“I think a change (a change) would do you good....”

- SHERYL CROW

s we head into the second quarter of 2022, there is something that has been pushed to the forefront of the luxury market: New Trends for Interior Design. For millennia, interior design trends have been used as aesthetic aids in our attempts to find some sort of inner peace: take the ancient Chinese art of feng shui, where spatial positioning corresponds with energy flow, or ancient Rome’s fondness for using earth-tone colors and geometric patterns in order to mimic the harmony of nature. “There is more and more research that shows the direct influence that our homes have, not only on our moods, but our overall health and well-being,” says interior designer Timothy Corrigan. So is it any wonder that in 2022—our third consecutive year in a global pandemic—the top interior design trends are again focused on making us feel emotionally at ease?

S

o far in 2022, we’ve seen some new colors, new textures and new materials, but most importantly, there are new moods. As we emerge from the last two years, blinking into the sunlight, the way we want to live our lives has altered subtly. How we want to spend time in our homes has changed - what their purpose is has shifted, and this has affected

this will never change. However, in keeping with today’s trend, adding texture and focal points can help break up a solid white kitchen and keep it current. You can achieve this by adding strategically placed glass cabinets to showcase patterned dishes, installing warm wood tones in a butcher block countertop on your center island, or adding an interesting design in the backsplash above the stove.

A

fter all this work are you wondering how much value you’ve added to your home? The industry’s standard ROI falls between 50% to 60% of your overall budget for remodeling. This means that if you spend $70,000 remodeling your kitchen then you should expect a return of approximately $35,000 to $42,000.

S

o why would you invest in your home like this if you know you won’t recoup the cost? To enjoy it of course!

every decision we’re making about decor. Are whispers of white kitchen cabinets being out of style making you cringe? After spending a small fortune on remodeling your kitchen with crisp white shaker cabinets, it can’t feel good to hear this rumor.

Warm regards, Connie

W

elcome to summer! This June/July double issue is packed with inspiration for a fabulously fun summer season. Our cover star, Michelle Streit, co-owner of the Barrington Boat Club debuts Country’s newest column—Country Loves in the Up Front section. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this latest addition. In Country vs. Town, Naz Shah, President of Nu Image Aesthetics and Wellness shares the journey that has led her to recently open a second location in Crystal Lake. Also in our Up Front is a cheat sheet for what to wear to Wimbledon for those hopping the pond to London to attend the match. Game, set, match. Navigating a career as a ballet dancer, Jessica Wolfrum lived a life on stage in the spotlight and continues to inspire others off the stage in her role as artistic advisor to the Barrington Dance Ensemble. Now a mother of young twins, her story in our Features is a fascinating read. Also in Features is a tribute to Barrington High School’s retiring Athletic Director Mike Obsuszt, who has been an integral part of our community since the late 90’s. In Luxury Offerings three gorgeous properties are profiled, including a stunner in Costa Rica. Interior designer Katie Wozniak, serves up summer tablescape inspiration in One Last Thing to ensure we chicly maximize our time outdoors hosting over the next months. Stop by her storefront in downtown Barrington for even more entertaining ideas. My hope is that we all enjoy reading this issue while relaxing under blue skies and warm sunlight.

Untold Story of the Founder of Lake Zurich, Seth Paine, Debuts in New Book

From the Pryce Lewis Collection at St. Lawrence University Law Library. Photo of William Pinkerton, Seth Paine, John Babcock and unknowns during the Civil War

Former Barrington resident Nancy Schumm has authored a richly detailed book, The Anointed One, on the story of Seth Paine, founder of the Village of Lake Zurich. Paine’s story evolves against a backdrop of cross-country migration and change from 1816-1872. Born in Vermont, Paine headed west to Chicago with a dream to make a name for himself and seize new opportunities. Paine’s outgoing nature and pioneering spirit garnered him success in business while he dreamed of seeding a new community that would reflect his values. He was an active member of causes related to temperance, peace, and equality for the formerly enslaved, women, and the working class. After the Civil War, Paine established the Chicago Woman’s Home, which provided comfortable housing and support for single women.

