Any bull that has been shown to lose fertility during the first year may be returned to seller at buyer’s expense after notifying seller in writing. The bull must be in healthy condition and accompanied by proper health certificate. Seller will be liable only to the extent of the purchase price in any settlement or adjustment made on the bull that proves to be a non-breeder. Bull will most likely be replaced with one of equal value. Limitations to genetic defects, not injuries. Injuries are to be backed by an insurance policy on the bull purchased by the buyer.
Welcome again to our Annual Bull Sale.We are celebrating 63 years in the seedstock business! We feel we have a really good set of bulls, that have been fed right and are ready to go to work for you.
Investing in performance driven cattle is going to pay big dividends over the next few years with the record low cow numbers and strong consumer demand. The old adage pounds pay, is so true but often overlooked.Take advantage of heterosis and the extra pounds that good performance cattle will deliver – you will be rewarded.
Genomic testing has been done on all the bulls, as has scanning for carcass traits which will be on a supplement sheet sale day. All the bulls will have videos. The videos will be up well in advance of the sale on DV Auction and there will be live bidding available sale day. For those who wish to be on the phone or leave bids with someone, contact us in advance so we can handle it in the most efficient manner.
Feel free to call us with any questions or if you want to view the bulls at the farm before they got to Dunlap on the 20th. As usual there will be complimentary lunch served in the Bull Pen Diner, so come early and view the bulls and have lunch on us.
Thanks for your interest,
The bulls have been developed on the same ration as past years – a high roughage ration, that is stepped up slowly over the course of the 128 day feed test that also included a 30 day warmup period. The ration is designed to insure that the bulls are not fat but give you the commercial cattleperson, an idea of how their offspring will perform. The ration consists of grass/legume mixed hay, silage and grain mix. We would like to thank Brent Young with Northern Country CO-OP, for his nutrition guidance.
The EPDs in the catalog are the newest at time of print, February 2025. All additional and updated information will be printed and available to all prospective buyers upon arrival.
Charolais NonParent breed averages: Red Angus NonParent breed averages:
“When choosing bulls, I look for rate of gain, ribeye size 15 or better, scrotal size over 37, and good marbling. Wakefield bulls have the qualities I’m looking for. We’ve bought their bulls for over 20 years.”

TSI:
Terminal Sire Index (TSI) — The AICA
Terminal Sire Index is a formal method of combing Expected Progeny Differences (EPD) – BWT, WWT, YWT, REA, HCW, MARB and FAT – into one single value on which to base selection decisions. The TSI uses estimates of the genetic relationships between traits with an economic default value based on three year rolling USDA data.
P ros:
Profitability and Sustainability is an all-purpose index that predicts average economic differences in all segments in the beef supply chain. This index is a combination of the breeding objectives modeled in the HerdBuilder and GridMaster selection indexes. In this index, replacement heifers are retained from within the herd and all remaining progeny are fed out to slaughter and sold on a quality-based grid. Traits included in this index include calving ease, growth, HPG, STAY, Mature Weight, Dry Matter Intake and carcass traits. The resulting index is expressed in dollars per head born (Index/High Value).
HB:
HerdBuilder is a maternal selection index that predicts the economic differences of animals for traits that are important from conception through weaning. Expressed as dollars per head born, HB is calculated based on the scenario that bulls are mated to heifers and cows, replacement heifers are retained and all remaining progeny are marketed at weaning. Traits included in the HB index include CED, CEM, WW, Milk, Mature Weight, HPG and STAY (Index/High Value).
GM:
GridMaster is a selection index that predicts the average economic difference of non-replacement calves through the postweaning phase of production. GM places selection pressure on growth, feedyard performance and carcass traits. Expressed as dollars per head born, GM is calculated based on the scenario that progeny are fed out to slaughter and marketed on a quality-based carcass grid. Traits included in GM include ADG, CW, DMI, Marb, Fat and REA (Index/High Value).
MARCH 2, 1943 — SEPTEMBER 6, 2024
Joyce Eileen Wakefield, 81, of Hartland, MN passed away on September 6, 2024, after a brave battle against an infection. She was born in Mankato in 1943 to loving parents Benedict and Margaret Eustice. She was raised on the family farm near Janesville and grew up having all kinds of adventures with her 4 brothers and sisters. She often recalled idyllic stories of her childhood to her granddaughters like how she’d dress up her kittens and take them for rides in a wagon. A love for kittens is one of many things she passed on to her children and her grandchildren.
Joyce attended Janesville school until 8th grade and later graduated from Sacred Heart in Waseca in 1961. Prior to getting married, Joyce worked for several doctors in Minneapolis and Rochester. She was united in marriage to Larry Wakefield on January 20, 1968. She was then a dedicated stay-at-home mom to her 3 boys as they raised them on the Wakefield family cattle farm. She later balanced farm and family life with jobs at the New Richland Care Center and at E.F. Johnson/Itron of Waseca.
Joyce loved all things esthethic but in an intentional, cozy way that brought comfort to her family. She was always trying out new recipes and decorating for each new season and holiday. She had a knack for gardening and loved being amongst her flowers and vegetables. Her home was a warm and loving environment where she was frequently lending an ear to family and friends alike. She was gentle and patient and had a quiet but very deep faith.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband Larry, her sons Kyle (Emily), Travis (Laurie), and Dan, her granddaughters Lauren, Naomi and Abby, her sister Pat, sisters-in-law Monica Priebe (Charlie) and Ruth Eustice, brothers-in-law Lowell (Darlene) and John, extra special cousin friends Beth Knudson and Margaret Stewart, and many loving nieces and nephews on both sides of the family.
