue plate specials.

One of Virant’s key decisions? Phoning Spencer Blake, a longtime kitchen collaborator. Blake had cooked in many of Virant’s kitchens before venturing out to work with other chefs and later assuming the role of executive chef at the now-shuttered Clever Rabbit. Virant’s pitch? Let’s get the band back together

and refresh portions of Vistro Prime’s menu.

Based on our most-recent visit, it’s safe to say that Virant and Blake have more than rekindled their old kitchen chemistry. Vistro Prime’s new menu has preserved virtually all of its signature dishes, while introducing a rotating list of specials that are guaranteed to convert once-casual visitors into loyal regulars. There are three offerings we couldn’t resist:

A daily chef’s pasta offering, a fish-of-the-day selection and a new bread basket—focaccia was the pain du jour during our visit—which is now baked in house by Spencer and Co., as opposed to relying on Publican Quality Bread as the restaurant did previously.

None of these new glorious specials are permanent fixtures. Every night, it’s the kitchen’s call as to what will come out. Some pastas may vanish after one service, while others might stay on for a week or more. Same goes for its seafood specials, which might be built around different catches or redressing yesterday’s fish selection in a new way.

The keyword of Virant and

Spencer’s new menu is “microseasons.” We are all aware of Mother Nature’s traditional four-part calendar. But Vistro Prime’s menu now celebrates the mini seasons within those seasons, the shorter pockets of fleeting produce and ultra-fresh seafood that arrive and depart faster than our New Year’s resolutions. Consider the glory that is ramp season in mid-spring. Or the rush of Copper River King Salmon, which can stretch from the late spring into the summer. These are the fleeting culinary opportunities that so many chefs skip over. At Vistro, Virant and Blake lean into them.

Take the gorgeously verdant pasta that Spencer made during our visit: a mint-pesto casarecce that’s so green you’d swear each squiggly noodle had developed its own grass stain. This is the glory of a Middle America summer in a bowl. The pasta freckled with firm, springy peas, crushed almonds, bits of guanciale, all crowned by a dollop homemade lemon ricotta. You’ve got an important choice to make: Do you want to delicately run your pasta through the ricotta or immediately fold it all together, the way egg yolks sauce up a carbonara.

I’ve eaten my way through enough of Virant’s menus to know he loves pairing sharp acids with soft vegetal flavors—thus the lemon-spring pea marriage. But consider Blake’s kitchen hack for preserving color and adding extra body to this particular pasta. First, he combines the cheese with crème fraiche, then he moisturizes the casarecce with

some of the leftover whey as well as the pesto, producing a texture that’s part silk, part genius. It’s nothing less than pasta primavera reborn.

I probably would have lodged a formal complaint if anyone touched what I’d argue are some of the most delicious greens in the western suburbs: Virant’s crispy Tuscan kale. The frilly oversized leaves are dressed with brown butter, lemon and honey, then flash-fried. The results are wispy and crispy, with a flavor profile that tastes like a Midwestern play on furikake.

Virant and Blake have upgraded some of their staples. I recommend the filler-free crab cakes, which are now gilded with pickled peppers and a chowchow remoulade, both accent flavors a tribute to Virant’s signature pickling skills.

The steaks remain stellar, too. Vistro source subprime cuts from DCK farms in Illinois, then breaks them down in-house. Each is massaged with oil, salt and pepper and then broiled. Before they’re sent out, they’re finished, Vistro style, with some beef tallow. Two new accoutrements are worth a spin: a bright flora chimichurri and a classic sauce Diane.

Vistro’s seafood towers, already generous, has only grown more opulent, but the most enticing new lure was the daily fish selection. We caught the early window of halibut season. (Spencer expects to showcase halibut throughout the season.) But this particular prep is already a dish-of-the-year candidate: Sauteed halibut mortared with a one-two-punch of woodsy morels and sweet green garlic. It’s a dynamite example of Vitro’s microseason philosophies in action. The meaty halibut, immaculately moist, is counterbalanced with crispy smashed potatoes and a mustard-tarragon vinaigrette . Imagine a Greek yiayia fist-bumping a French saucier and you’ll get the idea.