She’s been known to say, “If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun.” I think we’d get along quite well! Where do you look for inspiration? SMILE Why accreditation matters when choosing a cosmetic dentist. WORDS BY JAMES T. GAVRILOS

Think about the ways we select a dentist. Some will ask a friend or neighbor. Others will go online and check reviews. Some will even respond to advertising that comes in the mail. But even with all of these methods, we cannot be sure how good their work is. This is where accreditation comes in. Imagine that your dentist’s work could be evaluated by the top dentists in the world. They would have to submit their work for evaluation and it would have to pass the highest of quality standards. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) has a program that performs this exact type of screening. For 35 years, the AACD has offered this credentialing program.

Accreditation serves to set the standard for excellence in cosmetic dentistry. Achieving accredited status from the AACD requires dedication to continuing education, careful adherence to the protocol, and a resolve to produce exceptional dentistry. Over the past 35 years, thousands of dentists have attempted to complete the process but only 400 have been able to meet the standard. Of these 400, only 200 in the world still practice dentistry today. The process begins with a written examination. If the candidate passes the written part, they can then start the clinical portion. This involves completing five different reconstructive procedures that are pre-determined by the association. Each case is photographed under high magnification and also requires a written report. Once the documentation is complete, the case is submitted for evaluation. After the clinical portions are passed, a final oral examination is conducted along with a review of all the clinical photography and reporting. Only after passing all of these steps does the dentist receive his accredited status. When you are ready to look for a new dentist, let AACD help you. Go to aacd.com and select the “Find a Dentist” tab. You will be asked to enter your location and you will be given a list of the dentists in your area. Keep in mind that less than 1 percent of the world’s dentists are accredited so you may have to travel to get to one. This first step will be a lot more reliable in getting the quality work that you need than asking a neighbor, going through online reviews or responding to a coupon. Dr. James T. Gavrilos is accredited with AACD. His office is located at 129 Park Avenue in Barrington. For more information, call 847-3814040 or visit barringtondentist.com.

DIVORCE AND FAMILY LAW PARTNER BEERMANN LLP

Q: How long will my divorce take? A: That depends on the complexity of the issues involved and how quickly the parties can reach an agreement. There are divorces that can be completed in just a few weeks, and those that take a few years. On average, the process is completed within 9-12 months after filing. Q: Am I “legally separated” while going through divorce? A: No. A legal separation is a different legal action that generally involves the same process as a divorce, only the parties remain legally married at the end. Many couples finalize their divorce while still living under the same roof. There’s a long list of questions at the start of the divorce process. But as these questions get answered, I see clients become increasingly hopeful about getting through it and thriving on the other side. Phone: 847.681.9600 Email: slvitek@beermannlaw.com

SPOUSAL SUPPORT

Strategic Divorce attorney Michone J. Riewer reviews Illinois law as it applies to spousal support. WORDS BY MICHONE J. RIEWER PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMES GUSTIN STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA HAIR & MAKEUP BY LEANNA ERNEST

S

pousal support, also known as alimony and maintenance, is the financial support paid from one spouse to the other. It may be ordered on a temporary basis during a divorce and is often ordered following a divorce for a prescribed period. The purpose of maintenance is to enable a spouse who is not capable of supporting themselves to continue to have the lifestyle to which they