The more you know about Spencer’s background, the more this new collaboration makes sense. Born in a small town on the Illinois-Iowa border, Spencer cut his teeth working at a local supper club. From there, he paid his dues. While he was studying at the Culinary Institute of America, one of his instructors recommended he visit Vie. Spencer loved every pickled morsel of Virant’s menu. So when Blake looked for someone to apprentice under, his first choice was Virant.

This was followed by stints with Carrie Nahabedian at Naha, followed by the aforementioned stint at Clever Rabbit. Suffice to say, I’m thankful that the apprentice has returned to play the role of co-collaborator with his old instructor. Together, they’re reminding everyone of the advantages of being a Vistro regular. The steaks still sizzle, the kale still crunches. But remember that those perfect bowls of pesto pasta and mustardy halibut are in short supply. Just as the years are long, some of the best microseasons are very, very short.

Cocktails

There is one golden rule when it comes to any Paul Virant restaurant: When in doubt, order the potted and pickled things. This happens to be true for the cocktail list as well.

B.A.D. Lemon Drop:

This is not the treacly lemon drop that dominated your early 20s drinking regimen. Vodka remains the base, but that’s limoncello, a blueberry aigre doux and berry- sugar rim. Sweet and tart: my, my, what a blueberry pie.

Smoked Apple Butter Old Fashioned:

Not exactly sweater and old fashioned weather, you say? Save it. No Wisconsin supper club is going to offer this one: Old forester bourbon and smoked apple butter with orange oleo saccharum and black walnut bitters. Just remember: It’s the autumn someplace, somewhere.

RED DEVIL LEGACY

Hinsdale Central Foundation’s Hall of Fame keeps the heart of the community burning bright.

For over three decades, the Hinsdale Central Foundation (HCF) has strengthened the spirit of the Red Devil community. What began in 1991 as a simple fundraising effort for the high school has grown into a deeply rooted, widely connected network uniting generations of students, teachers, alumni, and neighbors.

At the helm of HCF is Cameron Cimala, who sits as President.

“The Foundation is instrumental in recognizing excellence— whether through scholarship for graduating seniors, the Young Scholars program for top academic achievers, or honoring alumni through its Hall of Fame,” he says. “These initiatives don’t just celebrate achievement; they build legacy and community.”

Beyond recognizing excellence, both past and present, the HCF has also made a visible impact through projects like funding athletic facilities and transforming unused spaces into central hubs for student activities.

“The Foundation’s work reflects a deep commitment to fostering an environment where both teachers and students can thrive,” he shares.

This engine is fueled by its enduring, multi-generational connection to the school community.

“Unlike many school support organizations that focus solely on fundraising or short-term goals, HCF operates as a long-term partner in lifelong learning,” explains Cimala. “It’s powered by alumni, parents, business leaders, and community members who are personally invested in the school’s legacy and future.”

And community matters. Cimala emphasizes that the Foundation relies on this support to sustain excellence. This includes teacher grants and student enrichment programs. It also honors traditions, as alumni and residents help preserve the school’s legacy.

That shared investment continues to show up in meaningful ways. The Hall of Fame, in particular, has become both a pillar of support and a highlight of Homecoming week.

This annual event brings together Red Devils of all ages to celebrate the school’s values and honor those who’ve made a lasting impact.

“It’s more than just a formal gathering,” says Cimala. “It’s a celebration of legacy, connection, and pride.”

Bringing in students, faculty, families, and alumni together, the Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who’ve made extraordinary contributions not just within their fields, but the Hinsdale Central community as well.

“For the school, it’s a moment to showcase what it means to

be a Red Devil,” explains Cimala. “Students see firsthand how the values they’re learning—whether it be leadership, service, or excellence—can translate into lifelong impact. It’s also a chance for current faculty and staff to reconnect with former students and see the ripple effects of their work.”

Rooted in community, the Hall of Fame celebrates the values that make Hinsdale Central truly special—and anyone can submit a nomination. What makes a nomination stand out? A powerful story. One that not only showcases accomplishments but also brings to life the nominee’s character, their impact, and their lasting connection to the Hinsdale Central community.

“The most memorable nominations go beyond resumes and accolades,” advises Cimala. “They illustrate how the nominee exemplifies the school’s values of excellence, leadership, and service.”

Exceptional nominees demonstrate qualities such as distinction in their field, lasting impact, mentorship, advocacy, resilience, and innovation. What brings a nomination to life are the stories, whether they be personal moments, milestones, and reflections, that show how the nominee’s journey reflects the spirit of the Red Devil community. Biographical details, career highlights, and meaningful contributions also help paint a fuller, more compelling picture.

“Ultimately, the strongest nominations feel personal and purposeful,” says Cimala. “They don’t just say ‘this person is accomplished,’” he says, “they show how that person embodies the legacy of Hinsdale Central.”

This year’s inductees include Bob Groseth, Dave Knecht, and Vinaya Sharma. Groseth is a nationally recognized swim coach who has led Olympians, NCAA champions, and dozens of AllAmericans. Knecht is known for his dedication to historical preservation and community service, as well as his craftsmanship in building award-winning homes featured in national publications. Sharma is being honored for his civic leadership and advocacy in education.

“Together, these inductees embody the diverse ways Hinsdale Central alumni shape the world, whether through sport, design, and service,” shares Cimala. “Their stories inspire current students to dream big and give back.”

“Hinsdale Central isn’t just a school. It’s a shared story,” emphasizes Cimala. “Ultimately, it’s a powerful reminder that the Hinsdale Central experience doesn’t just end at graduation, it evolves, grows, and continues to inspire.”

Game Night Meets Mahjong

A Guide to Playing Mahjong—In Style

With roots dating back to the mid-19th century China, Mahjong built its global fame tile by tile, reaching America in the early 20th century. Today, it’s still stacking up fans and making waves in Barrington, proving it has plenty of winning hands left to play. We tapped Sunny Esler, founder of Tigre de Tartán, a maker of stylish Mahjong mats and accessories, for tips to get started.

OPTIONAL, BUT LOVELY TO HAVE:

mat, tile shufflers, a bag or box for tiles, and a stylish tote to haul it all in. Tigre de Tartán has pretty much all of it—from tile sets to nappa leather tile bags and mats. Sunny even has racks and cocktail napkins that moonlight as surface protectors!

Teachers aren’t hard to find—they’re hosting games at clubs, restaurants, and yes, they’ll even bring the tiles straight to your living room. Sunny picked up the game from Katie Barber at the Women’s Athletic Club in Chicago, but if you’re in the Chicago area, she recommends calling up Adey Hannis of Holy Mahj—she makes house calls! Sunny adds, “Ask an older relative or neighbor. Mahjong is generational—someone always knows how to play.”

SET THE SCENE. Mahjong is an event. “It’s the perfect excuse to break out good napkins, pretty glasses, and a chic setup,” says Sunny. Think cocktail vibes meet game night glam: coordinated tile racks; a statement mat; maybe even a themed snack spread. It’s not just about playing, it’s about turning the table into a whole experience.

STAY IN SUIT. The Mahjong table doesn’t stop at game night—there’s a whole community shuffling online! Sunny loves staying in the mix with some of her favorite Instagram accounts like @ holymahj, @mahjongee, @yay_tigre_de_tartan, and @themahjsociety. “I get the best tips, inspo, and that cozy Mahjong camaraderie,” she says.

PICK YOUR S- QUAD. Mahjong is a fourplayer game, and although you can always branch out later, your core four matters. Once you’re together, Sunny advises holding off on the wine and cocktails. “Mahjong is joyful and addictive, but it does require your attention, especially at first. You need your brain on!” She suggests scheduling game time before 2 p.m.

MAHJ AND MINGLE. Keep your game sharp between matches. Sunny suggests finding ways to keep those tiles moving. Groups like The Mahjong Society host open play sessions where Mahjong lovers gather just for the joy of playing. Or, bring the fun home by downloading the Real Mah Jongg app—perfect for squeezing in a few rounds with bots whenever the mood strikes. “You’ll get used to the rhythm and structure before ever touching a real tile!” says Sunny. It’s not about prepping—just playing.