became accustomed during the marriage. The Illinois maintenance statute requires the court to consider several factors to determine if an award of maintenance is appropriate. If the court deems that maintenance is warranted, the next step is calculating the payment’s amount and duration. The Illinois legislature has enacted a statute that provides a formula for calculating this amount in cases where the parties’ combined gross income is less than $500,000. This formula considers each party’s respective net income from all sources. The statutory formula calls for 33.333 percent of the payor’s net income minus 25 percent of the recipient’s net income. The outcome of this formula equals the yearly support that should be paid. The statute imposes a cap on this formula so that one spouse cannot earn more than 40 percent of the couple’s combined income. In cases with a combined gross income of $500,000 or more, the court has broad discretion in determining maintenance. Courts often follow the statutory formula described in the above paragraph on the first $500,000 and then often order a lower percentage to be applied to income over $500,000 per year. Even though there is a statutory formula, the calculated amount can be negotiated by the spouses if they agree or if there are unusual circumstances. However, it is unlikely that a court will deviate from the formula. Once the amount of spousal support is determined, then the question turns to how long that support must be paid. This question is answered by determining how long the couple was married. The years of marriage are measured from the ceremony date to the divorce filing date. Those years correspond to a specific multiplier. For example, for parties married less than five years, a multiplier of .2 times the number of years is used. For the parties married eight to nine years, a multiplier of .36 is used. These multipliers increase incrementally up to 20 years of marriage. After 20 or more years, the length of spousal support equals the number of years of the marriage. If the marriage lasted ten or more years, spousal support does not automatically end when this initial period is over. Once the initial period is over, the court will determine if support should continue based on the needs of the receiving spouse, the paying spouse’s ability to pay, and the total circumstances at the time of the review. Spousal support can be modified based on a substantial change in circumstances like a significant increase or decrease in either party’s income. The parties can agree to a modification of maintenance themselves through negotiation or mediation. However, if the sought-after change cannot be agreed upon, either party can file a petition with the court and a judge will decide how much, if any, change is appropriate. Prior to January 1, 2019, an ex-spouse paying support could deduct the expense from their federal taxes while the ex-spouse receiving maintenance payments had to claim the payments as taxable income. Following a significant revision of the Illinois statute, spousal support is no longer deductible by the payor or taxable to the recipient. This change is not retroactive and only applies to spousal support awarded after January 2019. If the spouse receiving support dies, remarries, or cohabitates, spousal support is terminated. Have any questions about how to calculate maintenance in Illinois? Wondering how the unique aspects of your situation may impact spousal support? Seeking to modify an existing maintenance agreement? Strategic Divorce’s skilled attorneys can ably handle the issue of spousal support along with every other aspect of divorce. Michone J. Riewer is an attorney with Strategic Divorce in Lake Bluff, 847-234-4445, strategicdivorce.com.

Retiring Barrington High School athletic director, Mike Obsuszt

A-1 AD Mission of the sports programs at Barrington High School went well beyond aiming for red-letter days on fields, courts, and in arenas under the steady leadership and forward-thinking of retiring BHS Athletic Director Mike Obsuszt.

D

ozens of screaming fans spilled out of the stands and sprinted across the court to celebrate with their hoops heroes. Others danced, pumping their raised arms and jumped joyously. Barrington High School’s boys basketball team had just edged Glenbrook South 52-50 in a Class 4A supersectional at Forest View Educational Center in Arlington Heights. The triumph on March 7 clinched the Broncos’ first Final Four state berth in program history. Barrington Assistant Varsity Basketball Coach Michael Sowa spotted Barrington Athletic Director Mike Obsuszt amid the rampaging euphoria, marched toward him resolutely, and gave him a bear hug. Sowa, 36, lifted Obsuszt briefly before returning the 60-year-old to the hardwood. But this was more than a staffer attempting to squeeze a lung out of an administrator. Sowa had suited up for Broncos hoops teams in the early 2000s and played under the direction of … Obsuszt, who coached the program from 1995 until 2002 before succeeding Bob Carpenter as the school’s athletic director in 2003. “Mike Obsuszt loved coaching basketball and loved talking basketball off the court,” says Sowa (BHS Class of 2003), a forward on Obsuszt’s 2001-2002 Sweet Sixteen club (24-7) in Class AA. “He’d reminisce about a game from 1997 and tell you all about it, with details about what this player did in the fourth quarter or what another player did in a pivotal moment. After I became an assistant coach, I’d sit in his office before practices and he’d tell me the great things other Barrington teams were doing or he’d describe what a Barrington athlete had just accomplished.” “He still is,” Sowa adds, “the ultimate storyteller.” Obsuszt’s 27-year—and highly successful—chapter at BHS ends in late June. BHS teams had collected 23 state trophies and won three state titles before Obsuszt took the AD reins in 2003. The totals during the Obsuszt Era: 49 state trophies and six state championships. That Final Four boys basketball team this past winter wound up taking third place in Champaign this past winter, one weekend after the BHS girls basketball team finished in a program-best second place at the 4A State Tournament in Normal. “He’s the best,” says New Trier High School Athletic Director Augie Fontanetta, a former Fremd High School athletic director. “Personable, professional, selfless, well-respected—Mike is all of that. But the word that comes to mind first when I think of him is ‘genuine.’ I’ve seen him around coaches and parents and athletes, as well as his staff, and it’s always clear to me that he genuinely cares about people, his job, Barrington’s teams, and the teams competing against Barrington.” “Mike,” he adds, “always brings energy, the good kind, to situations. I’ve never heard him complain … about anything. He’s a leader. He was a mentor to me in my early years as an athletic director.” Lake Zurich High School Assistant Principal Ryan Rubenstein will become Barrington High School’s eighth athletic director on July 1. “I’ll miss the people, the interactions with our coaches—the best coaches in the state—my administrative staff, the athletes, and the