DJ Megan Taylor creates events that resonate, inspire, and stir the soul.

Megan Taylor

As a teenager growing up in the small rural town of Princeton, Illinois, Megan Taylor absorbed the music business through osmosis. Her dad worked for a subsidiary of Sony Records, placing CDs and merchandise in local retail shops throughout the Midwest. As a result, Taylor was the beneficiary of an endless stream of promotional albums, which she would spirit away to her bedroom for listening sessions.

“When I was a kid, I always had access to music,” she says. “And I was always the friend that made the playlists.”

Later, while double majoring in math and art at DePaul University, Taylor was exposed to house music, which immediately caught her ear and moved her emotionally. “House music spoke to my soul. For me, it’s a language that the body knows. It’s the music that moves the body.”

After college, Taylor began her career as an intern at Fig Media Inc., a boutique firm that books creatives including DJs. The founders, James and Michele Gustin, had built an established company known for cultivating sophisticated DJs and pioneering talent in an uncharted field. They invited Taylor to join the team, mentored her, and gave her a long runway to emerge as a female DJ in a deeply male-dominated industry. Their guidance and support were–and continue to be–instrumental in her rise.

These foundational experiences set the stage for Taylor’s emergence as one of the most sought-after DJs in Chicago. Her work includes events for the Chicago Cubs (including their World Series party), the WNBA, CHANEL, Nike, and Vogue. Recently, she deejayed a global business event for more than 4,000 people at Navy Pier. Her work also takes her outside of Chicago, and across the world for private events.

To operate at this level, it takes more than a playlist of banger tracks. As with any art, it’s impossible to pick out the secret ingredients that lead to success. But Taylor’s approach goes well beyond a passion for “digging” (locating tracks and unique remixes) and an encyclopedic knowledge of the songs making an impact on a global level. She strives to understand the people she’s working with and playing for.

porate launch party, gala, wedding, or special birthday party.

“My goal is always to have it feel like an event you’ve never been to before,” she says. She takes pride in her ability to “paint a picture” with the music, to keep the crowd energized and engaged, and deliver events that will be remembered long after the lights come down and the dance floor is empty.

“I really look at everything as energy,” she says. “There are some people who can see colors. I can see the energy of the song.”

To help her produce and shape that energy, Taylor seeks out places to find a creative spark. Topping that list is Tulum, where she spent a lot of time during the pandemic after her business came to a complete stop. It’s a place to recharge, tap into the vibrant music culture, and open her ears to emerging music and trends.

“Mexico is a place where I feel vibrant, and it brings me into my heart. I have so much resonance there,” she says.

She has a master’s degree in social emotional intelligence, and a lot of her work involves meeting with her clients, talking about the music

they love, what moves them, and helping them create the right mood for whatever event they are organizing–whether it’s a cor-

As it turned out, her business shutting down during COVID was a blessing in disguise. With live music events shuttered, Taylor got hired to run strategy for a book launch, which led to more engagements in creative strategy, producing retreats, and creating soundtracks for hotels and restaurants.

“I take corporate branding and translate that to music. Which is super fun,” she explains. Like the music itself, the pathways for Taylor just keep growing, morphing, and remixing. Whether she’s helping to launch a new product, perfecting a playlist for soon-tobe newlyweds, or running a healing music retreat, Taylor’s focus is the same. Using the power of music and human connection to transport, uplift, and forge connections.

“It’s frequency and vibrations, and it’s all really healing,” she says.

Reflecting on one of her recent events, Taylor captured her mission perfectly: “You play music that represents everyone, and then they all dance to it on the dance floor and they acknowledge each other. It’s an amazing thing. Magical things can happen. That makes me happy.”

Five Costly Mistakes High-Net-Worth Individuals Make During Divorce

Divorce is difficult for everyone, but for high-networth individuals, the stakes are significantly higher—and so are the risks. After more than 20 years practicing family law and representing thousands of clients, I’ve seen firsthand how even small missteps during the divorce process can lead to massive financial and emotional fallout. If you’ve spent years building wealth, protecting that legacy requires more than good intentions. It requires strategy, clarity, and a deep understanding of where high-net-worth divorces tend to go wrong. Here are five of the most common mistakes I see—and how to avoid them.