former athletes who return to the school and tell you how grateful they still are for the experiences they had as student-athletes,” says Obsuszt, who, before starting at BHS in 1995, served as a men’s basketball assistant coach at North Park College for a season after completing a 10-year tenure at Walther Lutheran High School (WLHS)(as a teacher, as a coach, and, for five years, as athletic director) in Melrose Park. “Our goal at Barrington, every year, is to win games,” adds the husband of Michelle and the father of four (Ashley O’Brien and sons Ryan, 25, Kyle, 23, and Tyler, 17). “But our mission is to help kids become better people, better students, better athletes—in that order.” Obsuszt attended Lutheran High School West in Rocky River, Ohio, where he played football and basketball and ran track. The savvy, 5-foot-10 point guard earned starting nods in his junior and senior seasons, leading a 16-team conference in steals and ranking third in assists before receiving Team MVP honors as a senior. But his basketball career took a detour in the first of his two seasons at Concordia University Texas in Austin. Every hoopster but Obsuszt stood 6-feet or taller. “I realized I was going to be that guy who heard cheers only after entering as a reserve player late in games,” Obsuszt, a Lake Zurich resident, recalls. The Concordia coaching staff offered Obsuszt the rare opportunity to be a player/coach for the program’s JV squad. He took it. After his sophomore year he transferred to Concordia University Chicago in River Forest, student-taught at WLHS for a year, and earned his teacher certification. For several years, as a full-timer at WLHS, Obsuszt taught social studies, coached basketball and football, and oversaw the athletic department. On Thursdays before Saturday afternoon home football games, he and other football coaches turned into maintenance workers, striping the field’s yard lines with white paint. “We had to do it,” Obsuszt says. “You know what, though? It was a good thing, because we bonded as we got the field ready.” Obsuszt left his mark at BHS, too. His fingerprints are all over Barrington Community Stadium, which debuted in 2008 with the installation of field turf and a host of other enhancements that transformed an adequate 1970s high school venue into a gleaming, multi-purpose stadium. Obsuszt worked with architects from start to finish and asked for wish lists from coaches, ticket sales and concessions workers, and marching band personnel. “I enjoyed every aspect of the project,” Obsuszt says. “The stadium is a source of community pride.” Obsuszt formed the school’s Athletics Leadership Council about five years ago. Guest speakers have led discussions about what it takes to have a positive impact as a teammate and the importance of demonstrating proper body language during competitions, among other topics. “Mike,” Fontanetta says, “makes educated decisions. That’s what effective leaders do. I respect his voice, his opinions, each time he speaks. A lot of people do. He loves being a high school athletic director. Loves his coaches and administrative team, too. “But what I’ve always admired the most about Mike Obsuszt is that he does what he thinks is best for his school’s athletes.” JWC | COUNTRY 51