Skipping a Prenuptial Agreement

Too often, I hear, “We don’t need a prenup—we trust each other.” But prenups aren’t about mistrust; they’re about clarity and protection. Without one, divorces involving significant assets become far more complex, expensive, and contentious. A welldrafted prenuptial agreement sets expectations and offers both parties peace of mind, should the marriage end.

It’s not about predicting failure. It’s about ensuring that your finances, your business interests, and your future are protected from unnecessary risk.

Blurring the Line Between Business and Personal Finances

Many successful entrepreneurs inadvertently entangle their personal and business finances—maybe a spouse helps with start-up costs, joins payroll, or contributes informally to the company. These actions, even if casual or well-intentioned, can result in a spouse gaining a legal claim to part of the business.

To avoid this, keep all business matters clearly documented and legally distinct. Ownership structures, compensation agreements, and clear paper trails are essential. In a divorce, ambiguity only benefits the opposing party.

Relying on Verbal Agreements

Without written agreements, those informal arrangements can unravel quickly. I've seen many cases where one party believed there was an understanding, only to face a costly legal battle when the other party changed their mind. Put everything in writing, ideally in court orders, early and often.

Overlooking Privacy and Reputation Risks

In high-net-worth divorces, reputational damage is an often-overlooked danger. Without proper protections in place, personal communications, financial records, and business dealings can become part of the public court file.

I advise clients to establish confidentiality agreements, nondisclosure provisions, and even social media boundaries early on. In today’s digital age, reputation is currency—and privacy is power.

Underestimating Lifestyle Expectations

Courts don’t just look at what you earn; they look at how you’ve lived. If you and your spouse have enjoyed private schools, international travel, luxury real estate, or a particular lifestyle, those standards can influence support obligations after divorce.

Verbal promises like “You can keep the house” or “The retirement accounts are yours” may feel sufficient in the moment. But during divorce proceedings, the court relies on what is documented, not what was said.

Failing to understand or prepare for this can lead to long-term financial commitments that come as a shock. The best defense is awareness—know what the law considers, and plan accordingly.

Final Thoughts

A high net worth doesn't protect you from the emotional and financial challenges of divorce. In fact, it often complicates them. But with thoughtful planning and a clear-eyed strategy, you can protect what you've built and move forward with confidence.

At Merel Family Law, we’ve helped thousands of clients navigate complex divorce matters with discretion, compassion, and a commitment to results. It’s not just about what you have—it’s about how you protect it.

Steve Napleton and his wife suffered an unimaginable loss in 2022 when their 3-year-old daughter died from pediatric brain cancer. In October, the Steve Napleton Auto Group will raise funds for the fourth straight year to honor her legacy.

leads to a breakthrough that saves the lives of kids affected by brain cancer from then on.”

While pediatric brain cancer kills more children in the United States than any other form of cancer, many standard treatments for some types have not changed in 60 years. Funds raised by the Violet Foundation support clinical trials to develop better treatment options for children affected by DIPG.

To expand that reach even further, Steve says Napleton’s Countryside Mazda recently joined forces with Notre Dame Quarterback CJ Carr, whose family started ChadTough Defeat DIPG Foundation after Carr lost his brother Chad to DIPG.

“We followed CJ’s lead,” Steve continues. “He wanted to do something meaningful together to raise awareness and hopefully funds for pediatric brain cancer research, and Mazda has a real commitment to social issues that made it a perfect fit.”

For Carr, the mission is about honoring his little brother and finding a cure.

“It’s a great way to combine forces and do some good,” says Carr.“My family and ChadTough are really excited to be working with the Steve Napleton Automotive Group. I think it’s important to keep Violet and Chad’s legacy going and that’s another goal of what we’re doing here.”

When Steve and Madeline Napleton lost their 3-year-old daughter, Violet, to a form of pediatric brain cancer called Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma, or DIPG, they were understandably devastated, unsure how to move forward from such a tragedy.