allet dancer Jessica Wolfrum once lived her life under the spotlight. “It was home for me to be on a stage,” explains Wolfrum to Country on a chilly April morning. “I have been on stage my whole life. Dancing has always defined me … which has left me with a challenge to figure out at this very moment.” Her voice suddenly grows quiet. “Who am I, now that I am no longer on stage?” the classically trained contemporary dancer asks aloud, as she seemingly awaits a whisper from beyond. Indeed, in recent years, Wolfrum has found herself asking that question over and over again, once during a pandemic that shut the stage she adored down, and again when she got the news that at 41 years old, she not only was going to have a baby … but she was going to have twins. “My daughter Sofia has a natural rhythm, and she does these cool movements with her arms,” Wolfrum says with a slight chuckle as the 14-month-old twins sleep soundly just a few steps away. “In fact, both she and Sebastian move to the sound of music.” It is these characteristics that certainly remind Wolfrum of her childhood days, when she was the one who showed an innate talent for all things dance. In fact, Wolfrum herself began dancing at the age of three years old, as her parents moved her from one dance studio to the next in their hometown of Buffalo, New York. “My parents drove about three days a week, an hour each way, to a number of ballet companies that I was involved in,” remembers Wolfrum, who ultimately attended the University of Buffalo, graduating cum laude in 2002 with a double major in Psychology and Dance. “I didn’t have the classical body though. I had muscles. I was thin, but I had more of a jazz body, but I did all the things, all the dance forms.” After college, Wolfrum went and auditioned for several dance companies, ultimately landing at the nationally and internationally acclaimed River North Dance Chicago, where she was a company dancer for 14 years. “I moved to Chicago two weeks after graduation,” remembers Wolfrum, who also later took on the reigns as an artistic mentor to the students of Barrington Dance Ensemble, spending her days teaching everything from ballet to musical theatre to jazz and tap. “I was a guest artist for (Barrington Dance Ensemble’s) annual Nutcracker performances for over16 years,” Wolfrum continues. Everyone at Barrington Dance Ensemble is like a second family to me. They have been so supportive of me, right from the very beginning. It’s been a very loving and nurturing relationship for me through the years.” After retiring from River North, Wolfrum also dove feet first into musical theatre, performing as a dancer, singer, and actor in productions such as Carmen, My Fair Lady and The Pearl Fishers at The Lyric Opera of Chicago

and The Marriott Theatre. But soon, another love began pulling at her heart. “I was going to be 40 and I wanted a family,” she remembers. “I was having trouble. And my husband was like, ‘OK, when are we going to do this?’ So, when COVID hit, it was actually a blessing in disguise. (Pauses.) Now that I think about it, it dawns on me that the last time I danced was right before COVID.” She draws in a deep breath. “For me, the pandemic forced me to be okay with saying goodbye to the stage,” Wolfrum says. “I knew that the idea of performing was gone for awhile. So, I decided to concentrate more on teaching. And then I got pregnant. I knew that my life had shifted. I found out I was having twins. And if COVID didn’t happen, I don’t think I would have these two.” And today, as much as she basks in the happiness that comes with being a mother, she admits that she finds herself missing the magic that comes from dancing. “When I was on the stage, it felt like I could be myself and I could truly express myself,” she says. “I loved sharing that passion of mine with the audience. The energy was palpable.” And while that energy of which she speaks of is currently evolving, Wolfrum says she can still feel it. So much so that today, at 42 years of age, she finds herself craving it all over again. “Performing will always be a part of me,” she concludes. “I’ve gone

“....the last time I danced was right before COVID.” through a couple of retirements throughout my career, and the stage always brought me back. I’m back to directing and choreographing, but I don’t think I will dance anymore. At 42, my body is just not there anymore … and that’s okay. I’m okay with it. I’m proud to say that I had one of the longest careers in Chicago. I’ve been here professionally dancing from 2002 to 2020. I’m really proud of that and now I will watch others and support them.” For more information on the Barrington Dance Ensemble, visit barringtondance.org. JWC | COUNTRY 56

Fall-off-the-Bone Rosemary, Garlic, and Mustard Pork Roast WORDS, RECIPE AND PHOTOS BY MONICA KASS ROGERS

L

ow and slow. There is no better way to cook a nice, big pork shoulder roast—one that you have marinated in a delicious rub of garlic, rosemary, mustard, and miso. At 250°, the oven seems barely on. But as the hours pass, four … six … seven, the house fills with the most delicious aroma. And when you pull that roast from the oven and slice it, the meat falls off the bone, breaking up into tender morsels of savory goodness. Eaten that way, sauced with juices, and paired with vegetables, it’s irresistible. But you can also fill tacos with the meat as we like to do, adding some pickled onion and

cotija cheese crumbles on top. To make this roast, we used a seven-pound, bone-in, pork shoulder (also known as pork butt) with the fat cap scored, searing it for 20 minutes at 450° and then turning it down to 250° and roasting uncovered for the remainder of the time. If using a smaller-thanseven-pound roast, start checking for fall-off-the-bone tenderness at the four-hour mark. If larger than seven pounds—say, in the nineto-10-pound range, you’ll roast from 8 to 10 hours. Recipe adapted from Katie Workman, with kudos to Tyler Wolff-Ormes for the idea of adding miso to the marinade.

serves 12

METHOD MAKE MARINADE

INGREDIENTS FOR PORK ROAST

• 7 lb. bone-in pork butt roast, with fat cap on • 4 large sprigs rosemary, divided (You will remove stems from two of the sprigs, mincing leaves to make 3 Tbsp. Save two remaining sprigs to place on top of roast) • 3 Tbsp minced garlic (7 or 8 cloves) • 1 Tbsp white miso paste • 1 Tbsp anchovy paste • 1 tsp Kosher salt • 2 tsp freshly cracked black pepper • ¼ cup olive oil • 3 Tbsp country Dijon (coarsely ground) mustard

FOR TACOS • • • • • •

1 package fresh corn tortillas 3 cups shredded pork from roast recipe 1 cup pickled onion 1 cup crumbled cotija cheese Fresh cilantro, optional Hot sauce, optional

In the bowl of a food processor, combine garlic, miso, and anchovy pastes with minced rosemary, salt, pepper, and olive oil. Pulse to create a paste, scraping sides of bowl as necessary. Stir in mustard. Pat pork roast dry. Place in a large Dutch oven, fat side up. Using a very sharp knife, score fat in a diamond pattern. Rub roast all over with the marinade. Place two remaining sprigs of rosemary on top. Cover and refrigerate roast for 2 to 24 hours. (Note: we marinated the full 24 hours)

ROAST PORK

Remove Dutch oven from refrigerator to bring roast up to room temperature. Preheat oven to 450°. Place pork in preheated oven for 20 minutes to brown the top. Reduce heat to 250° and continue to roast for 7 to 8 hours, until a meat thermometer slides into the roast with no resistance and registers 180°. Remove roast from oven and allow to rest for 20 minutes before slicing or shredding. Note: slices will break up into tender pieces.

MAKE TACOS

Preheat oven to 325°. Wrap tortillas in foil and heat in oven until tortillas are soft and warm. Fill tacos with shredded or chopped pork. Top with cheese, pickled onion, cilantro and hot sauce (if using.) Serve hot.

re you longing to escape from a fast-paced world? To find a slice of paradise and relax? Caerula Mar Club is the luxury boutique resort for you. Located on South Andros Island in the Bahamas, it is an easy trip from Chicago. We boarded a flight to Fort Lauderdale and a few hours later we popped over to Makers Air, a private charter airline company with the tagline— “connecting passengers to paradise.” The scenic flight to South Andros was just over an hour and proved the perfect vantage point to view many of the famous Bahamian “blue holes” —underwater cave systems famed for their azure centers and turquoise rims. After arriving at the quaint Congo Town-Queen international airport, it was a four-minute drive to the resort. Once past the Club’s

gate, we meandered down a curving white gravel drive hugged on either side by dense, glossy hedges. Around a final curve, Caerula Mar emerged like a mirage. General managers and hospitality industry veterans, Ron and Margaret Gratzinger, greeted us like old friends. The resort’s emphasis on sustainable and natural materials evokes a “barefoot breezy” feel with a luxurious vibe—we couldn’t wait to kick off our shoes. Our refreshing welcome mocktails—bearing hints of grapefruit and pear—in hand, we headed to our beachfront villa. Soaring ceilings, pristine contemporary décor, soft white oak floors, and sumptuous linens welcomed us into the open-plan living area. Beyond the main bedroom was an immense marble bathroom with a shower sporting three showerheads and a bench—an indulgent way to wash away the sea’s salt and sand. The expansive villa featured two bedrooms, a sitting area, and a large veranda. In the evenings, we often spent time on the latter listening to the ocean’s orchestra while engaged in games of Rummikub borrowed from the resort’s game room. Caerula Mar Club features three dining concepts. Switcha, the whimsical café and smoothie bar located just off the lobby, became our go-to for coffee and breakfast (the Acai bowls are a must). We selected poolside/ Villa aerial view