But as he explains, Violet’s spirit and resilience at such a young age inspired them to keep fighting in her honor by founding the Violet Foundation—a nonprofit dedicated to saving the lives of children diagnosed with brain tumors.

“In today’s day and age, no child should face a terminal diagnosis, and no parents should face losing their child,” says Steve. “We hope that the money we raise for research one day

Every October, the Steve Napleton Automotive Group fundraises in honor of Violet’s birthday, who would have turned 7 this October 15. Last year, the effort grew beyond the group—bringing together more than 100 dealerships nationwide in an initiative called Driven for Kids. With the combined support of those dealerships’ customers and the Notre Dame football fanbase, Steve hopes his little girl’s mission will inspire others to rally behind lifesaving research.

“One of the most rewarding things is that people who never would have met Violet end up learning about her and her beautiful, silly, sweet spirit,” he says. “She never got a chance to fully write her own legacy, so we’re doing the best we can to help her do so now—and what better legacy could there be than to save children who came after her.”

Smile On

Dr. Mira Albert continues to inspire innovations in children’s dental health with her team at Brush Pediatric Dentistry, which now includes a second location in Downers Grove.

When Dr. Mira Albert (DDS, MBA, MS, FAAPD) founded Brush Pediatric Dentistry in Hinsdale in 2011, she was the mother of two young boys with a vision to make every child’s dental health journey fun and empowering.

“It’s hard to believe it’s been 14 years! In that time, we’ve had the collective joy of building something meaningful in our neighborhood—the first whimsical pediatric practice in the Western Suburbs,” says the Hinsdale resident and soon-to-be empty nester. “One of my boys just started high school, and the other is applying to college.”

Today, Dr. Albert’s mission to cultivate a new generation of children who are motivated to take pride in their oral health has come to fruition. She and her team have literally watched their young patients grow up alongside the business.

“From wiggly first visits to confident, post-braces teens— being a part of their dental health journey is a privilege I never take for granted,” she continues. “In keeping with American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommendations, we start early with a first visit by the age of 1. From the time that first tooth erupts, we want children to feel comfortable coming in for cleanings and routine visits.”

In addition to overwhelming support and enthusiasm from the community, Dr. Albert says she was fortunate to have a world class team from the very beginning. It was just a year after Brush Pediatric Dentistry opened that she met and began mentoring Dr. Maggie Rizzo (DMD), who joined the practice as a pediatric dentist in 2019 and last year became a partner at the new location in Downers Grove.

“We’ve always embraced the philosophy of kaizen —that small, consistent improvements lead to big change. Since 2020, that mindset has truly propelled us forward,” she explains. “I’ve empowered my team to help drive innovation, and the results have been incredible.”

Among recent digital innovations is the ability to share electronic health records across both pediatric locations and its connected adult practices, which means that a patient’s dental history can follow them from their first visit at age 1 all the way into adulthood.

“It’s the kind of continuity of care I always dreamed of providing,” Dr. Albert says, adding that Brush has also upgraded its clinical technology. “Digital scanners have nearly eliminated the need for traditional impressions, and the most fun upgrade? TVs mounted on the ceiling above our chairs! A classic movie or favorite show works wonders to distract and comfort patients—whether they’re a nervous toddler or a teen getting a filling.”

Knowing that families are more mindful than ever about the products and materials they use, she says that’s an area that has never compromised at Brush. “We only use the highest quality, safest and most effective dental materials and products on our pediatric/teen patients and our own families. A choice we get to make by being a privately owned practice. operated by doctors who care deeply about the health of their community.”

With six pediatric dentists across two locations and its hospital cases at Lurie’s, Dr. Albert says Brush Pediatric Dentistry is everything she imagined all those years ago— citing a recent interaction with a long-time patient who was about to start college.

“When I gently let her know she could transition to our adult practice she looked at me, surprised, and asked, ‘Well… will you be there?’ I had to laugh. Her dental health is so solid that I knew I could still meet her needs for a few more years, so I told her she could stick around until she was ready to move on,” Dr. Albert explains. “Moments like that remind me that what we’ve built at Brush is about more than just teeth—it’s trust, comfort, and relationships that grow alongside our patients.”