oceanfront open-air Driffs as our daily lunch spot. Here we savored delicious salads topped with fresh catches of the day cooked Bahamian-style or, my husband’s favorite, a spicy fried chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries. According to both my husband and daughter, the fries are reason enough to return to this idyllic setting. Evenings were spent savoring Lusca’s curated daily menu featuring a fish, meat, and vegetarian entrée option. A favorite dish was the ginger and citrus-marinated ahi tuna, crusted with sesame seeds, served over rice noodles, with carrots, zucchini, onions, garlic, green onions, and a hoisin sauce-sesame ponzu dressing—absolutely divine. Luckily, the dessert menu remained constant as we would have sorely missed our nightly selection of the chocolate pecan tart served with caramel, Chantilly cream, raspberry puree, and fresh berries. We did mix it up a bit one evening and ordered the peanut butter mousse served with grilled pineapple salsa and goat cheese with lavender ice cream; a dish that gave us a true appreciation for the chef ’s gift for perfectly pairing ingredients. Each day began on the beautiful Bahamian white sand beach. The long stretch of sand suited my husband’s extended runs and my daughter and my morning walks. The shade of the towering palms encouraged me to finish several books that had occupied my nightstand for weeks. The poolside hammocks offered a breezy alternate location for reading or just daydreaming. I spent hours in my suspended paradise swayed by the ocean breeze. On days we felt adventurous, we used the complimentary water sports equipment to test our balance on the stand-up paddleboards

or take a spin in the kayaks. One afternoon, the three of us set off to explore the island on the resort bicycles and hiked four of the island’s blue holes. It was a lovely way to explore the island’s rocky terrain and become acquainted with the island’s friendly residents. When we passed a bus full of school children wearing bright blue uniforms and waving enthusiastically, it seemed they couldn’t have been happier to see us. We also ventured off the resort grounds for a day of snorkeling. Our guides picked us up for a quick ride in an open-air Jeep to the dock where we made a stop at a local conch establishment to meet our restaurant proprietor/captain. Once on the water, we headed to a lagoon. Hopping into the pristine waters, we swam through a sea of tiny jellyfish—lucky for us, not of the stinging variety. We encountered an assortment of conch, lobster, and fish—favorites were the Queen Triggerfish and the Lionfish—both appearing as

if dressed for some type of aquatic ball. The Queen looked as if she had spent hours perfecting her elaborately patterned eye makeup, and the Lionfish’s frilly fins resembled a glamorous “gown.” We also met up with turtles, and I was surprised to learn that the Bahamian turtles are quite speedy – very different from their leisurely brethren familiar to us from other locales. Several rays and starfish made an appearance in the shallower waters. In deeper areas, we visited the blue holes – these water-filled cave systems attract divers from all over the world. We did not get a chance to scuba dive, but diving is quite popular as the Andros Reef is one of the largest in the world and offers the purest Bahamian diving experience. According to island lore, these holes are home to the mythical sea monster known as Lusca. We were unable to test the veracity of this tale as Lusca chose not to greet us. Returning to the resort via boat, we had the privilege to be the very first guests to step onto the resort’s newly renovated dock. The dock is just one of many projects highlighted in HGTV’s Island Renovation. This hit show documents the owners of Caerula Mar and renovation professionals Bryan and Sarah Baeumler’s purchase and restoration of this once-abandoned property. Spoiler alert … the end result is pretty extraordinary, and you might even catch a glimpse of our family as the show was filming during our visit. So, put down the remote control and seize an opportunity to relax, refresh, and renew on one of the Caribbean’s most beautiful, untouched, and bio-diverse destinations. It’s about you. 3

things you should know this month in 60010

Partner with an expert! Buyers, working with an agent who gets creative is key, especially in an uber-competitive market like this one. Simply standing by and waiting for a home to hit the MLS puts you on your heels. You need an agent who moves fast, isn’t afraid to be proactive, takes risks and thinks outside of the box. This includes door knocking at off-market homes and working cooperatively with other agents to get the scoop on properties that are about to become available.

Now is the time! Interested in selling? Every day that you push off putting your 425 Westwood Drive- Highest sales price house on the market, you ever recorded in Barrington’s Westwood Neighborhood* could be costing yourself money. Interest rates are still rising (decreasing buyers’ purchasing power) and there are no indications of stabilization any time soon. Summer is now upon us, and many buyers want to be settled by the beginning of the school year. It’s not too late to make a game plan and capitalize on this sellers’ market. I can help!

Details matter … even in a hot market! We all know that staging a home increases value but, before that, you also have to get organized and clear out the clutter. That’s why I’ve teamed up with an amazing local business owner and Barrington mom, Ashley Rapp of Hello Staging + Organizing, and cover the costs of her hands-on home staging/organizing services for all my clients. Whether it’s donating a haul to House of Hope or helping you make some extra cash such as selling items on Facebook Marketplace Ashley can help make the transition to your new home much less painless and way more efficient and purposeful.

Host the Perfect Summer Bash Katie Wozniak, with Katherine Elizabeth Designs, on Summer Entertaining WORDS BY ROCHELLE NEWMAN RUBINOFF ILLUSTRATION BY ROBERT RISKO

S

ummer is finally upon us. And with it comes the much-anticipated outdoor dining and entertaining season. Interior designer Katie Wozniak, owner of Katherine Elizabeth Designs and brick and mortar store in downtown Barrington—Katherine Elizabeth at Home, is ready with some fun and accessible ideas to make your home entertaining events more memorable than ever. RAISE THE BAR (CART) One of Wozniak’s favorite trends, “bar carts are available in all different finishes and styles and are a great tool, whether you’re having a party indoors or outdoors,” she says. “Station the bar cart and spend time ensuring it has a beautiful set up. Many times, I’ll use it as a serving station for drinks. I love to put iced sun tea on it, alongside little appetizers or sandwiches.” Wozniak says she frequently includes a bouquet of fresh flowers, or a potted orchid, along with an accent candle. LET THERE BE LIGHT “Light is a wonderful way to add ambiance,” Wozniak says. “String lights have been popular for years and I still love them. There are also new gorgeous outdoor lamps available to add both lighting for reading and entertaining. We also love adding various sizes of lanterns and having the battery-operated lights that can be on timers or used with a remote.” SIT ON IT Wozniak recommends setting up a variety of areas for seating and conversation. “Sometimes I’ll set up a little seating enclave where people can lounge. And then I’ll set up a separate spot for dining.” In addition to fresh flowers, she also recommends plants with New Growth Enduraleaf plants, so you never have to worry about maintenance. Wozniak always tries to incorporate natural materials and layers of design into her décor elements and serving

pieces, including crystals, stone, wicker, and rattan—adding texture and feelings of comfort and coziness. Oh—and don’t forget the blankets. FABULOUS OUTDOOR FABRICS “This season’s choices are better than ever,” says Wozniak. Some are so beautiful, “you can’t tell the difference between an outdoor and indoor fabric. Same with the trim—there are beautiful trims for the pillows, with interesting patterns and colors. I’m seeing a lot of color come in for summer entertaining throughout homes as well—a real resurgence of layering color and adding textures.” YOUR TURN Wozniak loves the over-sized yard games that have become popular and enjoys setting them up at her gatherings. Some of her favorites are Jenga, Four Square and of course, the ever popular, Corn Hole. BOTTOMS UP Outdoor rugs have never looked better. With more patterns and styles available than ever before, outdoor rugs are beautiful enough to work indoor as well. CALL THE CATERER Woznizak and her team can’t stress this point enough. Give yourself a break and permission to get out of the kitchen and enjoy your own party. There is no shame in ordering food as simple as trays from your local gourmet grocery store to a full-on affair staged by your favorite purveyor of nibbles and craft cocktails. In addition to the many other benefits, this will leave you with a clean kitchen and easy mind. Katherine Elizabeth Designs and Katherine Elizabeth at Home is located at 800 S. Northwest Hwy Suite 100, Barrington, IL 60010 or call 847-381-9892.
